  • Visma Lease A Bike's NEW HELMETS Are Borderline RIDICULOUS
The world of time trials is constantly evolving, and one thing that teams just can’t stop rolling out are the helmets. When it comes to time trial helmets, things have been getting weird for a couple of years now. But the weird has recently reached another level, as the new Visma-Lease-A-Bike helmets that recently got introduced might just take the cake. So here’s everything you need to know about their Alien versus Predator themed headgear.

Good protection, excellent vision, great aerodynamics, what's not to like...

It is as aerodynamically perfect as I have seen, the improved field of vision for the rider is awesome, my only question is the thing is so lightweight, how well is the riders head protected in a huge crash

My biggest concern is with the length extending from the front. Necks do not handle torque very well and I can see the front end of that helmet acting like a "cheater bar" in the event of an accident. Torque is force times distance and multiplying the length of that lever arm to such an extent is going to massively increase the torque a neck sees in anything but a purely head-on impact.

Jumbo is right that they should not be approved at development stage then ban later. However it IS getting out of hand/ridiculous and there should be regulations concerning how far a helmet may stick out front/back/sides/up from your head. Or any shape that does not involve safety/ air flow for just cooling should be questioned. It's a safety thing and it should stay just that.

What is ridiculous is that they aren't using aero fairings on the bikes themselves 🏍️. . ... I am absolutely convinced it would help and not weigh too much. Mythbusters build a bubble motorcycle with a fairly huge drop shaped bubble. They rode it at city speed. Still worked.

Aerodynamic fairings on the bike aren't allowed by the rules

You Americans have a tradition of suing in case of safety failures, so I am sure Giro has safety in mind when they develop helmets including the new aero helmet... personally I don't think the UCI has a case against Visma and the team will proceed using the helmet in the upcoming TdF...

any sport-specific gears can look weird to people outside the box and that's 100% understandable and the thing about cycling is that you are out on the roads mingling with people living their everyday lives... i just try not to fiddle too much with these cycling-specific gears they look atrocious on the roads
