But something went wrong on the way to the screen. The Mummy was a financial failure, poorly received by critics and movie-goers alike. The Dark Universe was dead on arrival. So let’s look back at this bungled attempt at creating a cinematic universe and find out What the F*ck Happened to The Mummy!

SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?

Yep! WAAAAAAY too much "universe building" in this movie. It was ridiculous, and felt manipulative. And, Universal hired an entire staff for this dark universe, and even build a new wing at the studio for their offices. The whole thing was just dumb and ill-thought out.

The biggest problem with this was that Tom Cruise made it more like "Mummy Impossible" The flick has flashes of Brilliance, but I see why it didn't quite work. The should have kicked off the Dark Universe with something else that wasn't still fresh in people's minds, like Frankenstein or Black Lagoon.

I saw the film years after its release, it was already forgotten by then but i still remembered the echoes of the not so overwhelming reviews. I watched the movie just because it was simply an option on one of the streaming services and boredom. I was pleassantly surprised. I even recommended it to all my friends and anyone who would listen. I guess people expected something really different than what they got. I liked the more mature approach. If you be honest withoutself, The Mummy(1999) is a kids movie. Its not bad but its a kids movie. TC reboot is a little older audience. Thats the main difference. I also liked the effect and the ideas. Those two eyed four pupils was INSANE. Loved it.

The problem is really quite simple - the studio had a slate of classic -- what's the word -- right "horror" movies -- but felt compelled to remake them as big budget action/adventure movies. What would they have done if they had a slate of classic rom-coms? Turned them into big budget action/adventure movies? What if they'd decided to update/remake a bunch of classic musicals -- would they have turned them into big budget action adventure movies? Or classic comedies? Or classic gangster movies? Would they have opted to turn all of them into big budget action/adventure movies?
And yet over and over, the studios, when they look to update/remake horror movies -- the mummy, Dracula, Frankenstein -- they go down the same stupid route -- transform the monster into a romantic hero (if possible) and turn the movie into a big budget action/adventure movie -- and then watch, confused and surprised, over and over and over, as the movies tank.

The problem here is that it became a Tom Cruise movie. What i mean by that is if you look at major stars, there are movies which are catered to them and the Tom Cruise vehicle started with Top Gun. Parts of that formula is present here

I think if I wanted to do my own Dark Universe this is how I would do it.
First I’d call it the Universal Monster Universe instead of the Dark Universe.
This is who I’d want to cast in my entire Universal Monster Universe.
    1. Ben Affleck as Frankenstein Monster.
    2. Henry Cavill as Doctor Frankenstein.
    3. Ana De Armas as Bride of Frankenstein.
    4. Glenn Powell as Son of Frankenstein
    5. Elisha Cuthbert as the Invisible Woman.
    6. Gal Gadot as the Mummy
    7. Bill Skarsgard as Dracula
    8. Patrick Dempsey as the Invisible Man
& some more I’m not gonna continue.

I agree with you, because he was THE Problem and I am not surprised by that because he even destroyed Stanley Kubrick's last film Eyes Wide Shut with his ego according to what R. Lee Eremy said in an interview from 2006. If I was Universal, I would've gone for somebody other than that Circus Midget being how he is a Control Freak which was why Tim Burton didn't want him as Edward Scissorhands because Tommy Boy wanted the character to be a Buff Macho Manly Stud instead of a Shy Timid Emo Goth, I would've gone for either Sam Worthington who Universal wanted as Dracula back when Dracula Untold was called Dracula: Year Zero or Justin Long who is underrated but loveable, they would've been better than Circus Midget.

Let me first get it out of the way: Mummy reboot is palatable and okay IF and ONLY IF you forget any Mummy movie you've ever seen and heard of any of the other Mummy films or ideas and if you don't connect it to the Universe. I would have loved a monster universe, regardless of the idea that the concept had passed. My biggest problem is the miscasting and script. I love Annabelle Wallis, though not in this film AT ALL. I like Sofia a LOT but meh as a Mummy villainess. However, the biggest travesty is allowing Cruise to step anywhere near this. He killed this film for me. I just can't get past him because I cannot stand looking at his face (I want to punch it). I would take Crowe's worst ham day over one minute of Cruise. He makes the story (while fantasy universe) completely unbelievable and is just a vanity project (like every other film he is in). Brendan Fraser was delightful; Arnold Vosloo divine. Rachel Weisz and John Hannah adorable. Patricia Velasquez perfect. We all know the legend of Boris Karloff. So this is just horrible.

    • @stainshield
      @stainshield Před 5 měsíci

I agree with you because there was no need to get him being how Sofia Boutella who is a woman would've made The Mummy okay and it should've been about her just as Dracula Untold was about Luke Evans. That Circus Midget ruined The Mummy with his ego which didn't surprise me because this wasn't the 1st time he has done this, according to R. Lee Eremy in an interview from 2006 it was Stanley Kubrick's last film Eyes Wide Shut which that Circus Midget Tom Cruise destroyed with his ego which was why Tim Burton didn't want him as Edward Scissorhands because Tommy Boy wanted the character to be a Buff Macho Manly Stud instead of a Shy Timid Emo Goth as Johnny Depp portrayed him as. I would've gone for either Sam Worthington who Universal wanted as Dracula back when Dracula Untold was called Dracula: Year Zero or Justin Long who is very underrated but very loveable as Nick Morton, because any one of those 2 would've been better than that Circus Midget and they would've had great chemistry with Annabelle Wallis being how they are close to age with her and chemistry was why Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz did so well together, whereas Tommy Boy is old enough to be Wallis' father being how she was just 1 when he was in Legend with Tim Curry and Top Gun with Val Kilmer.

I really thought this mummy flick wasn't as bad as ppl said it to be. Its about the same quality as any summer blockbuster that you forget after a year. Certainly better than Madam Web or any sony spidey stuff (morbiud, venom 2) lately.
Do agree with the mummy impossible comments made, tom cruise wasn't really suitable to play the unheroic character cuz audience will keep expecting heroics from him. The dark universe "shield" stuff would have gone better near the end or as a post credit scene (to be excitment for the next film)
They should have gone thru with the 2nd movie and see where this would go. As they had the perfect director. And just put a tighter rein on the budget (keep it under 120-150m)
