  • TAMAN JURONG MARKET AND FOOD CENTRE - Maybe Singapore's First hawker Centre
Some say it maybe Singapore's first hawker centre at Yung Sheng Road in Jurong. The oldies call it 60 stalls. The new structure here was constructed in 2003. Market on first floor and 2 massive floor space of hawkers above.

Piggypuggy, thanks for being kaypoh so that we can get a close look at each stalls in our beloved hawker centers. It's so nice to go inside and take a look at how they prepare food, the people tending to the stalls etc, every stall you went to makes me wanna go there and try. Thank you!

Great to see you have finally made it out to the wild, wild west Piggy.
As I think I have mentioned to you, I visited Taman Jurong earlier this year. It was a real highlight of my food focused trip to sunny Singapore (Plus art, plus gardens). I really felt that I was in the nations heartland in TJ and far from the madding tourist crowd. This was the first place I took notice of the advice that if you see a line, join it! Nine out of ten times it will be worth it. The line I joined only led to a humble bowl of mee pok, but it brought together so much of what is so great about Singaporean hawker food. Simple low cost food churned out by people who struggle every day to make the dish as well as they can. Lets not forget that this happens in a vibrant multi-cultural environment where people from every ethnic group work beside each other in a good humored environment.
Emphasizing the singularity of the experience, the relatively young female hawker running the stall felt compelled to seek me out after giving me my meal to return 50 cents that I had paid over the odds through a mix up in ordering. There are not many place in the world where that would happen.
Oh, and looking ahead to next February's trip. Do you have any foods tips for a morning's walk from Kent Ridge to Vivo City? Seah Im Food Centre is closed for renovations and Telok Blangah Rise gets only middling reviews

Yeah.. I remembered..I almost felt ashamed that I haven't been to Taman Jurong before you 😂.. I'm now in Penang.. you gotta try this place out.. food here is even more old school and taxis are at a fraction of our cost back home. Singapore is in real danger of losing our hawkers. Problem is we have developed from a 3rd to 1sr world nation in a span of 1-2 generations.. young generations have no compelling reasons to become a hawker. As the hawkers resonated.. no annual leave. No medical benefits.. no bonus.. long and hot gruelling hours in the kitchen.. and customers are still a little unwilling to pay $5 a bowl..
Back then.. being a hawker was just a way of life.. to make a decent living and make ends meet. None of their kids wants to take over this kinda life with inflation sky rocketing past a humble $3 bowl of noodles

Used to stay in the west, but really didn't go to this place much. There is a carpark upstairs, btw. The design is quite bad, a lot of stalls on the outside have little foot traffic. I should give it another visit, I guess. Too bad you've never seen the old hawker centre. It's like going to Malaysia, haha.
Perhaps you can visit Boon Lay Place. That is a slum, but really very crowded, with a lot of popular stalls like Power Nasi Lemak, the prata stall, boneless duck noodles, etc. Cheers.

Wasted you didn’t try the Sarawak laksa … I bought it once & it’s GOOD! Both spicy + flavourful & very diff from the more typical SG style laksa. Now I need to go back & try their kolo mee next time. Despite staying in the west, I don’t come here that often as I need 2 transfers of bus/mrt to get here. My personal fav stalls here will be 58 bar Chor mee (down the row from Lor mee) & Butternut (thin crust halal pizza at level 2 corner - same owner as Ang Mo Zi Char)

The Feng Zhen Lor Mee opened an outlet in Yishun area. Lor mee is good but there's a price difference of additional 50 cts in Yishun. Seems like the stalls in Jurong area charge lower prices for their food. Even the iced kopi is cheaper $1.30. Yishun charges $1.50. Maybe I should move to Jurong

very sad in the next 10-20 years all these traditional food all disappearing... with NEA outsourcing new hawker centres to private "socially conscious" enterprises... jacking up rental/cleaning and miscellaneous costs. even the old hawker centres like whampoa and old airport road also being tender out to be managed by their appointed management contractors.. new gen hawker centre end up is all the chain wanton mee, bak chor me, roast meat, etc one drink stall in the whole hawker centre... no longer feel like hawker centre but non aircon foodcourt...

Are all the food video showing are organic dishes?
Are they encourage to eat organic dishes ?

Base on the price of organic ingredient, the organic dishes are tasteless and no much sweetness.
Should use approved industrial food chemical to enhance the flavor of organic dishes.
Can make more things in the end.
