This was actually my first car out of school. It was beautiful and I wished I had appreciated it as it deserved. Instead I wrecked it. Enjoy yours!

The best parts of each Volvo, together in one car -- exactly.

I just bought a 96 Volvo 960 sedan just like yours. It was one that had to many issues that the car lot sold it to me for $500 and told me good luck. It had a screw holding the rear door closed and a broken 1/4 window. I pulled the latch out and it was gummed up. I cleaned and greased it up and it works perfect and I found the window for $35 on E-bay. It also had a short, so the power mirror, passenger seat controls and the dash lights did not work. After 5 hours of pulling the dash cluster out and pealing back the wire cable housing, I found black burnt wires. I repaired and insulated them well. Now everything works. Even the heated seats. The only problems are the gas gauge doesn't work. I diagnosed it to be the sending unit in the fuel tank. Parts are not cheap for this repair. A used one from E-bay is over $200.00. Also the parking break cable to the right wheel has rusted in two. I'm sure the other cables are not fairing much better, However the cable run between the body and the sub frame. Not a easy repair. Otherwise it runs good and strong and drives like a dream. The body is straight, however the clear coat is pealing / flaking bad. Needs a good paint job. I'm falling in love with this car. It's becoming my baby. Hope to have her a long time to come.

I have a 95 wagon with the same engine and it has 290k miles on it. US model because I live in the US. Got it for a dollar, literally for a dollar. It’s not in good shape but runs well and I’ve made it my daily. Rear diff is loud on the freeway and the head gasket is leaking oil externally and the gas tank is is held in with ratchet straps but she’s awesome. Does badass burnouts and gets sideways. Sadly it’s an auto and suffers from rust issues but I’m still confident it could go on a 1000 mile road trip right now.

I just spotted this video I have a 1996 960 estate in the same colour the 3.0 24v straight six is a wonderful engine and my V70 R owning brother is amazed at how well it goes ... the 50 to 80 mph times are really good .. I love it!
It's smiles per gallon for me so the fuel economy does not worry me and it never fails to make me smile

oh how I miss my 95 960. Mine was mint!!! Perfect inside and out - even the door panels! It had a cd/tape player up front with the volvo CD changer in the trunk. I should have kept it b/c I will never find one in the same condition :(

Tested 960 3.0 with 444.000 km and 100.000 km. No difference in power. Does not feel like 204 hp :). But really good and comfortable car. The best of 900-serie.

I am driving my 960 (also 3.0 automatic) with 9.8 liters per 100 kilometers on long distance travels and about 11.5 l. on short range. It has got more than 300.000 kilometers and I fear the day I have to give it up. So I really pet it. Do oil changes evety 10.000 kilometers, try not to use it on salty roads....Had 240, 740, several 850, V70 Its like you said. Best of Volvo combined in one car plus mine is rather economic on fuel in comparison...

Peter Wolf, I totally agree and you are doing the best thing! I live in Canada and I have a 1992 Volvo 960 with 165,000 km that has never ever seen a single winter. I keep it garaged from November to April. I also baby it and it just rewards me with so much fun when driving it. Finding parts is a little challenging but once I do, working on this car doing most things myself is a snap especially the timing belt.

These cars are wonderful, though I don't agree that its the last true Volvo, P80s are the last Volvo made with no interaction from Ford. Ford had nothing to do with P2s design anyway but people will be picky about this regardless. P1s and P3s have an actual relation to Ford vehicles given so theyre what you can consider impure. Even the SPA chassis is still a Volvo platform where the CMA is developed jointly between Geely and Volvo.

I really want one of these. My 1996 940 wagon has almost every option possible on it but the 2.3L Turbo getting 0-60mph in nine seconds isn't very impressive and the solid axle is not very pleasant when cornering.

    • @kocaarik

Pretty good. Better than most other RWD Volvos. The lsd differential which is rare on Volvos makes it so you're less likely to get stuck. Also handles in corners better than a regular 940

It gets sideways AF. Sleeper drift monster. If you are a little on the feminine side and not used to the rear end kicking out and that scares you then stay away but if you like excitement in your life then this is a good option.
