  • What's happening, folks! I'm back with another ABBA reaction from their 1974 album Waterloo, and this time we listen to the simply titled Hasta Mañana," a song with beautiful singing from the ladies and a sweet if also sad sentiment. So join me as we listen to more ABBA. Cheers!

Maybe it's the 'don't know where don't know when' line but this song always reminds me of the old wartime songs, only updated for the 70s. Always liked since I first heard it.

The guys beginning to realise the girls vocals are far superior.
This is one my favourite early ABBA songs along with "I've been waiting for you"
There a few other catchy little ditties but these folk pop ballads with Agnetha on lead were my favourites before the full ABBA vibe kicked in.

I'm glad you see this as a journey. It's fascinating to hear the progression in production techniques - always an Abba strength - and the increasingly layered texture with the girls' voices always cutting through the mix. What really astounded me when listening to the "Voyage" album is just how much we've missed that over the past 40 years. It was more than a breath of fresh air; I felt like screaming "Listen, people. This is how it should be done". I'm fully aware that there has been a ton of great music in the interim, and that Abba are not (and never were) everyone's cup of tea but there has definitely been something missing.

This gem came out in the year I was born in 1974. The first Abba song I rememeber listening to day in and day out. Adore it!!!!! They had to choose between this song and Waterloo for their entry into Eurovision 1974

I see! Well given the history people have explained, I suppose they chose correctly, but this is a great song too.

Another great track from this album was the Frida lead "Gonna Sing You My Lovesong", where she's 'the other woman'. Definitely an underrated track with a heavenly chorus.

Hello again Matt, so nice to see your next reaction to ABBA's album "Waterloo" (1974)
    "Hasta mañana" (means "Until tomorrow")
it's a good song (7pts) of "Waterloo" álbum
It's nice, it's the first of a series of ABBA songs with the title in spanish but the lyrics in english:
Hasta mañana ; Fernando ; Chiquitita
also ABBA have songs with tittle in italian:
    Mamma Mía ; Andante andante
    and in french
    Voulez Vous
"Hasta mañana" is a soft ballad well performed, which was in the vein of typical Eurovision songs
but it did not have the distinctive and overwhelming power of pop rock "Waterloo", with the presence of the two leading female voices
It was a risky and wise decision, which gave ABBA the triumph in Eurovision and the start of his fantastic worldwide
Agnetha sang in 'Connie Francis style'
(she was her model of singer)
    her voice is absolutly beautiful
"Hasta mañana" wss one of the few songs from the "Waterloo" álbum (with "Honey honey" and the smash hit "Waterloo") that ABBA performed in TV, at Spain 1974 and Australia 1976
in 1980 ABBA recording "Hasta mañana" in spanish, and was included in the full album "Gracias por la música" (with all ABBA classic songs in spanish)
I send you a big hug from
    Buenos Aires Argentina 🇦🇷
    South America
GOD bless you and stay safe
And today is special to say:
    Hasta Mañana, querido Amigo!

Until the last minute, this was going to be their entry for Eurovision 1974. Luckily, Waterloo was the final choice.

Yep, it definitely sounds more like most of the other ‘74 Eurovision entries. Thank God they chose Waterloo, this wouldn’t have stood out at all.

I always wondered if this was inspired by "Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree" by Tony Orlando and Dawn as it has a musical similarity. Sung plaintively by Agnetha in her Connie Francis inspired style, it's sweet and hummable, and is a great happy/sad tune. Always liked this one.

I read somewhere that they were about to give up on this song because they couldn't find an arrangement/style that worked.
Then Agnetha stayed in the studio on her own, and did it in the style of Connie Francis, who she was a fan off. I think the result really works, but I'm glad they went with waterloo for Eurovision.

This was originally the song they planned to enter for Eurovision, but they changed their mind realising it was too focused on Agnetha and not the whole band.

You've got to really hate Abba not to like this one. Anni-Frid is my favourite voice but Agnetha is wonderful on this.

Crazy - this song is no less schlager-esque than "Put On Your White Sombrero" and "I Have A Dream", yet it's this one I really like 😊

      @mattsnider2667  Před rokem

Ha, I've heard a few folks use that term ("schlager") but am not familiar with it in terms of music history. Any context you can share with me here?

    • @ingvarjensen1088
      @ingvarjensen1088 Před rokem +1

@@mattsnider2667The German word "Schlager" is literally the direct translation to the English noun "hit". I can't explain it better than Wikipedia: "Schlager music (German: [ˈʃlaːɡɐ], "hit(s)")[2] is a style of European popular music that is generally a catchy instrumental accompaniment to vocal pieces of pop music with simple, happy-go-lucky, and often sentimental lyrics." It's hard to explain, though, because firstly that definition would fit many pop songs, too. And secondly, the modern German schlager music has been amidst a revival for years now. But the traditional German schlager of the 60s and 70s which I'm referring to with the ABBA songs was music our aunts and grannies liked to hear back then. A bit naïve, a bit schmaltzy, a bit kitschy - but never ever daring 😂 Hope that helps, Matt ❤
