This video shows how the TK 30 can be used in both urban and wilderness #searchandrescue. For the first time, I filmed a review segment at Russell Creek Park in Plano, TX. If you would like to see an aerial view of this park, then here is a drone video I shot last year.

The name of the game is turning detection into identification. I normally use thermal night vision to do long-range detections. Without additional gear, I would have to invest a significant amount of effort in closing the distance in order to create a PID (positive identification) of the heat signature.
By combining thermal night vision, a magnified optic such as the #vortexoptics Solo R|T, and the Fenix TK 30, I now have the ability to make identifications many hundreds of yards downrange. This is especially valuable in lake searches where access to much of the lake boundary is not possible.
I also responded to viewer's request about how much abuse the light can take. I do not see much value in a full torture test or purposely pushing the light to complete failure. I did, however, work with this light for nearly a month before posting the review. I handled it and transported it just like any other light I use. I also re-created a scenario that represents the worst abuse I've put a light through since I've been involved in SAR.
How did the TK 30 perform? Watch and find out ... and you can subscribe for future reviews and community updates right here: / @l5-sar

this is the most professional review of a laser light ive seen to date. Clearly shows the upsides and usecases of the technology.
I have several laser lights and have to say the tk30 is still one of the best and definetly the most usable.
Doest come cheap but i can recommend it

Thanks. Yes, it's expensive, but for the right use cases, it can be well worth the cost. And, relative to many other LEP lights, it's still a great combination of form factor and price.

I've had mine for a couple years now, I love it. Yes, beam is narrow but that helps when looking through trees because you don't have the sidespill reflecting so you can see further. Yep, looking at object close up will leave spots in your eyes, very bright! I carry this and a HDS 18650 rotary, perfect combination for me. No need to carry a big ol' honking spotlight anymore, this thing has throw! If I want a ton of flood I have a Manker MK34

  • @jerryrocketandthegogogirls3517

I’m wondering why they don’t have a secondary lens that can slide into place that scatters the light so you could have a long distance beam or a wider beam for closer up. Seems like that could be the ultimate flashlight. Matter of fact I don’t see any manufacturers making focusing beams besides coast, (and I love their system) would love to see that in a fenix or olight

    • @ttss5726
      @ttss5726 Před 7 měsíci

Why would they? This light has a specific purpose this isnt your go out and hike flash light. If you need a wide beam then you carry a light with a flood also.

You were informative in telling us how bright your standard helmet light was. I like that. Then at 19:00 you failed to mention at what lumens it was which is what I was most interested in.
As far as abuse you should accidentally toss it somewhere down on a hard surface. That has happened to me a couple of times with all kinds of stuff and tells me how well it is made.
One thing I got out of this is that laser light is only good for very long distances. 100 yards or more.

    • @L5-SAR

400 LM combined flood/spot for the first shot and no headlamp for the second. I shot those two clips while I was filming another review. So, the narration was removed, which included the headlamp details. Thanks for pointing that out.

IMO, where you will start to see issues with drops, is after a light has heat soaked, it compromises the shock absorbing goo they put on some of the internals.

As far as i know the TK30 has a mirror setup to focus the Light (class 3) HT30R has a "shine trough" emitter (no mirrors?) Thats why its class 1, because of the different setup the Laser in the HT30R is a lot more powerfull (wich is why the battery lasts longer in the TK30)

Other than throwing a cool beam I cannot understand the purpose of these laser flashlights. I don't often find myself needing to light up a 2' circle at 100 yards.

    • @ric84

I want one simply for the novelty of it. However you could argue that it is the perfect light to use with binoculars, even tough i cant exactly think of a scenario where i would find myself needing one in the dark.
I can also imagine it being a good weapons light in certain situations if you're a high-speed low-drag operator since you don't blind yourself with the spill of a normal light reflecting off of things near you.
But since i'm the opposite of that i want one just to play around with and show it off to friends.

    • @ReallyEpicPerson

I really love this thing for exploring urban environments at night, because I can shine a light at a building without spilling out into the windows, which might alarm people.
Using this light up close on turbo, the light is actually intense enough that light will bounce around the room quite a bit. Not my first choice for lighting up rooms in close quarters, but it is actually adequate. Can also be the case in dense woods.
