Hello! If you would to Kungsleden again, would you do it with hiking shoes/trail runners or would you go with a real hiking boot? Very good videos btw :)
Hi, great video. I see that you wore hiking boots there. How much muddy/wet were the conditions? Are trail runners a good idea, or is it better to have something more waterproof? I already hiked GR20 and some other trails in trail runners, so I´m not worried about stability - more cold, blisters, etc. from having wet feet.

From when to when did you make the trail? Did you import the zpacks stuff (bcs. Taxes will be insane with the price)?

Haha, there's one thing which I always carry with me on the trail... That's cortisone salve incase of HSV-1 symptoms. I saw once a woman on the trail who had this on her face and she looked devastated, and the symptoms were pretty bad.
I learned that the cortisone helps and it really does. At least for me it always did. But what helped the most was that I fixed my life, it was my body telling me that something was off... Haven't got it for years but still take the salve - for just in case. Can help others too :) And as a disclaimer - this is NOT a recommendation, just my experience. I'm NOT a doctor or any health care pro. Got the tip from a doc tho 😂 I quess it's a secret cause the actual salve costs fortune 😁
I have seen some bad stuff about steroid creams online and with my brother. You might get bad reactions when you get off the cream. You might get off because it dosent even work anymore.

Hi, I do not have any question to you but maybe two interesting things that you could need on such trails like the wet Kungsleden:
1. As long you are having a Rucksack like an Osprey and not willing to give out lots of money for an ZPacks Pack you could reeinforce the waterrepellence of the Ospreypack by spraying it all around with Nikwax Gear & Solar Proof. It really helps a lot not taking in so much water into the fibre and it dries out much faster, when it has taken a little amount of water in after heavy rain.
2. Even when you have Gore tex Shoes I guess you saw them becoming wet inside anyways. So I like to use a pair of sealskinz waterproof membrane socks. They keep your feet dry and warm and they are very breathable.
3. I hope you did not wash your hair directly in the river?

Like to Hike Hey! Nice tip about the backpack! :) Also about the socks (although in Sweden my shoes didn’t get wet on the inside, in Scotland I definitely needed some). I only washed my hair/body in a shower when I slept in a hut (two times on the whole trail), so don’t worry!
@@floordenil Hello Floor. When you had no wet feet I would say you were very lucky. Depends also in what month you going to hike up there in sweden. I was two times there in beginning of september and one time I had 1 week continues rain and at the end even ice on my tent.
Hmm, I have seen in your videos that you always had problems to sleep during strong wind and rain. Take some ear plugs with you :). Only with your home sickness I can`t help you ... or you should better take a friend with you. One question I have already now. I have seen that in the Kungsleden Video you have a ZPacks Duplex tent with you. Did you order it directly in the USA or did you bought it in Europe? And how much did it cost, maybe with customs duty (when it came from the USA)?
@@liketohike1589 I bought it in Europe and didn't think about customs duty, so that was an unpleasant surprise (to say the least :p). Customs duty alone was about €250.
About the home sickness: don't worry, I had it just once in the beginning of my trip, I enjoyed the rest to the fullest! Doing this alone is completely my own choice and I wouldn't have it any other way :)!

How do you like the zpacks duplex? Wasn’t it quite drafty in Lapland (since the inner is all mesh)?
And what about the bathtub floor, did you get any water in the tent? I assume it’s quite a cold “tent”?
I’m looking at it for Kungsleden in the summer. The weight is attractive but I’m a bit sceptical if it works for Scandinavia (I live in Denmark).

Love Z-packs, als je nu voor het nieuwe jaar een uitdaging zoekt die net weer wat moeilijker is dan de Kungsleden, ga dan terug naar Schotland en kies voor de Cape Wrath Trail.
Zelf ga ik voor mijn laatste stukje GR5, Thonnon les Bains naar Nice , de grote Alpen oversteek.

@@floordenil De Gr20 lijkt me ok leuk, alleen beetje aan de korte kant. De PCT Zal er voor mij helaas nooit van komen, tenzij ik een echtscheiding wil, 5 maanden weg is extreem lang. Hoop de Alpen doorsteek in 25 dagen te doen.

Impressed that you took a Zpacks Duplex! I did have a look at it, but ended up taking my Scarp 2 instead. I was on the trail around the same time in 2018 (possibly a tad later) and I have to say that I didn't regret the extra stability in some of the storms. Although I think if you pitch the Zpacks in the right place it would be fine - having the Scarp 2 just allowed me to be more careless with my pitching which was nice in someways because we found some cool camping spots. Also - I couldn't agree more about having 3/4 or full zip rain pants! Great video :)
Hey! The Duplex did a great job actually, it all depended on putting it up as tight as possible (in the beginning that wasn't easy for me) and having a spot that's not in a windtunnel/on top of a mountain. I loved it! And yes, the rainpants... If these wear out, I'll definitely buy some that zip all the way op :). Thanks for watching!
The Z-packs duplex is more stable and firmer than you think. I use it myself though. I have also used him during my kungsleden, but also in Scotland. During storm stood on sheer rock at the Atlantic Ocean, no problem.
Hi Floor! Could you tell me which Colombia shirt you got and in which size? I'm looking for one, but many reviewers say the XS was too large for them. However you seem very skinny, so if the fit on that one wasn't too large for you, it will definitely not be too large for me.

Hey Lisa! I just took a look at my Colombia shirt, but couldn't find a label. Unfortunately I can't tell you which size I got... I found these shirts in a lot of different outdoor-gear-stores, so maybe you can try to find a Colombia shirt in one of those stores and check the sizes?

Hey Floor, I love your videos! I want to do the Kungsleden myself this August and in my guide they said that you definitely have to take Sandals so that you wont hurt your feet while crossing rivers. Would you recommend that?
Paul Kollatz I had no problems with deep river crossings, I could always step on stones above the water. But maybe I had a ‘low-water-year’!
NEVER cross rivers barefoot if you have to put your feet below the waterline.

Hey Jana! I didn't take anything like that. The bears are brown bears so they are very shy towards people. I did put my food in a bag outside my tent each night, just to make sure an animal wouldn't break into my tent. But a canister or bear-bag is not necessary :)!

älkl huji Hey Alina! I didn’t use any maps. There are red signs on the trail which are really clear (and there are a lot). Don’t follow the red crosses though, they guide you through the winter paths and go through rivers (that are frozen during winter)! I also downloaded the app ‘Fjällkartan’ (in some coutries it’s called ‘swedish mountain maps’) in which you can download the map of the Kungsleden. That way, you can see where you are on the trail! Have a good hike, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it :).
For your own safety never ever go on a hike like this without a map and a compass. The red signs on the trail will not be visibel when the fog sets in and you can get lost.
@@riinajurgens8272 Even in the era of the electronic gadgets a compass and a map are a must, you should not advice otherwise. It is not safe unless you are walking the Fjellreven classic with a lot of people around you. Consumer electronics sometimes fail, they are not built to Mil.spec so I always bring maps and a compass as a backup.
@@perbhn6986 you are absolutely right, without a map it can get dangerous. Navigating with map and compass can be difficult if you don't practice. I prefer having a gps with me where the GPX file from the trail is downloaded and the maps. The GPS is also handsome to record your own progress.

Hiking newbie here: I was wondering how much cooking gas did you end up using for the whole trip? Planning to do the trip this summer and am intrigued by guessing the amount of gas I’ll need. Do they sell gas at the shops?

From my experience, if you cook 3+ times a day, you'd use around 50g a day
100g good quality gas boils about 10l water... So with this info newbies can estimate the need for the gas. For instant food one just boil the water, and voila. I make my own food for hiking /trekking so I boil the water and put all in a thermos can. Then I always have warm food ready. In the evening I make the porridge which is in the morning ready, then before hike I prepp for lunch etc. Always forehand. So I boil always 500ml of water which takes "few minutes" to boil and I have breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper for boiling the water.

Hey! I did the full 440k in 18 days. This looks like a fast tempo, but I just kept hiking because the days were so long :p. About the cost of the trail: I actually don't really know... The boats are altogether something like 120 euros, then it's just food that you need to pay for and maybe sometimes a sauna (around 5 euros if you have a membership card) or a hut if you want to sleep in a bed for a night (depends on which hut, varies from 10 €/night to 60 €/night if you are a member) :). If I would make a rough estimation I would say I spent 500 euros on trail.
Ben ff door je video's aan het gaan, gezien we tegenwoordig toch maar amper mogen reizen. Aan je gear list te zien toch wel fan van Darwin/Dixie :-)? Mag ik vragen waar je de z-pack spullen hebt gehaald?
Haha, die heb ik een tijdje geleden héél sterk gevolgd, inderdaad! Als ik nu op zoek ga naar nieuwe spullen probeer ik toch iets lokaler (lees: Europees) te kopen. We hebben hier eigenlijk ook zo veel merken die goede lightweight kampeerspullen verkopen!

I used the Zpacks Duplex, it's in the video! If you would want to buy it, be sure you buy it in America or let a friend take it from there, the import-cost was very high on that one :)!

@@jasonrandall3875 Stockholm and Hemavan are about 900 km apart from each other so you need to take a bus/train/plane to Hemavan :). I took a plane to Umea and a bus from Umea to Hemavan. If you want to hike North to South, you can take the nighttrain from Stockholm to Abisko :).

How did you handle condensation given that the Zpacks Duplex is a single walled tent? Did you ever wish for a solid inner telt instead of an open mesh structure? Mainly because of the cold and strong gusts of wind.
Editors Music Yes, that’s an issue. In the beginning of the hike I didn’t pitch it real tight and found some condensation dripping on me in the middle of the night. However, when I hiked on a bit further and learned how to pitch it really well (tight), I found that the condensation just slides down on the inside of your tent and drips down through the insect screens on the sides. But it’s still possible that you have to wake up once a night to dry the inside of your tent with your towel. I’d still pack this tent if I’d hike the Kungsleden again, the advantages of being able to pack it while it’s wet (and not having to dry it out during the day) and the ridiculously low weight weigh up to the condensation-problem for me :).
About the wind problem: that’s totally fine. Just don’t put your tent in a place where a lot of wind can get to it. If you pitch it real tight that’s not an issue!
@@floordenil Ah, I would be nice to save some weight... I'm debating whether I should buy a trekking pole single walled tent or go for the Hilleberg Enan which weighs 1200g. I'm a bit uncertain whether I will like or even need trekking poles given that my base weight is around 5kg.
Editors Music I highly recommend trekking poles, but that’s maybe because I’m so used to them. They kept me from falling several times on the trail, haha. On dangerous windy days in the mountains I was very happy to have them. Also handy if you want to know how deep a puddle of mud is! But 5 kg baseweight is really low, so maybe you don’t need them. Hike your own hike of course!
@@floordenil I like the idea of trekking poles, multi-purpose. I hiked Abisko-Nikkaluokta mid-August this past summer, great trail but from my research the best part is hiding between the mountains, specifically Mårmapasset-Vistasstugan-Nallostugan-Stour Reaiddavaggi or Unna räitastugan if you're interested in the future. I heard you mentioned that the northern part is a lot more crowded with people. Lesson learned the hard way, haha. The Fjällräven Classic started the same day I started but from the opposite direction which I wasn't aware of until I got to Abisko. There were so many people, literally like a highway filled with hikers and as a Swede felt obligated to say hello when passing people which was tiresome, to say the least. Anyway, I felt that some trekking poles would have been nice during the rocky terrain and when ascending/descending Tjäktjapasset so I'll probably give it a go in the future. Thanks for the input!
Hi Floor, leuke video! Vond je een tent met een mesh binnentent (ipv solid), dus van een soort gaas, niet koud i.vm. de wind die er doorheen waait?
Hey! De tent die ik gebruikte heeft geen binnentent, maar er waaide wel wat wind onderdoor natuurlijk. Ik vond dat dit meeviel (maar ik had wel een hele goeie slaapzak en matje)!
Ben je onderweg veel mensen tegen gekomen waar je mee samen gelopen hebt? Of mee gesproken in de hutten?
RJ GN Hey! In het zuidelijke deel (onder Kvikkjokk) is het allemaal wat rustiger, daar ben ik een paar mensen tegengekomen die dezelfde richting als ik wandelden, daar heb ik wel enkele dagen mee samen gewandeld! Je komt wel zeker mensen tegen als je een pauze neemt in de hutten. Daar zijn altijd de hosts, maar ook vaak wandelaars!
In het stuk boven Kvikjokk heb ik wat meer mensen ontmoet. Er zijn nog steeds niet zo veel mensen die van zuid naar noord wandelen, maar wel al wat meer daar. In de hutten in het noorden had ik het gevoel dat de mensen veel afstandelijker waren. Dus ondanks dat er meer mensen in het noorden waren, voelde ik me daar wel een tikkeltje eenzamer!
Thanks! Ik zag ergens dat je deze zomer de GR20 gaat lopen - ik twijfel zelf nog tussen deze twee routes. Met name de vraag of GR 20 niet te druk zal zijn (maar ik vind mensen ontmoeten onderweg wel leuk).

Upbase Hey!! I loved the duplex on the Kungsleden. As long as you pitch it real tight, it’s fine. On my first night, I put it up a bit too loose and it almost collapsed 🙈. Condensation is a bit of a problem, though: I woke up at least once every night to dry the inside of my tent with my towel. But the benefits of the tent (weight, easy to set up, you can pack it while it’s still wet...) weigh up to this, I think!

@@ReadyToDanceAcademy I just ordered the Bonfus myself and went for the camo version! As it's made of a thicker (hopefully more durable) material and wild camping is also not allowed in Belgium ;)
Floor, apologies if you have already answered this, how much on an average did your pack weigh on the trail? Did you find the trail comfortable for that weight?
Chindu Sreedharan With food and water I think it was around 11kg on average. This weight was perfect for this trail (of course: the lighter the better), the Kungsleden doesn’t involve a lot of heavy climbing so a pack of 11kg is perfectly fine!

Chindu Sreedharan the gear you see in this video is about 9kg altogether. With food and a bit of water that’s about 11! So camera gear etc is included in these numbers!

Hey Floor! Geen idee of je deze reactie nog zult zien, maar ik vroeg me af hoe groot jouw drysacks waren voor je eten en je kledij. Ik ga in de zomer ook de kungsleden doen maar loop wat vast met het inschatten van hoeveelheden en wil geen te grote of te kleine drysacks aanschaffen. :))

Eigenlijk uit het hoofd heb ik geen idee wat ik gebruikt heb op de Kungsleden… Ondertussen heb ik een ander systeem waar ik één grote drybag gebruik (een pack liner eigenlijk) waar ik alle spullen insteek die zeker niet nat mogen worden (matje, slaapzak, etc). Is lichter én neemt minder plaats in dan allemaal aparte zakjes te hebben die tetrisgewijs niet echt in elkaar passen in je zak, of toch niet elke vierkante centimeter optimaal benutten :). Dus ik zou daar eens naar kijken!

I just bought a 60L (Im 186 but only weight 76, I refuse to carry more than 11kg haha) At the beginning I though "if she is skinny and she can do it, I can do it too", but then you went into the cold water and I was like whaaaaat, you are so strong hahahah ameitzing
Hahahahahaha. I'm sure you can do it too! :) About the 50L: it was definitely enough for me. One time I picked up food for 5 days, then it was a little tight but still everything fitted. Just be sure that every item you pack is something that you really need and you'll be fine!
leuke video! grappig hoeveel spullen we hetzelfde hebben :) afijn, ik ga zeker nog eens door al mijn spullen,en vergelijken...had je trouwens veel eten mee? ik zit er over te denken 2 pakketten met eten te maken,en vooruit te sturen naar Fjallstations,zodat ik niet alles daar hoef te kopen...nu ga ik naar je Kungsleden video kijken,heb er nu al weer meer zin in!
jveenbaas hey! Ik had enkel eten voor een viertal dagen mee vanuit België (is eigenlijk zelfs al te veel), de rest kocht ik daar. Pakketjes eten opsturen kan zeker, maar ik wou niet met het gedoe zitten van op tijd in het postkantoor te moeten zijn en extra geld te betalen om een pakketje vanuit België helemaal naar daar te sturen. Nog een voordeel: ik kon altijd precies kopen waar ik op dat moment zin in had!

Does it cost something to sleep in your own tent?
Hey Pernille! No, it's free to wildcamp in Sweden. However, nearby Abisko, you're not around to wildcamp because there's a National Parc there. If you want to camp there, you will have to pay to sleep at a campsite. Also, if you want to camp nearby a hut or cabin you will have to pay a small fee. But then you're allowed to put up your tent near a warm shelter with maybe a sauna!
Im suprised everyone says u dont need a water filter. But microorganisms live in every water no? So is it really safe to just drink out of streams without a sawyer filter or something? I'm going to section hike the kungsleden trail in a few weeks and I am suprised by these no filtration opinions.
I’m in Norway right now and while the water is very clean here, I must say that I changed my opinion on that one! I use a water filter now, always :).
the pads on the shoulderstraps wont really help a lot, they have to be wider not softer
Leroj Laroj Oh, they helped for me :). Couldn’t feel my left shoulder for 5 weeks after hiking the West Highland Way (without them), didn’t have a problem when hiking the Kungsleden (with them)!

Salut Sebastien! L'import était super cher en fait. Je pense que c'est environ 30% du prix du quilt, donc ça dépend de combien cela coûte!
@@floordenil Merci Floor, Je viens de regarder sur le site pour un -6°C grand et Xl il faut compter entre 300 et 350€ selon la taille et option + frais de port et taxe. Il faut un budget de +- 500€. Par contre tu as pas eu froid au pied avec le Revelation ? J’hésite entre le Revelation (modèle couverture) et le Enigma (pied fermé)... Tu en pense quoi ? Tu ferais encore le choix du Revelation ? Quelles projets randonnée cette année ?
@@sebastienduhayon3967 Je n'ai pas eu froid avec le revelation, mais je combine le quilt avec les 'goose down socks' de Zpacks. En Suède, je portais encore une doudoune la nuit. J'achèterai le Revelation encore, c'est plus polyvalent et j'aime ça :). Je n'ai pas encore des plannes pour cette année car je suis très occupé cet été. Probablement ça va être une randonnée plus courte!

Hi Floor, you have some really great gear! I was wondering if you used a trowel and if so, wich one? And if not, what did you use as an alternative? I don't really see your stakes making a good shovel so maybe your trekking poles? Anyway, great video! Planning on doing the kungsleden myself this summer :)
Hey! Yes, I used my trekking poles but I must admit it was veeeery difficult (especially when you need to go really fast :p). Next time I'm out hiking, I will take a deuce of spades trowel, those things weigh literally almost nothing!

@@arnaut7303 Yes, I made a mistake there :p. It's veeeery expensive to get them delivered in Belgium... I think the best way to buy them is to go on holiday to America and buy it there or have a friend who goes there on holiday take it with him/her. I will buy the deuce of spades from Amazon I think, yes. I still have to look into the best option to buy it online :)!

I like to keep my luggage down to a bare minimum and it still weighs about 14 Kg. One item I can't do without is a radio, just to keep up with the news.
There might be radio on your smartphone.

Fuel Cannisters are mostly at every starting point. Also in some shops on the trail! What do you mean with 'we hat did the trail cost'?

The boats are altogether something like 120 euros, then it's just food that you need to pay for and maybe sometimes a sauna (around 5 euros if you have a membership card) or a hut if you want to sleep in a bed for a night (depends on which hut, varies from 10 €/night to 60 €/night if you are a member) :). If I would make a rough estimation I would say I spent 500-600 euros on trail. (about 600 dollar).
