  • Have you ever considered buying a motorcycle helmet from a website like Wish.com, eBay or Aliexpress? Neither have we. We wouldn’t ever dream of riding around with a dodgy helmet from one these websites, but we were very curious as to how well the helmets would perform in a crash test. For this reason we decided to ‘invest’ in some cheap motorcycle helmets from Wish/Alibaba and made an appointment at Arai’s testing facility in the Netherlands to test the helmets according to the official ECE drop test and the DOT penetration test.
    Apart from the shocking crash test results there are a couple of other dodgy features that we found on the helmets. In this video we discuss the aspects of the real and fake Arai/AGV helmets. The counterfeit skidlids took two months to arrive and that’s not all.. We ordered 5 different helmets in total and ended up receiving only 2 of them.
    Are you curious about helmet visors falling off constantly? Inner shells consisting of two separate parts? DGL helmets (or DQL helmets) disguised as AGV helmets? Then what are you waiting for? Get stuck into this video and let us show you what to look out for in fake and dangerous motorcycle helmets.
    0:50 - Ordering helmets from Wish.com
    1:32 - Comparing a fake Arai helmet and a fake AGV helmet with genuine helmets
    4:34 - Travelling to Arai’s test centre
    5:39 - ECE motorcycle helmet drop test

    Do yourself a favour, don’t get your helmet from Wish or Alibaba. Keep your head safe and well protected, as you have only got one. Head over to FortaMoto.com and check out our full motorcycle helmet collection here:

    I always buy Simpson helmets these days. There are better helmets, I’ll be the first to admit that. The features tend to be limited, and they don’t offer many of the features of more specifically motorcycle-focused helmet manufacturers.
    That said, I find them comfortable, stylish, minimalistic and they have a Snell rating (which I don’t trust DOT, so I usually shoot for stuff with an ECE or Snell rating).
    That said, my only complaint about my old Arai is I wish the viewport was just a little wider (top to bottom). I usually ride in heavy traffic and being able to see, even just a little bit more, saved my butt on a few occasions.
    I wore my Arai for over three years and like 45k miles (I’m hard on my helmets as I’m a commuter who tends to do everything on my bike) and it was a great helmet! I would buy another one, but I do wish they’d open them up just a little for their full-face helmets.
    Anyway, I always enjoy watching these videos as they’re a great well of information on what to look for.

    (If you come comment “oh would you put your life at risk using those?” The answer is yes. Everyone would, cause nobody here has money to buy a real arai or bell helmet even if you find them for sale)

    The only way I buy gear is from Cycle Gear, as that is the only motorcycle gear and parts store in and near me in Ga. I only buy name brand Shoei as it is the only one that fits my medium oval head. I don’t care about the $700 plus price tag. My head is way too important. Just like my gear, I bought the KLIM Kodiak jacket and pants for $1800. I only buy high and reputable quality.

    The ECE 22.05 requires no "Shell Penetration Test" like DOT or SNELL - which of course you know.
    BUT: as Arai is proud of it's very hard outer shell and it's minimal flex (which you demonstrated by standing in the helmets) I guess that's why this test was included ;O)
    Nevertheless, quite entertaining video although I wouldn't have bought my helmets from sources like this anyway.

    • @FortaMoto
      @FortaMoto  Před 4 lety +3

      Spot on! The penetration test was included because it's part of the DOT and SNELL tests, and because we believe that it should become part of the ECE test. Thanks for your compliment, and good on you that you wouldn't get a helmet from there! Neither would we, except for scientific purposes.

    • @krollpeter
      @krollpeter Před 3 lety +1

      The ECE tests simulate hitting the road or a car, a blunt object. Hitting a sharp object can happen, but it's not the common incident.
      Optimizing a helmet to withstand such a penetration test means it has to be optimized for hardness, which then results in compromises in the dampening area (g-value and duration of the impact). That means helmets which can withstand a high penetration force can not be as good as possible in the dampening department. Most important are the highest dampening values which means lowest g value and shortest duration of the impact peak.
      This is why European helmets optimized for impact with blunt objects all undercut the Arai results, and that often by a lot.
      Our motorcycle helmet do not need to be like a construction worker helmet. I hope the European commission will not change the system, because the brain is more sensitive to harsh accelerations or decelerations of long durations, than anything. The penetration testing is old school, overcome.

    i suppose Arai or AGV has tried to take these guys to court, and failed, because in China there is nothing such as trade marks or patent rights.
    I only wear Schuberth helmets, as they are very very high quality, although not as well known as AGV, ARAI or Shoei (thanks Rossi, Doohan & Marquez for making these brands famous), so not a brand for these fake artists worth to copy.
    Also, i don't know about these famous brands, but Schuberth encourages you to register your helmet on their website, with it's serial number, to ensure it's authenticity.
    Guys, if your safety is of importance to you, pay that lot of extra more and get the real thing. if you can't afford the real thing, go to a dealer with a good reputation and buy a less expensive helmet, but that you know is the real deal. Shark, AGV, AIROH etc has all got good quality helmets, for a person that's on a tighter budget.

    am i the only one who was waiting for the genuine pista to be tested?

  • @rbfclaboratoryandstudio

    Why were results of only 3 helmets subjected to the tests shown? Why were those of the Genuine AGV helmet left out?? Or if it wasn’t even tested… then why?
    Even though I only consider buying and wearing expensive, highly-rated helmets myself, a good “FAKE” helmet is MUCH better than having no helmet at all.

      I'm afraid we don't have spare AGV Pista's laying around. If we did, we would have definitely tested them for you.

    I will certainly share this video on my socials accounts.

    Even these are better than no helmet...like many riders in Usa sport.
    It all comes down to what level protection you want and how much you can afford im not paying any company 600 or 800 u s dollard for a helmet. Ridiculous arai shoei....

    • @FortaMoto
      @FortaMoto  Před rokem

      That's true. Although, anything would be better than no helmet. I'm not sure the insurance companies would agree when it comes to a survivable accident with an unsafe helmet, though. That could be a very costly and would quite possibly leave the rider with permanent damage. All Arai and Shoei helmets are handmade, hence the higher prices. Safe lids can be found for half the price or less, but with lesser materials and options.

      Every vendor will tell you once you drop a helmet you should either send it for inspection, or throw it away. That's right, even a $ 1000 helmet.

    • @LMO169
      @LMO169 Před 2 lety

      @@krollpeter Because they are vendors. A regular drop from hip high does absolutely nothing to a genuine helmet. If it can't take that 13kph drop, how should it withstand a crash at much higher speeds? I know people who slid off while riding, sent their helmet in to the manufacturer for inspection and and it came back with a certificate for further safe use. If the shell doesn't show any cracks or dents, it's fine

    • @FortaMoto

      This is not true. A $500 helmet will typically be made from fibreglass (at the least) and can be used for up to around 7 years, if treated well. A polycarbonate helmet will cost you much less than $500 and will last you 4 to 5 years, if treated well.
