I worked at Best Buy in Florence KY, Chad Johnson used to come in every once in a while. The fist time I met him he was in his second year and hadnât become a superstar yet! I was chatting with him as he was picking up a stand for his stereo. A guy and his baby daughter were walking by and Chad saw that he was wearing an old 80âs âWelcome to the Jungleâ Bengals sweatshirt! He excused himself, went over to the guy and said, âHow are you sir? I just wanted to come over and say thank you for supporting the team, and I promise with all of the new guys and coach Lewis we are working really hard to make the team something you can be truly proud to support! Iâm sorry we let you guys down last week but we are going to turn it around.â The guy realized who he was thanked him, asked if he would sign a ball in his car and took pictures with him and his daughter including holding his daughter! This is the type of person he always was even as his star started to rise! Heâs humble, appreciative and kind to everyone I saw him meet! Heâs a wonderful person!
Welcome to Taco Bell, can I take your order??
Barry Sanders was and always will be the most exciting player I've ever seen on the field.
Spot on, especially given the offensive line he had with the Lions. Every yard gained was his own.
Thatâs part of his legacy though. A lot of his best highlights are six yard gains, but he juked and broke tackles starting 7 yards behind the line of scrimmage.
I couldn't agree more...I've argued with a couple friends because they say Tyreek hill is the most exciting ever but I nicely remind them that they're out of their damn mind and they either don't remember just how good/entertaining Barry was to watch or they simply just didn't have the opportunity to watch him much...don't get me wrong I'm not even a chiefs fan and I love watching machines and hill play but Barry is Barry and they'll never be another one like him
He is my second favorite player all time after elway and easily the greatest RB ever.
People who say otherwise donât realize the dude did all that with guys like Rodney Peete as his QB and the defense was always stacking the box against him.
I spent 15 years working for Southwest Airlines as a flight attendant. I got to meet Brian Urlacher, Bo Jackson, Malcom Smith, Marshawn Lynch, and Jerry Rice. They were all down to earth and just really appreciated the fans who supported them. I now do part time firefighting and collect cards. I've been collecting since I was 9, I'm now 50 and still building my collection. My all time favorite card I have in my PC is the Topps 1955 card #68 The Four Horsemen. Thank you for all the videos you produce!!!
OJ Simpson was my favorite growing up. When I first started watching football he was the biggest star in the game.
What about after he murdered them people? Were you still a fan?
@@im11sostfu86 no, certainly not a fan of that.
@@im11sostfu86 but, still my favorite player growing up.
I met Otto Graham outside of Browns stadium on a Saturday before a game. It was a legends weekend and he was with his wife and another couple. He was very nice.
Always fun to open a box. However Iâve learned from watching you open this and the 1987 fleer basketball box that it is never a good idea to hunt for the mint condition RC.
In older boxes that is
@@jaytay1995 As someone who breaks alot of Vintage wax its extremely hard to hit PSA 10s in these boxes, Best to buy and keep sealed. So many factors as well Large sets, May be good box but not hit anything due to all coming from a bad sheet and BBCE missing a searched box(They're not Perfect as we have found out)
Very true
@@cardmansales9376 when Topps started doing Topps Chrome basketball not a lot of that was produced in comparison to late 80s-mid 90s stuff(Hoops,Skybox,Fleer Ultra etc...) Early 2000s are the good times! Topps Chrome đ and đ cards are đ„
@@cardmansales9376 Baseball was more overprinted than basketball for many years. There was little demand for basketball in the 70s through 80s when products came out. 87 Fleer Basketball is actually rarer than 86.
I have three athlete meetings of interest to mention. My favorite meeting will always be Dale Murphy (Braves legend who should be in the Hall of Fame). Met him at games a few times with my family and he is always polite and welcoming.
Also met a couple WWF wrestling legends. Bret the Hitman Hart is one of the nicest pros Iâve met. He stood outside, in snow, for almost 10 minutes after an event and talked with my brothers and I.
Also, Shawn Michaels. My little brother went up to him and said, âMr. Michaels can I have your autograph?â He said, âSure, but just call me Shawn, not Mr. Michaels.â He said it with a smile and signed and talked with us. Great times.
1984 Topps is probably my second favorite 80's football card design, right up there with 1982. Loved the logos on the front.
My two favorite sets to.
That was the best design of the decade. 1982 was the first year they had the NFLPA license and could use logos.
Gale Sayers and Floyd Little were my heroâs growing up..
Good break and great trip taken together down memory lane!!! Always great and fresh content!! Congrats Geoff!! đđ» đ
Loved the Raiders when I was a kid, had a Howie Long poster "Real Men Wear Black" and Bo is the greatest athlete I ever saw in person. As a Vol, got an up close view of Bo running over Bates. No guarantees with old wax, topps was notorious for using an A/B/C/D, etc... rolls and some boxes may only have that one roll without the RC's.
This set deserves a lot more fanfare and the Marino and Elway PSA 10âs should be worth a whole lot more!
I absolutely agree. Its a great set. I actually have 2 sets that I built and 1 factory set that is untouched. The cards still look like a brick, kinda like an unopened vending box. I lucked out a few years back on Ebay. I don't think they knew what they had. I paid like 100 bucks...
Watched my 1st ever SB as an 11 year old in 1982. Joe Montana was/is my favourite player. Gotta get his rookie card this year.
I was 12. Me and my cousins all watched it in my parents basement. Joe's the GOAT
I was a equipment manager for the original Dream Team so I met and played my 1st 2 rounds of golf with Mj Charles Barkley and John Daily Larry Bird. I hit a 78
Love this set! Not every day you see a box being opened. Awesome stuff!
I got to meet Willie Mays in a baseball suite at the inauguration of the minor league baseball field in Fresno California. He autographed a ball for me. SF Giants are my hometown team and he is still my favorite baseball player of all-time.
Roger Staubach is my favorite player of all time. Even though my cousin is Tony Dorsett!
I met Yoggi Berra in the 1980s at a New Jersey Devils game. My uncle pointed him out to me. He singed my game ticket. Also met Gronk after a UA wildcats game.
I met Jerry Rice in San Diego. He was walking out of the elevator a few years ago at the Omni hotel. Was in total shock. Door opened he walked out. I shook his hand told him I was a huge fan and his fingers went past my wrist. Only wish I could have gotten an autograph on a card. Seemed like a great guy. Love your channel!! Just started watching it recently!
That's my buddy Gregg Bingham that you passed over at the 12:31 and 40:38 time stamps in this video. Gregg was an avid coin collector (numismatist) who assembled the finest Early Commemorative United States Half Dollar Collection known. Gregg started and played in every game during his career without missing a start. Great guy! By the way, his 1984 Topps card here currently has a low population of only 8 in PSA 10 Gem Mint.
Fun break! Thank you for sharing! Thurman Thomas is my favorite player Iâve met. Jim Kelly would have been another potential pull from that box but he opted to go to the USFL.
Congratulations on Dan Marino and John Elway card
I went to Monday Night Football in Dallas on Labor Day in 1992. I was 14 and a sophomore in high school. The Redskins were in town. Dallas upset them. Hank Williams Jr. was there and sang the MNF song. We waited in the players parking lot. We met and got Autos from Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin and a few others. I got their autos!! Both of them were really cool. Good Times!!
Thatâs awesome!!
Hopefully you rechecked them packs & picked up the 2nd Darrell Green RC!!!
Barry Sanders and Randall Cunningham were my childhood favorites.
I opened a bunch of this from my LCS as a kid in '88 and it was a blast. Love seeing you dig into this. Congrats on the Elway and all the other RC's from this epic set.
I meet Prince Fielder in Marysville,Michigan while I was getting Cecil Fielderâs auto when I was 13 years old. Prince was bigger then his own Dad,after leaving my Dad a I both looked at each other and said âcan you believe how Prince is compared to his Dad at only 12 years oldâ at the exact time while gettin in the Truck. Thatâs what got use hooked on collecting sports cards. My Dad was the foreman on the ppl mover back then so he knew the Detroit area really well, every weekend we would look at the back of the Becketts to see where the Card shows were at. I remember seeing in the Becketts every month and seeing that Mickey Mantleâs rc was only $5000.00 dollars,Thank God my Dad bought one graded at a PSA 9 !! He passed away shortly after in 1993,so in honor of my Dad I keep collecting Cards. Iâm Seriously thinking about flying to an Auction to sell that Mantle thatâs been sitting in my safe since then. What do you think Jeff about selling it or holding onto it ? Looking forward to hear from ya Budđ€đșđžđ
Jeff Lageman! Awesome person, great outdoorsman. Ive had the pleasure of fishing with Jeff and became friends with him years ago.
I met Gary Clark at a signing around 92 at a foot locker. No one else was there. He was laughing at the rookie card I brought cause of his Afro. Nice guy!
Once I met John elway at Elways in Denver. Religious experience. I was with my wife and she didnât understand the importance of that experience. The comeback kid shook my hand and I almost cried
When I was a kid my goal was collect all Topps Football sets from the 80s . It took a long time but I did and still have them
I love watching the cowboys....big Emmitt Smith fan and of course Troy Aikman
An enjoyable trip down memory lane with these cards. I got the set for Christmas in 84 when I was 9 years old. Played with the cards of course and traded the Marino to my friend a few years later. I have since bought ungraded versions of Elway and Marino just for sentimental value.
The Elway & Marino finally! đ€Šââïž Ark monk card was awesome to see. Great players. I enjoyed the entire video. Thank you for sharing. Thumbs up!
When I was stationed at Ft Lewis, WA in the Army, I recognized Jon Kitna at an Elmer's restaurant and he talked to me and my daughter for a good 10 minutes while I was in uniform. He ended up telline thank you for your service and I asked the waitress for my bill and she replied with the guy you were talking to paid your bill. So Kitna bought me and my daughter breakfast. Pretty cool memory.
Joe Montana was my favorite. As crazy as it sounds, he actually seems underrated now.
Mine too. Itâs because the youngest of us that saw him play is forty. Iâm sure in the 80s you had forty, fifty year olds saying Sammy Baugh is underrated.
This is awesome Jeff!! Great way to start off Superbowl Sunday!!
Curtis Martin: I met Curtis at a training camp practice at Hofstra University and he signed an official game ball for me. My favorite piece of Jets memorabilia I own.
Love the 49ers! Joe Montana and Jerry Rice were my heroes as a child!!!
Love this set. The rookies and the instant replays.
Back in the early 90's there was a huge flea market near the Buffalo area and they had these packs for sale. I bought three packs can't recall how much I paid for them. Anyways I pulled two Marino's out of the three packs and still have one of them. Thanks for this Jeff!
super flea
Elway was my guy too Geoff, so many memories especially "the drive" in 1986 against the Browns I was 15 and waited years for Elway to finally win the big game against the Packers in 98 as 14 point underdogs and that game was so close to home when they played in San Diego I wanted to go but outta my price range so went to a friends house, and when they won I balled my eyes out like a weight was lifted off my shoulders just like ELWAY. Top 10 if not Top 5 QB's of all time.
I remember opening up a few boxes of those back then. I was in my early twenties. They were a great set to put together. I remember your Elway and the saga of maybe signing with the NY Yankees opting for baseball instead. Every time I see that Marino card my head explodes. To think the NY Jets were able to draft Marino but chose Ken O'Brien amazes me to this day.đ That was very entertaining to watch thank you for the trip in the wayback machine.
Walter Payton favorite player! Allen and Payton for second rushing yards. Dang, got it wrong :)
John Elway was my hero too, and still love him.
At 27:23 moment of video you blew by another Darrell Green rookie
I got to meet Sugar Ray Leonard, I was working for what turned out to be his Mom, selling pork rinds and I went to her house to get more product to sell in this swap meet/Flea Market and he was there. I knew exactly who it was as I thought he was the best ever, he was my so called hero. Still one of the most shocking and amazing days ever. He was very cool, and we had dinner the next night. He treated me as a 15 year old, very kindly and was so down to earth. I thought later in life that he was so laid back and chill because he was at his Mom's house and in a comfortable place.
I used to love watching Walter Payton,Barry Sanders and Icky Woods. Warner's rookie has value and T.D from Broncos was one of those cut short playing career that was a beast, as well as Bo Jackson
I was starting to get worried for you UNTIL , enough said đ
Mine was John Elway since 1987 and he still is my favorite player and always will. I have this set and it's my favorite.
Pretty nostalgic made me have lots of memories I opened a bunch of those packs when I was little
Riggins
Dan Marino came to my local Sam's club in Springdale Arkansas. He was doing a promotional thing for some kind of mattress. My dad called me at 6 a.m. and told me that he had heard that Marino was going to be there for a signing. I had already bought a Dan Marino jersey and a Dolphins helmet, I flipped a quarter to see witch I would rather have autographed. Tails, Dan autographed my helmet and I still have it sitting on my mantle to this day!
I was fortunate enough to have worked at the Sheraton Torrey Pines as a Butler in 1992. We had the Dream Team stay with us for two weeks and I go to meet all of the greatest basket ball players that ever lived. Magic, Jordan, Malone and Barkley were super cool. The stories I have are in a vault...no cell phones back then, but I could tell you some interesting stuff LOL. My favorite was playing pool with Wilt Chamberlin and my "man crush" Christian Laetner LOL
Huge thumbs up man! Love the 1984 topps football. Marino and Elway. Congratulations. That was just a great great video. 1986 topps football is next!!!
so hard to get those card psa 10 - shows you why the value is high. the elway was beat and the marino even wasn't close to a 10 - and you opened them fresh out of a box. Insane. Great pulls anyway and always a fun time when you open cards on the channel.
Great video, I always enjoy you work and appreciate your time and effort đđŒ
I got to meet Sparky Anderson and Ernie Harwell when The Tigers played in Seattle back in the early 90's.
Marino was the only QB at that time with current QB stats, when guys weren't doing that, way ahead of his time. Best arm maybe in NFL history, I was always amazed how far he could throw in the old Pro Bowl QB challenges they use to have. What a cool box, all off center in the same way, tells me it was legit.
I love 1984 football. Another nice one is 1983 baseball. It's always nice when a box has more than one potential rookie card. 1989 score football is another crowd pleaser.
Grew up a Giants fan. So either Simms, Joe Morris, L.T probably my favorite from back than. When Parcells went to New England I went to New England as well. True story!
That was fun. I grew up in western ny in the early 90âs so we liked Thurman Thomas and imitated Bruce smith. The bills used to travel around in the off season after losing Super Bowls đ, and play basketball against high schools alumni. I met Jim Kelly and played catch with him for a few throws. I liked the card where the guy was a qb/punter, and Steve largent. . Hot hand with the big three rcâs good pulls today. đâïž
Jerome Bettis was always a personal favorite.
Famous athlete for me; huge hockey fan from the 70s and 80s and got to meet Dave "Tiger" Williams after a game in the Chicago Stadium! Just a tough hard working player who would fight anyone at anytime.... I was thrilled.
My favorite player growing up was Troy polamalu. It was my first game I ever watched Iâm 2004 as an 11 year old kid. I became a steeler fan that year and Iâve been loyal every year since. I think every fan has one player who made them a fan of that team. If I werenât a steeler fan and I started watching football last year I probably wouldâve been a chargers fan because I absolutely love Justin Herbert.
True. Iâm older, so my player was OJ Simpson. He was probably that player for a lot of fans my age.
Here's the thing, opening a box like this is fun, no doubt, and Jeff has a fortune so he can do it and it won't hurt his pocketbook what-so-ever. However, for the average person, there is an alternative that can get you high grade cards for way less. Search around, shows, shops, different marketplaces, and find several sets. Chances are you will eventually fine on that has a really nice Marino or Elway, or both. I just bought a set for $150 with a Elway that looks amazing, a Marino that is probably an 8-9, and the rest of the set was very nice. The set was collated back in the 80's and had been in storage since. Sets like that are out there, the hunt to find good deals on gem RCs in sets is fun, and you will often get them cheaper that way and can grade if you want. And you can pass on the ones that aren't nice.
I grew up with Bernie Kosar and the Kardiac Kidsđ€Ł
my favorite too was John Elway awesome GEOFF thanks again for bringing this to us!!!
Favorite player that era was actually Curt Warner. Huge hawks fan. I would play football in front yard and had his jersey. I have a couple of his rookies from when I was a kid.
My favorite athlete I met was Nolan Ryan...at a grocery store while fueling my truck.
He pulled you in a dulley that was pulling cattle trailer
At that time he was pitching for the Astros and he was my favorite player on that team.
Very cool! My favorite players watching play growing up was Barry Sanders, Ken Griffey Jr., Michael Jordan, and Kobe Bryant! đđ
What a fun video to watch! Glad you got an honest box and pulled the big boys.
Randall Cunningham was my QB hero in the day with the Eagles! Paved the way for a lot of other running QB's for sure and I got 3 of his rookies from 1987 topps!
I honestly just remembered mostly 90s and up players once I became old enough to know about players and cards
I went to high school with Frank Thomas in Columbus. I also have several pics with Hershel Walker as my old company bought chicken from his company. Both are super good people!
Love seeing those 84 Topps. Enjoying seeing my fav teams (Chiefs and Lions).
I'm looking forward to watching these packs getting opened...good luck
At a card show in Orlando in 1985 there were tables stacked up with 100's of these boxes at six dollars a box. Loaded up the back seat and put together two dozen complete sets.
Growing up Chargers were my team and Wes Chandler is my all time fav player đđŒđđŒ someday I will open one of these boxes good stuff Geoff.
Barry Sanders for me as a Lions fan. I went to a game when I was 5 (my first NFL game). Only things I remember from that experience was who we played (Bucs), the fact that we won, looking at the Silverdome roof, and Barry Sanders running a 50+ yard TD.
I actually just bought a Barry RC for my birthday a few months ago. Happy to have that in my PC.
What an awesome break. I remember buying these at my local pharmacy when I was 12. My team, the Redskins, were world champs, and all was well in the world. Brings back so many memories. But these were never printed perfectly. There's a reason why PSA 10's are so expensive. They are unicorns.....
Remember the rack packs?
@@GriseldaBSF410 Yes! Used to get those at the grocery store
I have been around many sports stars. I am from Atlanta and reside now in Myrtle Beach. When I lived in Minneapolis for a VERY short time, Kirby Puckett was honestly the best guy ever. I have seen him sit outside of the HHH Metrodome and sign autographs day after day for everyone around. Not 1 kid left without an autograph. R.I.P. Kirby. The game needs more of you!!
This video definitely reminds me of it, but meeting John Elway at the 1992 Super Bowl Experience convention was incredibly memorable. He was really kind and signed his full page photo in our programs for free. Easily one of the best HOF athlete encounters Iâve ever had.
I like the cards for some of the kickers that set like Raul Allegre, Rohn Stark, Gary Anderson, and Max Runager. Amazing hair.
This was the first set i really bought alot and got me really hooked on collecting!! Walter Payton was my favorite!
Fun video. Living in WA state growing up I was a huge Steve Largent fan so it was great seeing his cards and all the Curt Warners. Go Hawks!
Great video. I work at wingfoot my favorite athlete that I've met so far were Johnny Damon and Nick swisher. Coolest guys ever đ€đ€ and I don't know if u realized but u skipped right through that Jim Kelly rookie. That's a good one
Just wanna say..I seen you struggling to put that first card on the sleeve... here's a trick I use.. pinch the top open corner and just give it a roll... it'll leave an opening so you don't damage the corners or shred the edges...btw my favorite player growing up was Bo.. still is
i met michael vick in a target store when i was 16; he was shopping in va for linens for his mothers new house and i asked him if i could get a signature, and he said yes! brought two balls from in store for him to sign before i even purchased them. awesome experience
The second KC Chiefs game I ever went to I got to meet Neil Smith and Derrick Thomas. I got to talk to Derrick Thomas about the game while he drank a couple beers. He is my favorite football player of all time and my sons name is Derrick. I also have a Chiefs tattoo with the number 58 in the arrowhead!
Awesome! Congrats on your hits!!
My favorite player growing up?? Easy. Joe Montana. I'm a Bay Area native and I was fortunate to grow up during my Niners Dynasty era. Pretty epic time to have grown up in.
John elway is my favorite spots player of all time
Tom Seaver. He was my baseball idol growing up and I got to meet him at a signing event in Tacoma, WA
It was awesome. And he was super nice.
Fun break thanks for sharing this, love the old school stuff! Just a side note you missed a 2nd Darrell green RC, Chris Hinton RC, Jackie Slater RC and Morten Anderson RC, all those guys can bring in decent money if they grade high.
Mark Duper, Dwight Stephenson, Jimbo Covert, and Ray Wershing too.
Emmitt smith, with his running ability itâs amazing and astonishing what he can do.
I grew up in chicago so I got to see all the greats including the 1985 Chicago Bears and all the Bulls ships.
I met John Elway at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley Colorado 1984 for spring training he's my favorite of all time
Grew up watching the broncos favorite players were Elway, Davis, McCaffrey. My family had season tickets to the broncos in the late 90's and early 2000's .got to see Elways last game at Mile high stadium.
That feeling when youâre opening wax and score!
Randy Moss is my favorite football player of all-time. Also Tom Brady, but Randy Moss back in 98 and early 2000s phew. Also remember in 98 his rookie cards exploded.
