Installing my old Cyclone Rake on my new John Deere x590. If you are only interested in seeing the Cyclone Rake in use, skip to 26:00. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
March 2022 and this is still a helpful video as I am getting ready to install and rehab an older rack that the previous owners have not cared for very well. Thank you!
Thanks! Good luck to you!
Thanks for this video! I made use of your tips to do the same transformation of my MDA to an X390 48" Accel Deep deck. I used hand tools to minimize the possibility of removing too much material and get the best fit. Due to numerous configurations at the discharge of the JD decks and changes to the MDA design/attachment plates, I did need to buy the new model plate to eliminate drilling into the deck to use the old one. Dense foam swimming noodle material is really good for filling any gaps.
Like you said, there was satisfaction in making the old MDA useful.
Pool noodles... good idea! I have a gap that would work nicely in. Glad the video helped and thanks for the idea!
You did a fantastic job modifying your equipment! You did an even better job demonstrating all the hard and easy parts of the process. Ty!
Thank you! I am both amazed and ashamed to say that the "short term" gorilla tape extension has been in place for 7 years now with no repair! Granted it only sees a few hours of use a year, but still. Gorilla tape is serious stuff. 😄😄
It’s amazing how well those things work
Yes, they are a bit of work to install, but they do work well!
Seems like a lot of work to use this thing. I also have a X590. I am just using a sweeper with mine. It pivots on the hole in the plate on the tractor, and I don't have any issues with it swinging wide when turning. I also don't have to get off the tractor to dump my load. It has a pull string to dump. No motor, no gas and no extra noise with it. It does a great job for me. My sweeper also has a dethatcher on it. This thing really make keeping up with the yard easy. Love this new model JD.
I have a few other accessories for it. 30" mechanical tiller and a 500lb (loaded) plug aerator. Arm rest, brush guard and mulch kit. I have added rear LED running lights to mine. There is a guy on here with a video showing his LEDS. They are installed in the rear reflectors and look OEM installed.
+Ralph L No question, there is some extra work compared to just hooking up a sweeper. I had a sweeper before buying the cyclone. The sweeper did OK, but it would fill up pretty quickly. I ended up spending about as much time running over to dump it as I did actually sweeping. Now, I only have to empty the cyclone once or twice. So, for me anyway, the actual time to clear the yard is significantly lower, but it takes longer to setup and tear down the cyclone, thus making the total time about equal. One additional benefit I get is that my leaf pile is smaller and more readily "compostable" as the leaves have been mulched by both the mower blades and the cyclone's impeller.
I am loving the x590. Looks like we will be getting a final snow storm this weekend and then it will be time to remove the snow thrower and get ready for mowing season.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
You did a good job explaining everything, thank u!
Great video!! I'm looking to get the CR Commercial Pro soon and your video answered a lot of my questions I had, thanks!
+Steve G. Glad it helped and thanks for the compliment!
Very informative video . You show just about everything that one needs . Thanks so much .
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful.
THANK YOU for the very informative video!! I will be purchasing one soon!! 👍😃
Thanks for the compliment! Enjoy the new equipment!
That's an awesome tractor. I use a GT235 and a 44 bushel trac vac. Seems easier to hook up than that, but that cyclone is a major space saver. My trac vac takes up a ton of room and it's nowhere near as maneuverable as that. Awesome video. Good luck with that 590
Thanks! It does the job, but it is a bit of work to hook up. Fortunately it is seasonal, so it's not like I'm dealing with it every weekend. I use it twice in the fall and once in the spring, so it's not so bad.
From experience those will s snap over time . That is why I used 5/8 th hillman bolts you will never have a problem . Great video 👍🏻 I used my John Deere L -120 for many years with the same model cyclone rake you have .
Took care of 5 lawns every season. Enjoy .
Sorry, which part will snap? Thanks for the compliment!
@@DavinDesborough the bolts to the hitch from moving side to side .
that thing is just cute how it follows the mower
I guess the Cyclone rake is a good product but..... I made my own leaf collection system out of my little dump trailer, by putting sides an a "breathable" top on it. Bought a piece of flexible Hose ( the most expensive part ! ) to go from my bagger deck pipe to the trailer. Wish I had taken pictures of it to show. Worked like a CHAMP !! Whole thing cost me about $150. Just trying to give a few "do it yourselfer" people an idea. I made it with a door on the back to be able to dump the debris from the yard. I couldn't always blow wet leaves obviously, but that never posed a problem for me, I worked when it was dry. The high lift blades that came stock on my Craftsman 24hp 48"cut did the job beautifully, and when I tell you I had leaves, I HAD LEAVES. I lived at the base of a Mountain in Ct. I know the Cyclone Rake is a little pricey and I'm a cheap sucker with a few good ideas !! LOL ! I hope this can help someone out. I actually tried to patent my little invention through Davidson, they tried to steal my idea so I said forget it. I gave my unit to my neighbor when I left Ct. I enjoyed using it so much I did 3 peoples yards. He STILL loves it !!
When I purchased it, it was somewhat unique and I didn't have a cart or anything else to use as a base. Now there are more options, even doing it yourself. Sounds like yours worked really well. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent and thorough video.
Thank you!
I've had my Cyclone 20 years or so, Just dang near wore it out , New bag few years ago and new engine this year(2019). Cyclone Service department has been really good , I do think they could of done me better on the new motor. I have mine hooked up to a JD 455 , I say Your 590 will do a great job with it.
It has been really low maintenance for me too. Nothing to repair, just change the oil and such and you are good to go!
Great video. Thanks for sharing
+Rick Gelhart Thanks for the compliment and for watching.
I always thought your bubble was off center!!!! Lol 😂
That was a free Harbor Freight level, you get what you pay for! 😁
Thanks! Wonderful video.
Thank you!
sure you can build one but you need to buy the gas powered vacum, to really suck up all the needles stones butts, and unseeing just the hose to clean up corners and under decks, the mower deck plugs up with crap with out it as it cant blow large a mount of leaves at a time with out it, sure the deck will blow a lightly spread yard and i do mean lightly, it is the vacum unit that cost the most
Its Down rite cute how it follows The mower so well
love my cyclone rake!!
Yeah, It is a time saver. Thanks for watching and commenting!
i like the fixed trailor idea easy to go backwards
It does make reversing easy, but the down side is the tail swing when you turn. If you are trying to navigate a tight inside turn near some trees, for example, you can't go all the way in or the trailer will swing out and hit the trees. You just need to be aware of your surroundings. Thanks for watching!
I put a multch kit on my Cub and after going over once I raise deck and blow clippings all aver the place. When I'm done no leafs anywhere. No leafs to get rid of either. It's done wonders for my lawn too.
+Isalandman 6285 I mulch most of the year, but there are just too many leaves to mulch them in the fall. That and I have a lot of pine trees, so I like to vacuum up the pine needles. Mulching doesn't touch them. Thanks for watching and commenting!
It does a very nice job....don't forget to oil them hinges!
Will do! :-)
Great video!
This comment slipped by somehow. Thanks for the compliment!
Can't help you with the pine needles but my leaves are about 6 inches deep over the whole lawn. This happens about twice to three times a fall season. Mulching alone won't do the job. But, raising the deck after the mulching and letting the blades blow the cut leaves works great. Sometimes I go over twice but it's at a fast pace.
great video thank you
Thanks for the compliment!
Davin Desborough I might be a bit late to the party, but I should mention to you something about those X5 series (I have a X530), if you begin to notice the machine's top speed feels far less than when it was new, or there no power in reverse, replace the plastic pedal bushings (part # M152776), and adjust pedals to be all the way up when attaching the foot pedal to the linkage. Parts are $10 from a Deere dealership, and it works wonders!
MrPizzapuppy thanks for the tip! That is great information. I've had no issues thus far, but will keep this filled away for the future.
I have an X530 also and my reverse has been slow/sluggish... part number copied and preparing to order! THanks
That is a heck of a leaf vac. Im jealous of your leaves though..if you mulch those instead of picking them up it would add natural nutrients to your lawn.
I mulch throughout the year, but there are just too many leaves and pine needles to leave them on the lawn. I fill that 2 -3 times when cleaning in the height of fall. Thanks for watching!
I just purchased my material collection system for my x380 54in deck everything fits right up no need to modify...
nice job
Michael Cooke III - Thank you!
Looks like a dam good vacuum aint no cheap ass harbor freight shit bad ass cyclone rake
It is held up well over the years. It is somewhat a chore to setup and take down, but it is way faster than raking! Thanks for watching.
You have a better presentation, then DR cyclone company !!!
Hah! Thanks for the compliment!
Nice job☺
Thank you!
Thank you!
thats one bad bitch I Love how it chips The leaves so theres room for more leaves
Quite the informative video - well done. Thanks, cool dude.
WOW, you really hacked that boot half to death. Should of just called Cyclone Rake and ordered the proper boot for your new deck!
+Kevin Poland Why buy when you can use power tools! :-) When I get around to buying a longer hose, I might buy a new boot if they have one specific to my deck. Thanks for watching and commenting!
this guy is a total idiot. it is called John Deere has their own brand Trac vacs. So they don't offer nothing through Cyclone Rake. As John Deere makes their own decks too. They are not like MTD who buys decks through a company. The same company who makes decks for Poulan and AYP and Craftsman.
@@williamajthompson9166 the deck boot from Cyclone will need to be customized in any case, they don't come specfic to any mower deck.
Maybe he wanted the Cyclone not the John Deere vac.
Plenty of people use Cyclone Rakes with John Deere Mowers or Tractors.
Meant to say, Swap out the regular blades for a set of mulching blades. They really help...
Yep, I run mulching blades all the time!
Thank you!
You are welcome. I hope it helps!
i contacted the mfg a few years ago about buying one, but they had no dealer in north western Ont. Canada, i asked them about being a dealer here for them, but all they were interested in was pushing me to buy one witch i would have if they had a dealer here but still they just kept pushing to sell me, i told them like many others here that would like one, if there is no dealer support and our summers are short, with out a dealer owners would be down for the better part of what summer was left before snow hit use, like how it go with so meany other things, parts coming from the USA takes weeks and longer if they get held up at customs, but they had no interest other then pushing a sale, no after sale support local.
I am not too far from their headquarters, but fortunately I have never needed support. They seem to use good parts. That was an unfortunate experience for you. I totally get your point of view though. Thanks for watching and enjoy your brief respite from snow!
Looks to me like it's not doing a very good job of picking up everything. Since you did remove the mulching baffle earlier, I'm assuming you have mulching blades installed? If I'm not mistaken, it's recommended to use "High-Lift" blades when using this system. That certainly will make a big difference on the effectiveness of cleaning.
A dump cart vac is much easier to install and unload. Also the vacuume and engine are permanently mounted to the dump carts drawbar. Just hitch the cart and connect the hose to the mower and your all set.
+ROBERT PRESTI I have had this for a few years and when I purchased it, there weren't many options around. If I were buying a unit today, I might go that route. That said, this hangs on the wall of my garage, so it takes up very little space to store. That is a nice feature that offsets the extra effort to get it setup. Thanks for watching and commenting!
edge a few months back on my
Should really consider putting a small wheeled jack on the front of that that way u can leave it all together an just unhitch it like a trailer
The cyclone rake folks offer that as an option, but I don't have room to store it assembled. I hang it on the wall. Thanks for watching!
Thanks Davin. Very informative. Does the impeller help suck leaves and debris off the ground? Or does it only pull the leaves through the tube once they're outside of the mower ? Thanks.
Yes it does suck debris off ground, but your mower blades help by lifting wet and embedded material off the ground.
Sorry for the late response. As Wayne mentioned, you mower blades help lift everything off the ground. There is absolutely a vacuum effect under the deck, but it works far better with the blades spinning. The impeller also helps to further mulch what is sucked in.
Thanks for posting your experience with the transition! I have the Cyclone rake commander on my old Cub LT1045 and just picked up an X580 yesterday and was wondering about the ability to reuse the CR components for the X580. Did you try "Unscrewing" the plastic ends from each end of the hose to make it longer? Either way, glad to know I can get by for this fall if needed.
The gap was bigger than any slack I could have achieved through unthreading. I made that video 7 years ago. The Gorilla tape and wire "temporary fix" is still going strong. No repairs needed. Gorilla tape is great. 😁
Just a note- be mindful the screw handles that hold the motor and vac head to the frame will vibrate loose and fall out. I lost two before drilling small hole in shaft for a hairpin clip.
@@zackwhatley6449 Thanks for the tip. I have not had an issue with them loosening up, but that is a good idea regardless!
Screw the cyclone rake, let's talk about that beautiful Deere
I have same JD Tractor. Great machine. Where did you get the steel plate for the hitch ball? Custom made?
It is the "hitch plate" for the cyclone rake. The two outer holes are where the trailer for the rake hook up. I decided to put a hitch ball in the middle hole to tow my trailer around the yard.
Thanks for watching!
Здравствуйте. Для трубы Циклона рэйк нужно переходник изготовить и не надо было резать оригинальную трубу
Thank you for making this video. I have a 2016 x590, and Cyclone is offering their *20th Anniversary Edition* unit for sale right now, and I am itching to pull the trigger on it~! One concern I do have is as I have 1.6 acres of lawn, can it handle a full bag of spring green grass, even if fairly dry? It would still be quite heavy? Or, would it kill the Cyclone Rake?
I don't use it for grass, but it will handle a lot of weight. I fill the bag with pine needles and leaves. Be sure to stay on level ground when it starts getting full as the weight of the cart can really fight your steering if you are crossing a slope. I have the double wheels to spread the weight a bit more and keep it from sinking into soft ground.
I have never had the rake bog down. The only issue I have is that the top mesh will sometimes get blocked by leaves. I think this is something they have improved since I purchased mine long ago. Thanks for watching!
My understand is they (the company) is trying to grow/improve on an ongoing basis so hopefully yes, this year's model would be an improved version overall. But like most things, it may not last quite as long as some of the older models either. All I know is I am hoping this is the year I finally get mine!
AWESOME TRACTOR! but just a simple mulch cover will save u a couple thousand and many hours or work/disposal, just hoping to lend a helping hand!
Thanks for trying to help! I do mulch most of the year, but I simply get too many leaves and pine needles during the fall to mulch it all. What you saw on the ground in this video was just the tip of the iceberg for me. Thanks again!
Davin Desborough
Was the Cyclone Rake you originally purchased set up specifically for the Yard Man or did you have to adapt the Cyclone Rake to that machine as well? Seems like a lot of work to move the Rake from Yard Man to John Deere. Great video though.
No. You have to cut an appropriate hole in the MDA (the part I was cutting up further) when you get it. You also cut the hose to length. They have different MDAs for different tractors. If I were buying new, they probably would have sent one that fit the x590 better. But, since I had power tools and some time, I made what I had work.
Thanks for the compliment!
I'm thinking of inventing a homemade leaf vacuum trailer cart powered by a harley davidson motorcycle engine
That will take the whole yard, grass and all! 🙂 Good luck!
What is the sizes of the holes on the two meshes to block the leaf on top. Which size on grass works better for you.
I use the larger of the two sizes, but I can't really say how big the holes are. I currently have it stored as I have finished the cleanup for the year. I imagine the smaller size might work well for grass. I only use it for leaf cleanup. Thanks for watching!
Im still using the same mtd yardman thats in your video but want to upgrade to a x570 or x584. Are the x500’s much larger? Im 6’3” and its a tight fit on the mtd.
Yes, the x500 is a larger frame and there is a good bit of room. I am 6'3" as well and have no issues with it, even in the winter when I am jumping into the cab with full snow gear on (see my other videos to check that out). It is so much nicer than the Yardman (as one would expect). Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any other questions.
I have a x590 purchase of a snowblower vs. straight blade plow?! Have you any comments or advice between the 2 mode of moving snow!? Toronto Canada snow is sporadic and moderate not as severe as Buffalo!!
The big decider for me is that I have a 300' driveway. Trying to push snow that far isn't going to work, which would mean lots of pushing off the side of the driveway, which will take a lot longer. With the blower, 4 straight trips up and down the driveway and it's done. Does not take long at all. It also is much better than a blade would be in really wet snow. If you have a reasonable driveway and the snow is mostly light and not deep, a blade is fine. If you get deep, wet snow like we do, I would say blower all the way. There is also the fact that I will never run out of room to push snow as the blower takes it up and over any snow bank.
Let me know if you have other questions. Good luck this winter!
Screens - large size for doing leaves, small size for doing grass... does that make sense?
Yes, I get that, but I never had anything but trouble with the small size. Even where there weren't a lot of leaves on the lawn.
It looks like it leaves behind a lot of material. I wonder if a sweeper would pick that up.
It is certainly not 100%, but it generally gets at least 95% of what is on the lawn. In this video I had the deck a little high. If I had dropped it down another 1/2 inch, I would have been collecting much of what you saw left behind.
I like to leave my deck at its highest setting so that the grass has more surface area to absorb sunlight. I've been trying different ways to deal with leaves this year. I bought a bagger and then a lawn vacuum. The lawn vacuum picks up almost everything but it only clears a 24" path. I'm thinking about trying a sweeper. Have you tried a bagger on your tractor before? I was wondering how it compares to using the Cyclone Rake. I'm thinking about putting a blower between the deck and the bagger, similar to the Cyclone Rake setup but I'm wondering how much it will boost performance.
with The motor turning The fan that fast Its really goin to suk up anything that fan Is hauling ass I have to get one soon
How well did the smaller mower pull the lawn rake
Just fine. I used it for several seasons. It does not take too much to pull it unless you have some steep hills.
you need to oil the hinges on that bagger!
I might consider that if the hinges actually were used frequently. As it is, they are folded and unfolded about four times a year. My fear is that oil or grease would just attract all the dust and dirt and make things even worse.
In any case, thanks for watching and commenting!
Almost 500 likes ;)
Yep, getting close! Thanks for watching!
On my Cyclone Rake I don’t need to use the outside clips to hold the flaps shut. The Velcro is strong enough.
Yeah, the Velcro is really strong, even when it gets full of debris. I noticed this fall that the stitching on my Velcro is coming loose at one point, so I will need to sew that back on before it gets to be a problem. Thanks for watching!
What mulch cover are you using?
The mulching plug on the JD Deck? I think it is part number M131094. It is what came pre-installed as I ordered the deck with the mulching kit. I removed the spring loaded chute from the deck and removed the support arm that is installed in the plastic. That allows me to exit easily from either side of the tractor.
That hill test was that with it full kr empty?
It was about 1/2 full at that point. I have run that hill with a full load and while you feel it, it still has the power to move it without much trouble.
Purchasing an X580 series John Deere, approximately how much did you pay for your mulching baffle? At that time
I honestly don't remember. It was about 7 years ago and all rolled up into a package purchase. Looking around now, I am seeing prices of $200 for a real one and about $100 for an aftermarket one (3rd party part). Part number M131094
Its a bit like a cotton picker xcept Its pickin up The leaves
about how much does a cyclone rake like that cost? I would be interested in such a product possibly
Here is the product page: www.cyclonerake.com/cyclone-rake-xl-leaf-and-lawn-vacuum/
Not cheap, but it makes yard cleanup easier.
Looks like it sucks the leaves up way better when you drive in circles than when ya drive in a straight line. Wonder why that is?
Probably because I was overlapping more when I was spinning around. Anyway, thanks for watching and commenting!
Excuse my ignorance but to the cutters have to be engaged ?
I believe you are asking if the blades need to be engaged while using the Cyclone Rake? If so, then the answer is yes. The mower blades do the initial cutting and help lift material off the ground to be vacuumed up.
Do you know if this will block the x590 sleeve hitch? Or if we can just use the sleeve hitch instead?
I have never seen the sleeve hitch mounted on a x590, so I don't know. The leaf vac is a two point connection, so I don't see how you could safely hook it up to a sleeve hitch. I think it would put too much side to side torque on the hitch. The mount is two bolts that are easy to remove seasonally. I have to take the mount off to install the plate weights in the winter.
thanks for the info- yeah, if I pull the trigger I'll just have to suck it up and take the sleeve off

what r you going to do with the other mower
The old mower perhaps didn't look it, but it is beat up and needed replacement. Every time I took it out to mow, I had to fix something on it. I still have it as I keep thinking I might do something with it. Change the gearing and turn it into a drag mower or something :-)
Guy get the Jack stand and the power lifter leave it set up .
Does it pick up nuts? (i've got acorns and hickory nuts)
It will pick up some acorns, it just depends how low you mow and how embedded they are in the lawn. I have a lot of acorns myself. It helps, but it's not going to make your lawn acorn free.
Davin Desborough Thanks. Those little nuts get everywhere! Wish there was a better solution!
Why not just mulch the grass and leaves?
I do much most of the year. In the fall, I have way too many leaves, pine needles, and pine cones to mulch. Thanks for watching!
How much for your old one
It is already gone. Sorry! Thanks for watching!
Do u have to take it apart
Sorry, not sure what you are asking. Do you have to take apart what?
Davin Desborough the trailer do u have to take it apart or can you leave it built
You can leave it assembled if you have the space. I hang it on a wall, so it gets taken apart after use. Thanks for watching!
Wow! Shell out the bucks for an x590, but hack up and tape your Cyclone Rake to it?
Hey, I had to improvise. You need to cut the deck adapter for your mower anyway. There is probably one for the JD that fits a bit better from the start, but this one works just fine. As for the tape, I needed to use it and I couldn't wait for a new hose. The funny thing? I am still using the taped up connection. I have not had to touch it in 3.5 seasons of use. Gorilla tape is good stuff. :-)
Miley Cyrus putting that blower on like a wrecking ball LOL jk
I am thinking of the tractor like yours, Why did you not leave the mulch kit and try that first? Or did you want to use the cyclone? I see you have the XL version - is that appropriate size for the John Deer XL590? Thanks
+gaewing The reason I use the vacuum is that I have a lot of pine trees and the vacuum helps suck up the pine needles. Just mulching does not touch them. Also, I get a lot of leaves a the peak of fall and it would just be too much to mulch. The x590 is a much bigger tractor than my old yardman, and it handles the XL just fine. It;s been a few years since I have looked at the cyclone rakes, if there is a bigger one, the x590 would probably handle it with ease.
Thanks for watching!
I'd rather have a Honda motor on it for the fan
It's only used a few hours a year, so most any engine would probably last a long time. Thanks for watching!

Can't you just mulch the leaves back into the lawn? My buddy's dad is a farmer and goes on rants about people removing leaves as they fertilize the soil, etc.
I mulch all year. In the fall, however, there are just too many leaves and pine needles. I fill that cart (as in full) about or nine or nine times a season. That is a lot of leaf matter.
Parts for the CYCLON VAC-WAGON are very high . And i don't like the way it hooks up .The one at RURAL KING is better.the swivel traler is bad ,it will hit every thing around you ..
I used to work at Woodland Power Products. The company that makes the cyclone rake. I worked here for over two years. The product I believe was good quality but the atmosphere in that place is hellish. I've seen so may employees get screwed but no one said anything because we all got families to take care of. Ever since they hired a child abuser this establishment went downhill fast. Morale was a constant battle.
I have enjoyed the product, so it is unfortunate to hear the company isn't as nice as the product is. Hopefully things will change for the better. Thanks for commenting.
Michael Corey all I care about is the product. I don’t care about the disgruntled employees of the company. I don’t mean to sound like I don’t have a heart but I don’t have time to fact-Check every little thing someone says about the internal workings of a company. Hope you have a better job now tho.
There is nothing quick about a 37 minute video.
Umm.... thanks for the comment?
There is a lot of information that he took the time to put together, for the benefit of others.
Should just bought the Power Flow for that mower and sold that cyclone
Eh, I already have the Cyclone, so why pay more? I mulch the rest of the year, so I wouldn't use it much. All the same, thanks for commenting.

The blower housing? I've had mine for years with no issue. I did opt for the steel liner though. Best of luck getting that resolved!
