- This is the second part of the #fenix PD40R V2 #flashlight evaluation. I was asked to provide a comparison to the TK 16 V2. The purpose of this comparison is to help those considering one light or the other to make an informed choice. I continue the discussion of strategic vs. #tactical lighting systems. The video provides a comparison of all the various modes as well as several turbo-vs-turbo comparisons.
This video was filmed at the LBJ Grasslands outside of Decatur Texas. Performance in a wilderness environment is important to me for my activities in night #searchandrescue. If you would like to see this comparison in a more urban environment - say a park or athletic complex - then leave a comment and I will make it happen.
All segments were filmed on-take (no retakes) with an #iphone 12 pro max.
Thanks very much for watching the video and I hope you find the information helpful.

BTW - Very good reviews. Thank you!
I particularly appreciate the real world reviews from an expert at finding lost ppl in all conditions.
thank you!
Always great reviews, you are my new favorite channel! Thanks
Thanks very much - I'll send you the ten bucks we discussed via PayPal :) :). Seriously, thanks. Many more are coming!
🇨🇵Merci pour tout vos comparatif, side by side , j'adore ✌️👍
Another great review! I always appreciate your detailed and controlled reviews... methodical yet real-world use information! I absolutely LOVE the beam profile, output levels, and color temperature of these lights! That said, while I completely understand your preference for the tactical interface, I've found the the PD40 v2 interface to be the best fit for me personally...as you stated, a great interface for non time critical applications. Also an EXTREMELY important factor for me, is that I keep my PD40 v2 near my back patio door for family use. Since the rotary interface is so intuitive, anyone can grab it and instantly start using it. This has been a huge problem with most of my other lights: family members will grab them and fumble around trying to figure out the interface... often giving up out of frustration, or worse yet completely missing out on the opportunity for the intended use (spotting wildlife, investigating noises, etc) due to that time spent. This is where the PD40 really shines (pun intended) and has worked very well for me. Thanks again for your exceptional reviews - I greatly appreciate them! 👍😀🔦
That's a very insightful and detailed analysis of use cases and matching UI to use cases, which I am sure will be valuable for others. Thanks for taking the time to leave your thoughts.
You give a very detailed review and it is definitely appreciated. I always know whether I want a certain light, or not, after watching your videos.
Thanks. That's exactly why I do these reviews - to help people make informed decisions. Glad it help you out.
I chose the 16 and a friend chose the 40. It really comes down to UI and how you want to use the light. They’re both fantastic lights.
agreed - thanks for your comment.
I had the 40R original version and sold it. I didn't like the beam on it. It was so large due to the low candela and the beam itself had a 4 way split in it, looked like a cross shape. I never considered the version 2. I got the 16 and love it.
Would love an entire video on tracking! Great videos, thank you!
Thanks - I'm planning on an introductory one during the daytime and then later this fall another on night trackig.
Nice comparison !
If you had to choose one of these two which would you choose?
Thank you. Straight up and no BS. I am much more a tactical light user, so if I could only choose one, it would be the TK 16 V2. I am, in fact, experimenting with a configuration on my ruck that has the 40 on the left-shoulder and the 16 on a retractable wire on the right shoulder. That kind of allows me the best of both worlds, and I can use the 16 for tracking at night - which I can not do with it mounted on the left shoulder as I've been using it for the last year.
I'm looking for a flashlight to carry around on some property I own in rural Louisiana. I want to be able to scan out a good distance as I walk my dogs at night as we have lot so coyotes, black bear and other critters that I have encountered before. A couple years ago a coyote almost took our small dog right out of my front yard. I am not an expert by any means on flashlights, so if you see this, could you recommend something? I want a light that has a good distance throw, bright and it doesn't have to be very small but I don't want a huge maglite sized flashlight either. I'd like something that will last 4-5 years and my budget is up to $200.
So, you probably want something with multiple modes that is good for 'walking' distances, but can be moved up quickly for longer distances. If you're walking dogs, you probably want quick, one-handed operation. If we stick with the Fenix brand, they just announced the TK20R V2.0, which is the same modes and controls as the TK 16V2 with the exception of 3000 peak lumens instead of 3100. However, the TK20R V2.0 has 56,600 peak candela on Turbo, which is better for identifications at distance with short bursts. You will probably 'make your living' on med. or high mode and quickly jump up to Turbo for short intervals. I have not, however, had a chance to use/review the light as it was just announced. Another way to go is to wear a headlamp and carry a single-use tactical light that is just for illuminating longer distances. I would recommend the Cloud Defensive MCH HC - 71,000 peak candela. I have two reviews on the channel. You can get the dual head model and have the ability to move between full illumination and an Admin mode. I use the single head as a helmet-mounted light. There are numerous flashlights that would work. Pay attention to the high mode as that's what you would use for sustained operation. Focus on peak candela more than peak OTF lumens. Turbo would likely be used in short intervals. Hope that helps.
@@L5-SAR agreed!! The only other light I would throw in there is the TK22TAC. 2800 lumens and looks similar to the TK16V2.
@@MemphisMojo15s Haven't had a chance to test that one out. Thanks for the recommendation!
@@L5-SAR I have been watching videos on it and I am highly favoring that light! I love the throw capability accompanied by the higher lumen output and the overall size of that light. I'm gonna get it and the TK20RV2 or whatever it is lol. I am definitely looking at them both.
@@MemphisMojo15s Go for it!!
Good Afternoon from a fellow Texan; I was wondering at what point do these lights become uncomfortable to hold in hand?
It's a bit subjective as I've been handling very hot (and cold) lights for many years. My general experience is that the PD40R and the TK 20R V2 (to which I also compared the TK 16 V2) are more heavily regulated lights - particularly the TK 20R V2. So, the 16 keeps kicking it out in Turbo mode, but after 30 secs to a minute, I would think that most people would find it uncomfortable with a grip that completely encompasses the flashlight with the palm of the hand. I tend to use this as a left-shoulder mounted light on my pack, so I don't really notice the heat. You can also switch the grip to hold it more with the first two fingers and thumb, but heat is still heat. Hope that helps.
Your reply definitely helps. Thank you for the review and helping me out!
@@nathan55000 You are very welcome. That's the primary reason this channel exists.
Trying to figure out what the best light that can stay in high mode the longest at 1000 lum without getting too hot, I already am getting the 16 V-2 also looking at the 20R V-2 and new P23I nitecore
The 16V2 will do a good job, but it will get hot. The 20V2 is too highly regulated for your requirement. Stay tuned ... I'm filming the part-1 review of the P23i tonight. If you're interested in Nitecore, you might also check out the reviews of the MH25S. Thanks.
@@L5-SAR
Thanks.. Looking forward to that review tonight.
@@tonydillinger2553 Filming will be tonight, weather permitting. Edit and post production followed by delivery will take a couple days. Hopefully by Thurs or Fri of this week. Thanks!!
@@L5-SAR
Will you do a beam comparison with 20rv2, 16v2 and p23i?
@@tonydillinger2553 That's an interesting one. Thanks for the suggestion!
Is it true you can’t use the turbo mode on the 40 if the battery is below 85%?
I've never run the battery on the 40 down to that point in order to test. Many high-lumen lights have that requirement, though.
Quest4Truth, yes, it is true. Not sure as to why Fenix did that. My TK16V2 and PD36TAC are both 3k and 3100 lumens and they run longer on turbo than that of the 40
@@MemphisMojo15s That 16V2 is a beast.
I can't decide between tk 16 v2.0 and tk 22ac which one should I get?
Do you need really long throw? The 22 Tac in tactical mode has nearly the same lumen output, but 74K peak candela. That's a brighter, narrower, much longer-throw beam. And, how often would you use it in Turbo? So much depends on specific use cases. Thanks.
I love the long shot. but I guess tk 16 will be better in daily life, right?
@@abdullahyldrm7861 I would think very carefully about actual day-to-day usage. Also, look at some other offerings from Fenix, say the C7. The best advice I can ever give someone is to fit the tool to the specific use case or cases. Don't buy something because someone told you to buy it and don't buy spec sheets. Buy the best tool that suits you, personally. Good luck!!
Do they use the same battery?
They both can use a rechargeable 21700. The PD 40R V2 can be used with an 18650, but it requires a battery holder that is an extra purchase. Both my models shipped with the ARB-L21-500U (orange color).
I had the pd40 v2 and sold it as it couldn't hit turbo if the battery wasn't 85% charged or over.
I sold my original 40R for the same reason.
That's annoying! Do you happen to know if that isn't the case with the TK16 V2?
@@MemphisMojo15s bad right
@@Bicki I would switch brands
@@Studat That's a bit of a non-specific tip. lol. I like the Fenix lights actually. I am looking at the PD36R Pro, the PD40R V2, TK16 V2 and the TK20R V2. But I am not set in stone to get a Fenix. Also open for other brands.
Marauder Mini was also on the list but heard too much complaints about the Wake-up function. Nitcore 20 IX is on the shortlist.
TK16V2 all day everyday...
I agree. The 16 and PD36TAC are my overall favorites for high output and with 5000mah batteries. The next favorite for EDC are my E35V3, E28R, TK11TAC, or my LD30-probably my absolute favorite for EDC
@@MemphisMojo15s people only need to see an episode or two of "adventures with purpose" to understand why every responsible adult needs to carry a powerful light w/ glass breaker every single day of their life.
