    Wish this video had come out three months ago... I had to have my transmissions replaced for the top. That was EX-PEN-SIVE! That's when I decided to start doing my own maintenance. So keep putting out the videos. BTW do you take requests? 😁

    Thanks for the video, Aaron. I couldn't have repaired my 987.1S without your help. For anyone who is interested, the 987.1S in nearly an identical process except that instead of removing the oval bugeye lenses in the 986 you need to remove the HomeLink gagage door opener switches to get to the torx screws. A word to the wise, you need to remove the entire HomeLink switch, not just the bezel around the switch. (I learned this the hard way on the first switch. Re-assemply was a PITA). There is a small notch on the frontside edge of the switch closet to the window. Use a small screwdriver to get under the notch to release the front of the switch first before pulling on the switch to remove. The rest of the process is identical to video. I purchased new little clips to hold the switch in place, but for the life of me I couldn't get them to slip over the little pins. I ended up reusing the original clips.

      Hey thanks for this comment, I was trying to figure out how to deal with the homelink on my 987.1.
      What were you experiencing with your top? Mine is stuck down/open and the car basically thinks it doesn’t exist.

    On a 987 - the bolts are T-30. The T25 will obviously fit in, and sort of catch the T30 recess, but repeated use of the smaller Torx driver WILL bugger out the Torx recess in the bolts.

    Great Video Aaron! At the moment I have the microswitch cleaned up and ready to go. PROBLEM: When I plug in the microswitch to the connector is does not function UNLESS I am holding the firmly the connector into the microswitch. The connection seems ok but I have to be pushing the plug into the microswitch to get it to function. Any Suggestions??

    My top/clamshell just recently got stuck and was making the crunchy sound before becoming completely immobile too. I think the motor on my left seized. clamshell was also uneven when trying to go down it was lower on the right.

      @HelpMeDIY  Před 2 lety +1

      +Naomi H there is only one motor and it’s in the middle. I’m actually making a video on that right now, stay tuned. My guess is the plastic ball at the end of the rod broke like mine or that the plastic gear inside the “transmission” broke.

      @@HelpMeDIY Great! Hoping u find the issue. My mistake, yes one motor but i think the gear on the drivers side is seized. I removed both ball attachments that connect to the roof and hinges to manually open/close the top and i noticed the drivers side clamshell doesn't want to sit fully close. It's raised slightly but can sit flush if slight force is applied.

    It is not the micro switch but the pins that hold it is the problem. When you remove it, it is very hard to put them back as in before and there is usually a little play in the switch. That causes the top to work in my experience.
    I solved it by glueing with plastic epoxy.

    • @HelpMeDIY

      +Anil I need to check, but I bet you can buy new “pins” (or whatever Porsche calls them). Mine were still tight.

      @@HelpMeDIY Please let us know. Thanks for the videos btw. I solved my convertible top problem by watching your videos. I also bend couple pins on the relay and grounded one of them so that I can use the top while driving and handbrake is down. This also prevents future problems that might arrive when handbrake switch doesn't work.

    Hi, I have a 996 with the same latch system, after I had the soft top replaced it takes the latch hook like three tries to get close enough to the closed position. Deploys, retracts, advances again and does the same thing until it can finally close. Do you know what deploys the hook?

    • @HelpMeDIY
      @HelpMeDIY  Před rokem

      +Martin Espinosa for mine it was my hand that deploys it, so maybe you have another switch? Not sure, sorry. Let us know if you figure it out!

      I’m missing the steps here… why did you replace the relay? After replacing it is when the top up switch stopped working? From your short description it sounds like it’s obviously a bad relay, but I’m guessing I didn’t get the full background and picture here.
