    Finished my MassIV Trail attempt about a week ago, had to stop at Sognefjellshytta because of very bad weather (heard of "Hans"? Worst flooding in 25 years,...) so I could't do the last 2 legs Nordaleseter and Sota Saeter. Your tips were helpful and I even used the small maps of your book as a tiny backup in case my phone dies. Thank you for the inspiration, you , Mikkel Mandrup and Grei Fi made me do that trail, it's my favorite hike so far! I agree, starting in Haukeliseter and doing it northbound is the way to do it : ) Cheers, Søren.

    I wish you many fantastic hikes! I hope your channel continues to grow!🌻
    The thing about hiking in trail runners is popular with the ultralight community, but I've tested hiking with waterproof shoes, not boots, cheap ones from Decathlon, and they kept my feet dry, even while hiking in mushy ground, at altitude, in Kyrgyzstan. And they also dry pretty fast, because once I entered a river with them and decided to only stop to sleep when they were dry. It was ok.
    You have a rain jacket, rain pants, but your feet have no protection against the rain. It may have played a role in making you feel so cold at night. You were perhaps suffering from exposure.
    Have you considered using a bidet instead of toilet paper? You can make a small hole on a simple water bottle lid and spray water to clean after... well, after. And switch lids after the deed. Same bottle for drinking and bidet, because the bottle doesn't contact you. Toilet paper is a plague on trails and don't belong in nature. If you decide to switch to a bidet, use it at home before going on a hike, to get used to it. And a pee rag. Anything to avoid toilet paper. If you do go for toilet paper, may I suggest you take it back with you to dispose of it in a city, in case you aren't doing it yet?

    Watch out for thin wollen (merino) gloves. I've not found them to be super fantastic... maybe as liners for more durable gloves. An ice-climber friend of mine swears by the Ejendals Tegera gloves, waterproof, warm, and durable. I've yet to try them out, though.

  • @user-hp8eh7pb5l
    @user-hp8eh7pb5l Před rokem +2

    Hi Floor! Thank you for your videos, they are always a pleasure to watch! Regarding the gloves part, I also had a hard time finding reliable waterproof gloves in the past. I used the Showa Temres 281 on the Kungsleden a few years ago and they worked impressively well. Never had wet hands with them, and they did withstood heavy downpours. The 282 version is supposedly warmer (I have not tried them though, so I can't say how much), so they might be a good alternative for colder climates. They're not too hard to find in Europe and they aren't too expensive either. Cheers from Bxl!

    Like you I also have to layer up like crazy when sleeping. I'm convinced those naked sleepers are warmed by their delusions.
    A tip for you slippy thermarest, some people attach sticky foam pads on the bottom, stuff that you would stick on furniture legs to stop is starching the floor. A few of these will make it a little less slippery.
    Also any book recommendations? haha

  • @LieveNeven

    Hi Floor!

  • @z0uLess
    @z0uLess Před rokem

    Nice! This is what I do: Wet trail runners with wool socks. No experienced hiker I have spoken with will wear Gore tex, so 100% agree on that. Imo, I've never seen the point of down jackets -- they are too fragile and the use cases are too narrow. If you have a sleeping bag that is graded for the temperature you are sleeping in, then lifehack: boil water, pour into one of the drinking bottles and put it inside the sleeping bag between the legs before going to sleep. Thin merino wool underwear is the most efficient and light piece of gear that you bring with you. I honestly bring only one per 3 days ( I can stretch it even furter some times). I've never brought thermal pants/sweathers. You can save a lot if weight if you only use one pair of pants and one pair of long wool underpants. Wax the pants to make it resistant to water, but use the wool pants if there is a lot of rain and you have to keep warm. I never bring rain pants, but I invest a lot of weight into a long oil treated rain jacket that 100% keeps water from going either way through the fabric, but has flaps on the back that maybe does release some moisture. This setup with no rain pants is probably the most risky part of how I pack (I have experienced days where I was frozen to the bone with this gear, one of them in the cold 2022 summer, but as long as I am moving, eating and there is a hut close enough, which there always is, I have managed). I may be a bit special in terms of being able to take a lot of cold, though. The other jacket I bring is a light weight wind resistant one that release moisture. So I just switch between these when the weather changes. Three different thicknesses of wool sweaters to adjust for temperature. The thick one is mostly for keeping warm in an emergency. Wool mittens. I dont bring a hat, but I make the long wool neck into a hat by putting it on as a headband, twisting the remaining fabric top part and then pulling it down over itself.

    Add some strips of silicone or shoe goo under the mat to keep it from slipping. For high quality quilts in Europe i would check out Cumulus. Nalgene bottle with hot water is a lifesaver on cold nights, just put it inside a dry bag to protect yourself and your quilt/bag from potential leakage - remember to open the bottle once in a while to release built up pressure (do NOT use a normal plastic bottle for this or you will find out why the hard way). I also cannot stress the impact of wool boxers / underwear - it makes a huge difference and doesn't stink as much (anti microbial).

    Love your videos! You should do the Nordkalloteden next. Last year I followed part of it from Kilpisjärvi Finland to Abisko and then the Kungsleden to Kvikkjok. Im deciding what to do this year and the Massiv or some variation is high on my list. Do you get the feeling that your far from everything on the massiv that you do up north? Can you send a food package ahead? Im also considering going into Sarek from Kvikkjok and then taking the Nordkalloteden and Padjelanta to Singi and onto Kebenkeise and Nikkaluotka. So many options but i think the best mtn scenery in Norway is accessed via the massiv. Plus its not too far from Bergen and Lofoten. Did you see the Aurora on the massiv? Were there self service huts on the trail?

    A quick question. I've been eyeing Atom+ pack and can't decide on 40L or 50L. Weight wise it's only 30 gram difference. Just want to know if i could carry on 50L one on an airplane?

    • @floordenil
      @floordenil  Před rokem

      Heyhey! Aaawwww, thank you for your kind words :). I would say it’s possible to take a 50L-pack on an airplane as you can make it as small as a 40L-pack because of the roll-top-system. So if you put less stuff in your pack (and maybe carry that in a seperate bag on the plane), you can roll that top a lot more which makes your pack smaller :).

    • @amraa23
