What was it like working with Christopher Reeve in Superman III #insideofyou #superman - ZĂĄbava
Christopher Reeve is the only one who has legit managed to make Clark Kent and Superman look like two different people, phenomenal actor.
All the other Superman actors didn't even try.
The scene where he is waiting for lois and without saying a word removes his glasses , adjusts his posture and he becomes superman wearing clarks clothes. Then Lois comes out, he shrinks back into clark and they go on there date.... Convincingly shows both identities without saying a word, HE was far and away better than every succesor.
Looking at and listening to Reeve's Clark and Supes, if you didn't already know, you'd never suspect they were the same man.
@@brennan4159 Yep, incredible.

Christopher Reeve will always be Superman to me.
He made us believe that man could fly, the GOAT.

Annetteâs story about the first time seeing Christopher Reeve in costume as Superman and her enthusiasm as a Superman fan is so cute.đ
See knows about Supes appeared in 1930s,his powers etc She's rare!
"hello Annette" .....wow.. đź
I have always been Team Lana. I've always thought she's the type of girl someone like Superman or Clark would fall for and not someone like Lois. This was actually the only thing I loved about Superman 3, reteaming him with Lana. And i think Annette O'Toole was the perfect actress to portray her.
Proof that Christopher Reeve was really Superman
Still naturally beautiful at 70.
Loved hearing about how kind chris was.
Such a soothing voice.....great for audio books!
I've always loved Annette O'Toole's voice..
Yes ! Her kindness as a human shines through! Almost makes me teary
I shed a tear when Christopher reeve made a guest appearance on smallville the real superman advising his successor absolutely brilliant the GOAT.
????
Christopher Reeve played a role in Smallville helping Clark find out who he is. Tom Welling even said that Christopher Reeve wanted Tom to actually be Superman

I spent the day with Margot Kidder at comic con years ago after her signing we went to lunch then dinner with several of my friends. We talked maybe 5 hours to 6 hours. She told us that she was doing a lot of coke back then and was not very nice. She said she didnât remember days or weeks at a time or just bits and pieces. She was taking downers to even out. So honest and lots of regrets. She said all her self worth and confidence was tied to her looks and once they were gone she took a long time to know who she was and a longer time to love herself. She was staying with a friend in San Diego so just got on the bus to come to comic con. Yes we drove her home.
I met her at San Antonio comic con in 2016. Too bad she killed herself.
Love your story!
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for sharing.
I saw Miss Kidder at WonderCon 2015.
She was very gracious to all her fans and was answered all the questions people had about working on Superman.
I have some nice video clips of her in my photo album.
That's an awesome story to share, thanks for doing so!
I tear up when I think about Christopher Reeve. He made me believe a man could fly. I was 10 years old when Superman premiered. That movie was a huge event in my life. It was bigger than life. I trembled during the credit roll in the beginning. But the first time you see him fly in the movie.............chills..........for me, one of the great moments in my life. It was great being a kid.
Same here, seeing Superman on the big screen was an amazing experience. I was 13 and saw it three times between Xmas and New Year's and it was sold out every time. The third time I brought a little audio recorder and taped most of the movie. Wish I had kept it bc the audience reactions were unbelievable, especially during the helicopter rescue.
@@chiefscheider Would love to hear it.

Margot Kidder was punished by the producers the Salkinds for siding with Richard Donner, the original director of 'Superman', who was working to complete 'Superman II' before he was unceremoniously fired by the producers & replaced with Lester. That is the sole reason why the Lois Lane character was essentially side-lined for Lana Lang. Gene Hackman also sided with Donner & refused to appear in 'Superman III', which is why Robert Vaughn was the main antagonist instead, in the same way that Marlon Brando was replaced with Susannah York for the Krypton flashback scenes in 'Superman II', as Brando sided with Donner as well & refused to appear in the sequel. Lester re-shot about 75% of the scenes filmed for 'Superman II' & brought a camp comedy element into the mix that didn't really suit the series. Richard Pryor was an ill-fit for 'Superman III' & unfortunately his presence determined the film's tone. But it does feature the Superman Vs. Superman battle which might be Christopher Reeve's greatest moment in the role. And the horrific cyborg transformation of Annie Ross in the climax was hands down the scariest moment in any Superman movie! It's still better than 'Superman IV' & 'Superman Returns'. Was a nice homage when they brought Annette O'Toole into the 'Smallville' TV series as Martha Kent, and more recently Helen Slater in the 'Supergirl' series as Eliza Danvers.
Thankyou for sharing that's really interesting. I am 44 now and when i was a kid in the 80's Superman was my hero.
To be fair to Richard Lester, the Salkinds were the ones that wanted the camp comedy. The Salkinds wanted Superman to be a campy movie series similar to the Adam West Batman show. Richard Donner envisioned a grand epic fantasy tale similar to Greek stories and having a grand Heroes Journey.
Reeves always liked working with both Lester and Donner. I always got the impression that Lester was merely just doing a job by the Salkinds and often got unfair blame for the short comings.
... Annette says that when she was reading for the Martha Kent role that the casting agents didn't realize that she had played Lana Lang in Superman 3. Smallville wound up with 2 Lois Lane's, 2 Lana Lang's and 2 Clark Kent's.
And any of Reeve's Superman movies are better than any other superhero film except maybe for the first Hulk TV movie
It's such a shame Donner did not continue. His take was exactly right at the right time. Superman is a metaphor for America, and after the dark cynical period of the late 60s/early 70s, it was films like Rocky, Star Wars, Grease, and Superman: The Movie that celebrated American traditions, wholesomeness, virtue and individual heroism. IMO, that trend peaked in the mid-80s with Top Gun, before slowly devolving into woke cynicism again.
You never forget when someone makes you feel. Like most kids from the late 70s/80s, Christopher Reeve will always be my Superman.
"Somewhere In Time" One of the most glorious movies I've ever seen. Christopher Reeve was almost angelic, and Jane Seymour was so incredibly stunningly beautiful. The music, the scenery, everything about the movie was perfection, and the ending..Good lord! Knowing how Chris lived the last years of his life, and his passing, makes the movie even more achingly beautiful.
Chris actually said in an interview, after his injury that he had an out of body experience, just like the one at the end of Somewhere in Time.
One of my favorites as well. I don't think I've ever watched it without crying. Love it.
There are romance/love story movies and then there is Somewhere in Time. It is so incredibly good. There is no way one won't have a broken heart for the main characters by the end of it.
Yes, it was an impactful movie, but I found it a bit disturbing. The ending felt like a deus ex machina ending -- a trite way of reversing the sheer tragedy of the story. (BTW, the woman Elise was based upon was actually a lesbian, lol.) More interesting is that the movie uses Rachmaninoff's music very effectively, and one of the women in the movie was Teresa Wright of the classic movie Best Years of Our Lives.
I recently watched Somewhere In Time after hearing folks' rave reviews and I get it. I don't watch romance but that movie was well done and had me captivated the moment the old woman said 'Come back to me'. Very interesting. I wonder if the book if just as good.
Watching Annette was like watching the TV Mom I always wanted.
Yeah exactly, she reminds me so much of Anne Lockhart, another hottie from the 80s that I loved.
She's a beautiful lady, Thanks for putting her on your show đđđđ
Hearing that Annette was a Superman nerd growing up makes too much sense! How cool that she got to do a movie and a tv show of Superman. How lucky!
Very few nerds can pull it off like Annette did. Directors and producers usually donât like those types. They feel they are too attached, lack of depth and skill. Annette proved that itâs important to have that kind of attachment with education to give it that burst.
This was such an amazing interview. While there are many who have and will don the cape. Christopher Reeve was and IS Superman. He made us all believe a man could fly while standing for truth, justice, and the American way.
Annette O'Toole & her husband Michael McKean have always reminded me of that cool aunt & uncle that you would want to hang out with during summer break. Always liked their dynamic both on/off screen.
Lenny and Lana đ
I remember being so truly impressed with Smallville's casting, especially with John and Martha Kent. What a wonderful nod to the films it was to bring Annette back to play Martha. And she was perfect for the role. She surpassed the nostalgia vote immediately by bringing warmth and depth to the character. Could not have asked for better than she gave us. How sweet to see that she has just as much grace off screen.
John Schneider was an awesome Pa Kent.
And Zod as Jor-El. Great stuff.
Everyone was perfectly casted, especially Clark, Lex and Chloe. And Lionel. Love their facial expressions. It's time to watch from the beginning again.
Yup, the original Lana Lang back in a modern (early 2000's) retelling as Martha Kent was so fitting & genuine. I grew up watching John Schneider in Dukes of Hazzard, & he came along nicely. Guess it was his destiny to play Good Ol Boys.
Totally agree. Annette and John Schneider was a masterstroke of casting for Martha and Jonathan.
Superman III is massively underrated. It has issues with tone, but ALL the Smallville scenes are pure gold, and Chris and Annette had way more chemistry than with Margot. Evil Superman was just amazing too!
Superman 3 killed the franchise. Firing Donner was the biggest mistake the Salkinds ever made. Chris and Margot were incredible together.
@@richardgarcia618 they didnât fire Richard he quit over creative differences with Superman 2 cause originally they were shooting Superman the movie and Superman 2 at the exact same time but they were running out of money so they choose to finish Superman the movie and finish Superman 2 later itâs why the unnecessary general zod scene shows up in Superman the movie and is reshown in Superman 2 where it actually makes sense to be there tenches between Richard and the Salkinds is what cause him to quit
"Evil Superman" and the junkyard scene is a sheer stroke of genius that was sorely misunderstood by audiences at the time. It was too clever for its own good. The scene was a fight "within" Superman; within his psyche. It's all very Jungian.
While the synthetic kryptonite didn't kill Superman it did make him "sick"; it lowered his inhibitions and revealed the suppressed side of Kal-El's personality. Notice that it was Kent, all meek, clean-cut and raised on the farm, that came out to confront the "evil Superman". Two projections of Superman's psyche.
This movie was filmed in the midst of a "just say no to drugs" backdrop as well. You could also argue that the junkyard fight was an addicted Superman that was trying to get clean. The clean Clark won.
A movie well ahead of its time. It's one of my favourite Superman movies.
Everything that did not involve Richard Pryor or Robert Vaughn.
The parts you mention are it's best elements, but overall Superman 3 is a Richard Pryor movie and Superman is a supporting character. It is so apart from the tone and seriousness of Donners movies that it is sad. IV is total trash. You cannot make a good cheap Superman movie.
That was a touching and beautiful reminiscence from her.
I mean to be treated so kindly by Reeve, Kidder and Pryor AND seeing Chris as a flesh and blood Superman? Wow.
*Reeve
@@jamesanderson6373 Yeah. Iâve fixed the spelling. Friggin iPhone autocorrect. I put in Reeve and itâs in quotes with Reece on the right. Once I type the comma, it autocorrected to Reece. Right when I typed up my reply to you the dang phone did it to me again.
She's so positive and a nice lady!
Makes sense that Rosey wasn't a Superman fan as kid, preparing to play Lex Luthor even back then. đ
I'm trying to imagine how Christopher Reeve probably reacted being out in public and kids just swarming around him saying "Superman". Most celebrities would have bodyguards trying to get them away from that but I have a feeling Christopher Reeve would kneel down and take pictures with them.
Actors who played Doctor Who have said itâs like taking on responsibility for a whole generation to BECOME the Doctor, and thatâs the best analogy I have ever heard to taking on these iconic roles.
Sounds like Chris Evans as Captain America now.
Christopher Reeve will always be my Superman!
Great respect for Annette O'Toole. đđ„°
Aw, I could listen to Annette talk about Christopher Reeve all day. How wonderful. I think I started to hear the John Williams music when she described seeing him in costume the first time.
Reeve in costume radiated strength and nobility, but also compassion. You saw him, you automatically felt everything's going to be okay, because Superman is here.
@@danieldickson8591 Cavill, while handsome and a good Actor, is pure nightmare fuel to me in the role. Never once feel that special paternal safety that Reeve just effortlessly imbued.
Reeve would descend and gently part clouds bringing soothing Sunshine ~ While Cavill swooped in with aggressively bleak brewing thunderstorms scooped up under his cape.
Just nothing but foreboding, impeding doom and chaos. Nothing Super to be seen.
I weep(as a Fan) for the Kids who never got to bathe in Christopher's magnetic light during their formative years. All the young Cavill fans I've met have a tinge of aggression to their Fandoms. The Reeve camp have optimism and more empathy.
Hope and faith are so vitally necessary in popculture, Children need real Heroes.
There should be an act of Congress to make John Williamsâ Superman music the official theme for the character. No matter the medium. They should figure out a way to have it play in the comic books!
@@willieholmes1483 I'm all for that. At 46 years old I still get goose bumps and a little choked up every time I hear it.
@@Cyborganna I know that is the complaint about Cavill, and I believe Cavill himself said he wished he could do a film more reflective of his predecessors. He's a big fan of the originals. It's the script/WB that made his Superman that way which is sad. He definitely could have pulled off a more softer and heartfelt Superman. You can see glimpses of it here and there in his movies but it's so overshadowed by them making him act as a weapon more than a man.
He made me believe a man could fly!
annette oâtoole!!!!! so good to see you girl!
It is truly an honor to see someone from the Superman movies talking about Chris reeves now a days
Chris reeve is an all time great. He is hands down IMO the best actor to take on superman. He played clark in a beleivable way no other actor has. its easy to be play superman, whole other thing to play bumbling Clark Kent. But Reeves did it to perfection, truly encapsulated the Humanity and complexity of the character, he was Superman. Rest in peace

As bad as Superman 3 was it still has a special place in my heart, Robert Vaughn does bad guys so well.

OMG what a great story! I would have been in awe as well. It wasn't just a role Christopher Reeve was Superman!
Sheâs still beautiful!......there is only one Superman MR Reeves
You know what makes Reeve's performance so great? It's because he understands what makes the character work. He understood why people don't recognize Clark Kent as Superman. He played the role as two separate characters. While other characters have a "secret identity", with Superman, Clark Kent IS his secret identity. He plays the part of Kent as a lanky, naive and clumsy geek who looks as threatening as a butter knife, but as soon as he removes the glasses, he straightens up, lowers the voice and becomes a God-like figure. THAT is why Reeve will ALWAYS be the DEFINITIVE Superman!
You're on the same page as Bill in "Kill Bill Vol 2.". Seems like his opinion was informed by Reeve's performance as Clark was not a buffoon in the comics or early serials and TV show.
Hearing how she reacted to seeing Chris as Superman for the first time makes me unreasonably happy.
"48 hours" was such a fantastic movie. Both my favourite Eddie Murphy movie AND my favourite Nick Nolte movie. So underated film
Chris was, (and still is), one of the greatest actors. Somewhere In Time, that ending when he returns to the present and the aftermath, is just incredible acting and has me bawling every time. Didn't deserve what happened to him.
Christopher Reeve is the G.O.A.T. Superman. No one has come close yet.
Henry cavill did and is.... I believe Chris even knew of Henry before his passing as Henry had been trying get the role of superman for sometime before he finally got it đ

Annette O'Toole was a total babe back in her prime so I'm not at all surprised Christopher was extra helpful and courteous towards her, but then again Chris always seemed like he is that type of person who cares about others.
She still makes my heart bounce faster.
4:30 Absolutely agreed, highly recommended to everyone to see that film. A beautiful love story with the most lovely score by John Barry. â€ïž
I am just repeating what many have said but Christopher Reeve has always been the best Superman and Clark Kent. He was because I think he was a class act when the cameras werenât rolling. I have heard story after story about what a wonderful and kind man he was. We donât have a lot of actors like that nowadays but they are there. The tabloids donât cover the kindness of people as well as their darker sides. Thatâs why hearing these stories from people that actually worked with them are good to hear. It confirms what we hope them to be.
We lost a GREAT Superman, a phenomenal actor and sich a compassionate human being! R.I.P. Mr. Reevse! Truly a legend!
Wow! Thanks for this. I'm glad to hear this story.
Underrated film; the evil Supes vs. Clark battle was great. Reeves had so much range.

Not only is Annette a stunning beauty but her speaking voice is like a dreamy siren song.
amazing that she still has the voice of young Annette. Voices usually take on an 'older' sound. I'm thinking she was never a cigarette smoker, but I'm not sure.
Tom Welling was a great Clark Kent as he never officially donned the monicker of Superman until he defeated Darkseid. Rosenbaum though? My generations definitive Lex Luthor. Will say, love the modern DCEU, but comparing Rosenbaum to Eisenberg is like comparing beautifully polished apples to crack cocaine.
Absolutely
I know this is gonna sound weird, Eisenberg was weird to me. It didn't make sense, it's like there was a piece missing. Then in justice league, they put him in the gene Hackman-esque suit and it all made sense. Aside from Rosenbaum, lex always had a bit of flamboyance in his style (Hackman, spacey, eisenberg) and after seeing him come full circle, I'd love to see him again being full lex.
I'm in my mid 60's and have seen all the movies and TV series. Rosenbaum is the best Lex by a country mile. None of the other actors came even close but some of that is they also portray Lex as kind of goofy. As for Eisenberg, he sucks. I love the Man of Steel movie and feel it is the best portrayal of superman with the exception of Eisenberg.

That's such a great story and some really wonderful, bittersweet reflection from Annette about Christopher Reeve. The way she described how he was able to inhabit the Superman character, especially after contrasting it with her experince shooting the Clark Kent scenes, it made me really smile.
Superman III has the best version of Clark Kent, and if you could edit the corniness out of that movie, there's actually a really good movie hidden in there that's based around Clark and Lana. Also, Reeve was at his biggest and most "mountainous" in that movie.
as much as i love him as Superman my favorite film of his of anything he ever did is Death Trap (1982) anyone who hasn't seen it must see it he plays against the great Michael Caine and Dyan Cannon plays Caine's Wife as well it's well worth a watch

all due respect to Tom Welling, Henry Cavill, etc - but Chris Reeve IS Superman
Reeves will always be my childhood favorite, but in the modern era, Henry Cavil is second to none. I wish they utilized him even more.
What do you mean all due respect...? THOSE guys are the ones that have to respect CHRISTOPHER REEVE
The only reason Kidder was being pegged as "difficult" on Superman 3 was due to her justifiable spat with the Salkinds over Donner's disgraceful firing from the previous Superman production. The Salkinds ruined the Chris Reeve franchise.
Yet there wouldn't have even been a franchise without them
@@andrewg2618 And yet like a lot of rich families trying to push their way into movie production, they had no idea what they were doing and had enough arrogance to think that they did. Then after screwing up 1-3 they moved Superman 4 to cheap skate Golan-Globus Production and they REALLY messed things up for Christopher Reeve.
There were other financiers who could have produced Superman other than the Salkinds. Rumor has it that Micheal Douglas' production team had also been interested. He produced quite a few high profile, top quality films because he knew what he was doing.
She is so cute!!!! I love the stories she told here.

So lovely to hear this.
I love both of these actors so much!!!
Love Annette. Always was impressed with her choices in the early 1980s. She is the best part of Superman III, not including Reeve of course. Loved her as Lana. One of the best cast decisions ever. Shame the film was shiteâŠ.
I respect the older generations opinion, but itâs all about what Superman hit you at what time. Lemme paint the picture for you. Itâs 2012, the chips were down, Welling had been away for a year as Smallville had concluded in May 2011. WB refused to make anything but Batman, finally, a new Superman project came out that didnât just regurgitate Reeves character (No disrespect to Superman Returns, but that time had passed, the Christopher Reeves had died in 2004, you canât keep a character in the same early 70âs mid 80âs placement or else you kill the character the man himself and many others beloved). A fresh take, so I sit in the audience, I watch, and yes Snyder had to put nostalgia in somewhere, so a familiar villain, General Dru-Zod, I watch Man of Steel and Iâm captivated by it. See Man of Steel is a 1) 21st century Superman and 2) Superman that doesnât solve all the problems by himself because he needs his friends the Justice League (same as the comics).
True, you guys read the comics from another time (namely the Golden and Silver Age), when Superman ONLY needed Superman, but i feel the evolution of character to him being a symbol for the galactic community and needing the Justice League because as one comic states âSuperman isnât God, he canât be everywhere at once.â Is fairly adept character evolution and Man of Steel just encapsulated all the modern era changes that needed to take place with Supermanâs character for him to survive and not fall into obscurity. Reeves will always hold that place in my heart as the Superman that set the template for it all, later comics, Lois and Clark, Superman the animated series, Smallville, Justice League animated series, JLU, and Man of Steel. It is truly sad the studio challenges faced after the initial Superman film, especially Superman 3 & 4, I believe had those not happened, and people would have known how to treat Superman besides just Reeves something truly special could have came out of it. Brainiac was MEANT to be the villain of Superman 3 and instead Richard Pryor yucked around for 2 hours. Just trying to give a little perspective from mine and other younger fans points of view.
That guy that Snyder put in "Man on Steel" is NOT Superman.
I love Annette in everything she has ever been in. I love her even more now that I know she is a fangirl like me!
Love these stories!!!Somewhere in Time!!!!He was amazingđ„°
