  • Harbor Freight is a new store find for me! There is one that is right next to my local Joann Fabric, so I decided to go in an explore one day. I was pleasantly surprised. Hardware stores are awesome places to go for crafters because there are all kinds of goodies that can be used in the craft room. But, the organization is especially helpful, and Harbor Freight offers some really affordable options! I'm sharing a few of my favorites in this video!

Because my husband likes to tinker, we have gone to Harbor Freight for a number of years. Aside from the organizational items, don't overlook it if you need hammers, screwdrivers, pliers, safety gear, gloves, heat gun, scissors, microfiber cloths, magnetic bowls to hold pins, and anything else you might find in a hardware store. I am not a tool connoisseur, but it is my understanding that some of their tool selection are pretty good quality. They always have good coupons too.
An interesting thing about Harbor Freight as a company is back at the beginning of the COVID outbreak, when medical centers and doctors found themselves scrambling to find PPE, Harbor Freight donated a huge amount of masks, gloves, etc. to providers in need. I was very proud of them for joining in the effort so quickly.

I am a crafter and I actually work at Harbor Freight...ya know it is funny I have been there for 5 yrs and I yet haven't bought a rolling cart...that is next on my list..honestly I do love all the storage items we have. I do think we discontinued the revolving tray rack. I actually have the wooden workbench in my livingroom, I stained it darker and it looks very farmhouse. One thing you may not have noticed is in the paint isle we have replacement blades for the rug cutter which are round and fit a rotary cutter and are way cheaper than your craft stores.

So glad to find a craft video with alternative solutions for storage. My whole craft room is made up of seville classic units, they are more for tool storage and garage storage , but they are awesome for a craft room. They are super sturdy, lots of drawers , some shallow , some deep , and they even have wall units and large tall storage cabinets. Mine are stainless steel, with wooden tops and I also have one unit that has a desk with drawers and a built in peg board with light and electrical outlet strip. Most of my pieces were purchased from Sam's Club or on line and most were given to me from my husband and family as gifts! I have always loved the industrial look and these cabinet units will hold up for a long time. I also get organizational items from the hardware stores, they are always more reasonably priced than any craft store and usually more sturdy to boot. I began using a fishing tackle container for my art supplies when I was in college back in the early 80s waaaaaaaayyyy before that was a trendy thing to do. As a child I often visited my dad's wood workshop in the basement and helped him with projects and I still love tools and tool storage items, plus the smell of newly cut wood. thanks for the video, I hope a lot of viewers will consider this type of storage, it will last for years and is so versatile and sturdy and very affordably priced.

I use the paint brushes for ink blending when a light touch is desired. You can ALWAYS get a coupon to use if you go online. Look around your husband's work space to see how he uses his "toys... a tools" . Then go back to HF. It is an amazingly fun place to shop for a crafter.

I got a fish hook storage box that is great for putting in alphabet letters so each letter has it's own place. I can die cut all the letters and they're small enough to fit in the small spaces where fish hooks go. The plastic is sturdier than the bead storage things in the craft store. Plus each little section has it's own removable divider so you can adjust the size to fit in some die cut words. Clear plastic so it works anywhere!

The Husky has 9 drawers all together and its on casters that you can lock. Its in basic black but I love it. I got a magnetic dry erase roll from Amazon and labeled all my drawers for easier organization. You can find a lot of neat things for crafting in Harbor Freight. I've used Harbor Freight and products meant for tools in my craft space for decades. And my HF is right next door to Joann's which makes me wonder if you're in or near Woodland Hills, CA. I have a 24-section that my letters and numbers have been in forever. I have another used for sewing notions. Machine needles in one, hand needles in another, head pins, ball point pins, crochet needles... I use one of the heavy-duty tool bags when taking my Cuddlebug and plates to/from crops, I have 14"x4"x2" long narrow plastic parts bins on shelves; I just pull out the bin I want to use and it fits along the side of my workspace and they really hold a lot of supplies. I store all my alcohol inks in one, sprays/mists in another, re-inkers, pigment inks, and for dye based ink pads I have three of these broken down by color families: neutrals/browns/yellows/oranges, reds/pinks/purples, and blues/greens. Would love to meet you if you're in my area, thanks for all your videos, I know they take a lot of prep and time to create and provide them.

Got the big one at Lowe's had a great sale on them plus addition % off for veterans, and the other was like $100.00 at Ace. They are great. The smaller one holds all my watercolor paper and miscelleanous stuff. So if you are thinking about getting a rolling chest go for it. Many items that are higher priced for women are actually specially engineered for women, like razors. No one is stopping you from purchasing men's razors, but you might not like shaving with them. I wouldn't automatically assume that items sold to women are automatically priced higher without finding out more of the back story, like is it *really* the same product that is sold to men?
Also, for storage items, I would shop around. Sometimes the craft stores have sales, sometimes Walmart has bins for a good price.

Renee 42 some things are, most aren’t. I mean I totally slammed Fisher Price for charging sometimes as much as TEN DOLLARS more for the exact same toy with the only difference being color. Their smart vacuum does the same thing, whether it’s pink or blue. Same goes for all sorts of things like their little push popper thing, shape sorters, rattles... They price those things based on color alone. This garbage starts in infancy and never stops. If you don’t believe me look it up. Pink tax is very real.

    • @ScrapsArt
      @ScrapsArt Před 3 lety +3

Ummm a razor is a razor at the end of the day. Whether they are making it for a man or a woman, the costing is the same. They just change the color and make it look pretty. The same goes for a lot of products. They cost the same to make. Honestly the pink tax needs to go...it is just crazy. The same containers would be charged crazy high if they were targeting women and if they were better colors lol.

Been married 55 years. Date nite was Harbor Freight and Lowes. DIY projects on a 4000 sq ft house I’ve lived in for 63 years definitely requires lots of nuts and bolts!!! There have been lots of switch outs and trade outs between spouse and I. Now that our nine kids have left the nest we are reconfiguring rooms to specific “titled” creative stations.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Harbor Freight!!! I almost always buy out their supply of those 25-piece boxes. I use them for sorting/storing beads and jewelry findings, sequins, rhinestones, my diamonds for diamond painting.... the possibilities are ENDLESS! Being small, they are very easily transportable, and far and away are my favorites! I also have one of the canvas portable tool boxes, and if I ever get to do retreats again am considering getting these as a gift for my attendees... you can stuff it full of tissues, lip balm, hand cream, all sorts of goodies for a very small price! Sign up for their catalogs and specials, the great deals get even better! They also have small pliers, flush cutters, etc that I use in jewelry making, and you can find things like picks, general purpose scissors, etc that again are such a bargain that if it's ruined it's not a big issue... just go get another one!

Great video, Elisa. Thanks for featuring Harbor Freight. I bought one of the canvas rigger's bags last fall, painted it (each pocket a different color), then did different Zentangle on each pocket, and I use it for my morning faith time: It holds my Bible, journals, devotional booklets, prayer books, etc., plus there is lots of room for markers, pens, and my reading glasses. I can carry it around to wherever I want to sit in the morning. I love it, and what a great price!

Their magnetic parts trays are wonderful. I use them for my straight pin storage. My hubby painted one red with white polka dots. They are extremely inexpensive compared to the ones us quilters buy for our pins. Then too, the have extension magnets on an expanding/collapsible rod really nice for picking up pins that drop on the floor or your metal bobbins that get legs and run off the counter. It is one of my favorite places to shop. Take a look and be pleasingly surprized!

Love harbor freight. All my tools are separated by craft in the yellow and black tool boxes. Clay, glass, scrapping, etc. if I’m working on a project place my tools on the handled section and place at my work station. When I go to classes I just pick the related tool box and go. I invested in tool sets for each so they’re always ready. Got their drill press for making holes in glass etc. my go to place for most things including mallets etc. u will love it

Hi Elisa... I'm just finding this video in June, as I am attempting to organize a craft room in my home. Thank you for the different perspective on Harbor Freight. Sometimes seeing something through fresh eyes and open your own. So many tools for organization. Also, I'm not sure if you are aware, but if you can get on the mailing list, you can receive their sales catalogs in your mailbox. This little booklet is FULL of coupons and items featured at reduced pricing. Also, there is always a coupon for 20% off any item in the store. That would come in handy. We used to get these. Not sure why we haven't seen one in a while, but I will be looking into that right soon. Again, thank you!

Thanks for all the great ideas. We have a HF store about 50 miles away. Years ago I bought the canvas riggers bag for $10 and it is my go to and grab bag for painting and art journaling. I modified it by opening up a few of the little pockets (there’s many!) to hold smaller loose items and there’s still a ton of room for sketchbooks, water bottle, towel, phone/camera, etc. I did plan on permanent ink drawings on the outside filled with washes of acrylics...but haven’t done it yet. Now I’m thinking of one of those drawer units on wheels😊I paid a lot of money for a couple storage units from Michaels that were a pain to assemble and really aren’t that strong.

I have to stop putting off a trip to Harbor Freight. I've been curious for awhile.
My quirky hardware storage hack was a Bucket Boss.
It's a canvas storage do-hicky that straps onto a 5 gallon paint bucket.
Several pockets on the outside, and there are inserts (sold separately) to put inside to give stacked storage. I didn't have those.
There is even a lid that serves as a (rather uncomfortable) seat.
At least the one I bought decades ago was uncomfortable. But I was young and resilient at the time.😄😄
It's where I stored my sewing supplies when I was young and broke...and resilient.😉
I just looked online and they are still available, although the colors are different. Mine was royal blue, I think.
    It's a handy multi-functional item.
Although probably not to everyone's taste, it's worth giving it a look.
Thanks for jogging my memory. I had forgotten about it.

My youngest son told his brother, "forget the furniture save Mom's craftroom" and they did. Still makes me laugh and I'm grateful they know me so well. Hope your renovation goes well.

Whoops. Forgot this tip. Get some bumpy rubber mats (comes in rolls) for shelves to keep things from rolling around in the drawers - BUT - More fun is to use the craft foam sheets that come in a variety of colors. They provide a good contrast in "dark" drawers to locate specific tools. Small foam pieces can also be placed inside plastic drawers, at the front as labels, for visual identification of contents.
