    Man I just love your channel. Even though I have a degree in audio engineering, I still come here and learn something new. I knew about Mid Side Recording but never tried it, because I love the width of a classic AB Stereo Recording on acoustic guitars. However, the mono capibility makes this very interesting. I never really thought about how this technique actually works, but you did a great job at explaining this! Definitely gonna try it! This could also be very interesting on electric guitar amps with maybe an sm57 as the mono signal and something like a C414 as the side signal.

  • @NBryanBlack
    @NBryanBlack Před 3 lety +1

    Very nice job explaining how M-S keeps its mono-compatibility! I do have one small bone to pick, though. The Side mic indeed must be a Figure-8, (although some might try to fake it with a cardioid... ugh!) but the Mid mic can be a cardioid, an omni, or even another figure-8! It will make a difference in the overall stereo pickup pattern, but if you want more "room sound" in your recording, an omni or figure-8 could be a better choice than the cardioid. I enjoyed your video!

      bro id like to ask you a thing that is making me really confused, fom the moment that you've been producing from 3 years, then, in mixing, raising the high frequencies, I hear a very annoying Zzzzz underneath, I use fl studio and also in the part of the audio track where I don't sing or there's silence this z remains. that is, I don't understand what it is, I thought it was me who raised the frequencies too much but it is a noise that exists regardless, idk for example I have a take, i export it, the initial part before the singing in which there is nothing, not even my breath, that is, it is an extra empty piece that has put the daw at the begininng, if I see in the spectrum, there are these frequencies on the 13,000, which are initially low and it seems there are not, obviously then, I will have to raise them involuntarily to clear the voice, and as soon as this enters the beat i hear it a lot because of this z in the background, I don't know what to do

  • @JiihaaS
    @JiihaaS Před 3 lety

    What people don't seem to realise is that mid-side is essentially *not* supposed to be some super wide mind exploding technique, but a true, natural way of capturing the stereo image, where the sound sources can be clearly localized. And you won't be able to do that if you overdo the sides!
    The other one of the side signals is supposed to cancel out with the mid signal when a sound source is on the other side, while the other side will add up to the mid. This will make the sound come (mostly) from the other speaker, as it should, since that's where the sound source was! If your mid and side signals are not in balance with each other (the sides being too loud for example), the cancellation that enables the localizing won't happen properly.
    That being said, you can of course do whatever you want with your material if it gives you the result you're after. I just think it's good to be aware of what you're actually doing.

    I love using this technique to get a wider feel!
    Sometimes I'll also pitch one recording up a few cents and the other down a few (less than 10 cents difference total) and a very slight delay from one recording to the other to really make it feel huge. Great video as always!

  • @adrianclarke7935

    Aaahh! as last I understand the Mid-Side thing - you create a beautiful stereo mix, so that you can successfully throw it away for the 99% on the population who listen in mono! excellent!
    t.b.h. I had assumed that mid-side was just a posh version of stereo, but now I understand. Many thanks, illuminating and calmly delivered as ever.
    The only trouble with your videos is that every time I watch one, I've got to go back over every one of my recordings AGAIN!

    Fair enough for mono compatibility, but it also means when you go mono, you only get the sound of the guitar where your mid channel mic was pointing. If you only pointed at the 12th fret of your guitar, this is therefore all you'll get in mono, and maybe you'd be missing some of the bottom part of the body as well ! So great mono compatibility indeed, but there is a tradeoff with spaced pair.
    Great video though, thanks a lot !

    My side mic doesn't sound balanced if I sit directly perpendicular to the mic. I figure that this is due to the body of the gtr making more sound than the neck, so the capsule picking up the body is louder and therefore off balance. The way I've been able to remedy this is to turn my chair slightly so that I'm more at an angle so that the projected sound makes its way into both capsules a bit easier. I didn't understand how you got the balanced sound by being at a 90 degree angle, so I went back and looked again and it does seem like you're at a slight angle (although it could be the camera angle). Your results are awesome though.
    Helpful tip: Instead of doing 3 mono files, record a single stereo file with the side mic on the L input and the mid mic on the R input or vice versa. Then use the free Goodhertz Midside Matrix plugin (or their more in-depth paid version simply called Midside) which will do all of this for you under the hood. There are toggle options in the plugin to flip the M/S if your M and S are backwards in the stereo file. You'll also have separate faders inside the plugin to control the center and side channels.

    I wonder how you deal with the loudness problem.
    If you mix in stereo and playback in mono device (cellphone for example), the tracks will sound much weaker. And at this time no one likes low loudness songs.
    And these tracks sound perfect in headphones, but if playing in a live house or music festival, how to deal with the phase issue caused by speaker position?
    Despite doubts, I like this video! Thank you for sharing this technique bro!👍

    If the sides cancel out in mono, there will be level difference. When is this wanted?

    • @JiihaaS
      @JiihaaS Před 3 lety +3

      If done properly, the other one of the side signals should cancel out with the mid signal in stereo when the sound source is on the other side, while the other side adds up to the mid. Being a figure 8 mic, the side mic has a null where the mid mic is pointed at, so if the sound source is at the center, the side mic will reject the direct sound, while the mid mic will capture it. This makes the result closer to mono to begin with, since there's not much information on the sides. Therefore the level should not significantly decrease when mixed in mono.

    • @MattheasBoelter
      @MattheasBoelter Před 4 lety +1

      Nope! That's a pretty common technique. Just be aware that your playing has to be really tight and accurate to sell it. Another option is to record two separate parts. You might be able to get away with a bit more looseness in the playing, and it will likely sound even more full when panned.
