so awesome creating this with ya bruuu. such a fun week
Matt Komo two legends. Great to see you here with Dan. ✌️ So much to learn from both of you.
Matt Komo good job
Matt Komo Wow what a helpful video! Just subscribed to Matt as well! Thank you for sharing! Would you like to collaborate on a nyc video? I have some great ideas I’d love to talk though!
Matt Komo dope that you are on Dan’s channel I will be heading over to yours sir!!!
This short film is more useful than hours and days in an actual filmmaking school where you spend over $3000... Bruh please do more of these, please make a more complete course. I'm literally writing everything down from your videos - I've created the file STORYTELLING and this is just amazing when you look into all you share more structurally.... I'm going learn from you so much. Thank you for creating this video with Dan.
If you did not catch the schooling here are the highlights
Bru:
Dan Mace's steps to film making
1. Develop an Idea
Leave your ego at home, develop an idea that is useful
[Talk to people, this is how ideas come together]
2. Write down your idea
[the most dangerous writing app]
get a stream of thought going.
research your idea
write a narrative structure
3 acts : Impact - why watch
Communication - talk to your audience
Persuasion - emotion leave your audience with a feeling
3. Turn words into video
make a shot list
be carefull of Location sickness
Idea comes first
Film making is fun, not snobby art
4. Cutting video into film
5. Release film on the internet
Create a thumbnail and title
upload the video
Thanks Dan for the schooling :)
I can't remember the last time I watched a Dan Mace film and didn't feel completely overwhelmed by your creativity and your narratives. Hands down the best film-maker I've ever come across. Thank you, bru.
It almost sounded like you were rapping to the beat at the start there Dan
Ayyy the best youtuber out there
I think it's because he was consciously writing the script to that music, don't you think?
Jib your way into Dan's vids?
Me?
That “these are some of the tricks” flowed hard
Your content continually leaves me wanting to take action - to get out there and film.
@Max Mustermann to me it isn't "like a drug", to me it's "an ambitious pursuit, a call to action".
It gets you pumped up, and if you're thinking about making films, it's that last drop of convincing that might make you think "fuck it, I'ma go make shit". It makes you want to make shit, and it definitely worked for me
I hope you understand how amazing your films are Dan! You're incredibly inspiring for my films and art.
You blow my mind with every single film. Unreal.
You and Casey’s chemistry is off the charts. Thanks for inspiring me with my own CZcams channel dan!
Shane Haley He’s the only youtuber I’ve ever seen completely surpass the “Casey style” of filming. It’s a completely different story telling style but his talent is way above and beyond. Casey is a smart “vlog” style. Dan is just amazing. A category of its own. He’s creating a whole new style. I thank Casey for introducing this amazing creator/artist to us all.
Great channel brother, feel free to check out mine!
Sub # 57!
That "clicking public scene" at the end gave me all the feels! DOPE COLLAB guys!
I respect how brutally honest you are about making film. Huge fan and I literally just found your youtube channel yesterday. Thanks for the awesome content, bru!
Dan, my Bru, this is hands-down the most authentic, well worded, and informative cinematography video I've come across on CZcams. For real. The perspective is everything.
Amazing stuff... The work you put behind every single vdo is just amazing.
Only a filmmaker would understand.
Flying Beast Great to see india’s finest here! 🙏🏻❤️
I subscribed to his channel after seeing ur tweet, he is surely one among the best you tubers in the world right now.
This video is wild! I'm a big fan of both you and Matt and was stoked to see a video with both of you in my feed 🤙 and you guys crushed this!
Aidin Robbins can you tell me Matt’s channel ive been lookin for it since i dont know who he is

Same man !!!
Really appreciated the advice in this video. The ability of film to evoke emotion is such an excellent point... I realize all my favourite films are my favourites because of the emotions they evoke, such as a feelings of inspiration, motivation, vulnerability, etc. Great work once again!
Thanks for the tips and the deep thoughts on editing! This has been the most painful thing of doing something so fun for the first time. But what you two spoke of really explained a lot about what I have run into and feeling about this first video I'm making!
*THE COLLAB I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR!!* Seriously, it was Komo's NYC video where I discovered his beautiful work over 1 year ago and has remained at the top of my list when it comes to inspiration. Then enter Dan, a total wildcard who came out of nowhere but has clearly established himself as one of the most genuinely filmmakers on CZcams. So amazing seeing these two minds work together, gave me a huge boost to try and finish a film of my own! Thank you for that, Bru
wow thats amazing!! Thank you so much! :D

Saw your reply to a hater on instagram dude, and i couldnt help but say dont feel down because i know a lot of people including me love everything to do with you... so please dont feel bad about the way you live cos theres people like me that believe in you
I’ve been on CZcams since it was created and only now I can say that all the videos I saw those years were actually garbage not only for their stories but also for the way they actually looked. Only right now with Creators such as you Dan and others (ex. Peter McKinnon, Casey etc) I’m experiencing real quality and emotions in every single video...And we have that basically for free!!! Thank you Dan for the work and the incredible dedication that you’re putting in what you’re doing. Having the ability to change someone’s day with just a few minutes of pure art it’s just something amazing. You’re incredible my man !😄
Bru, you have managed to find the perfect way to show the many problems new filmmakers experience, where they are surrounded with fancy yet mostly beautiful imagery without substance and how they need to find their own mix of good storytelling and beauty. You smacked it Bru!
Love this one guys! Def saw some of Matt's style throughout this visually. Both crushed it!
BRU❤ why I subscribed. I'm not a filmmaker or "creative." I'm not looking for ways to gain an audience. I just like you. You attitude, and general good humor.
Also you are super talented! Thanks for sharing your videos, Bru! ✌💚
I second that
Love your style, honesty and passion for the art. Keep it going, you're in your element.
I checked out every artist you have listed in the description and listened to their songs. And I gotta say it's INCREDIBLE how much time and thought you've put into cutting the specific pieces of multiple songs together to fit just a 5-10 second scene. I really admire your hard work! ⚡
WHOOP! love it when I get a notification for Dan Mace, always such a ride cheers BRU 👊
Yessssssss
finally..watch tower of turkey is getting some light..

TRUTH
there’s something so raw and unfiltered about dans film that i find extremely attractive in this culture of artificiality (in regards to media). their personable vibe that they consistently portrays, along with the equally personal story he is telling through film all create this style that is distinctly his own. that way that he goes about telling stories is just something i’m so on-board with. keep up the work bru.
Amazing collaboration and great video! Thank you Dan and Matt!
Dan you have to check out Brandon Li. That's a next generation filmmaker.

You are one of the most talented human beings. You give me such pride to be a south African and a creative soul. Been there since the start and watching you grow has been the most insane and inspiring thing. Thanks Bru, giving me light and inspo
Yes. Yes. Yes! This is your best upload yet, Bru. Keep them coming! I have been in a bit of a filmmaking rut and this is just what I needed to see today!
Mind blown! Honestly, this is exactly what I had been thinking about lately. Thanks!
My new favorite CZcamsr is Dan Mustache
Best video ever, this guy is awesome!!! Every time i need some motivation i watch this video!!! Thank you Dan!! Please never stop making this kind of films BRU!!!!
Your transitions are seamless Dan. You switch from South Africa to New York and then back again. Amazing!
YES! All the way from south africa! 1:13am
It’s kinda hilarious from all of Dan’s stories of how he used to be a mega-douchebag. He’s really genuine & positive!
He’s really turned around.
Your originality and approach to film making is inspiring and so unique. Cheers for your love of the art of film making and sharing it on this great platform. BRU !!
Art and storytelling lives on! Way to be an honest filmmaker and inspiration to future creators
_this is ridiculously helpful _*_bru_*
Also those leading lines 😍
I liked the one where he was on the corner of the building. Not sure why that one stuck out but it just looked really cool to me.
I'm confused. You say that pure beautiful imagery is dumb without impact and story, describe Matt as an excellent example to follow, and then I check out his channel... His videos are exactly what you argue against! He isn't telling powerful stories, he's traveling the world, making films of a thousand random beautiful images put together. I don't get anything from the films except, wow, that must be fun traveling the world and trying every camera/editing trick you can think of. I don't get it.
Morgan Murdock exactly
I totally agree

I don't know about you but I feel that is the point he was making. But I see what you mean as well.
Amazing as always! Your intro always gives me chills. So great! I love your style and vision. Thank you for sharing with us.
I am entranced by your videos Dan. I am an old English woman and yet your work has moved me. Your mind is fascinating. You keep making them and your fans will keep enjoying them. Thank you
Awesome advice as always Bru! but, unfortunately (please correct me if I'm wrong) you cannot make your own Thumbnails until you have 1K subs since 1/18. Si, No?1
Nah bru... You can upload your own thumbnails as soon as you verified your account with a phone number
You need 100 subscribers to get custom thumbnails. I just did it :)
@@Boringcapetownchick but I have 12 subs and I can upload custom thumbnails...? 🤔
Hey Johan, sorry for the super late reply! That's so crazy, I wonder why/how! I've never had that option :( Maybe it comes down to type of channel?

This one hit me hard. In early June I came up with the idea of making "A Film on How to Make a Film, When you Don't Know How to Film". After watching this, now I know I need to make it instead of wasting my ideas~ Thanks for the inspiration Dan, keep smacking it
seems like your creativity is back ...great to see that you're back at it again. luv you bru and thanks for your energy!
I think Dan is really talented, but honestly I’m always left confused.
How?
I am feeling fu*cked lol but seriously I’m in film school but learning about history wtf
@a21aaron Keep at it. History is important for networking. Alot of the game is knowing what you're speaking about when conversing with other creative minds. You're capable of whatever you set your mind to, but sometimes being amazing is setting your mind to the impossible and taking a leap of faith. Don't be afraid to aspire to your dreams.
Valor very true!! Lol thanks bro
Valor or thanks bru
Both you guys are amazing film makers. I’ve just started just over a year ago and I never even knew I had a passion for it. You guys make it look so easy and it definitely a lot of hard work! Great job on this thanks for the tips!
I must say this is my favorite video you have done. It's really thought provoking.
Who else immediately went and looked up the Watchtower of Turkey video?
They didn't teach us s#!t, bru.
Glad to see you heald and back.
awesome! such a great feeling after all your movies. And finally I am so always happy to see the notification of new video release! keep it up, love it!
You be the *Christopher Nolan of youtube* ❤
I'll be the Ishban Yadav.
Hey Mr IY
I'll be Tommy Wiseau.
Isn't this just another film that hasn't got a particularly good or original idea but just looks extremely good? I'm quoting you on the topic of the uninspired film era: "Films that just look really pretty, with no substance whatsoever." "One should never develop an idea for a film, based of of a film." And I'm not really convinced if this film has progressed beyond just being "a bunch of pretty pictures". I have to say that I really admire your work, but in the case of this film, I strongly feel that it's just another movie that catches your attention with good imagery but in the end hasn't got substance. So if you're just doing what you said is shitty, I can only conclude that you're just in for the money or whatever, while pretending to be sth special. Please correct my if I'm wrong.
Awesome Dan! I love how you show and tell- from the very beginning all the way to the end you keep us engaged, laughing, thinking, learning, and always wanting more. I can only hope to be half as awesome as you someday.....bru! 👊🏼
These are the words I needed right now. Love your emphasis on structure when creating without losing originality. You rock Dan!
first?
Lol thx
Only dan could be creative enough to make a movie about making a movie
This is the first film/idea in the BRU series that has felt authentic and I have believed in. Dan I feel like your voice is more relaxed and genuine here than in your other films of this series.
Keep up the good work. I am a fan of what you’re doing here. I don’t know that I’ll ever be a filmmaker but I do enjoy viewing.
Okay you’re back, though I lost you on the last one .... this was awesome. Your films always motivate me to make films!!! Love it Bru!
So your thumbnail, "what they don't teach you in film school" is what exactly? I'm trying to figure it out because I see a LOT of you tubers take a dump on film school and film school isn't intended to teach you EVERYTHING there is to know about FILM. If you're doing it right you'll NEVER stop learning and they TEACH you that in film school. Pretty sure that everything you said is taught in film school, they also teach you how to accept criticism which I've seen PM NOT be able to do on his Owl Film.
Modern Slice - You know... if you watched the film, you’d know that the title is clickbait. He literally talks about it.
I watched it Bellishen, he addresses CLICK bait, but where does he say ""literally" The title of this video IS clickbait"? Where, time stamp it for me as I didn't find it in the back end where he addresses it.
Pretty sure they don't teach you how to thumbnail and title your youtube video in film school, so in that far ass stretch than maybe the title wasn't clickbait.
Since I have you here, the editing "tip" provided by Matt. I read that (book) too. Were you gonna plagiarize the whole thing for us? Do you have any thoughts of your own on this matter?
It is clickbait, just report it. Wouldn't it be ironic if a film telling you how to upload was removed for doing what they say.
I don't care enough to report it lol, I would rather address it it head on with the actual creator than just "tell on them". It's funny when people reply FOR Dan though, implying THEY know what he means when they clearly don't.
You can consider it a "tell on them" if you wish. Dan asked the question of if clickbait annoyed watchers, I consider myself giving my response to the question via reporting it for clickbait.
Sorry Dan, I do respect you and your hard work, but I feel as though the narrative was just an excuse for fancy camera work and editing. Not very informative. Certainly not enough for a video entitled, "How to make a film". A better title may have been, "A few film tips, with a bunch of fancy shots".
But keep at it.........bru.
Read between the lines man ;)
Thanks for another great video. I enjoy the way you communicate in your films. ❤️
This season of your work has been very inspiring to watch dan, curious to see how the next season will differ, especially in terms of format & voice
Damn, all those video clips are wearing me out. I've said before in past comments that I'm along for the ride, but I don't get half the stuff you're going on about. If you would slow down a little, stop throwing a thousand images onscreen, and just tell me your story, I would appreciate your work just as much, even if I'm not an aspiring filmmaker. You seem to be living the good life without much suffering, so don't be the tortured artist. Life is good, so get smacking at it!
Yeah it feels like changing the tempo of a song every 2 seconds. The rythm seems off.
This guy aggravates my vertigo - you are so right, bombarded by all that imagery with, to me, no meaning behind it.
Callie Masters What drivel of BS is this comment? You have no clue. No clue!
I agree to a certain degree because: the friendship video with Africa Burn has been my favourite Dan film.
During the montage of “characters” at the Burn I thought I saw my Aussie cousin. So I tried to go over it again by dragging the play line and then slowing down the video. It turned out the 5 people I thought featured was actually like 20 people! ALL BEAUTIFUL pictures and shots!
All that hard work is kinda wasted because I know the brain is meant to be able to see super fast, but a lot of content just isn’t being taken in.
I think it’s a pity as film making is a LOT of work so it seems a waste if it’s not translating.
Having said that, maybe it’s Dan’s style to have tons of squished secret content and he actually wants us to sit and slow it down and dig for the treasures 😂 That’s fun too! Dunno! 🤷🏻♀️
Never tell an artist how to do their art.
It urks me that you call these films for some reason. It's not a film Dan. it's a CZcams video. Your not a motion picture director. You make CZcams VIDEOS. Film. Video. Big difference. It makes you look snarky and pretentious. Sorry, didn't mean to be mean. Besides that I love your 'videos' and keep doing your thing... Sorry again.
"A film, also called a movie, motion picture, moving picture, theatrical film, or photoplay, is a series of still images that, when shown on a screen, create the illusion of moving images."
It is, by definition, a film.
I'll however agree that there's a stark difference between Internet filmmakers and big studio-affiliated filmmakers who's films are released on the big screen and it's important to keep in mind, while not diminishing the work of either.
you ain't the brightest are you? What you are refering to is a movie. A video is a short movie. A film englobes all of that. If it has a narrative, it is a film. Be it 3 minutes, 20 minutes or 2 hours. Dan makes films. Short films, but films.
Your definition is all fucked my boi
Film is not accurate for a good portion of large studio motion picture producers, either. Those blockbuster films shot on an alexa digital camera are (by your definition) videos. Film is an adopted noun to describe what used to be... um... actual film. ...as in the kind of honest-to-goodness real film I shot for most of my professional career. I.e., film a piece of plastic strip with an emulsion coating on it. The emulsion is light sensitive, and once exposed, requires a chemical bath (actually a series of them) to develop the silver oxide and dies (in the case of color) into a negative or transparency. I.e., the emulsion is " the film" of silver coating on plastic (or cellulose). This is where the term "film" comes from, not from any sort of production technique, whether an indie producer or major studio. So now, the idea (actually, definition) of film has somewhat morphed into a different meaning; it is a scripted (albeit loosely in many cases) production, whereby there's an attempt to produce a narrative, or story (i.e., documentaries are also referred to as films). The media used is typically no longer "true" film, but electronic, or video media. So what I saw in this presentation falls into the definition of how the term "film" is used today, regardless of whether it was captured on a hybrid camera, whether dslr or mirrorless. So, if this was produced exactly the same way, and edited exactly the same way on a 16mm Bolex film movie camera, would it still be considered NOT a film?
@@spec-productions5733 Yeah and people get paid in salt also.
I love your creativity Dan, can't wait for the next video.
I am pleased you’ve addressed this Dan... I have had filmmaking in my heart since age 11. I only really started making films about five years ago, but I have had a camera in my hand my whole life.
Best line “ Filmmaking is not about snobby art, it’s about having fun”
As a 35 year old filmmaker who didn’t go to film school, I find this really comforting.
Thanks mate 👍🏻
Dude i am so glad that i got to know about you and this channel. It’s amazing. You’re amazing
Great job Dan. I truly enjoy watching your videos. You have a really unique flair with this that keeps me wanting more. Hope things are going well with your shoulder. Stay safe Bru.
I love your content it makes you think on another level while being visually pleasing !
Bru. I love your channel so much. When you spoke about how a lot of today's filmmakers/youtubers put out content that is all glitter and no substance, I felt that. A lot of the bigger name CZcamsrs do this so much and it gets irritating sometimes. Thank you Dan!
I came to your Channel through Casey and out of curiosity, I thought it might be a short lived subscription but boy was I wrong, your videos are amazing and your ability to tell a story both verbally and visually is second to none, keep going BRU
Such a great message and fabulous story-telling. Worth repeated viewings as there's so much great content to digest. Big kudos to you and Matt.
Bru, I can tell you truly put in your all in your films. This film speaks volumes. Fantastic bru!
I'm in awe , this is all way beyond me but I love what you do. Look forward to every upload. 👍🇭🇲
Man, you are a vibrant soul. You are loved. Inspiring art, bru.
AWESOME! You are getting better and better each week... can't wait to see your next film in a week!
Probably one of the most amazing videos on CZcams. Great work!
Another masterpiece Dan.
Dan, your videos have helped me overcome suicide even before your channel blew up and when you injured your foot while surfing with Ben Brown. I just want you to know that you mean so much to me and you are a HUGE inspiration to me. I don’t know if you will see this comment but I HOPE that you will. I have written countless screen plays and I aspire to be like you and make films one day. If you ever wanna read one of my feature film length screen plays, you can. But I know you are way busy and way too creative to do that. I’m proud of you. You went from filming dance in Africa to this and knowing Casey neistat. I am SO proud of you beyond relief. You make me wanna Visit South Africa too. I hope that one of your films gets released in theaters one day so I can watch, and even if it doesn’t I’ll be so proud of all these films you release weekly. You inspire me so much. My family could never afford my education to go to film school (life long dream of mine), but I will continue writing screen plays and try to make my dream come true as a film director, like you have! Love you dan!!!
i cant wait every week to see your videos.Great job Dan.
Bru!!! You did it again !!! Super entertaining, inspirational and full of good stuff :) keep them
Coming bru! Wishing you so much success
Wow, that first shot in front of that 30 degree building. We have one like that in Cleveland. My wife said that an architect has built them all over the world. Then we noticed that many of your outside shots were with the subject centered between some other angles to focus attention on the subject. We learned things you didn't even talk about. Thanks Dan!
Cheers to both of you for this. A lot of people are getting caught up in the world of breathtaking visuals, new transitions, and exotic settings, but not putting any thought toward story. It's certainly not because there is no story to tell, you can turn practically any event or situation into a truly engaging narrative (don't believe me? Go watch Peter McKinnon's latest video). I'm personally guilty of producing content that lacks story from time to time, and I think part of that is because myself and other -- usually smaller -- creators can be afraid to express our own voice, so we simply hide behind a pretty picture. This video and all of the content Dan and Matt produce respectively is massively inspiring. I'm stoked that the two of you are pushing for content that is not only pleasing to the eyes, but also the mind.
Dan... bru this is revolutionary content, thank you for pouring so much gold
I know nothing about filmmaking but is a pleasure to see someone passionate about it talking about the craft.
Holy jeez, I'm at a loss for words. You gave it all away, except new filmmakers should know THIS TAKES TIME TO GET GOOD AT!
Big thumbs up Dan, can't wait to see the impact on filmmaking in the future.
