  • I saw these pens on Wish.com for incredibly cheap, and my curiosity got the best of me. I just had to know what sort of pens they were selling for so little, it seemed impossible. It turns out they feel like the McDonald's HappyMeal toys of pens, but they do write lines!

I've had it for years and recently i have been using it for stippling and it is absolutely amazing.
Its supposed to be a 0.5 but i doubt it, its much thinner.(thinner than a 0.2)
I just wanted to share. Cheaper products can be good too
Edit: im not talking about a fountain pen here. Just like a... "liner" type of pen.

I have buyed an expensive fountain pen but I was not really generous to buy nice ink. I buyed cheap chinease ink of 1€ bottle. Then for some time I was so disappointed because it taked a lot of time to the ink to come out and when I was writing fast it stopped. I was thinking this pen sucks! But then I asked myself... what if the ink sucks? I buyed English ink this time ( about 5€ the bottle). You wouldn’t believe the difference...suddenly the ink was not interrupting and I was writing all the time....and thinking what a moron I was... I buyed a 200€ fountain pen and ink of 1€. Sometimes cheaper doesnt work with fine mechanisms. But I use the cheap ink for a pen without fountain( feather) like in the old times. There you fill no difference at all.

@@adriangrigore228 the cheap ink is what people use generally for dipping. It doesnt have to flow well through the mechanism, so no nitty gritty engineering. just need to flow on a nib.
If by some reason you buy an expensive indian ink, you would find the case is the same with the cheap ink, even tho it's more expensive. just because the lubrication and the pigment is more concentrated.

Of course they have a profit margin, but that is the same for every big brand in almost every category of sales. Big brands use gold nibs, which cost more than steel nibs and the pens are often handmade. Besides all of that, they still have a big margin as you said, but it is a little more complicated than just a huge margin.

So a long term review on the knock off lamy safari. I bought three immediately after Peter posted this video. Of the three, one was missing the converter out of the box, another leaked so bad from the first time I filled it that it went straight into the trash (Seriously... It leaked insanely bad), and the third worked flawlessly. I actually still use the third one to this day and keep it in my backpack. I'm in nursing school and have to write a LOT. I fill it on average 1 to 2 times per week. My point is, the one lucky one has really held up. I use my Kaweco Sport even more though and it just feels nicer somehow... There's just something probably placebo effect-y about it maybe, or maybe it's the subtle little things like the logo on the cap or the engraving on the nib of the Kaweco... I don't know, but again to be fair one out of the three El cheapo pens still writes great and doesn't leak. Take this for what it's worth and enjoy.

The nib does wear out after around a year and does needs replacement, but that may be due to how much I use it. The nib replacement is quite cheap and can be done yourself. The piston consistently works and the pen doesn't get gummed up if you take care of it and clean it every once in a while. @matthieukiriyama7219 Před 5 lety +26

I would say that one big problem that gets almost always overlooked in review is the quality control. Lamy pens -as much as I don't personally like them- are known for their extensive quality control that goes as far as writing tests before sending the pens out. Quality control ensures that you will always get a perfectly good pen. By contrast, when buying a Chinese pen like a Hero 616 (which is a knock-off of the Parker 51), your best bet is to buy a bundle of ten and then get rid of the ones that don't work properly. It's a huge hassle, and generally a cheap pen like that requires a few other tweakings (for example sanding out protruding parts of the handle caused by the low quality of the molding process). Then, there is the issue of unforeseen design flaws that only become apparent with time and use. What do you think of ink actually leaking from the top of the cap because the cap is an assembly of three parts that can loosen with use? These problems gets overlooked because most reviewers only take one look instead of using the pen for a few months.

What i've seen is that people tend to handle cheap pens with (way) less care and then complain they break easily or have problems, while the more expensive pens are handled with care and are held in an ebony case with damascus hinges forged in the moonlight of the 5th chinese year and lined with silk of a thousand caterpillars. That's just not fair in my opinion. Most of the 'expensive' stuff we buy is only expensive because the shop owner wants to make money.

Now that I've watched many more of his videos, I know he is a wonderful weirdo. I gave my rather substantial (26) collection of Jinhaos away by now, but I kept the 9009 - it's a really beautiful and unique pen. Most of their products are either directly knocking off or inspired by other pens, the 9009 is a very classy pen aimed at the Chinese market.

The biggest problem with the Jinhao 250, and Jinhao in general, is essentially the quality control in manufacturing. I've bought 3 of that same pen, the Jinhao 250, 1 for myself and 1fir each of my 2 Daughters, and one caps securely and posts securely & the other two either cap very loosely or do not post securely at all, and it's exactly the same pen model. In the same way, one writes very smoothly, 1 clogs repeatedly & the other needed to have the nib worked to line the tines up better. So in essence you do get what you pay for w/ these cheap Chinese pens. I also don't think of them as drawing implements they're much more for writing, though you can certainly sketch with them, and after all you are getting what you pay for. Great review, thanks!

Aliexpress is like ebay, anyone can sell there and they want the profit from the sales, the customer care later is the last thing they care about. Good luck returning a product if disappointed or product came defective or not according to advertised, your product may not even arrive and the seller disappear to never be seen again. I recomend caution when utilizing sites like Aliexpress and ebay

Caution is always good to have. I speak from personnal experience as my sister had a problem with eBay, where the seller disappeared and she didn't receive the product, and ebay only gives you 30 days for refunding and to solve your problems, after 30 days they will not even try to solve your problem. And Aliexpress works in a manner similar to eBay, where anyone can sell through their platform and naturally their focus is on selling you stuff to get their profit, and helping you later if something goes wrong isn't the first of their concerns, therefore I recommend caution when utilizing sites like those

@O K Yea it definitely depends on how you want to use it. Comparably, one of the most utilized ballpoint pens for professionals is the dirt-cheap bic pen that costs the same as kids coloring pencils.. Price doesn't have to mean poor quality, and sometimes even a big name doesn't have to invoke big pricetag either. In the end the artist makes the work, and the pen only build on your natural abilities, and many of the cheap products can go a long way before they reach their limitations.

That jinhao was my first pen! I’ve had it for 2ish years now and I still use it sometimes. It dries out after a couple days of no usage so I have to dip it in water for a bit to get the ink flowing but overall it has help up really well. I take it apart sometimes easily to clean too. Love how it takes standard international cartridges. The grip is just a bit slippery for me though. What’s kind of cool is that some parts are made of brass, so you can see a little bit of brass patina near where the body screws into the section.

  • @maepple

    Nice review!
The thing with the cheaper knock offs is that you have to use them pretty consistently to get the most out of it. If you leave them sitting around for a few weeks because you’d rather use a different pen, then the cheaper material of the knock off pen will clog up and possibly rust/deteriorate. It’s harder to restore them because the nibs aren’t meant to separate from the body and the material they’re made out of aren’t very durable.
But hey, that’s just what I've experienced. :)

Yeah, I really agree with your sentiment. I've had a Lamy Vista (same design as the safari, just clear) for maybe 6 years now and it writes well, the pen is still in great shape. But I've also had a couple jinhaos, wing sungs, and moonmans - none were knockoffs (they were original designs) but they were still cheap. I mean, they *wrote*, and pretty well, but within a few weeks the plating began to wear off and the finish began to chip on the jinhao, and the nib on the moonman sprung after nothing as it appears the knockoff lamy did in this video a bit.
Still, I would recommend some more expensive chinese pens like the wing sung 601 and 698. More expensive, but made with better materials. Though it's best to save up and get something better like a lamy or whatever that you can really use for life.

The preppy is a pretty awesome little pen

I think so too! It's the Corolla of f. pens - it'll always get you there, painlessly and on the cheap.

I recently purchased a Chinese knock-off of a Kaweco Sport on Amazon and am delighted with it!
My :LeTianp is made of BRONZE (an option not available from Kaweco) and came with a pocket clip and converter for under $6.
A brass Kaweco Sport is in the neighborhood of $55 to $90.

I have several of that Jinhao model and they range from good to excellent writers and seem pretty bulletproof…
