  • Influenced by my friend and Patron Rui Grilo, who has a Tweed Champ that he built, I decided to make one for my self too.
But I wanted something i could use live, so the 5e3 Made a lot more sense.
With the pandemic I learned how to solder and I love it a lot. I've been rewiring my guitars, making my own cables and patch cables, and it's a very relating activity while also being productive.

Greatest amp design ever. So many tones possible with that little box, with all those interactive controls.

Congratulations Mr Guedes on completing the build successfully. I am going to offer a critique of what I saw here though and I hope you can take it in the spirit it is intended.
I am very concerned by the process you show after first switching on the amp and getting no sound. You were informed that one of your filter caps was reversed and you point this out by sticking your fingers in the chassis and appearing to touch the bare legs of the capacitors. Buried deep in the comments here, you mentioned that you took all safety precautions but in the video the process appears as you a) switch it on b) switch it off and c) go handling the components inside the chassis without any intervening safety measures. The filter capacitors you were talking about can each store a charge of 400+ volts and they can hold that charge for months awaiting a lightning fast discharge when you put fleshy parts between it and ground.
The proper procedure for going into an amp after it has been switched on for any length of time, is to properly discharge the caps using a snuffer stick basically a resistor in line with ground - readers will have to look up snuffer stick - I have bigger fish to fry here! Some amps have bleed resistors built into the power circuit so that after 10 minutes or so they can be said to be safe but the original 5E3 Deluxe didn't have them and there is no guarantee that any of the kits based on the 5E3 have them either. Best to err on the side of caution and assume not. After, you have bled the capacitors you absolutely must confirm the there is no voltage left in the caps. You understand, you didn't mention any of this and you have to assume that the regular viewer who is building this amp for the first time may look to you for instruction here. You don't want to be the content creator whose instruction led to a fatality.
Building amps can be a fun and safe hobby and no more dangerous than driving down the road with cars on the other side coming in your direction. But only if you are absolutely clear about the fact that SAFETY is not optional. And think of who your audience is here...

Congratulations. That's the right tones! A year later, I hope you are still enjoying the magic of the Tweed Deluxe. My session player buddy told me to play through the Mic channel before it breaks up (under 3!) and use the GUITAR's volume knob as a dirt/clean knob for a project I was on. It worked great. I used the interactive volume trick pluged into the Instrument (bright) channel and got the most wonderful clean sounds.. but I just love the mids and the dirt of the Inst. channel turned up to 4 or 5 and the tone way up. Then clean up with the guitar volume (mine has a high pass filter) and the tones are so rock n roll!!

Congrats on finishing a great amp! I went that road too a few monts ago with a chinese kit and I also tried a few mods. Beside an fx loop insert into the circuit (you can find online several options) I think the best mod (for me) was an master volume inserted between the preamp and power amp stage (just before the phase inveter). It enables more control over the preamp tubes distorsion and the power tubes overall volume making it way more usable at lower volumes. Either way I think this circuit has very nice middy tones, excelent dynamic response and with a distorsion/overdrive pedal in front of it gets you very nice high gain sweetness :)

Great project - that's a lot of work though . . gotta tell people there's some high voltages in valve amps. Top tips - wear rubber-soled shoes, and if you must poke or touch anything inside when it's on, use ONE hand and something non-conductive like a wooden ice-cream stick, don't use a screwdriver!

The Alnico Jensen is great after a few hours of break in.
After 20 something years, I finally decided to give Italian Jensen's a chance. They are much, much better speakers than people seem to think. They're just not modern, like everything else.

yep . i like the jensen speakers too ( and also eminence btw ) , i have an fender tonemaster dr now wich has the jensen neodymium speaker ( from wich people say it has an alnico kind of sound ) and i'm happy with the sound , i have this amp for 3 years now and will never sell it , it's a great amp ( and i even have not done the firmware upgrade ) . Some 10 years ago i had the fender eric clapton tremolux amp ( also a tweed deluxe kind off amp ) , it had an celestion rola speaker ( the G12H ? ) , it took a while before the speaker was broken in , but man , did that amp sound great ( but me beeing an stupid asshole , i sold the amp because i wanted more clean headroom ) , i regret that deciscion until this day : ) , but yeah , like i said i'm happy with my tonemaster dr now , no fidling around with tubes and bias anymore and it alway's sounds the same whatever the voltage is in the clubs i play ,so i don't need an brown box to regulate the voltage for my tubeamp anymore .

i have read on many forums that the experts consider the weber 12A125S as the best sounding modern speaker for an 5E3 amp , it's an alnico 30 watt speaker so it not an high headroom speaker though but i had one in my Marble LTD amp ( upgraded 5E3 clone ) and it did sound great .

    • @matthewf1979
      @matthewf1979 Před 2 lety +1

Are you sure about that model number? The 12A125A seems to be the favorite on the forums I frequent. I have the "A" and "S" versions and both are appropriate for Tweed or Brown Fender's.
The Jensen P12R isn't a bad speaker, it needs time to break in though.
My favorite 5E3 speaker is from Weber and the "Tweed Deluxe Speed Shop" - A12Q. 20 watt, no dope, special pulp cone, voice coil. former and dust cap.

@@matthewf1979 hello , i just had a look on the weber site , and i from what i read in the comments the "A " version is indeed also beeing used a lot for 5E3 circuit type off amps , so yeah , i guess there both great for these kind off amps , i had the " S "version in my amp and like i said it sounded great . It's about preference i guess , all kind off speakers are beeing used in these kind off amps from what i notice after reading many forum comments . The jensen speaker is for sure not a "bad "speaker , but i think anyway's an alnico speaker will give you a somewhat more "vintage " vibe kind off sound instead off an ceramic speaker . But can you tell me how much having a dope or not will affect the sound ?

Amp builder here - I would say it depends on how well you can follow instructions and have attention to detail. There are lots of great detailed guides and kits on building a 5E3 that could guide a beginner well enough through.
If you have doubts I would recommend starting by replacing pickups in a guitar or building a few pedals from a kit. That will help you learn how to solder well and how to follow a kit. If you can build a pedal, you can build an amp.
Amps intimidate some because they're potentially dangerous. It is good to be aware of the risks. But also consider that driving a car is risky. That's why you do driver's education first. Study the process and educate yourself and you can greatly minimize the risks.
Building your own amp can be incredibly rewarding and a great learning experience. I play my first 5E3 all the time and cherish it greatly though it doesn't really have much market value.

@@KleyDeJong Thanks for taking the time to craft such a thoughtful reply. I’ve long been interested in electronics, wiring my guitars and pickups, building simple circuit devices and studying the basics of current flow. I’m well versed with a soldering iron but you’re 100% correct- tube amps are very intimidating, only partly because of high voltage (I have confidence that I can follow safety protocol) but more because of complexity. I may well take your excellent advice and build a simple low wattage practice amp kit first... and my cabinet building skills will be big bonus for completing a small combo! Thanks again.
