    FYI: The name 'Shakespeare's Sister' comes from the famous essay by Virginia Woolf where the topic of gender bias is investigated. The literal phrase comes when the author says that if William Shakespeare had a sister with the same talent as he had, then that talent would never be known to the world. As a woman she would not be even allowed to demonstrate her talent, and even if she did she talent would not be recognized as such.

    The first woman is caring for her lover who's on a life support machine, hence her pleading "stay with me". The cruel, crazy, manically laughing woman who then appears represents death coming to take the man away. The two women fight over the man, until finally, and miraculously, he returns to consciousness. Death realises she has been deprived of a victim this time, and so just shrugs it off and retreats. She knows that all mortals have their time, so for her it's just a case of waiting.

      I believe that you are correct, but I see Marcella Detroit as the personification of addiction, and Siobhan Fahey as the angel of death trying to release the man from his demon lover. In the end, the man comes back only to fall into the arms of his addiction once more. Death rolls her eyes as if to say that she’ll be back soon.

  • @xyzdgthereal
    @xyzdgthereal Před 2 lety +37

    Siobhan started Shakespears Sister as a solo project when she felt herself got pushed to the background in Bananarama and also the band has gone into a very commercial pop direction. During the recording of the first album their common songwriter friend recommended the joint work with Marcella (aka Marcy Levy, earlier co-writer-musician of Bob Seger, Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin and Robin Gibb) what became a duo performance after the success of 'You're History'. The third key person here is Jean Guiot aka Dave Stewart of Eurythmics who was Siobhan's husband at that time. The first album was closer the '80s new wave pop sound thanks to the fresh mood of Siobhan though the "silent movie look" advanced the gothic style of the 2nd album (with this song) inspired by experience of life and death (their pregnancies, death of close persons) and the '50s cult sci-fi B-movie 'Cat-Women on the Moon'.
    This video was one of the really great moments of MTV of those days. I couldn't decide I'm in love with Siobhan or I wanna be like her 😊 And of course I always tried to sing the highs of Marcy (the big childhood challenge next to the voice of Freddie Mercury, Bruce Dickinson and 'Die Hölle Räche' of The Queen of Night 😄)

    This came out when I was 7 years old.
    I know that the lady on the stairs is representing death and our “main girl” is fighting her off to save him, but as a 7 year old girl I didn’t understand that metaphor, so to me This was the ultimate fairytale! The Princess had to save the Prince from the wicked witch and I loved it so much. Still do. I had the pleasure of showing my little sister and my daughter and they fell inlove with it as well. 😻 Shakespears Sister is also an amazing name for someone as poetical as these girls. So glad you liked this song. Will always be one of my favourites.

    Oh dear, confession time: I was OBSESSED with this song and its video when it came out In 1992, so I can tell you a few things about it:
    1. The song reached No. 1 in the UK singles chart and stayed there for eight consecutive weeks, a feat that has not been equalled or surpassed by a female band since. To be honest, it topped the charts for so long that, by the time that it was pushed off the top spot by another song, I think that we were all (secretly) a little relieved. 😓
    2. I absolutely LOVED Siobhán Fahey’s performance in the video as the ‘Angel of Death’ - and so was a little disappointed to discover, years later, that she had allegedly been totally drunk whilst performing (having allegedly downed an entire bottle of vodka whilst waiting around on set to perform). Oh dear, and here was I thinking that all that fantastic ‘witchiness’ had been entirely down to pure talent (but I still love ya, Siobhán!). Whatever, Siobhán’s sublime ‘witchiness’ on camera here has, in my view, never been surpassed - before or since! 👏
    3. The video was banned in Germany for - believe it or not - inciting witchcraft. 🧙‍♀️🪄🐈‍⬛👻 I’m not joking. Remember that we’re talking 1992 here, not 1492. The banning in Germany is all the more ironic given that the director of the video, Sophie Müller (who was a friend of the band), is German. 🇩🇪 😀

    So glad you enjoyed the song. It’s amazing! Siobhan is not the one with short hair, she’s the one with long hair playing the Angel of Death. Siobhan was one of the original members of Bananarama and you also read the song writing credits which include Dave Stewart (Eurythmics). He and Siobhan were married in 1987 and were still together when this song was written, divorcing in 1996.

    I was 19 when this was released .. It still sounds amazing!! Siobhan Fahey and Dave Stewart were married at the time of Shakespeare Sister.
    There were so many AMAZING girl groups in the 90's. I believe Shakespeare Sister took their name from an essay written by Virginia Woolf called titled'Shakespeare's Sister' in her book 'A Room of Ones Own'. Written from the perspective that if Shakespeare had a sister as talented as he, would she have been as celebrated and free to write/perform as her brother William Shakespeare.

    The first singer was Marcella Detroit, the second was Siobhan Fahey ( Sha-vohn Fahr-hee, Irish name). SS was Siobhan's post Bananarama project and Marcella was originally a "hired hand" in recording before they decided she should join and make it a duo. Siobhan named the project Shakespears Sister after the Smiths song Shakespeare's Sister, which in turn was a Virginia Woolf reference 🙂

    Thank you for doing this video. I’m slightly deaf, and your gestures and notations really helped me to pick out the instruments more. I remember the Patrick Nagel art posters that depicted that high contrast black hair, white face on women. So it reminded so much of that and the girls in Robert Palmer’s videos. I felt the style was outdated, as we were already seeing grunge, metal, and hip-hop, etc. breaking the airwaves. This video still freaks me out to this day!
