- I saw this pen posed on Facebook Marketplace for only $20. I thought this was going to be some type of scam, but turns out this was a real Montblanc M Series Fountain Pen! It just needed some work to get it up and running. What an amazing pen & a unique find!
Thanks to the viewer Flexi Colon for his helping me confirming the legitimacy of this pen along with @ink_farts on Instagram for sending me pics of a fake one.

This happened to me two years ago I was in a charity shop and saw a Mont Blanc 146 in the display cabinet going for £20. I assumed it was a fake and took a risk and bought it like you did and it turned out to be real! Well done buddy!
Saaaaaweeeeeeet! And everytime you use it, you remember spotting it for the first time in that display case 😉
I’d feel bad for getting a great deal from a charity 😆 😅
I'd offer to pay more if I spot a real one from a charity.
@@r.vincenta.9678 then they’d get curious and look up the real price and change the price
Not only did a good guy get a treasure he appreciates, he also has the expertise to give it the care it deserves.
I have an interesting story: Back in 2005 I was visiting an antique store and asked to look at the fountain pens they had . Didn't see much, but then spotted what I knew to be a Parker pen from the 1930s. I looked at the imprint on the side and it was labeled "Vacfiller". This was a pen from around 1932 and fairly rare....value estimaion was at least $250. Asked the owner what he wanted for it and he said, "It's a Parker. I'll take $20 for it." I couldn't hand him the money fast enough!!!
Very cool, and what an amazing find and restoration!! Definitely the coolest pen story I've heard so far.
Same here 😉
DB! Great find. I once got 2 used, vintage, Lamy Studio palladium gold nib pens on the "Bay for $50.00. They worked. Apparently, the seller got them at an estate sale. They retail brand new at around $170.00 each
Nice find 😎
OMG. You are an artisan for sure! Thank you for this post!! How the entire world doesn't know and love these instruments is beyond my comprehension!!
Dang . . . That’s incredible!! We all need a story like this. Well done and thank you for sharing!!
Even with all the flaws, errors or abuse from the original owner, this was a great find.
I was walking thru a large department store that had a Mont Blanc boutique and I saw a document marker
in the case by itself. The sales lady showed it to me and said it was $75.00. it was part of a set that was missing a m pen and it had to be sold separately. I now have a $500 document marker for $75.00. Authenticity guaranteed by Mont Blanc.
nice find and lovely pen !!! love the way it writes 💪💪
Excellent! I get a vicarious thrill from just watching this. Finding these screaming deals is part of the satisfaction of this passion, so congrats! I can’t top that, but early this year I found an 18K $450 Parker Duofold in pristine condition for $50.
The hunt makes it fun 😁 That's a smoking deal buddy! A guy in our club found a 1920s Duofold never used with matching pencil for the same price..... At a furniture shop! 🤣
What a beautiful restoration! :) Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed watching the video :D
I was pleasantly surprised this turned out to be a legit Montblanc pen. I found out he was trying to sell it for several years and his price kept coming down, but there were no takers as everyone figured it needed a new nib. I guess I caught him at a point of frustration and just wanted what the gold in the nib was worth. Turns out it just needed some work done and it now its one of my BEST writers!
DB, great find, that proves there is nothing wrong with taking a chance. Enjoy it.
I haven’t inked mine in so long I decided to clean mine out just now and put in a new ink cartridge! Fantastic video!!!
Hope you enjoy using it again
These gems are out there. 😁 My experience is with eBay. You just have to hunt for pens from estates that the reseller knows nothing about. Preferably never used a fountain pen. 😈 Exactly how I got my 1912 Mabie Todd Swan C2. Antique shop that knew nothing about fountain pens. Wasn't sold as any brand, even.
Lots of hunting, plenty of patience... And sales tend to be cyclic. Unless it's super rare, price is too much, wait for another one.
Most of my pens are vintage. Ain't afraid to restore myself, and don't have a life, so I can afford to wait (disabled. What else do I have to do? 😁) I've only paid full price for a pen I wanted (Parker 51 Vacumatic) because I wasn't comfortable doing the restoration myself (somewhat specialized tools tend to be needed.)
Great job on a great deal! Thanks for showing it!
I'll never find that deal again!
@@Doodlebud You never know. 😉
Hi Mr Doodlebud, well I'm glad I gave you that 10mins of my life because you probably gave hours to make this video. I'm so happy it worked out for you, it's lovely that you restored this pen. Now, I wish I studied engineering, with yourself and Chris rap52 all that knowledge. Maybe post arts to engineering haha.
Genius work. What a find. Staggering and well deserved. Excellent work. Really pleased for you. D
That serial number blew my mind! 🤯
Awesome luck , congratulations. and loved your capless pilot and lamy pen comparison video
Yes,I believe that you received fountain pen karma because you did a great job with that Montblanc 146. It looks like the previous owner of that Montblanc M decided to use steel wool to polish that nib. Congratulations on your find. You really are a nibmeister.
Yeah I don't know what happened to it or why, but its all good now and its an amazing writer!
My brother in law bought a Montblanc at a yard sale for about $0.10. Then he gave it to me. It's pretty beat up on the outside, but it's still a great writer.
Wow, thats a sweet find! Like putting a dime into one of those old turn type candy machines and instead of getting 3 peanut M&Ms you get a Montblanc pen!
"Mango Chutney"! 😆 brilliant video. That was so good to watch. Great work on the nib too 👍🏻
Turned out wonderfully
Wow. Amazing. Great job. 👏🏻 you now have a pen that you always wanted. How cool is that. Same thing happened to me once. I saw a Parker 25 SS version and something inside me just went like: i want this pen. 2 weeks later I went to see an Antique collections show and on one shelf, there it was in all its glory: The Parker 25 SS version.. I bought it for 15 NZD. I was so happy i can’t even tell you.
I know exactly how you feel buddy! Pretty damn happy 😁
It is difficult to find any empathy for the original owner. He started his fountain pen journey with a Montblanc, while anyone knows you should gradually go there, starting with 5$ pens, then, not knowing anything about fountain pen, decided he was good enough to fix a pen, ending nearly destroying it.
Good job with restoration! Very interesting video, as usual!
"This is Germany, not Italy." 🤣Thankfully the clones have a totally different nib on them lol. Yours writes like a dream after the nib magic you used on it. Congrats again on acquiring a sharp-looking pen for an amazing price! 👏
It is a prized pen in the collection for the pen itself but also for the whole story & experience behind. Lots of fun!
@@Doodlebud Yeah, it's quite a story lol. Use it in good health, as we say! 😁
Absolutly amazing deal!!! Glad you restored the nib like you did and is now functioning great.
I got a pelikan 140 OB gold nib for 20€ which convert to 27 CAD which is a good deal but nothing like yours.
And once i saw a pelikan/chronoswiss m800/syloscope for 200€/270cad which is super rare but passed it on because i would never write with it and im not a collector...
Good score on the 140!
Heck yes, DB. Amazing find. I knew it was a steal of a meal with the real deal!
That was indeed good karma from the 146 restoration. Thanks for sharing, DB
"life is like a box of chocolates..."
@@Doodlebud 🍫Woohoo! What a find indeed! 👏❤
Good find! I was thinking of getting that one because it matches my Visconti by the magnetic cap. Subbed. Thanks for sharing!
If you find one for $20..... I HIGHLY recommend it 😁
I say this turned out even better than you could have imagined!!!! That’s one heck of a nib job you did there !
Same here!
2 years ago, Montblanc Meisterstuck 144 burgundy finish in exellent condition came into my hand from local marketplace with only $20. How lucky it was!!
Oh wow that's a great find 👍
Wow, I must have missed this one... . Nice :-) You did a super job figuring out why the nib got hammered in the 1st place, and then polishing the nib up where it LOOKS MAR-VEL-OUS ! Then you fixed the nib so it would write proper, so cool 🙂 (I'll have to view your video on how to fix nibs that are scratchy) Super job DB {U da Man Cho} 🙂
The bonus reverse writing was extra cool. Best $20 pen yet! 🤣
Wow, what a find!! Well done!
Crazy find
Imagine paying retail price for this LMAO. Same goes for anything montblanc. Good catch!
was about to comment this LOL
Haven't paid full price for any MB yet, but this was the best deal by a mile. They are really well built & great working pens in general I find. My MBs never miss, but the full new price to me is far too much. Hence I always have my eyes peeled for a deal 🧐
Congratulations! That is pretty awesome. I would add your work to the overall price. You're average pen user wouldn't get that kind of restoration result. Very nice!
Wow! Congratulations! I was so excited for this one when I saw the post in my feed. That was sometime in the middle of the night. Anyway. Here I am and I was here for it! Amazing story, amazing pen, restoration, and gift from the heavens for all of your good karma! Wow. I am very happy for you.
Hopefully one day, if I’m lucky, I will find some treasure too.
I have a question for you? What did you do with the nib to stop it from rattling like it was and being all bent? I’m assuming you reshaped it somehow. But how?
Looking forward to hearing about it. Cheers
Edited
Thx! Crazy random 1am find. As I polished the nib I did some "gentle squeezing" to certain parts just to manipulate the from a little bit here & there until it sat securely on the feed. Just like with polishing, a slow process making incremental gains
this was such a cool video to watch! i havent seen a restoration video before, so this was a great first one! im too scared to even try tweaking my twsbi eco 😅i can't imagine trying to do anything to a montblanc! amazing! (also that cap design!!! yikes!)
I'm glad this pen was able to have the nib saved
Wow! Such a cool story. Blessings from the Fountain Pen gods very well earned. :)
Holy moly I know this listing; I was looking at it for at least a week on FB marketplace and was a little suspicious about it, yes, all the same reasons you listed. Also I couldn't get to Vancouver anyway... Nice score.
Glad I got the scoop! Yeah nothing seemed right about it in any way.... but just had to roll the dice!
Beautiful, nice find!
Congratulations to this exquisite pen, landing in your likewise blessed hands at a steal of a deal!
An amazing story and a wonderful find!
Very nice work! 👏👏👏
Awesome video! I think you deserve a proper macro lens now!
Hey Doodlebud! What kind of microscope camera are you using to get a super closeup look at the pen? I would love to know. Thanks!
I have a link in the description
This reminds me of that Spanish woman who botched that painting, fresco restoration.
However here Doodlebud comes to the rescue.
good find. If I had bought it then I wouldn't have been able to restore it and so would need to pay for a new nib. Awesome!
There was no way I wasn't getting this thing to work!
My grandma said ..:If it’s too good to be true….: but my mom also said hope for the best prep for utter destruction
Epic - yes. Karmic - certainly. Congratulations, keep up the good work, and enjoy good fortune.
Great find on a killer pen! I'm waiting on some supplies to restore a vintage Montblanc Meisterstuck 144 from I bealive is the early 1950's. It has the telescoping piston. I'm going to have as much in tools and supplies as I do in the pen, but what the heck. Got the pen for around $170 USD. It is celluloid but it has a OB nib from the factory, (stamped on the piston cap with 144 on the opisite side) and it looks to be a fine nib. can hardly wait for everthing to arrive so I can restore it. It's only problem is the cork seal has gone bad.
New cork shouldn't be too bad to replace. Sounds like a sweet pen and their factory OB nibs are wonderful! I have a
MB24 with an OB & it's so good!
@@Doodlebud Thanks, I have many fountain pens but this is my first Montblanc and my first piston filler pen. A bit nervous about working on such a potentially expensive pen, but I've done many pens and bought the special tools so here goes nothing. LOL
You'll do a great job
You lucky, lucky Doodlebud! Well done on good instinct and a sporting attitude.
Gotta have fun. The hunt is the best part of it!
Amazing necromancy. What a work of art.
Congratulations on a great find. Looking at the Osprey description of their customised nibs, they give a description of a Zoom nib. This sounds to me like a Fude nib the way the line changes according to how much angle 📐 you use when writing with the pen . A very thin line @ 90 degrees versus a thick line at 45 degrees.
A Fude is like a Zoom to the extreme. The tipping ball is ground to accommodate the changes in line thickness on a Zoom. The Fude takes a completely different approach with the "bent nib" look to it
@@Doodlebud Hongdian make some very good everyday writers with Fude nibs. Probably the default manufacturer for fude nibs for me. They make a nice brass 1861 fountain pen with a fude nib.
wow! doodlebud this video was great ! thanks so much :D happy inking
Had so much fun finding out if I just scored the deal of a lifetime or not. Glad I was able to turn the nib into something special. I tweaked the reverse just a touch more the other night and its even better now. The italic on the reverse is so good! Total trick pen!
@@Doodlebud :) had a lot of fun watching the video and just nicked my homo sapiens nib whilst filling the monster pen ... scared for a bit then took out a nice light source, some courage and tools and repaired it. fun but scary :D
Terrific video, many thanks
Great video-I learned a lot. Which model Montblanc did this turn out to be?
As I explained in the video it is a Montblanc M
From where you have brought?
I inherited a Mont Blanc pen set. It looked unused and wrote ok but the nib wasnt split centrally which seemed to me quite disappointing. Anyway I sold it to a dealer who seemed happy and gave me a fair price.
I'm so very pleased for you! Well done. I really envy you that beautiful nib, what a lovely writer! Definitely karma my friend 😌
And I haven't had any luck like this as I've only recently started using fountain pens, maybe one day the ink God will smile on me
I don't expect I'll ever find a deal like this again!
Oh my! Congratulations
I got a Pilot Elite F nib in excellent condition at an auction for about $29.00 as I remember. They now sell new for about $135.00, so I did well on this one.
Solid find. I have a vintage elite and its one of my favourite pens.
I found this pen in Aliexpress, but with a standard nib. Please, can you inform where do you order your pen?
The one on Aliexpress is a replica. An original one has to be bought from a Montblanc dealer or in the 2nd hand market like I did.
Always loved your excitement about any pen Doddlebud!!! We can give you a potato pen, and you will still present it with gusto! Loved they way you break down the story and the technicals!!! LOVE IT bud!!!
Well I was pretty damn excited about this pen to see whats up. As soon as I grabbed it it felt legit so as soon as I got the kids to bed I went down and started working on this beauty! I probably wouldn't have been this excited with a potato pen LOL
I don't have any pen deal stories here, but I've always loved your restoration videos, glad this turned out to be real. How do I reach you, Doodlebud? I'd love to ask you something.
Sure send me an email at thedoodlebud@gmail.com
Congratulations!
This story is nuts. I gotta get out more
Doesn't quite beat your story, but I bought a Montblanc 149 Calligraphy (the original Expressive version) from a pen shop in Italy on eBay. It went for a bit over $500 USD, which was still a bit steep (and still currently my most expensive pen), but I figured I'd take a chance, considering what they were retailing for at the time. My worry was that it was used (although marked new), or even worse, a counterfeit. Turns out it was indeed authentic and NIB. They are apparently no longer available through MB, and I see used ones going fairly regularly for about $2k-3k USD online. Figure I made out pretty well!
Sounds like an amazing pen. There is some hate out there for MB because they are so expensive. And I do agree they are priced higher than what they should be, but they are great pens. I only have 3 MB pens, all are used, all I got a great deal on, and they are all fantastic. There for sure are other pens out there that are fantastic as well, but I really do love my MB pens for more than just the "prestige" of the brand and owning one.
@@Doodlebud Indeed... would NEVER pay retail for an MB, and in fact, was never very interested in them to begin with, as I'm typically all about function over form (the snob factor just pushed me away even more) but I did like the way the Calligraphy version seemed to write, according to reviews I'd seen, and couldn't help but take the plunge when I saw the deal! It has since become my favorite flex pen, although it can run a little dry after a while, but a momentary twist of the filler knob to prime the feed is all it takes to get it going for another session.
I will say that my Pilot Custom 743 with the FA nib and Flexible Nib Factory feed (my regular EDC) is a very close second, but just lacks some of the springy response and character that the MB has, and moreover, the ink capacity (although at half the cost of what I paid... about 1/5 of retail when new... those are small concessions to make, lol 🙄)
Great find. Do you think you should give the guy a little more because he didn't know what he had? Would tha tbe fair? I've never seen this model of Mont Blanc, but looks interesting. Kind of like what Lamy is doing to bring fountain pens to the masses?
Oh he knew exactly what he had. He bought it new for about $850
What microscope do you use?
I did a nib grind using the microscope system so can learn all about it in the video. The info about it is in the video description:
czcams.com/video/yVJ2HlZakf4/video.html
Congrats on your find. Where would I find a genuine Mont Blanc? What is the price or an entry level Mont Blanc?
Just go to the montblanc website. It will show you all models & authorized dealers
Congrats, DB! I was waiting for the drop, i.e. fake after all. But NO! The real deal. Wonder why someone would knowingly (???) let go of it for $20.
There's a long story I heard from someone else last night who checked out the same pen from the same guy a few years back asking $200 for it. "It needed a new nib" so nobody would bit. Price was widdled down to $20 to at least get something for it & I found it for the first time at like 1am on a restless night. Turns you the nib just needed some TLC 😍
@@Doodlebud You're at 1.8k views and I suspect that @ that number of fountain pen geeks are scouring fb
marketplace, today.
I don't usually use the word jelly, but I'm jelly.
I'm writing with it right now.... 😉 Such a unique feel from my other pens, the nib is exceptionally smooth and my best writer. I was at a pen meetup shortly after I fixed the pen and passed it to someone to try out. He travels a bunch and has an extensive collection of very high end pens. After a couple of strokes he stopped writing and looked up with me with wide eyes. Gave a bit of a "woah" and got back to writing. He finished off, passed it back, and just said "that is just fantastic!" This was such a strange ordeal finding, buying, and then working on this pen. I ended up getting more details about the pen as it was trying to be sold several years ago for more but nobody would bite since "it needed a new nib." I guess I found it when the owner was just done with it and nobody was willing to buy it so he sold it for how much the raw gold is worth in the nib. I turned out to be the right person to get their hands on it and get it working.
What you have is a Montblanc M fountain pen( the "M " stands for Mark Newsom) . The pen shape is as it is; the flat area at the end of the barrel is as it's supposed to be .....the one thing you can't do is post the cap on the end. The gimmick is The magnetic cap. You could have it fixed by a pen restorer and you still would be ahead. I liked the pen,but I'm a guy that likes to post the caps on my fountain pens and I can't do that with the "M".
That's a great pen for almost nothing. Great video again and i hope you have fun with this lovely pen.
Using it DAILY!
Really happy for you Brother
Thanks buddy 👍
Well then, congrats on the deal of the century - I guess you finally won that lotto ticket :).
🎉
I would take winning the lotto over the pen any day! 🤣
@@Doodlebud HAHA - same!
But at least this one came with a cool story attached to it! ;) :D.
Awesome dude.
Both of my sailors (profit light and pro gear) have this design flaw where they can catch the inner cap, but not a cheap zebra or a preppy?? Makes you wander why you pay so much only for the manufacturer to make it more likely for you to mess up the nib if its so easy and inexpensive to prevent
It's just a little detail that can be tweaked in the initial design stage. I always try to think: what will make this break & what will make it explode LOL. Just like with equations; when does it break down & go to 0 or go to infinity? Catching something like this can save one of those extremes from happening
@@Doodlebud I think they assume the cheap pens are going to be abused, so they idiot proof them, but expect nice pen to be cherished and babied, so not so much idiot proofing. You really gave to be rough with the pen for this flaw to bite you, but it is present on many pens. You could also catch the nib on the clutch of the cap in many a slip on cap designed pen if you went in with a weird angle.
im gonna tell my kids, and my grand kids, and my great grand kids.... "you kids got all the luxury... Back in my day we had to make our own pens out of sawdust and spit!!!"
crazy find!
Insane find! 🤣
I think I've mentioned to you this before, but nothing good comes from shopping after 12 am 😄 If it's not real, it certainly is a good fake, but from you showed, and me comparing it to pictures, the details do give it away, and should very well be an MB. Did you do the light through the resin test? Perhaps the fellow thought that with the damage, one would replace the nib, and that would cost as much as a used M, so maybe that is why the $20 price tag?????? Now you can add fountain pen sleuthing to your resume. Awesome find, and time spent on it. Congrats on that one, I think you deserve a beer.🍺🍻
Checked it with the light, but forgot to do it for the vid. Met a guy last night who knows this pen. Apparently the owner has been trying to sell it for a few years for around $200. But guess nobody would bite since "it needed a new nib." Turns out didn't need a new nib, just needed some TLC
@@Doodlebud So you saw the burgundy glow? Did you have a Pelikan Hub in Vancouver? I attended our last night. Pretty good turnout, got some Pelikan notepads, won a couple of raffles for a Tomoe River notebook and a couple of gift certificates for Wonderpens. Pelikan did give us any ink though.
@@ironmic9244 yup nice ruby colour, the same as in my other pens. There was a Pelikan hub event here but I wasn't able to attend
@@Doodlebud Whops I mean't Pelikan didn't give us any ink. You guys got ink? Because they said no ink this year. Or you talking about the color of the Montblanc resin?

Talking about the color of the resin. I wasn't able to attend the Pelikan hub. I've yet to attend any pen show 😕
Good find
Got my montblanc 164 and a vintage parker fountain pen at a japan surplus here in the philippines for ₱20 each... and found another mont blanc with the label 320, in burgundy though I gave it away to a classmate... Too late to realize twas a mont blanc
Really cool!
This is the pen equivalent of finding a lost puppy and giving it a good home. I’m so happy you “adopted” this Mont Blanc and made it work 😅
I'm very happy about it too! 😄
That kink in the nib could be tooling marks when the previous owner was messing with it.
Yeah there was a lot of wrong that was done to this nib. Glad I was able to get it working
Lucky! Awesome ✌🏻
☮️
Awesome Score!!!
Indeed it is
an 800 bucks pen for mere 20 - that's good, yes. but the geha-pen i used for 10 years in school, i found that *for free* in the school yard. it was nice, sturdy, smoooooooooooth... (too bad pelikan bought geha!)
Check the color of the resin under a light, its must be a very dark red and not black resin
Oh it's got that dark ruby glow 😍
amazing!
My sister got a pilot vanishing point from my grans house because we were emptying it. Gave my sister €1 and traded her a cheap pilot that’s probably ment for kid. Idk if that counts hahaha
That was a pretty slick move ;)
Can you ask the former einer what happend to the pen....lucky shot buddy 😅
Don't have anyway of contacting him anymore. I happily gave him the $20 and was on my way to fix it up :)
These are available for about 20$ new from a certain overseas marketplace.
Yes fake ones are, but those are not real ones
That could be an Aliexpress special. There’s a tonne of sellers selling that pen.
I'm aware that. That's why I looks for the details on the real & fake ones. Also there's other checks I didn't show. And also learned more about the pen from someone else who knows the seller. It's a legit MB
I once picked up a Pelikan 140 for 2 euro's and fifty cents
That's insane!
Found a MontBlanc Scenium Rollerball for 5 USD at my local Antiques Market. It is not a Fountain Pen and Scenium were their entry level line in the 90's, but it is still a steal.
Also found a 1930's - 40's MontBlanc 334 1/2 for 10 USD. It needs a lot of work as the piston is stuck and Tender Loving Care but it is still a win.
Congratulations!!!
Wow those are some GREAT finds!
@@Doodlebud I am blessed 😃 . Still have to send the 334 1/2 to restoration and probably will get a Monteverde refill for the Scenium (if I don't go the FrankenRefill route).

Wow, that´s nice. The rest of us has to buy these Montblanc M for $20 in China 😁. Or rather not...
It was one hell of a find
Had to laugh at how a cheap Zebra overcame a fundamental design flaw where a pricey Montblanc stumbled over its own feet.
