16mm is such a stunning medium. The 'digital look' is ever-changing but film always feels familiar - maybe that's why people describe it as a 'timeless' look? Shot for the experience Bru!
Totally Bru!
Film feels familiar! Well said
@@DanMace Dan there are 2 great video apps I recommend that you download to your iPhone, they are 8mm Vintage Camera and Vintage Film Camera Retro Art, watch this short video czcams.com/video/CymwCbSXxHU/video.html
@@DanMace brother you should totally make a video about how you do all the animations for these videos. All the bits in between the actual footage, where you explain things. I love them and I can not get anywhere close to the results you do.
Go have a look at what Park Chan-wook did on the iPhone 13. Very impressive 👏
A lot of effort went into this video 👏 It was brilliant, thank you
Thanks for the shout out bru! Glad you loved beyond borders! 😊❤️✌🏼
Totally Bru, always love your stuff!!😁💖
Jo Louis
16 mm got me far more. iPhone Looks artificial and the bouqet seems not real to me.
The iphone one looks like it was shot on a good camera and then was compressed.
Totally Bru
Maybe that's the new way to get the 'phone' look when all you have is a big camera?😂
@@DanMace love the 16mm look, its more grainy than I'd expected...the iphone bokeh looks so weird and fake, I think I would prefer the normal iPhone look over it... anyway really cool video mate :)
Oha noch ein Deutscher mit Geschmack💪🏼💪🏼
Sure the 16mm looks better, but what this video really showcased to me is that the story (editing e.t.c) is what really matters to create a compelling video.
Also, the production costs into capturing a great story. The scissor lift shot was great no matter which camera was used for that shot
The only thing that you can't compromise is sound
I didn’t think the 16mm looked better at all, are you just saying that because you feel you should?
What looks better is subjective and so is the style of content. I'm all for 16mm film/movie nostalgia but for this type of content I prefer iphone footage.
As Casey has been saying for years.
iPhone 7 Plus and then iPhone 11 promax. That’s all I’ve ever used to build this channel. What a Time to be alive!
Never thought I'd say this, but I love the Film one more!!
Haha maybe it's the new way to do your one-minute videos?😉
I think that 'cinematic mode' looks sloppy and even worse then the normal iPhone mode.
The video itself is great as always. Thank you, Legend!
Agreed. Would prefer everything was in focus than being distracted by the unrealistic "bokeh"
For suuuure! Really annoyed me
100% agree with this
Love this!! 16mm all the way!
Yo Andreas. Shot bru appreciate it!
Appreciate the work you put into this. Very eye-opening!
Dan’s Mastery at its best! 👏😌
Started watching on my phone, saw the film camera and switched to my TV. Amazing!
The amount of work you through on your videos it's reason enough for me to watch them. Ahead of the rest of the youtuber pack. Being creative and especially not being lazy makes you stand out. Great job man!
You're awesome, Bru. Not everyone in the arts and culture arenas are as willing as you are to share IP and legit (possible) income streams. I love your work. I love the ripple effect it has for South Africa, our arts and culture, and towards adding texture + richness to storytelling by leading by example
There is a feeling with the film that I cant explain looks so much more natural and pleasing to me giving me sort of nostalgia vibes
Dan Mace! Youre such an inspiration!
The best quote I’ve read is even the very best camera won’t make a dull and boring bad photo (or video) look good, it has to be well composed with the right light in the first place. In this CZcams clip the video content was interesting enough and well edited enough to make the iPhone look good.
This is what I call Dan’s treat, a video, Sorry a movie where he takes you to a journey full of breathtaking scenes and very inspiring.
You are awesome Bru
It's amazing to see the same shots in both formats like this! A fantastic experiment, Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This was so awesome. I’ve had the same experience shooting film photography recently. It just takes a lot more time and effort to shoot film so you appreciate much more. I’ve had so many good photos on my phone or digital cameras but I’ve never been as excited as when I get a roll back and see the 36 photos that I wasn’t sure are gonna turn out.
Love the video ❤️
With the film, it feels more easy to watch and you can really see the dedication to get the shot because you only have a certain amount of film to get what you want. I also want to say thanks for making this video and showing people that gear doesn't matter and that even for a 50 year old camera, you can still make a video completely suitable for 2022! Thanks BRU!
Thank you so much for your tremendous effort to put this piece together. YOUR EFFORT WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED BY MANY FOR
YEARS TO COME.
Well done, informative and entertaining. Too often I find videos about shooting on film to be full of inaccuracies and poorly researched. Thanks for doing the homework and getting things right. Doing the same scenes on both formats and getting shots of people and places was much more useful than focus charts in a studio. I'm going to show this to my cinematography students. Bravo!
Hi Dan, Always love your videos. Can’t believe your not over 1m yet. Your work is incredible and all that work to create this video. Amazing job. The 16mm got me emotionally with its timeless look but wow what alot of work.
You are so talented. Videography, content and story. GENIUS BRU!
This was exceptionally executed Dan! You inspire and amaze, you have also come so far! Discovery?! Absolutely nuts! I sincerely hope our paths cross one day.
Thanks so much Giovanni. It's been unreal working with them, I'm super grateful. That would be rad!
this is so amazing Dan! You showed perfectly what the magic of old school films is about and what characterized it as well as the digital side! Hyped for more bruh!:) thanks!!!
You're most welcome bru :)
As always, the way you animate your storytelling is out of this world. And I love how you play with your sounds. NOT NORMAL!!
NOT NORMAL!!
The intro alone is produced so incredibly well, can't wait to watch the rest of the video!
Thanks bru!!
💯
Loved this! Thx for the attention to detail all throughout this piece.
Brilliantly created, filmed, and cut. Pertinent juxtaposition. Story, story, story. Effortlessly engaged the entire time. Great job.
Exactly
can only imagine so much hard work goes into making something like this.. kudos and such good work bro.. keep it up and coming!!
Definitely Bru I've got an awesome team with me
Awesome bru’s! Loving these. Can’t wait to see the next one.
The amount of effort you put into these videos to say its amazing would be an understatement.
"With film you really have to think of every shot". Couldn't agree more with this and think that's what makes film so special. You only get x number of shots or minutes you can get out of it so every second is just as important as the next. I also think cause of this it forces you to think out the box and try get shots you wouldn't have gotten if you just had a digital camera.
Anways keep up the work! Really love the videos and appreciative of your efforts !
Dawg you are next level in CZcams storytelling. Thank you for the inspiration
Dan are you kidding me!!! Been following you since you join casey in New York and its just insane how much you have grown. I’m not saying in talent but in confidence and vibe. Could feel all the right feels in this and it was a sic idea done tastefully. I loved the 16mm blew my mind how well it came out and your editing is too good for words.
It was great to see the dedication you put into making this video, it's been excellent!!
This is absolutely amazing
Dan's mastery doing I best and making people proud
The fact you know how to load an arri flex means your an OG. Mind blow. Incredible video man. Hopefully we can link up when im down in cape town.
YOU REALLY KILLED THIS ONE BRU!! I really want to do that for my next film, even though I can't afford film, I want to shoot as if I'm limited and be SUPER deliberate on the story and what shot actually matter. Thanks as always Dan for inspiring me to dive deeper into creating!
My pleasure Bru! That's totally the way to go
Superb. Im a 70's kid, old school all the way.
Always love your video especially the way you tell stories it’s very captivating
The trolley making synced with the music is the best part of the video!
The magic is always happening in post.
I've took some 10 years old pictures from my archive and edit it with a new software on my PC.
And man, it looks even better than the new stuff i've recently produced.
So with the newest Ai technology, you can bring every old content to new life.
Film Vlog looks so good, it's like an out of time piece of art. But what else is looking good - is your montage with music matching the building cart process, really liked it.
Glad you enjoyed it Bru
wow, DAN MACE!! this video is mind-blowing. you make it seem like YOU'RE the INVENTOR OF FILM/PHOTOGRAPHY, absolutely brilliant work!! YOU'RE SO INCREDIBLY CREATIVE + TALENTED. wooh, all that EFFORT, BRAINS, TIME and MONEY put into this video is crazy, but so amazing, totally worth it if you ask me!! I truly hope more companies choose to work with you/fund your own projects to bring your ideas to life.
I just want to say that I appreciate that amount of effort that you put in to this video. Its amazing!
As far as the comparison.. I will always lean towards the vintage look. But that look can be achieved in post.. won't have the character though.. But the real take away from this video is the story telling and understanding the fundamentals of filmmaking, compositions and post production work...that will always be SUPREME over buying the latest and greatest gear.
First video I see on this channel. Excellent content, so much effort. LOVED IT!!!
The quick city shots looked great on iphone but the slower morning and evening shots hit on film
I'm always amazed in how capable phones are, but....
A huge part is cinematogrophy here, and the film just made it feel better than artificial depth of field and artifacts.
Epic video Dan. Enjoyed it, and the final 16mm vlog made me feel very happy.
This is why im going to shoot in LOG and then do film emulation, you dont have to carry a whole cinema cart around but still get a fairly similar, more stylized look
The amount of well-presented information is huge in this video! I think this is one of the best film-related videos I've ever seen. Great job, Dan!!!
Wow, thank you! That means so much to me
@@DanMace Cheers, mate! Keep inspiring 💪🏻
So True! Just start creating. Even if it’s „only“ with your phone! Thanks dan! 🚀 keep inspiring us!
So great to see this concept revisited. Lovely execution. Cheers!
The next Casey right here! The story telling, animations, videography, music... Everything was spot on! Bru.. you did awesome 🤙
Loved it. Great concept, editing, pacing and overall message! Film is the best! I wish it was cheaper to shoot on, but it’s only getting more expensive as time goes on.
Both films have their own vibe. I love it
Both were awesome in their own way but the concept of the story itself made the difference. What you shot and the edits were on point. Great video!!
Been watching all your videos Bru 📹. I am addicted. Keep it up
So proud of this one!!! Dan you are beyond talented!!!!
Thanks so much Raine you're the best!!
legit this whole video is a master piece. keep up the great work Dan!!!
Epic bru thank you
What an incredible video Dan! So much hard work and effort.
Glad you enjoyed it!
i think knowing that you only have a finite amount of film to use forces you to think a little harder about each shot, and causes you to shoot with purpose in a way that digital can't. but at the same time you're going to be less likely to try new things to get a really cool shot for fear of wasting the film. film is a great teaching tool.
I agree with your conclusion 100%. I love your work bruh keep pushing and making incredible stories. Thanks bru
Appreciate that Bru, I will do
What a masterpiece of a world you created Dan. I'm becoming a bigger fan every new video drop. Would love to meet you sometime and probably shoot something for/with you!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks so much Bru that's so awesome to hear :)
Another GREAT video from Dan Mace! Love your storytelling skills. You're a Master at the art!
Thanks so much Zario😁
Another really great video bru thoroughly enjoying the series thus far
That makes me happy :)
Thanks, Dan! You’re great for your camera is good.
The video was 🔥. Great work Dan Mace, you are an inspiration for lot of us.
🔥🔥
@@DanMace VLOGGING in the PAST Reboot, love it!
This has been litterally the most impressive video I've ever watched. I mean what the fuck, you built the trolley, rented a scissor truck and did all those seemingly unecessary thing, just because you've came up with this jdea in your head. Mad respect 🙏
60mm was more warm like music recorded on vinyl, iPhone very IG like what we all see everyday. Thanks for doing this, nicely done.
What I have noticed over the years is that a vintage look together with a natural hand held footage gives the most “authentic” feel as if you’re somehow inside your head reminiscing memories.
Well that is the thing. It only works like this because of your personal memories. I dont have that and i hate film look and film grain. I love how modern digital camera shots look with clean sharp image without any grain and noise
This is the energy we need
I had the privilege of shooting 16mm for two of my shorts and I have to say it is super fun and rewarding. I think using the tool that fits your project is important and if I am going to spend the effort of writing a script, hiring actors, and putting together a crew for a short film it is worth it to go the extra mile and shoot it on 16. The iPhone footage works for a vlog, but the depth of field feels fake and digital, the sharpening is too crisp, and you can tell it is shot on something cheap. For the same price you could get a mirrorless cam and probably fix all of those issues, but the feel that film gives will still be superior in my mind. The other fun thing about film is that you don't just get a digital file at the end of it. You get a physical reel that you can throw on a projector. It is a tangible reminder of the thing you spent a lot of time and effort on. Thank you Dan for doing this experiment!.
always coming out with the fire!
such a great video. the effort that goes into this video oh my..
Another great video. The book of great ideas just keeps giving.
Just discovered your channel!
16mm is absolutely my favorite, the random grain makes it feel alive…
The colors and how close it is to the human experience of sight.
The production valuing your videos is absolutely amazing just subscribed!
Sending some love from Paris.
I signed up for discovery plus specifically for Beyond Borders when it first came out. Good stuff
Amazing work bro! Your’re one of the big ones 🙏🏽
Appreciate that
I love you so much @Dan Mace pretty much the best creator on CZcams
so dope, love it brotha
Dan Mace! this is awsome my friend!!!THANKSSS
Digital is where it’s at in my opinion. Everything is so vibrant.
it's so inspiring and of quality what you offer us, thank you Dani. I have a similar idea with a camera from the 90s, I have to find out how to transfer the videos to my computer.
Are you shooting on tape or film? You could try find a specialist that converts old formats to digital
@@DanMace I'm going to shoot on tape, and try to find tutorials to export, congratulations again for your inspiring work!
Memories from past times, Dan. I'm happy to go with Sony & Apple kit 🎥 🍎
Hey DAN!! I been subscribed and my notifications bell is turned on! Since 36, Casey, boosted board, and NYC $1 pizza! GREAT JOB, Keep it up!
That welding helmet clip is amazing! I want a gif of that!
Ohhhhh😍😍 the 16mm looks so super awesome soft with beautiful colors and a great dynamic range. There is some miss focusing (cause to operate that camera needs DP + Focus puller), but it looks fantastic like dreamy adventure memories. Great job👍👍👍
WOW I learned so much from this video Dan Thank You. My real take away was to be more aware of what we are shooting with more purpose in the edit to get a more film look and feel kind of vide. Keep Creating your changing the world.
Exactly Bru that's the way
16 mm had texture and ambience can I say that about a film. it added something really special and even though all the pictures were the same content, ambience,
qualities of the whole frames and the whole continent were just not the same at all it was magical versus clinical
Thank you for your comment Deborah
While the iPhone has obvious better image quality less noise etc I must say one thing.
The artificial blur in the "cinema mode" and "portrait mode" etc looks disgusting. Edges are blurry and the effect is nothing like real depth of field. Like a weird glow throughout large parts of the video.
its grain not noise, big difference and in some applications its desirable
This production quality is must subscribe.
The film was so cool and I liked both in different ways. Excellent project Dan. Thanks BRU!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Djeeez the 16mm is gorgeous! Also great intro with the motion graphics Dan. Would LOVE to see your workflow/timeline!
It's a crazy one haha!
@@DanMace we can handle it!
Wowww! The 16mm looks surreal!!!!!! Big up Dan! Nobody makes content like you do...
you´re a legend bru! keep going!
Such creative idea man I love it. You are craazy
