My favorite OMD song. It gives me chills every time.
This song is always a highlight on their live shows. It is awesome!!
Sorry , your mistaken , it’s shite !
👍🏴
You still have to do "Souvenir" - you will love it... It starts very gently and then, a few bars in, this wave of synth just wells up underneath you, picks you up and carries you away... It's beautiful....
It’s is indeed
My favourite 👍
Best track
Right on
Awesome song _and_ a tribute to the French heroine? 10 out of 10.
This song is unbelievable and the whole Architecture and Morality album is amazing
FADE TO GREY VISAGE you will lose your mind all the best CORK IRELAND
All of OMD's songs are absolutely brilliant and underrated (yes, saying this as big as they were) - thanks Dereck! I can't agree more with "can't top that" - they are New Wave at its ultimate best!
PS - The drums give me goosebumps!
With clear reference to Joan D'Arc, where he sings..."She cared so much, she offered up, her body, to the grave." I always felt he should have sung..."She cared so much, she offered up, her body, to the flames." The place where this was videoed is called Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire. It's a sprawling, once monastic estate, and the abbey itself is very photogenic.
It's a history lesson too. Rouen...
Thank you so much Dereck for your reaction to “Maid Of Orleans”, I loved it heaps and am so glad that you loved the song as well and yep the 80’s will never ever be bettered for artistry and greatness, especially with those magical synths!!! And I love how OMD contrasted the beauty of the synths and mellotron with the dark and moody drums to take us back to medieval times, and I love so much too how the songs builds up, especially during the 2nd vocal part and then the drums kicking in even more!!! And the whole Architecture & Morality album was OMD at the peak of their powers and both “Souvenir” and “Joan Of Arc” were amazing singles as well!
One of their best song ! So unique ! 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌😍
You just have to hear this song out loud... I love it so much ❤
OMD SIMPLY THE BEST!❤
You must listen to Joan of Arc now that you've mentioned it. Both tracks were probably my favourite OMD songs from '81 👌🏼
Souvenir is a Must from OMD in my opinion their best song
Was waiting on this, powerful sound of synths n drums, music was so diverse in the 80’s so many different genres to enjoy.
A masterpiece 😊
I enjoyed this song when it came out. 1981-82 ushered in a musical movement in the UK called “The New Romantic” OMD, The Human League, Spandau Ballet and even Dollar were part of that. The female in the video sported a hairstyle and makeup look that was ubiquitous back then.
OMDs best Song changed alot back in the days
Just saw them in Stockholm last weekend, they have aged very well and it was a captivating show.
Vive Orléans !
🟦⬜🟥
Et vive la Lorraine ❤
Love OMD immensely and this is one of my top fav songs by them.
41 years old gem ❤
OMD did a lot of great songs, but this is of course they most haunting, greatest song.
Song approaches like this with unusual themes (historical figures, airplanes, telephone boxes, oil refineries, etc.) is what makes OMD unique. Joan of Arc led the French troops to war and that is what this song sounds like with the marching drums. Also, OMD tends to use major chord progressions for tragic themes. This song and Enola Gay are examples of that. Also, OMD sometimes doesn't use choruses and songs like this and Enola Gay really didn't need a chorus because the melody of the supporting instruments compensate for the lack of a chorus. The key change into the last verse and the combined choir, drums and string sounds, as you noted, takes this song to a cinematic level.
OMD really understood how to do a key change. Most people go up a semi tone or two, which is actually quite unsubtle musically speaking. But in this song the key changes down 3 semitones, which forces Andy to sing up 9! Good job he has the range.
My first concert. Mind blown
i wish this song was longer
Yep the bagpipe sound is actually a Violin sound from a Mellotron. A lot of people were convinced it was bagpipes for years, but Andy McCluskey said in an interview it was a Mellotron violin sound.
A bagpipe cover is a necessity though.
OMD never disappoints.
this song needs to be played LOUD.
Good critics of m'y favorite song. Good job. From France. It's a pleasure to see your videos😊😊
call me Oldfashioned but I liturally had Tears in my Eyes thinking Wowwww he never Heard or seen this song befor????? Its impossible how could you mr. Dereck.....????? Are you never/ever heard of Kraftwerk befor...????? You should listening to Ultravox The Voice or The Thin Wall.....??? But your follow up should be Maid of Orleans from OMD...???? This is even better back from 1981/82.....???? Its never too late Discovering late 70s - early 80s POP Electronica.....???? Shame you never heard of Kraftwerks Robots 1978 or Autobahn full 22 min Version from 1975 .....
Vive Jeanne d'Arc !!!
⚜⚜⚜❤❤❤
This is one of my all time favourite songs.
This is epic live, combined with Andy's infamous 'dad dancing' to the strobe lights :) Messages is another great track. Bit of background - in the early days the drums had to be laid down one piece at a time because the drummer couldn't play very well, but he was the only guy the band knew who had a drum kit!
Que de souvenirs. Merci Monsieur Dereck.
Imaginez remplacer les synthétiseurs par des cornemuses ou des bignous

I am so glad that you have discovered OMD. One of my favourite bands. I suggested OMD to you a couple of years ago because I know how much you like synths. Another song, Enola Gay is about the plane that dropped the first atomic bomb on Japan. The plane was named after the mother of the pilot. Some of their album songs are a bit weird but most of their single releases are brilliant.
A fantastic video as well.
Une pour tous ! Tous pour une ! Si Jeanne était de retour, elle sauverait la France.
Par rapport à quoi tu dis ça ?

Brilliant 👍🏼
The new songs they just released are just as good!
OMD was the very first band I ever saw in concert without my parents. I was fourteen, it was at Centennial Hall on the UWO campus. great day.
This iconic song was first released on OMD‘s 1981 album “Architecture and morality“ and in early 1982 it was released as a single, which became a gigantic hit. It Germany, it became the best-selling single of 1982.
Got my tickets today to see them in Leeds, England next March. Seen them twice before and they are amazing live.
Hello Dereck,I waiting for this Music from OMD.It's so great.Thank you Dereck for your reaction💝💝🐬🐬
Loved the reaction - and the “bagpipes” comment. *_/Thumbs up/_* from Glasgow.
Still going strong. Definitely one of the highests of seeing them live too be honest I think the live version sounds better
Still one of my favourites of the early 1980s. In my country it went up to no. 1, too. The nice thing was, that kids from my school, whatever kind of music they were actually into, loved or at least appreciated this very much.
I have always loved the sythpop fanfare feel of this epic!
I saw them live two times. This was great 🎉
This must fall under universal beauty because I cant fathom the idea that anybody out there doesnt love this song, or at least admire it.
Yes souvenir and also enola gay.my favourites.from OMD.
finally someone has reacted to this classic
The mellotron in this... OMD were so creative with what limited tech there was at the time.
This song still gives me goosebumps even after around 40(?) years
You knew I loved you if you got a mix tape with this song on it.
Is it me or does the melodies sound similar to the main theme (the Hiccup and Toothless one) of How to train your dragon ?
This song is definitely older but it feels really similar at some moments. Like one extra note here and there in the HTTYD theme, and a bigger orchestra. Inspired from this much ?
U need to watch andy dance Live at the end of this song under the strobe lights ...fooking awesome
What a song!
Everyone talks about the synth "bagpipes" (really a Mellotron violin) but the superstar of this mix is the drums.
I am amazed the military bands with pipes and drums have not found this masterpiece yet...
Check out 'Dancing' by O.M.D....The most weird instrumental in history.
30 seconds of Mellotron feedback before it starts proper and it's still my favourite OMD song.
For me the one of the best Songs I've ever heard. One of the best Song from OMD is Sailing on the Seven Seas
A very unique song you won’t get anything like it again.
Love your reviews on this 80s classic synth band ,can you please also do OMD song *souvenir* their best ever song in my opinion .
Höre ich seit den 1980 Jahren , für mich die besser Gruppe OMD ❤
i mean follow up should be " Joan of Arc " after Maid of Orleans.....
Joan of Arc Patrion Saint of France
That distinctive sound in this song is actually played on a Mellotron, not a synthesiser.
it helps if you know the history of the real joan of arc. it always bring me to tears, its a masterpiece of sounds
Try "The Romance of the Telescope"
I really don't know if you read comments here but I'd suggest
Come On Eileen - Dexys Midnight Runners
You should watch a live version of this....
OMD have a brand new album out in October.Genetic Engineering is a good one.
You need to do panodoras box by omd ...best song ever
The video was filmed at Fountains Abbey Yorkshire England.Lovely place to visit as I did just to see where this video was shot
And Brimham Rocks !
The Bee Gees also filmed 'You win again' there to !
Not seen, but have you checked out Joan of Arc? These two songs are my favourite duo
Request for you to follow up and do Walking On The Milky Way by OMD please 🙏.
The video is certainly if not the best it's one of them. One of my favourites songs. OMD fan and know all of their songs.
lach ned KI-ACH-MED
Listen to Kraftwerk "The Model" The full Dare album by Human League is 💥💯
Speed of light of OMD is also incredible and very wellknown
The video always took so much away from this song to me.
