The future has been shown in film to unfold in countless ways. Among the many on-screen scenarios is future society taking a turn for the worse. WatchMojo picks the ten most discouraging visions of the future in movies.
List Entries and Rank:
#10. “Metropolis” (1927)
#9. “Idiocracy” (2006)
#8. “Surrogates” (2009)
#7. “Minority Report” (2002)
#6. “Blade Runner” (1982)
#5. “The Hunger Games” (2012)
#4. “Gattaca” (1997)
#3. ? - Zábava
WHAT ABOUT 1984?!?!
+Iron2Man911
Maybe because it is too current for "Dystopian Movie Futures"
Logan's Run's not exactly current. Good movie though.
In the novels the age of termination is 21 not 30 and is planet wide and not just in the domed city . Short but good reads if you can find them .
Iron2Man911 it's a book, not a movie
Lol same
I think Wall-E deserves to be on this list.
It's one of the most "realistic" and has high probability of happening to the real world's humans.
Ghost in the shell is way more probable
where is 1984/brave new world/a clockwork orange
+Tyler Gardner yeah i love the 1984 with john hurt as the lead character! and clockwork orange is awesome!
+Tyler Gardner Right, how could they not put them in there?
+Tyler Gardner 1984 is not dystopian, it is today's reality. That's why it isn't on the list.
Amen!
also "children of men" or "brazil", but hey you cant trust in a top ten of dystopian movies where the "hunger games" rank higher than blade runner. are you f'n you kidding me?
I would've placed BLADE RUNNER much higher on the list.
I disagree . Blade runner is good but I don't think it deserves to be higher . It had to much slow periods .
+1945joshuaruiz ...also somewhat outdated now that I watch it again... maybe one spot higher.
Philippe Renaud yeah i agree one spot higher
+1945joshuaruiz Thank you...
is not about the quality of the movie guys, it's about how distopian the future is...
Seems this list could do with some honorable mentions ... 1984, A Clockwork Orange, A.I., Akira, Battle Royale, The Book of Eli, Brazil, Children of Men, Cloud Atlas, Dredd, Elysium, Equilibrium, The Fifth Element, The Handmaid's Tale, Mad Max, The Matrix, Repo Men, The Road, Robocop, The Running Man, Starship Troopers, Terminator, THX1138, Total Recall, 12 Monkeys, V for Vendetta, WALL-E
man... I gotta agree on those
The book The Running Man would definitely qualify. The movie, though, would not. They stripped out pretty much all of the social commentary. It's scary, though, how prescient the book seems to be...
The other ones on your list that I've seen, though, I agree, should at least be honorable mentions...
AND Planet of the Apes, I Am Legend/The Omega Man (same premise), Waterworld, Time Machine, The Postman...
Electricshrock Thanks for that, knew I missed a few ... :-)
Good list
I kind of miss Equilibrium, where you have to take drugs to feel nothing.
Ignoring 1984 is unforgivable. Plus, what about "Children of Men?" A world where children cannot be born seems a lot more scary that the futures predicted in "Logan's Run" and "Hunger Games," both of which were profoundly silly, despite their popularity.
True that
You clearly haven’t read The Hunger Games books if you think they’re silly.
also hunger games has actually happened. Just look at our history with gladiatorial matches to the death in arenas. Look at the class system of the world. The Hunger Games may use districts to portray the class system but look at the USA,UK,Europe and compare the the middle east, parts of asia and africa etc. Not so silly when its really happening.
Yeah 1984 could happen where as hunger games could not
How is Children of Men's premise any less silly than the other ones?
Why isn't 1984 here?
We are practically living it today.
***** Yeah really. ^^
1984, to a bit of an extent. I think today is a bit more of Huxley though.
I guess this is the kind of misapplication that Bob30737 is complaining about - see thread started by MinDisRighT.
it invented the genre it should be number 1
The book would be 1 (same with stuff like Brave New World) but this is for movies.
Idiocracy is so viable it is sort of scary sometimes.
Idiocracy is secretly a documentary of modern America. Don't tell anyone.
Both Gattaca and Minority Report are lesser films than the Mad Max/ Road Warrior Trilogy. I would leave either of those two films off the list and include MM/RW instead ... but I suppose Mel Gibson pissed off too many people with his drunken ramblings.
It has already happened. The ancients were intelligent, we are idiots in comparison.
yea ok hunger games is on here but not children of men
Right? That should be Battle Royale anyway. If you're going to choose that story.
I thought of children of men too
WTF why Blade Runner ranked lower than stupid Hunger Games?
+MrPsish Cuz teenagers.
I know, right?
You clearly haven't read the books
Blade Runner should be number 1
9robin3
Lol, you're being sarcastic right? Blade Runner is so much closer, look at our currently technology, we have self driving cars, which will fly soon, there is one being released in about 4 years. and the electronics/computer technology, those huge tv screens, go to any sports event or concert these days. The internet, our home pc's and AI. we have robots that look nearly human, soon they will look totally human. The hunger games on the other hand? that bs will never happen.
Blade Runner is a masterpiece and should be #1.
Music Lover exactly
Not even close.
It really deserves number 1
Yes definitely the rain the city an the fact its ridley scott
Blade Runner is THE greatest artistic achievement in cinematography ever ... remember this, they did not take the easy lazy way out by picking a nice location already there to shoot, everything every detail in Blade Runner's world is created from scratch by artists... watch the making of documentary, the amount of artistry put into creating the world is mind boggling ...
Seriously where the hell is V for Vendetta, Children of Men, Terminator, Matrix, WALL-E, Planet of the Apes...etc...........and YES i disagree with this list...seriously Hunger Games, Idiocracy..etc*facepalm*... I do agree with Metropolis the rest was shit !
There's no Akira as well
Some was good, but most was shit for some reason.
***** And Brazil
What about 1984?...
Agreed, The Hunger Games is itself a rip-off of Battle Royale, I don't care what anybody says. Idiocracy was also put here simply because of its premise, which is juvenile at best anyway, while the film itself is no more a masterpiece than "Scary Movie".
Either Planet of the Apes and 1984 should have been included in these spots.
Blade Runner should be 1.
Hell yeah.
CosmicNIO Definitely
Absolutely
Blade Runner should be number 1 next to 1984 Omega man and Brazil
I agree.
1984, brave new world, the matrix, clockwork orange, they live, wall-E... so many honorable mentions not mentioned.
I think this deserves another updated countdown!
1. A Clockwork Orange
2. Blade Runner
3. 1984
4. Brazil
5. THX1138
6. Metropolis
7. Robocop
8. Terminator
8. The Planet of the Apes
9. 12 Monkeys
10. Battle Royale
Honorable mentions: The Matrix, Logan's Run, The Andromeda Strain, Fahrenheit 451, Akira, Equilibrium & Children of Men (I might have forgotten a few)
Allan Thormod Sander Frederiksen what about Wall-E?
The matrix is utopia not dystopia, whats outside the matrix well that just sucks
well,, that's what I call (Dystopian Films) 👍
You can't take Gattaca off of the list. It's too relatable. Also too good of a movie.
Children of Men should be more than an honourable mention
I've missed two of the best dystopian movies ever...1984 and Brazil...
Children of men
cannot believe they missed 1984, Brave New World and Clockwork Orange....Unreal
I am very surprised no one had mentioned equilibrium. It was an awesome movie with pretty fitting elements of control of the masses by eliminating emotion.
Exactly it's a cult classic
Yeah, that's a good movie!
Resident Evil, Children of Men, Total Recall, Equilibrium, Judge Dredd, The Book of Eli, Waterworld....
Guy Forget Oh my God Waterworld, I have forgotten that movie. You're right ! What a nightmare it would be, I don't even want to think about it too much.
Guy Forget THX1138
Guy Forget Equilibrium was an amazing movie.
+MrSirwolf2001 the best! i have the dvd!
What about Equilibrium? The prozium suppresses all human emotion and the head of the state is Father.
I thought it will be in 1 but not.
I would say 1984 but im not sure that counts as "future dystopia" anymore. U heard me NSA.
It's still my favorite book of all time so it MUST be on here.... just go with my logic... Orwell is love, Orwell is life
***** It never gets old or less powerful. Recently re-read on audiobook as well as re-watched both the 50`s original and 84`s remake of novel-to-film adaptaions. "The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism".....mmmm
God your ***** stupid.
Rainbows end.
I can’t believe this post wasn’t removed because of hate speech ;)
@@BigHosMan dystopian a.k.a evil high-tech nanotech futuristic sci-fi luxury automation consumerism
Where are A Clockwork Orange, 1984 and The Running Man?
A Clockwork Orange is not dystopian enough to me. A teen got in some problem, caught by the police and revisioned for the society. It feels like the world have it's moral value fucked up by wars or some sort and the government tries to restore the order with another violence
Raven Knight Vincent you obviously didn't read the book or watch the movie
Franco Ortiz-Gallo The country is not opressed. There won't be crazy chaos if so.
The Road is the scariest. It's also the most likely human reaction to mass starvation and a fallen government. It took me a long time to watch the movie after reading the book. No one writes like Cormac McCarthy. It reminded me of Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" the way a horrific story is so beautifully written. Read the book or anything by C.M.
best book, best movie
I love the book (and the movie) too; however, I wouldn't classify it as dystopian, because in some sense, there has to be a control factor such as bureaucracy, technology, religion, etc. which creates some sort of oppressive system. In The Road, there are no rules any more. No one is happy, no one has security. So there's no organizing principle that keeps power in one group's hands, or at least OUT of the hands of the masses. I'd argue that's crucial to a dystopian story.
@@jeffbaer5851 That's a very interesting perspective. I disagree with your definition of dystopian. It needs no organizing factor in my opinion. It only need that the society as imagined in the story force the majority of people to feel frightened and dehumanized. If an organizing factor was needed, however, I would argue that this story took place in the early stages as there are already small tyrannical groups that will ultimately consolidate power and fall under a unifying rule as is inevitable. Thanks. Hope you continue to enjoy CM's works. He's the best modern novelist in my opinion. Have a good one.
the road is post apocalyptic, not dystopian
@@LockOn7016 Post apocalyptic is a sub genre of dystopian fiction. Have a great one!
1950: We will have flying cars in future.
2019 : TikTok era bigins.
*A DARK ERA BEGINS*
Some dystopias that definitely should be on this list
- *1984*
- *V for Vendetta*
- *Equilibrium*
Four numbers 1984 all these movies are based off this book read it George Orwell wrote it in 1949. This should have been the top spot
WatchMojo.com
Read the book man. its not a movie. The book was made into a movie. Calm down. 1984 is a book by George Orwell Made In 1949. 9snaker
Darryl Williams There are books written about dystopian societies BEFORE the boook '1984'. It is a great book but it's not an original topic.
Flo Guillory All I'm saying is give credit where credit is due I think it should be #1. People still relate to his book to todays times he was far ahead if his time and anyone of the directors these movies or author of any of these books has taken a page from George Orwell's book. At least an honorable mention dang
Fuck of with 1984 already.
Yes it's a good movie/book, but it's message is irrelevant to us.
It's not relevant any more, that book is the product of the red scare, it's outdated.
Soylent green, Aldous Huxley those things have a lot more in common with us than 1984.
Minority report, soylent green, a brave new world, these stories carry messages that are far more relevant to us than 1984.
Hell, Vernor Vinges Rainbows end is pretty much the world 10yrs from now.
V for Vendetta? I for one think it's awesome how John Hurt went from being Winston Smith in "1984" to big brother himself in V
I just finished a film from 1985 called Brazil. It takes it's inspiration from 1984 based on the government receiving information about everything. It's unique because paperwork is the main focus to control every action that's conducted, whether it be leaving the country or a documentation of arrest. Plus, everyday is Christmas
WHAT HAPPENED TO 1984 & BRAVE NEW WORLD?
She said dystopian future, not actual reality. lol
Pepe Cabrera why there are the best
Walk On The Darxide we are living in a dystopia most people don't realise it yet
Pepe Cabrera Also, what about Maze Runner?
Milk Man I'd rather that than this world. hell I'd rather live in Blade Runner
You should have included the 1974 cult classic A Boy and His Dog which starred a then unknown Don Johnson. You should also have included the all time greatest dystopian picture A Clockwork Orange.
"In Time" it's a good movie! It tells the story of a world where everything is paid with time instead of money.
Terry Gilliam's Brazil.
Brazil was WILD.
Brazil is one of the best films of the 20th century.
Deep Ashtray I agree. And Dark City...
Metropolis is still very fun to watch, as it isn't slow paced as other movies from that time. I highly recommend it, a real masterpiece, not only for that time!
Dont even fucking put that fucking young adult fiction Hunger Games in this list. I know its recent, but....FUCK NO
Ganstas With Waifus Battle Royal ripp off! ;)
WHAT?!?! Terry Gilliam's "Brazil" should be #1. Logan's run is a cheese fest that stoned people watch to laugh at. "Brazil" is for sober thinking people - and it scares the shit out of them. BAD LIST. (not all of it - but the omission of this film is a MASSIVE oversight).
Yes I would agree Brazil is more closer to the actual trend of society and schould be at the top of any dystopic list but I think America will be worse in the future than what Brazil the movie depicts
Hunger games? Really? Why not Running Man instead of that pathetic excuse for a teen flick?
I don't know why they didn't do the running man, but the Hunger games is far from twilight level of bad. And is well above most teen flicks.
ajmrowland I had to watch it to know it, but I must have really failed miserably, because I did not manage to find appeal in that movie.
The Hunger Games copied The Running Man, which copied Death Race 2000, which copied The Most Dangerous Game.
Svitojus the book (as you probably hear with many things) was much better than the movies
stevesb97 I am talking about the world itself, not just the concept of "human hunt", but I agree - it is a copy of a copy.
And since January 6, 2021, we are living it.
“Wait, did we say far off future? We meant 2019.” Oh shoot.....
Replying from 2020. You haven't sen anything yet.
@@chevellecraven2140 this is 2021, its worse
No V for Vedetta or Equilibrium?
No "Battle Royale?" No "A Clockwork Orange?"
Did you know Blade Runner and Alien take place in the same universe, Ridley Scott literally confirmed it himself.
“They didn’t change the recipe like they said they would! - Soylent Purple is still people - ITS STILL PEOPUUUUULLLLL”
Equilibrium is a pretty scary but unique idea
Equilibrium isn't exactly original; think Fahrenheit 451, mixed with Nineteen-Eighty-Four, mixed with Brave New World:
A society is told what to think by one, faceless voice (Orwell); forms of art, such as paintings, books, and poems are burned to suppress emotions (Bradbury); and the population is controlled by a drug, which everyone takes (Huxley).
It's an interesting combination, and certainly scary, but unfortunately it isn't original. The originality isn't the problem with the movie, though.
Where is 1984 equilibrium in time children of men dredd v for vendetta the running man in time and also robocop if that is a dystopian
Road Warrior
Yes. And The Matrix.
Where is your punctuation??
I've said it before and I'll say it again. WatchMojo, do another list.
Dystopia is a world without commas, like the one you live in.
I want a part 2 to this list So many good films have come out since!
I think Logan's Run (which happens to be one of my favorite old scifi movies) may be one of the most idealistic (and possibly even realistic) future for our species. The only real issue they had was the unneeded, dramatized population control where they kill everyone aged 30. People always die eventually, so as long as you can manage birth rates (which ironically they do in this scenario), the population, quality of life, availability of resources etc. can be maintained at an ideal level virtually forever.
Read the book the movie is based on. It gives more detail into the why it came about.
Stopped watching when Blade Runner was beat out by The Hunger Games. This list's credibility was utterly shot at that point.
Where the hell is 1984?
The movies weren't that good. Neither of them.
Rodney Dongerfield that’s not true. The newer one is actually VERY good
how is blade runner only number 6???
yo momz said i guess they never saw the movie
Also V for Vendetta.
1984 should be on this list. The film, not the year
In particular since that one is about to become fact instead of fiction with NSA, GCHQ and FRA running rampant.
SbJuthberg
"About to"?
We're already so far past that. We willingly carry Big Brother around in our pockets, no questions asked!
You can't have 1984 on this list because the list is for Dystopian Future!
We are already living in 1984 with the CCTV and surveillance 24/7!
it's not the future, its the present!
On the other hand "Idiocracy" is the future we are heading for with celebrity and idol culture, where voting for celebrity in reality show is more important than selecting the next leader!
Ashrak Ahmed it was a dystopia when it was created you fucking cretin
It isn't just a movie anymore. IM TALKING TO YOU NSA!
Metropolis and Bladerunner both WAY too far down. How is Bladerunner worse than Hunger Games?! Plus where is the movie Brazil?
***** Did you watch the entire clip. Do it again and tell me what they ask at the end.
Totally agree. Both Metropolis and Bladerunner were landmark films for their times (one could include Soylent Green there also). Both created visions and sci-fi tropes others filmmakers would copy while being great films in themselves.
No Brazi and Mad Max??? I'm dead.
Also, Blade Runner should be #1 but I'm a huge fan of Soylent Green and Logan's Run too
Omg what about mad max? Waterworld? Total Recall? Clockwork Orange? 1984? Terminator? They'd be in the top 10 for sure...
I agree with 1984, but some of them (like Terminator) are more on the post-apocalyptic side.
***** While you are correct, a dystopia does not always have to be based on bad/oppressive government(s).
Terminator
Terminator 2 shows a pretty hellish future, every glimpse you get seems to suck royally. Mad Max 2 is where the real dystopian vision lies, also while Earth isn't really touched on my instincts say the future as depicted in Alien would have to suck as well. My personal opinion is the worst of them all is the one depicted in Children of Men. Human society and humanity itself is irreparable decay and there is no real way to save us; we've done ourselves in. The ending gives some hope but really even if the human project succeeds, the old world will have to die off anyway and that's depressing as hell.
Right on with 1984. But Mad Max, Waterworld, and Terminator are all post-apocalyptic, not dystopian.
As far as plots that haven't been covered, Uglies was one of my favorite childhood Dystopian books. It's not even far fetched either…I loved Gattaca's ideas, but there were aspects of it I think they were too shy with. Things I would have loved to have seen done with it, but the writers were too timid to really lay down some hard-hitting aspects of the problems with a society like that. That and they really should have had more resolution with his brother along with a better murderer. I had myself convinced it was some crazy conspiracy by the janitor, but it didn't happen. In fact, they took the easiest way out.
Some other ones: Demolition Man, 1984, THX 1138, A.I., The Sixth Day, Escape from NY/LA, Judge Dredd, Pleasantville (dystopian spoof of 1950s TV shows), Westworld, Running Man, and Total Recall. Some dystopias are more appealing than others. I guess it depends on one's tastes and how much regimentation they want in their lives.
The Handmaid's Tale is a good one, and yeah, how could they miss the Matrix?
That "in time" justin timberlake movie should've been an honorable mention
Soylent Green and Logan's Run are really good movies, but yeah, who forgets George Orwell's 1984? It definitely deserves a spot on this list.
"In Time" and "Equilibrium" both have pretty cool dystopian futures too
1982: there will be flying cars in 2019
2019: still no flying cars
A boy and his dog, Matrix, Brazil, Akira, 1984, Equilibrium, La Jeteé, 12 Monkeys, The 5th element, Dark city, the 13 floor, or even Wall - e, I am lengen, I robot, one of them should be here instead of Hunger games. It´s about movies, cause I haven´t read the book but it must be betther than the movie.
Where was 1984? Is it because it's titled as such?
Nea So Copros from Cloud Atlas is a frighteningly believable future. It doesn't come across as much in the film but in the book it's very clear. A corpocracy stuck in an endless cycle of consumption where the end is so close but no one can stop it coming!
Now that it's 2014, Elysium should be on the list.
Yeah, every few years or so the should update the list.
I agree. The futre only repeats itself.
The past even
***** Can you name them? I'd like to see them. As with a lot of contemporary films I liked the concept and CGI of Elysium but could see right thru the plot holes.
Soylent Green, a movie where an overpopulated world resorts to a high tech form of cannibalism to sustain itself, scared the hell out of me the first time I saw it. And here we are worrying ourselves like crazy because there are fewer babies being born even though there are over 8 billion of us living together on a single planet that can barely support half that number.
Whoa, I should check out Soylent Green. That's a messed up storyline, lol.
same here...
The viewer is not supposed to know that Soylent Green is people until the end of the movie.
Where is The Fifth Element? This list sucked
The list is fine, it is Fifth Element that sucks.
Bane?
The list is not fine
I love Blade Runner! My favorite!
+Guille Fett (Bounty Hunter) me too my fave also!
To me
Many other movies would deserve a place here, among them, 1984. I think "Gattaca" and "Farenheit 451" are the closest ones to reality.
I think The Hunger Games should've been first, just because it doesn't really contain any massively high-tech equipment so it is more realistic and it has a look on what the fashion of the future may look like which, for me personally, is very interesting. also, even though it's unlikely, everything that happens throughout The Hunger Games trilogy is perfectly possible and could happen
Logans Run so good, they can't remake it - the first one hit great emotional notes
Funny how they did remake it though. It's called The Island. Forget what year it came out but it wasn't too long ago.
FILMS: Silent Running, The Quiet Earth, Immortal Ad Vitam, Natural City, The 6th Day, Bunker Palace Hotel, Kin Dza-Dza, Liquid Sky, Teknolust, The Last Starfighter, Noi the Albino,
ANIME: Aeon flux, Angel's Egg, Wizards, Gilgamesh, Texnolyze, Ergo Proxy, Wicked City, Ghost in the Shell, Summer Wars, Serial Experiments Lain, Fantastic Planet
are some of my personal favourites that are missed, admittedly some are more cyberpunk than dystopain. but have the same feel to them.
Hi mrs leiva, congrats for the 100 in the examam Tanks
"Logan's Run" is one of my all-time favorite movies, but I was really surprised to see it as #1 on this list.
Fun fact: "Logan's Run" was written as an extrapolation of '60s counterculture- ie, "don't trust anyone under 30", "bring down the Establishment". (Which was that decade's version of "OK boomer" or "subvert the dominant paradigm".)
Mega city 1???? Where is that at???
The mere fact that Blade Runner was outranked by the Hunger Games truly upsets me. Though I do enjoy The Hunger Games, Blade Runner was a much more interesting, in depth, philosophical, political, satirical, unique and important work of art then The Hunger Games. At least in my opinion.
Glad to see Fahrenheit 451 in your list
I love Metropolis and I am glad to see it on this list I just would have given it a higher spot. So many modern Sci-Fi movies own at least some ideas to this masterpiece.
That Soylent Green literally shocked me 😱
It"s coming soon, dear,NOT in a theater near you :)))
It's in the Green New Deal
WTF??? No brazil or children of men?
Tyrell Wellick ikr !!!!!
COM is a good 1. Totally forgot about that 1.
children of men isn't that great
Shafiq
Yes it is
@@Space_Wanderer__ it's the best movie i've ever watched
hunger games above blade runner no battle royale no akira no ghost in the shell. this should just be called top 10 recent american mainstream dystopian future movies.
Saw he movie "Her" two weeks ago and i gotta say that is probably the most realistic future we will have someday
but it is definitely not dystopian enough
this video was uploaded on my birthday! :D
I was gonna say where is divergent, and then i realize this was posted in 2012!!? um WAT! we need an updated list please lol
Where's Children of Men?
what about "Brazil" (the film)
Respect to you sir - nuff said
Idiocracy quite hits us in 2017.
A Clockwork Orange
THX 1138
1984? or to me the film that is looking the most like the present day and the near future is Terry Gilliam's Brazil.
Couldn't care less about Minority Report's story or 'Dystopian' setting.
I just wanted that computer interface.
We watched this in class in preparation for reading The Giver
I'm shocked the Terminator movies aren't on this list.
missed 1984 and THX 1138
NO EQUILIBRIUM i mean come on illegal to have emotions and anythings from music, literature, art and anything which could bring on emotion is destroyed and anyone that has such items are executed
Equilibrium takes most of it's themes from fahrenheit 451, love the movie as a pop corn flick but if your going to choose based on the dystopian aspect than the original wins out.
Metropolis, Hunger Games, Gattaca, Logan's Run, Farenheit 451, Soylent Green and Mad Max Beyond the thunder dome all seem very possible, briefly anyway.
I personally hope they do another list on this topic....Because I wanna see the Justin Timberlake film "In Time" on the next list....
i need to watch gattaca again
