Interesting lesson! I once said 'Rio de Janeiro' and the guy said whaaat?? and I repeated 'RIO DE JANEIRO' lol He replied no no no.. it's 'hiu dji janeiru' I didn't ask much about the R pronunciation... Thank you for making this!

Sou falante nativo de inglês britânico e agora dou aulas de inglês para minha sobrinha brasileira (do Tocantins), que assim como eu mora na Itália e é praticamente bilíngue em italiano. Aproveito para aprender português para poder falar com meus bisnetos que moram no interior de São Paulo. Compreendo muito bem o português escrito, mas minha pronúncia é influenciada pela língua da minha esposa, que é o galego, muito parecido com o português europeu em vocabulário e gramática, mas não na pronúncia e ortografia, mais semelhante ao espanhol europeu (castelhano), o que é muito menos justificável e penso que é feito para fazer com que o Galego pareça mais diferente do português do que realmente é, por ex. A Coruña / A Corunha ou coello / coelho. Novamente, obrigado.

Bpm dia. Obrigado pela sua resposta. Pedi para minha sobrinha brasileira pronunciar R em várias palavras e notei que ela tem um sotaque padrão perfeito. Seu R final é próximo do H inglês. Ela nasceu em Brasília, mas morou principalmente nos estados de Mato Grosso e Tocantins, onde tem parentes do povo indígena Xerentes.

Muito obrigado. I managed to pronounce the tongue twisters 😅 although I often have difficulty hearing the definite and indefinite articles between words in Portuguese , such as “pregou um prego”.

Hey, thanks for the great insights, what is the carioca pronunciation of R when at the end of a word, or in the middle.. is it always the same as _rr_?

The 'R' sounds in the carioca dialect are mostly aspirated.
Ex. Ronaldo (as the 'h' sound in 'hospital') - at the beginning of a word
carro (as the 'h' sound in 'hospital') - RR
andar (as the 'h' sound in 'hospital') - at the end of a word
porta (as the 'h' sound in 'hospital') - R before a consonant sound
I would say that the only contexts where they make a flap in when 'R' is between vowels and when 'R' comes after a consonant.
Ex. cara - brasileiro - América
Brasil - branco - praia.

You said the r is pronounced like the American h when its at the beginning of a word, but why does that not apply to "roxo" aka the color purple?

In fact, it does apply to 'roxo' as well. 'Roxo' should be pronounced just like any other word starting with the letter 'R'.
