- When people are asked how do they picture our planet in 50 years, grey images of destruction and desolation seem to be the best representation of what comes to their mind. Elena Bennett has a different idea in mind. She thinks that, in the future, we can have a more just, more prosperous, and more biologically diverse planet than the one we are living in today. Together with other scientists, Elena has identified “seeds of good Anthropocene”, that is, the actions that are visible today and that are starting to change the course of history in a positive way. They exist. And if we want to build a better planet, we need to start looking for positive stories about the future, even if they are hard to find. It’s like driving a car: if you have a certain image in your mind, you will steer your car towards that image. If it’s a bad image, you are likely to get a bad result. At the end, it’s our choice.
Elena Bennett is Associate Professor at the McGill School of Environment of the McGill University. She earned her Master of Science in Land Resources from the University of Wisconsin in 1999, and her PhD in Limnology and Marine Sciences in 2002. As a postdoc, she helped coordinate the Scenarios Working Group for the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. I'm not worried at all about our species future. Either we change our ways and secure our future as a part of the world, while benefitting the planet as well. Or we don't and cease to exist. But either way this world will go on. And that's a comforting thought.

Less talk, more action, don't judge others, show them what they can do by being an example. And the world just might look like the fairy tale one 😎

Absolutely great talk! The part about the self-fulfilling prophecy has probably much more impact than most people realize. I really love that there were now multiple talks directly concerned with the future of our planet and how to make it sustainable. The "SDGs in PBs" talk is imo one of those more concrete approaches to look at the way instead of just the goal like she said.
This was an excellent topic.
Ever since at least 1980, We the People of planet Earth have had the capability of providing the highest quality of food, the highest quality of clothing, the highest quality of shelter, the highest quality of healthcare, and the highest quality of education for each and every man, woman and child on the face of the Earth, and to do it in such a way that was in Harmony with Nature. We already have gazillions of practical creative solutions that have not been implemented yet.
Here in New York City, we are building a Majority Voting Bloc of at least 1 million individuals (a measly 20% of the electorate) who are well-informed, free of disinformation and misinformation, on all the major issues of today AND devoting their time, energy, resources, and talents to the political process, esp the campaigns.
That is all we need to win the Mayorship, at least 2/3 of the City Council, at least 2/3 of the Congressional seats, at least 2/3 of the State Senate seats and at least 2/3 of the Assembly seats.
We will make sure that only the most Loving/most Wise among us become our public servants.
We will change the laws and implement the gazillions of creative solutions we already have on a grand scale and make NYC a model of what's possible in the world today.

@Bel H. If we figure out how to do it correctly (not ruining), we can apply it to Mars, even if we can't on Earth since we'll be starting from scratch. Also, we'll have to do a lot of terraforming before we can ruin much.

Interesting, but a bit of what has already happened with the "sustainable development" paradigm: Good in theory, extremely difficult to achieve in practice. Humans look for their immediate benefit first, always and by all means. It is deeply in our genes and evolutionary history,

Some good content here but a word of advice. If you really want to inspire people, you need to connect with them and using highly academic terms like “anthropocene” is probably not going to get you there.
to be fair this was at CERN, perhaps one of the most academic places in the world. If Elena was speaking to a different crowd, I am sure she would alter her approach according to her audience.
