Excellent video. We are getting ready to head out on our very first flat towing adventure (biting nails) - After researching (excessively) about flat towing, and reading the owners manual on recreational towing, I think we're ready for the open road (1,600 miles cross-country). I appreciate the info on this video, very clear and concise.
The reason you’re supposed to be in park and the transfer case in neutral is to prevent the transmission from moving. If the gears move inside, the pump isn’t running which means no cooling and no lubrication. You’re hurting your transmission.
2019 Wrangler with automatic should be placed in park and transfer case in neutral then just tow on, not sure if same for all year models but this is the suggested way to flat tow
My wife an I have been full time RVing for just over eight 8 years now with our Motorcoach, we started out towing our Ford Expedition and then in 2019 we went to a Ford F-150 4x4 but as it turned out , unlike we told, it was not four wheels down towable and the mechanic advised us to tow it with the engine running. This last week we purchased a 2017 Jeep Wangler 4x4, automatic transmission, four door. We had our Roadmaster Tow Bar moved from the Expedition to the F-150 which was no problem, but the move from the F-150 to the Jeep Wangler frame may be a problem, but I feel much prouder that we made the move to a Jeep Wangler for our Tow Vehicle. Thanks for you channel and safe travels 😀
Thanks so much for the video, very helpful.
Cool to see some younger campers like me doing this!
We just got a 1995 cherokee to pull behind our class c. It's more expensive than I thought for all the stuff!
This is really great.
Great video, thank you.
Some states do require special licensing or CDL based on weight of towed and towing vehicle, so your advice to check the state regs is right on.
@@bobme1ga278 Research Texas. Okay, it isn't technically a CDL, but you may be required to get a Class A lor B driver's license, which most people don't have. Most states issue Class C licenses for non commercial drivers. So, maybe not technically a CDL, BUT your typical Class C license is not legal for driving an RV over 26,000 pounds GCWR.
I been flat towing for 9 years.
All stickshift vehicles recommended.
Automatic vehicles tend to get damaged.
Transmission doesn't get disengaged.
All new vehicles are mostly automatic ,
So make sure it has the neutral option.
Jeeps have them.
And steering wheel should be unlocked.
Depending on the vehicle, key has to be open to have steering wheel unlocked.
Also never back up, wheels might turn the opposite way.
Thanks for the Q&A
It was a good video
Thanks for watching!
On tire rotation, I'd say yes, you need to rotate them based on miles rolled, not just miles under power. Tires wear while rolling, so they don't care if the vehicle is towed or driven.
Just saw y’all driving down through OKC my wife and I are working on getting our camper renovated and I subscribed
Tre England thanks for the follow. When do you hit the road?
Wheeling To Dream we are hoping within a few months but we still are working on finding remote work and we should be good to go
Good info. Nice camera and drone work. Appreciate how you work together as a team and not talk over each other. Music, to me distracted from excellent content. I subscribed.
Thank you!
Great!
is there a speed limit on towing a jeep? (newer model jeep) for example the 2020 ford edge GT and a few others (all mfg. approved flat towed vehicles) indicate a 65mph max speed. this appears to be awful slow for towing... thank you for all input!
Jeep did away with the locking column on the Wrangler in 2010. Leaving the transmission in gear is for lubrication. You will (not maybe) for sure be in for a horrendous repair bill by not putting the trans in gear. We saw many a Jeep come into our shop on a tow truck because of not putting the trans in gear. The AT Jeeps that smoked their transmissions would happen within a few hundred miles max. You have been very very lucky so far.
Wow we are actually learning a lot lol We have absolutely no experience with towing a car behind! We live out of a fifth wheel, but one day we hope to upgrade to a Class A! Awesome to see you guys being young and enjoying life to the fullest! We are full Time RV Living Travel Nurses. We also just started an RV Channel!! @@WheelingToDream Thank you so much for the support! That means a lot to us ❤️Stay safe out there!!
How do you put the Jeep transfer case in neutral if the Jeep is in park?
Is it possible for a single operator to handle a flat tow hookup and detach?
That’s how we travel
When I have had to back up just 1 to 5 feet I just start up my tow vehicle( Wrangler) and use it to back up the RV. My wife stays at the wheel of the RV.
Hey guys
You only have to be legal to drive in the state in which you are licensed. It's called reciprocity.
Lol good luck with that
Thank you, I'm towing my TJ wrangler and still had some doubt, you clarified the whole thing. Happy Easter
Tj has steering lock
Jeep states that the tranmission be in park (or 1st gear for manual) and the transfer case in neutral is to prevent the transmission from spinning internally. If the gears are rotating the pump isn’t running which means no cooling and no lubrication. You are seriously damaging your transmission. Why do you tell others to follow manufacturer but you don't??
I can hardly make out what you are saying?
The mileage difference isn't going to be as much extra cost as if you were driving both vehicles instead of towing one.
Thank you!! Total cost?
The entire tow package is linked in the description If you wanted a breakdown of everything.
Did you notice much of a change in fuel economy? Great video!
Next time, please do NOT add a music track.
Seems as the ignition will be on while towing? If so, it may be important to have a wiring harness that also helps to maintain the towed vehicle‘s battery.
When they say leave the car in park for auto… isn’t that bad? Isn’t your wheel lock when u pull there’s so much drag that will waste your tires and break your transmission?
It's better to mount a tire on front just push cars around backing is easy
