Howdy all, This week I put together a short video of some footage from the last few weeks. I was away and havent had time to get you a full Vid or really get much work done on Artemis - BUT i'm back and going full steam.
FYI dont sweat the cracking it is just epoxy around the keel washer.
Some of the washers on the Catalina 30 will even have glass running over them. I will say you should put new epoxy down once you get this job done

I have friends with Cat 30’s.. this vid will help greatly! Keep up the digging!
Sweet glad you enjoyed it
Coming along nicely , great attention to detail. Keep up the good work.
What can I say I'm attentive 🧄🧄
I’m really enjoying learning the boat with you along the way. I’m a power boat guy but would love to learn real sailing. Glad you made the channel!
Thanks man maybe you can get out for a sail before you head to Florida
@@Sailing.Artemis I'm sure I'll at least get a glimpse. Well be hanging at Croton point one of these days!

glad you enjoyed it
@@Sailing.Artemis I really enjoy your style of vlog, you just tell it like it is, and you made me want to tandem skydive! Already talked to a company out here in Washington

Definitely want to see more details on the steering adjustments. Mine is really loose also. And I noticed the bolt that holds the radial drive to the rudder is at spec, but very loose. The play in the wheel occurs for this reason; the bolt is moving around.
Sounds like you may need to drop the rudder and replace the bushing
I hope to have the steering and exhaust vid up next week
Man, you scared me with those Epoxy flakes. We hoped to splash this easter, and Now its winter and snow again. Do you even get snow? 😄 Stay safe. 🤣👍
Scared me too lol
And yes we get tons of snow
Motor goes in this weekend or next then splash as soon as possible
I have a Cat 30 1984 that is project boat as well (not sure your year, but it looks newer). What is the "diving" TANK in the aft lazarette?
That is not a diving tank
It is compressed nat gas aka CNG
The thought with CNG is that if something is left on the grass will disperse rather then lay low in the boat
The issue is getting the tanks filled
Where are you located with the boat
To tighten the steering cables you do not loosen the cable clams. You should go to the back of the quarter berth and ends of the cables are looped through some very long eye-bolts which are double nutted. Loosen the locking nut and tighten the first nut to tension the cable and then lock down the lock nuts.
On thing that you should also check espesially given that some of your keel bolts were very loose is the keel stub. The structure between the lead keel and the nuts and washers in the bilge consists of the fiberglass hull then two layers of 1/2" CDX plywood and a covering of fiberglass. Many of the older C30's have gotten water into the plywood which rots it to black goo and makes the keel bolts loose. The best test is to drill some small holes into the bottom of the stub right next to each of the keel bolts. If all is well, you should drill through about 1/4" of fiberglass and then hit a 1" layer of clean yellow wood chips. If the wood comes out black, you need to pull out the old rotted wood and replace it with something like G10 composite board and then cover with some layers of fiberglass cloth and resin. The Catalina Yachts drawing for this repair is available in the files section of the C30 FB group.
Given that you are on the hard and the engine is out, it would be a perfect time to do the repair if needed. I would be highly suspicious of that aft bolt. Suck the water out and if the washer is pulling down into the top surface of the glass you need to do the repair of can loose the keel or get a very bad leak.
The stub is solid thank goodness
And I'll check for the tensioner however tighten them there was super simple
@@Sailing.Artemis If any of the washers pull down into the base or become cone shaped, you have soft plywood which will lead to all sorts of other problems. Given the engine is out I would make sure I was good before reinstalling the engine because it would need to come back out later to do the repair.
Tightening the cable at the cable clamps will not get it cable tight enough because any slack can cause the cable to jump off when sailing with a lot of pressure on the rudder when the breeze is up.
@@haydenwatson7987 all of the washers are perfect and none have pulled
I'll look at the tensioner inver the aft cabin but I have 0 play now with tighten from rear
But I'll definitely look at the other location
Thank you for the info
Where do you keep yours ?
I can't believe that Catalina used wood in that place. Just ridiculous.
@@yougeo agreed kinda a lack of thought
I really enjoy your videos . Do you think it’s safe to fiberglass the bilge under the washer bolt when the boat is on the water by removing one bolt each time ?
Hmmmm one at a time ? I would be ok with it but that is truly your call
Thank you for watching means a lot
For your stirring quadrant to tighten that cable there should be a tightening turnbuckle between the stirring quadrant and your helm station and it just matter holding one with a wrench and tightening it with a screwdriver on the other 1 you might want to look around a little bit more before you start losing those cables up because they're pretty hard to get back where they belong
It was super easy to do from there the cables didn't come out of the quadrant or clamps
Scupper hoses are a quick way to sink a boat you say.. I wonder how many Jeff Bezos' new boat has..
Lol
Hi Brian. I really enjoy your videos. We are also new owners of a Cat 30 and are newbies. Question, the white pan under the engine (is that the oil pan?) and is it normal that there is a hole to allow drips into the bilge? I’m curious about why our bilge seems oily.
TIA
Wow the oil pan should not drip
Do you have insta ? If so dm me some photos and I'll figure it out for you

68 ft pounds of torque? The Catalina site says 105?
iv seen publications that say 120 and ones that say 62 I choose 68 from sevral places
This was from Catalina Direct: www.catalinadirect.com/keel-bolt-torque-schedule/
@@tryhardfpv5351 I'm going to stick with the boat yards and the people that have made hundreds of these repairs. We will see how it held up in the fall 🙂
@@tryhardfpv5351 that's interesting that they do t call out certain years on that sheet pre 89 is different then the hulls made after I would call Catalina and not Catalina direct before choosing your settings

Lol
So the fiberglass collapsed under the washer when I was torquing down the keel nuts... 🤔 can't say I feel good about it. It's actually somewhat bothersome. I'm certain the Integrity of the fiberglass has been compromised right there.
it was epoxy the wooden core and glass in the stub is perfect
this repair has holden up to a drunken sailer
@@Sailing.Artemis well thank you Jesus, we're gonna find out if it'll hold up LOL
scared me lol

I try to keep some free ones in the back of the van along with the candy lol 🤣

My guess is it's a cheap ass torque wrench and you were way over torquing.
Lol nah that's a snap on and the stoked was way to short
We were able to get the rear one cause the stub is only 2inch
