  • In this video I show many of the steps that I took in assembling the 15 Watt Stewart-Macdonald Tweed Amplifier Kit. I purchased this kit for the enjoyment of building it and wanted to share the experience with you, the viewer. I am impressed with the kit and recommend it anyone thinking about building one. I also have some bonus content of a bow rehair because I assembled this kit around my regular work and bow rehair is cool. The only issues that I had with the kit are discussed in the video. I recommend it highly.

    I'm ordering my 5E3 kit parts for my next amp build. I built my first one with the blackface Deluxe Reverb kit, and thoroughly enjoyed it and am very happy with it. Didn't realize it was one of the tougher builds until I was halfway through it. All in all, I probably should have started with the 5E3 , but im getting there. I truly believe these kits are the way to go if you're really wanting that original true tube sound, plus you know exactly how it went together so repairing should be easier than with a mass produced PCB design.

    Plug the speaker in 4 you switch power on, easy to forget but it's the basic stuff that trips us all up. Great jib by the way, sounds nice and rounded. Thanks for reminding us to triple check ever wire. We never stop learning. Credit for sticking it out to end , the reward is obvious, a wickey good sound!!

      He was doing basic testing and if you look, he didn't have the valves in at that point so there was nothing coming though to drive the output transformer and speaker. Good advice for day to day use though, well pointed out.

    Looks a lot like a Rickenbacker M-14 amp. I recently traded a friend for the Ric amp (dated 1959). Tubes were great, but needed all new caps. Sounds great & yours sounds fab!

    I had the same issue with mounting the speaker. I agree with everything you said. Overall a really fun build, and I have limited soldering skills. The amp works great.

    Very fun!!! Now play cinnamon girl! I think that amp is sourced from mojotone. Probably a good idea to give the cab a couple of coats of polyurethane.they came from fender shellaced!

    You need to jump the channels to use them both simultaneously.

      That's what I thought but I swear even with just jack plugged in the 2 vol alters the sound?

    If it was flawless, it wouldn't be Rock N Roll. LOL All kidding aside, Nice build. Waiting on all my parts to arrive to get 5e3 built. Did a Blackface DR a few years back and countless plexi's over the years but the combos are the latest kick for me. I think Alnico speakers are the way to go myself but of course tone is subjective. Well done.

    The fire department found the skeleton of a guy who had a guitar hooked up to an amp he had built. Serious stuff.

      It isn't really "he had built", if it is a kit. My dad built his own kit stereo amp, tuner, and speakers, and while the components didn't last for ever the speaker were still going 50 years later when they were carted to the dump. Heathkit, with Tanoy speakers.

    Don't run your amp without a load on the output! 15:00

      @Stephenmboone  Před 3 lety +1

      I did not. At that point of the very specific step by step instructions not all of the tubes were in place. You are indeed correct about not powering an amp without a load.

    • @Stephenmboone

      I would not without a real good reason and without completely understanding the power consumption and output of the different tubes. Check Rob Robinette's website about these subjects as well as lots of other things.
