    I've been a rider for over 50 years. Snell was THE standard with DOT being a distant second. No helmet should be polycarbonate (plastic) and you see why in the impact test. Helmets should NOT bounce, but begin to delaminate to absorb impact. You don't want your head to hit a post and bounce causing neck injury. A test we used to do "back in the day" is to drop them on the floor from 6 feet, similar to the impact test in the video. If they bounced they failed. If they hit the floor and stayed, they were typically fiberglass and did not bounce. DOT helmets would bounce, SNELL would not. The expanded foam (styrofoam) inner padding was the secondary absorption medium and would crush as it absorbed the head moving upon impact and also from the shell delaminating. One crash and throw it away. It did it's job. Good video but not in depth enough. Too bad about the fakes coming in from overseas now. Didn't have that problem not too long ago. My helments? Snell approved Arai. Got a $30 head, get a $30 helmet. There's a reason Arai runs $800 and up. Stay safe, dress for the slide, not the ride, and ATGATT. (All The Gear All The Time.)

    • @MK-hb3xc
      @MK-hb3xc Před 7 měsíci

      Bell created the "If you have a $10 head" advertising, all the while making a polycarbonate helmet of the Star design selling under the Vetter brand. The strap had Bell on it. They KNOW a polycarbonate can be safe. Bieffe actually passed the Snell standards in the 80s with a painted polycarbonate helmet, the paint protected the helmet against the solvents testing. Bell now has their popular MX-9 Adventure helmet doing great and meeting ECE 22.05 standards (probably will meet 22.06 eventually) and is a polycarbonate helmet.
      Back in 2005 Dexter Ford and Dr. David Thom proved out the polycarbonates were safe and actually would transmit less force to the brain in an impact than Snell and in some cases ECE. It's still true. The newest ECE standard didn't lower the forces to the brain in impact, they increased the speed of impact, now at the point where the speed would make survival nil. Especially in a street helmet.

    Go to a local shop that sells the bikes and the gear. You can talk to them too and ask questions, try on the helmets, gloves, jackets etc. and find something that fits you well and is comfortable.
    It's important for the gear to be safety compliant. It's also important that you can feel comfortable wearing it for hours on end while out riding.
    And stuff hanging off of a helmet, yes it's dangerous but it's also going to get really noisy at higher speeds due to bad airflow.

    If u want to stay safe - NEVER RIDE ON A MOTORCYCLE. 30 yrs. driving cab I witnessed too many nasty accident’s involving bikes & motorcycles. Not just aggressive motorcycle’s , the worst problem is bad drivers who do not look where there going. ✌️

      There is no such thing as completely safe. Yes, riding a motorcycle is more dangerous than driving a car, but driving a car is also inherently more dangerous than sitting at home and watching TV.
      My point is that life is about accepting risk; what level you're willing to accept is the only difference between a motorcycle rider and a vehicle driver. Yes, I could get hurt some day, and of course I don't want that to happen, but the tradeoff for that level of risk is worth it to me.

      true... but in the same breath, one could say "Don't drive a car, don't fly a plane, don't get out of bed." 😂
