@@mariebelladonna437 This whole song is adorable.. I've seen it many times over the years but I only just now caught when he says "Shhh!" to her saying," 25 years my bed is his" lol.
"Do I WHAT!?" Golde probably never even considered that question, even to herself. Their marriage was arranged, so it wasn't like it even mattered. That's why it took her so by surprise when Tevye asked. Their love may not have been the stuff of fairy tales and romance novels, but it was deeper, more substantial.
Well the marriage was arranged. That's the tradition. It never occurred to anyone to think about wether or not they were actually loved. Discovering that they actually do love each other despite having no say in whom they married is priceless
Exactly right. Dad told me that a girl he was interested in once asked him what he thought love was. He said it's the decision to commit yourself to someone, to put their needs before your own. She told him that was cold. "Yeah, so?" Took him until he was 30 years old to find someone who thought of love the same way he did. He and Mom will be married for 41 years come April.
"Love is a choice", that's what my dad taught me growing up. Took him two marriages and over 30 years to figure it out for himself, but he said that love is waking up next to another person every day for the rest of your life, and every day you say "I will love this person today"
My favorite part about this number is that not only is Tevye asking her if she loves him, but with all the "unconventional" means of his daughters falling in love and getting married, he's trying to confirm that everything he believes, the way he was brought up, isn't wrong. With everything changing around him, he wants to make that the ways he was taught and have affected his life so drastically, like his marriage for example, actually work.
Could there be love in 'arranged' marriages? Modern sensibilities would say no - but can we say that two people who get married in their early 20s really understand what it means to spend their lives together?
@@Dreader1962yep. Whether youre in your 20s or 30s or 90s, you have to work on the marriage every day, and the things you liked about each other in the beginning will change over time. Additionally, many people who are poor or ugly or at the mercy of historical circumstance would be happy to have anyone, even in an arranged marriage, and would work hard to perform their spousal responsibilities.
+SindromeDeMascotinha I always have the dumbest smile on my face because of this scene. I can only hope that I will be in a relationship where I get to do this.
"It doesn't change a thing. But even so, after 25 years it's nice to know." They'll still be Tevya and Golde. Griping about each other, fighting, and being cantankerous. But they've been doing it all out of love the whole time.
I love this so much, and what makes it great is Golde and how her expression changes from shock, to annoyance, to reflection and finally, to admission and acceptance. It’s not something she wants to think about but realizes that they have been through so much together that she is his life, and he is hers. It’s beautiful and true to life. I’ve been married 37 years. It’s not bliss but we’ve been through a lot.
+Daniel Ryan marriage does not equal love.my grandparents were married for 60 years and they never loved each other, they would admit that.Actually the scene was realistic in a sense that people do not know even what love is,they think they do.
+Bruno Padilha I disagree. They know what love is. They've lived together for 25 years through thick and thin. This song shows that when they take a moment to think about it, they didn't start their marriage loving one another, but over time they did fall in love. It's realistic because love is something that happens with time. They fell in love naturally, so for them it's nice to know they both feel the same.
+Bruno Padilha I'm not discounting that your grandparents know they aren't in love. But doesn't this prove that people do know what love is? How else could they say for certain that they aren't in love, if they have no idea what it's like?
This is the sweetest part. I love how Golde, who's usually portrayed as this tough, no nonsense woman lets her guard down and shows her more vulnerable side.

My Wonderful Wife and I were married for 30 years....until her sad passing in my arms.....Though in those 30 years together we did say we loved each other, it was our actions, emotions, and feelings being shown towards one another, that truly made that love real and special. This is such an iconic moment!!!! 25 years of being on auto pilot and finally taking the moment to pause and consider if their understanding of marriage and love is valid for them. Although their daughters are pursuing their own ideas of marriage, it's a beautiful moment of realization that what the daughters are aspiring to, the parents have achieved. The sweet innocence if this moment is so precious and one of my all time favorite scenes.
On top of that, what I find most endearing is that they're reaching this pure, sweet, innocent love AFTER 25 years of marriage, with all the weight and trauma of that time adding joy and sadness to their realization

That look on his face after she says “I suppose I do.” So boyishly happy, he might as well have been that kid win school excited that the girl he likes likes him back.
I adore this song! The moment in between Golde saying "I suppose I do" and Topol singing back, where he kinda looks away like "Hee, she loves me" is my favorite part, it's just about the cutest thing ever :)
Wow, 9 years ago I watched this song, and even now to me it is still one of the most beautiful love songs I came across. The moment they sit on the bed together, being a little shy even after 25 years and he nudging her shoulder, both realising they do love each other, is such a tender moment . I just love it.
I always tear up when I watch this part of the movie. Norma already knew about the cancer that would soon take her beautiful life. A fact she shared with the producer, director, and her costar Topol. None of the rest of the cast knew. It still touches me to see them interact in this film with this knowledge.
I remember first watching this movie when I was in middle school. I was reluctant because it was an "old" movie and my dad was making me watch it, but I instantly fell in love with FotR. And this scene/song in particular, I recall crying with happiness because it's such an adorable love, the kind of deep love everyone (and I do mean everyone) yearns for. My favorite part is when Golde sings "starved with him", she recalls that even through the hard times, they stuck together. I love it.
This song reminds me of my maternal great grandparents. My great grandmother was married beforehand to a man, who died in a farming accident, leaving her with their two little boys. My great grandma was so distraught, she nearly went crazy and was supposed to be put in a mental institution, but for some reason was not. She, in time met my great grandfather. He seemed to have taken an interest in her, asked her to marry him. She outright told him she didn't want to marry him and would not love him,... but marrying him was the only way of getting out of her parents house. "Do You Love Me" is a masterpiece of a song. In fact the entire show-Fiddler On The Roof-is one of the best shows ever created. I saw it three times on Broadway. Let me suggest that CZcams is a place to enjoy the theater. This song is fun and lovely. In my humble opinion CZcams is not a forum to discuss marriage and divorce. Enjoy the video people! This song is lovely! I hope everyone is happy after seeing such a great performance!
After being married for nearly 7 years I know the questions they're asking of each other. Even nowadays when we generally marry for love, at least in the West, reaffirming that we each love the other is an important thing to do. I never dreamed what real love was like when I first saw the film as a child, but as a 40 year old... I do. And the song still makes we weep happy tears.
I love his face right after she says "I suppose I do"! He looks shy, like a little kid! They have 5 kids and she says she love him...HE"S SHY?!! So funny.
FIDDLER ON THE ROOF! I was lucky enough to see the original Broadway show three times! It was a Broadway treasure. This song "Do You Love Me" is one of my favorites from the entire show. Now I can watch it on my iPhone! Amazing change due to technology. What hasn't changed is the fact that this is still a great classic performance! The show and the song were both magnificent!
That last shot of them sitting side by side on the bed as the camera pulls away from behind is my favourite in the movie. It's just so simple, tender, and sweet and they're not even really touching.
I think that this is my favourite song in the movie, and my favourite of the 4 romances that occur - I especially like the line "for 25 years I've lived with him, fought with him, starved with him, for 25 years my bed is his, if that's not love what is?", because for me, that's what love truly is... standing side-by-side no matter what.
Rest in Peace Topol, just read that you have sadly passed away. If I was a rich man, sunrise sunset and matchmaker make me a match are my favourite songs from this brilliant film🙏🏾
The broadway version of this song was played at my grandfather’s funeral. I remember seeing my family laughing at parts of the song while crying. It’ll never not affect me.
This remind me of my grand parents, may Allah bless them. They have been married for about 40 years now. They hadn't seen each other until the night of their wedding but they learned to care for each other and love flourished between them.
this is probably the most underated song in the whole musical. not musically advanced, just a plesant feel good song that never fails to put a smile on my face
This is a great demonstration of what love is. People today usually confuse love with temporal happiness, which is emotional and physical gratification. God's word shows us what love is, the sacrificial giving of oneself. Note, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son...;" Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself for it." "...the life that I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me." Golde and Tevye did what there parents said, to learn to love each other. Golde listed all the the ways she gave herself for Tevye over 25 years, and then realized that what she was doing was indeed love!
Well said sir! Love is not the work of feelings or emotions, which easily fade. Love is the work of the will. Love is deciding to love someone, despite the imperfections.
A wonder and accurate Biblical perspective on what love really is. Love is doing, love is putting one above yourself and giving to another in ways that don't even benefit yourself, thats Godly love!
Bryan Benedetti it would be nice if more people would realize this. I heard a person say once they want a love like Grandpa's and Grandma's but then they refuse to make any sort of commitment and certainly not like what anyone's grandparents had.
The Bible shows us clearly that love isnt a fleeting emotion, it's a decision. You choose to love someone - so while arranged marriages seem so odd to us in our modern culture it doesn't really matter in a way because of the nature of love, real love as God ordained it. Love is an act of the will accompanied, not dictated, by emotion and acts of service.
Okay, what happened is they learned to love each other or grew to love each other. But love isn’t love if it’s an obligation. It isn’t a labour of love if you are doing it because you have to. That is why arranged marriages are not usually good or happy but every once in a while, you get a relationship like that. Love isn’t something you decide to do. It is something that can however grow over time if you try. That is what happened here. But even over a long time, sometimes love doesn’t happen. Even if giving the other person everything you have. Sometimes that leads to resentment because they don't realize how much of yourself you’ve given or because you wish you could have saved these things for someone who you wanted to have them.
My parents weren't brought together by way arranged marriage, but I think of my parents when listening to it. This song speaks to couples who've been married for a long time which is rare nowadays.
My mother told me she loved me all the time I never heard my father say it, well maybe a couple times but he said he never heard his parents say it but he knew they did by what they did
My hometown's Community Theatre put on this musical in 2009 and I was in the chorus. It was just before my senior year of high school. I absolutely adored this musical and I can reflect on it differently now than when I was a teen. I've been married for 8 years and these have been the best years of my life. Golde and Tevye's relationship is still as sweet as ever.
This song is very special to me. My late husband and I found this song encouraging in our marriage before we were Christians. The thought that you could LEARN to love one another was revolutionary.
This sweet little song is always my favorite, as it's a lovely picture of that old married couple. While the feelings have stayed the same all those years, sometimes it still feels good it say it/ hear it
That's what love is... Not only an action, but a realization that as time goes by you knew that the person that you think about or care about is the One for you. :)
I think it is true that a healthy marriage involves arguing about little things almost constantly. I mean, hell, if you are arguing, it means you are communicating and you care. A difference between arguing and fighting though.
I know it’s 4 years too late but I agree no relationship should have some form of arguing and disagreement.... you would be surprised how many people don’t understand that
Excellent point. Additionally, think about what it is they're fighting about. They bicker quite often, but none of it is on a personal level, where they are angry at who the other person is on the inside. They argue over little external details, but are bound by who they are on the inside. Only when arguments become personal does fighting become a problem, but I think they were far stronger a pair than they seemed.
Get a person you can fight with. People arent taught two important things. How to fight and how to break up. There will be less love songs but more love
Bickering and arguments (as long as they aren’t too harsh) are a sign of a healthy marriage. Humans by default all think differently, living with another you are bound to disagree on a ton of things. When I hear households with spouses that never argue two things come to mind. 1) one of them is afraid to argue, and lives in complacency 2) you somehow hit the mega lottery and found a human that matches you to a T
@@killerkitten7534 It took me a long time to see it, but a certain amount of bickering is very healthy. It vents all the minor irritations and niggles that inevitably build up in a relationship in a low pressure way, rather than have them build up to a gigantic head of steam that one day explodes.
I watched this movie so many times as a kid and this was a song I sat through wanting to get on with the story, but now at 24 this randomly came up while I was listening to soundtracks and it made me tear up. It means a lot more as an adult.
When I was young this scene always made me feel happy that some day this would be me and my wife....now 37 years later I saw this on a podcast.....watched with my wife ...the only woman I have known....and 37 years later ....I teared up....for we both are now these characters....I old now and more emotional....her still as beautiful as in 1987 now more stern less emotional after 20 years following me around the country while I was in the army...2 grown kids...2 teenage grandkids....she now has worked so hard to make us a home a family and a future....God it hit so hard ...for yes she loves me and I her and man this scene is everything ❤
"My father and my mother said we'd learn to love each other." Well...they did! The feelings were always there but after 25 years it's nice to know that the feelings for each other are genuine & they realize they've had them the entire time, even if they're just now admitting it to themselves & each other
I know lots of married couples will say this, but, after 30 years, my late husband and I LOVED EACH OTHER!! I used to hum this song to myself whenever he was around, but I already knew the answer.
One of the most romantic songs ever written.
"It dosen't change a thing, but after 25 years it's nice to know" 😭😭😭👏👏
I can't count how many times I've watched this scene & I still tear up!
May they both rest in peace now. They gave us so much! Thank you Tevye and Golde.
That last shot of them sitting side by side on the bed as the camera pulls away from behind is my favourite in the movie. It's just so simple, tender, and sweet and they're not even really touching.
This is the most romantic song! Just makes me smile every time!!!
This song is adorable
What is love? Through this song, we find out that it is more than a feeling: it is also commitment. So much wisdom in this film/play.
Que filme é? Por favor 😊
@@betesantos1576 Fiddler on the Roof.
This is forever magnificent.
My tears are flowing. I am blessed.
Peace ✌️ 2023
Rest in Peace Topol, just read that you have sadly passed away. If I was a rich man, sunrise sunset and matchmaker make me a match are my favourite songs from this brilliant film🙏🏾
The broadway version of this song was played at my grandfather’s funeral. I remember seeing my family laughing at parts of the song while crying. It’ll never not affect me.
This is a great song to play at a 25th anniversary party. 😉 Poignant and sweet!
This remind me of my grand parents, may Allah bless them.
They have been married for about 40 years now. They hadn't seen each other until the night of their wedding but they learned to care for each other and love flourished between them.
This is a beautifully tender moment between the two of them
+Jason Kolodny its a beautiful scene--unvarnished, the real deal.
I've never heard this song... and it is a moving experience that brought me tears to my eyes... thank you
I love how this song progresses like a conversation... You can feel the tension easing between them :) sweet!
this is probably the most underated song in the whole musical. not musically advanced, just a plesant feel good song that never fails to put a smile on my face
Imagine... being married 25 years and never saying 'I love you' once.
Just as terrifying or more... saying it from the start and then letting your lives turn into hell....
My mother told me she loved me all the time I never heard my father say it, well maybe a couple times but he said he never heard his parents say it but he knew they did by what they did
Not everyone needs to say it. It can be said in many different ways.
The point is they don't say love, they live love.
Deeds, not words.
"Golde..... do you love me..?"
"Do I WHAT?"
"If that's not love, what is?"
And it took him 25 years to know why he feels lucky.
It is the most telling scene of the play.
The look on Golde's face when she says, "Do I What?" So perfect.
That is so sweet and wonderful....after 25 years they realize that they love each other......my eyes water when I listen to this song.
Beautiful. Always. This scene never gets old.
Also, I love when Tevye asks Golde...He has to "shush" her. Like "love "is clearly something to keep quiet. I love this film!
I love this song so much! It truly shows what love is, Most people don't understand what love now, it's sad,
This is the most beautiful love song ever written this pair of lovely couple express their love in one of their greatest way it touched my heart
神駒太夜了好好休息
,
This is my favorite song in the play, it never fails to bring on a tear or two.
This is probably my favorite love song.
I love how Tevye asks Golde, "Do you love me?" and she replies, "I'm your wife!" As if to say, "What does love have to do with marriage?"
we're doing this at my school next semester and my teacher wants me to be Golde, so I looked up her songs and I LOVE THIS!
How did it go?! :-)
1) one of them is afraid to argue, and lives in complacency
2) you somehow hit the mega lottery and found a human that matches you to a T
@@killerkitten7534 It took me a long time to see it, but a certain amount of bickering is very healthy. It vents all the minor irritations and niggles that inevitably build up in a relationship in a low pressure way, rather than have them build up to a gigantic head of steam that one day explodes.
I don't know why, but this song always reminds me of my parents. Except they've now been married 40 years.
My parents celebrated their twenty-fifth recently. They've been singing this together on and off.
You’re a fool! “I know, but do you love me?” I loved that line haha
I watched this movie so many times as a kid and this was a song I sat through wanting to get on with the story, but now at 24 this randomly came up while I was listening to soundtracks and it made me tear up. It means a lot more as an adult.
lol I love how after he shushes her, she continues to sing even louder lol
I love Topol's voice.
God bless you, Tevye. You are a truly good man, and a smooth operator to boot.
Still a better love story than Twillight!
+Tilly Finnes fan Definitely. It's a sin that you even compared the two
+sandypickle sin? No, he built his personal 150,000 kilometer canal to hell.
Every love story that’s not Twilight, is better than Twilight.
This meme only deserves to be used on things that are not actually love-stories. Otherwise, it's just an insult.
Anything is a better love story than Twilight.😅
sweetest song in the whole movie
One of the greatest movies made .
"My father and my mother said we'd learn to love each other." Well...they did! The feelings were always there but after 25 years it's nice to know that the feelings for each other are genuine & they realize they've had them the entire time, even if they're just now admitting it to themselves & each other
Topol is so charming in this movie. This song in particular is just so sweet.
I love the part when golde sings "I suppose I do", that almost makes me cry!!!!
They're so sweet....so lovely. Like my late parents, I love them both.xxx
I know lots of married couples will say this, but, after 30 years, my late husband and I LOVED EACH OTHER!! I used to hum this song to myself whenever he was around, but I already knew the answer. YES, HE LOVED ME!! AND I LOVED HIM!! I still love him even though he's been dead for 2 years. We had a roller coaster relationship that in hindsight, wouldn't have missed for anything in the world. 🙂
Just brilliant. What a movie. Branded in time.
I love how naturally it comes, like "Of course I love you. Just because I've never said it before doesn't mean I don't."
ending always chokes me up..
"You're a fool."
"I know"
My parent's marriage in a nutshell and they've been together for over 20 years! :)
Arghhhh why do I tear up every single time?? T_T
Cali Lovett I'm a fully grown man but I can't help but smile when I watch this.
This brought tears to my eyes. It's so sweet and touching.
