I like the butt pat strategy lol. The guys who taught me to play are a little more old school, they always want you to peel off the net toward the net call you make. So if you said you're blocking line, you need to peel off to the line etc..
The other day I was playing against a team who shanked the ball to the sidelines and I was so tempted to follow the ball instead of the attacker but remembered this and covered the attacker instead. yay!
Can you cover court positioning for players that are not tall enough to block? Let's assume the other side is about the same height and the chances of sharp downward hits are low.

Regarding the 3rd common error, when the passer goes and hit behind the setter, I revert to blocking line-line (or cross-cross, but its agreed upon with my partner before the game). So that there is no surprise. I do so because, I feel that the butt slap is likely to provide the info to the opponent.
