- Step by Step!
In today's video, I'll be showing you how to Adjust or "Shim" an Electric PTO Clutch.
The process is quite simple, but you'll need these tools to complete this task;
A 1/2" Wrench or Socket & a set of "Feeler Gauges" (To measure the Armature Air Gap in Clutch).
Follow these simple steps & you'll be back to cutting grass in no time!

Even after 4yrs, your video is still being helpful! As many said - great teacher, straight to the point, THANK YOU for passing along your knowledge!
Great that you supplied us with the specs for other PTO clutches, nice simply repair and well explained. Appears this PTO had a lot of hours on it without being serviced.
Thank you for getting straight to the repair and information plus your advice. Time is important to everyone. Thank You 🙏
Well done! Very informative. You know your stuff. You give just the right amount of information without talking too much. I wish more videos were like this one.
Thanks for watching Paul!
I’ve just recently obtained a 1997 JohnDeere GT275 with the 17 Hp Kawasaki motor and your videos
on that motor have been great! Thanks a million and appreciate ya man!
Thanks much, I'm retired and cant spend a lot on my Equipment so try to di it myself. Your videos are great and really helpful. Thanx again
Im currently replacing a Collapsed Bearing in an Electric Clutch on my own Husqvarna Lawntractor, i stumbled across this video, I didnt know that adjusting the clutch clearances was even a thing, "Thankyou for the great Video" straight to the point with clear instructions 👌👍
I will now adjust mine as per your Guide. Much appreciated for the upload. CHEERS 🍻 🙏
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. My clutch on my Gravely 460 has been shutting off after 10-15 minutes of mowing for the last few months. It finally quit all together a few days ago. Between this video and the one on testing a clutch and a few other YTubers I was able to determine that the air gap was over .025" I tightened it up to .020" and it works like new! Saved me over $500. Thanks again
This is what’s happening to me …
Thank you for a very informative and straight to the point video.
Nice job man quick and to the point no mistaken how to get the job done thank you much for the information and knowledge.
Great video, straight forward, no BS, good technical info.
This is one of the best how to video I have seen....the speaker gets to the point and is not always going uhhhhhh...well done and clearly explained and illustrated...thank you
Thanks for watching!
You saved me 300$!!! I had just ordered a new clutch on Amazon for my Gravely Proturn, not even knowing these clutches were adjustable. I made one rotation on each adjustment bolt and BAM back in business. Thanks again!!!
Very good video. You have saved all of us from paying a lot of money for something that just needed adjusted. Thank you for your expertise and time!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for a clear, understandable, and concise lesson. I also appreciate your non-use of foul language.
Thanks for watching Thomas!
This is how you do a video....Very professional and informative. TY👍
Not a wasted word. Totally useful.
Thanks for watching!
Checked out your video and decided to try this. Worked out great! I have a 2010 Husqvarna RZ2454 with the 24hp kohler engine. With an OGURA pto. Took it off and adjusted the pto with a fueler gauge to .015 and worked out awesome. Beats buying a new one. We have a mower dealer here in Minnesota selling a pto for $225. Found one on Amazon for $130 took it off and tested the ohms which read 3.5 ohms so it was still good. Now I'm sitting pretty with ah fresh cut smell of grass in the PM lol. Thanks for the vid you saved me some dollars my friend. Take care and have a great day.
Awesome, glad it helped, cheers!
I just got true with a clutch job. My bearings were bad.
I got to check the air gap and tork the bolt holding the clutch. Great video man.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the very concise and informative video!
Outstanding video my friend. I came to YT looking to see if there was an adjustment for the PTO on my 20 yr old Simplicity, and I hit the motherload of information with this video. Very well done video!
Thanks for watching Dukerdr!
Same here with my 18 year yth2148, sometimes it wouldn’t engage when it was hot, thanks for the information
@Jackie Liner I have the same motor I just got what spec did you adjust yours too on that clutch?
Great video! Very helpful info presented in a professional and easy to follow way!
Dude, thank you so much. My wife and I were gifted a Honda lawn tractor from her family. It's an older tractor but in great shape, but one problem I've encountered is that it's hard to find info about fixing it or maintaining it. I have a shop guide that described shimming these things when servicing them, and mine clearly needs service because I could see a fairly substantial gap when operating the lever with the engine off, and no doubt the clutch wasn't making enough contact to send drive power to the belt. But not being much of an expert when it comes to automotive or machinery repairs, reading the service manual's instructions made the process sound so much more complicated to me.
Now, thanks to this simple explanation of the how and why of the process, I will have no trouble at all applying these instructions to my Honda's PTO clutch, using the shim gap specs from the service manual to get it just right.
To me, this is one of those great videos that really, really made my life better. You rock!
Thanks for the kind words, good luck!
That's a great explanation, I tell you that is just exactly like tuning up a drum.
Very good! Clear explanation and to the point! Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
GRT VIDEO....NO BS INVOLVED.....I have to do this to mine and didn't know about the different types and gauges, thx again
Anytime, thanks for watching!
Great, informative video! Very well made.
Great information never knew this. Thanks for sharing your superior knowledge & gift.
Thanks Chuck
Thanks for the kind words Chuck!
Awesome video. Watched several others. You were very detailed and to the point. Good teacher
Thanks for watching!
Great video, right to the point. Thank you.
Great video! The details much appreciated
I adjusted my Cub Cadet's PTO several years ago. I found your video to be spot-on.
Thanks for watching!
Great information, never knew they were adjustable. Thanks for sharing
Some are, some aren't. The ones that are adjustable are nice because as long as you keep them within spec, they tend to last longer!
Straight forward, very helpful video, thanks !
Thanks Andrew!
Dude, THANK YOU ! Finally a clear, concise "how to" video without all the extraneous BS some people include. Well Done @
Thanks, all my videos follow the same principle.
Great job on everything in the video 👍👍👍
Thank you for the info man. Awesome video. Thank you!
great job
this is a great video , nobody has done this adjustment . Nice to know .
Thanks Chris, as stated, the adjustment has most likely never been done on this clutch. Now that it has though, the rattling has gone away!
(Video series is finished, and I'll be posting videos as time goes on).
Great video. Thank you!
Big help thanks
Nice work bro. Thanks
The best video, you don’t waste any time and straight to the point, Thankyou

Thanks for watching!
Great video! 👍🏼
Thanks for watching!
Thanks.
Thanks dude great video
Thanks for watching!
Thank you, you are great!
Thanks for watching!
Just like a spark plug gap , it makes sense to have the gap set at the least gap. This is because as the material wears away , the gap gets larger. So therefore the set gap stays in spec longer if started at the smaller end of the scale.
Keep uploading.
Thank you
Outstanding!!! Thank you!!!
AWESOME THANKS BRO NOW TO ADJUST IT TO THE UNDER 25H.P SPECS.
Great informative video...I was able to adjust mine without removing it...
Good day I don't have pto clutch , but you do good videos. Thanks
Thanks Don!
Thanks for this video. It was really helpful. But, I tightened the same amount on all 3 nuts each time and then checked, until I had the .020 gap in all 3 places. I like doing things the easy, I guess. I just subscribed to your channel.
Thanks for watching!
Never worked with one of these clutches before until today and I had my john deere 240 clutch fall apart, 2 of the 3 nuts loosened and fell off and just happened to have a clutch on my old mower with the same springs and nuts. Put them on my clutch but didn't know about adjusting it so I just tightened it till it was tight then loosened it till it spun it with no noise. Went out and noticed it seemed to be slipping and bogging down the engine. Should I just adjust it with feeler guages or just throw a new clutch on?
what is a good way (brake cleaner?) to spray to pre-clean the airgap to assure accuracy in measurements?
thanks
I get how to adjust the PTO clutch but not why. Can you give me examples of what happens if it’s too loose or too tight? My mower is moving forward in its own & near impossible to switch gears due to the tension on the belts. Would a clutch out of spec do that? I replaced the clutch pulley & drive belts at the end of the last season so I’m not sure where to start.
I'm sure there are a lot of teachers who can not explain as well as you. I speak french and understand very well your explanations even if you do not breathe hahahahahahahaha! Thanks, have a good weekhend
I edit out all the breathing! Makes for a quicker video haha thanks for watching!
Well this solve my mower blades to have power again threw tall weeds ? I had a bad oil leak and only one bolt in my sears o turn 20 hp mower . Made a crack in oil filter and oil all over the clutch . I but 3 new bolts back to hold engine back right .(power wash clutch) I could of bought it used that way ! I put a new mower belt on to . The mower blades stops in very little grass . A few weeks ago it could mow 8 inch weeds with ease . All so times back my mower belt was burning some threw to tall of weeds ..thank you - please reply . I not paying over 140 for a new clutch and spent hours trying to find one for that price . Good video
I was cutting the grass on my John Deere la145 and the blades suddenly stopped. I can hear the pto trying to engage and i can even see the belt slowly turning the blades. Do you think it's an adjustment or a bad pto altogether? I appreciate the help
Thanks great information needed it before my anger got the best of me
Thanks for watching, best of luck!
On Husqvarna LGT2654 to adjust clutch, do I have to remove PTO?
Thanks
Genius
Ex what I need to know Thank You
I usually adjust mine to .012, or on worn PTO'S I adjust to .008. As long as it doesn't drag its fine.
Any advice to someone who’s pto is stuck on. I can’t get it to disengage! Thanks
If it is still making noise when spinning but you're well above the gap range do you make it looser still or tighten it down to specks and just let it rub?
Great video
Goede video
This is my problem also
Thanks for this info. Hihihii🤗
Thanks for watching!
My deere f935 is slipping and shutting of after a bit of work under load, hope this will save me a replacement, these go for 900usd +300shipping and tax 😬
Do you have to take the pto clutch off the mower to perform this service?
I just purchased a new to me Bolens 5019h harden tractor with a 2 stage blower. Owner stated he recently replaced the clutch and it looks brand new. Issue is when I shut off the blower it will coast for a good minute before it finally stops. It sometimes sound like I never turned it off but it does eventually stop. I am guessing my gap is too tight? Manual online states .015 is gap and my clutch has 4 bolts. I see two windows to check gap and it looks tight. Is this bad for the clutch or just unsafe? Do you think he assembled it wrong?
Wonder what you are supposed to do if you have a Ogura clutch on a 25 hp?
Huskee supreme gt 26/54the bolt snapped off in the crank and I need to take the engine off to change the oil pan gasket
what would be wrong with a PTO if it's clicking on and off while mowing ? ( after using till mower warms up )
I have a Exmark mower that engage the blades to the mower turns off
Not sure where the specs are from, but I adjusted the Ogura clutch on my Husqvarna with 26 hp to the 0.019 recommended in video. It was too close, and engaging clutch would kill the engine. I had to back off bolts and increase gap until the mower would operate normally. I need to check the gap to see what it is now, but the 0.019 was too close.
My mower just quits cutting after 20 minutes. Fluids full . I’ve ordered a new switch . Any other help does it sound like clutch issues ??? My mower huskavana 60 inch professional 5 years old
Good video...I have a Dixie chopper with clutch problem it engages for little bit then it quits..does this singtom has to do with the clutch gap? Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Not too sure, might be clutch pads worn out
the main magnet on mine is loose/ has play in it. So adjusting it has a problem. is that normal or is the PTO warn out and ready to be thrown out?
,would this be the reason why once my blades stop from reversing, they do not want to start up again..or after running for about 20 mins?
Excellent video. I have a question. My machine is a Cub Cadet. You say it shouldn't make a sound when turning the pulley. But I set it to 0.025 but it makes a sound when turning. Thank you
Ideally it shouldn't make a sound, but remember you may have it upside down so gravity pulls it a bit and things can rub. Try it it on the machine usually 0.025" should be good to go!
Hello - I have a Cub Cadet about 15 years old and when I engage the PTO it works fine for the first 1/2 hour, then it begins to delay engagement, then it will not engage at all until I let the mower cool down.
I took it in for service and they said it was the air gap and at first it seemed to work, then after the 3 rd use it went back to the above.
Any thought from anyone? The PTO knob was also replaced although it was not the problem.
I have a new Pto clutch and when I installed it per the instructions for the xtreme pto clutch the motor has resistance and does not want to turn over. could the adjustment be off fro. the factory? And on a 265 is it supposed to have a spacer in between the drive pulley and the pto? my old pto fell off and broke. I didn't see a spacer on the ground but maybe that's my problem.
There's usually a spacer in between the engine and the PTO clutch, and extreme sometimes also use a washer that is needed. I called them because I had doubts (it didn't seem like much surface area) but they assured me that's how it was designed to be run. Absolutely no issues on the one I installed here: czcams.com/video/lb_deDPQYt0/video.html
Great video. Beginning to hear @ slight rattle…don’t know if it’s bearing or it needs to be shimmed.
Fastastic video. Could save 100’s. Tay.
480 hours.
Well done. Can I make this adjustment on my 214, W/O removing the clutch? Is there clearance? Thanks.
Hard to say, some have room, others don't have enough room. Honestly, best to remove it, and use some nickel antiseize on the shaft so future removal is easy! Dielectric grease in the plug connector and you're good for years to come.
