  • Before Larry McReynolds was the crew chief at Robert Yates Racing he proved his skills leading the team for legendary drag racer Kenny Bernstein's NASCAR team. King Racing originated in South Carolina and moved to THIS building for the 1989 season! 35+ years later the place has not changed very much and Larry has not been back inside since 1991! We go inside with him to hear about how the place worked, stories about working with Ricky Rudd, Brett Bodine, and some funny things that happened back in the day!

Race cars end up in museums and the buildings they came from are often forgotten. I’m glad we are able to digitally document these places for future generations to see. I also feel like there is something special about hearing stories where they happened. What do you think?

Well the buildings are an essential part of the story, since obviously without a shop, it becomes much more difficult to do everything to get the cars together in order to get those cars to the track.

Yrs ago I worked in CART (IndyCar now) w/ teammates that worked for Kenny B. and they always had great words to say about him. The major thing about Kenny is that he was groundbreaking with the green “business to business” B2B philosophy of gaining sponsorship, w/ both his Nascar, Open Wheel and NHRA teams. Larry made my wife's day by putting her one of the show cars and started the engine, I have not seen her so frightened before or since, she almost jumped through the roof from the exhaust noise. It turned in to a complicated situation, against my will I shouldn’t have done it, but I trusted his word and respected his situation and he never let me down. Most people when they achieved success, become self centered, conceded, or arrogant and ignore the little guys in the sport, Larry Mac has always stayed true, very respectful and humble, I’ve always admired him and respected him because he’s never forgotten where he’s came from. Awesome video, Larry Mac is so fun to listen to! I was hoping you would ask him about his cameo in Days of Thunder where he is immortalized with the Kenny Bernstein Quaker State team in the opening credits and the great Hans Zimmer score. Larry’s vintage pit crew shirt is top notch, I’m surprised NASCAR doesn’t sell replicas of them, they’re just leaving money on the table. I would buy so many of them from different eras, they’re so cool! I’m glad he mentioned Ricky Rudd’s win at the inaugural race at Sears Point. Rudd won twice there, 1989 and 2002, he was one of my favorite drivers and I’m so glad he made the hall of fame this year.

We had stopped on the side of I 85 and were chatting when a vehicle pulled over in front of us.The driver said that’s Larry our crew chief. I said put your hands behind your back like you are hand cuffed. Larry walked up to the passenger said and I rolled down the window and the driver said “I need $1500 dollars or I’m going to jail and the truck will be impounded. Larry was speechless until the driver started laughing. Keep up the great work on these videos.

WOW!!! As usual you two bring us the BEST stories and history of NASCAR and racing in general. Thankyou so much for that. And being said, here's one for ya's both.... Track down the story of A.M.C. in NASCAR and S.C.C.A. Probably be daunting as a task I'm sure, but if there's any team out there that can do it, it's Stapleton!!! Never doubt your task, never doubt yourselves..... you two are truly nailing it. Again, Cheers from Tillsonburg Ontario Canada(if you get a chance, check out Stompin' Tom Conners... Tillsonburg song). That explains it all. The Carolinas ran shine in the day, we ran/run Tobacco. God Bless, T.

Larry McReynolds is outstanding. An excellent video of his journey in the early years. Some things I remember like yesterday. Many things he explained I never knew. He is one genuine nice guy to take the time to meet you, and explain everything. Thank you Mitchell and Logan for putting together this incredible video. I know it takes time and effort, but this was an excellent video. Definitely a Daytona 500 win here.

I worked for Brayton Engineering in Coldwater, Michigan back in the early 90s. We built the Buick Indy V6 engines for King Motorsports.
They won the Pole and Indianapolis Motor Speedway track record for the 1992 Indy 500. Kenny did everything right with his Indy Car program as well.
Larry talks about the cars that GM provided to the Race teams and for us it was a pair of loaded Buick Roadmaster wagons (with wood grain as well).
These days, I am a Plastic Injection Mold designer in West Michigan but I sure enjoyed my time working for Scott and Lee Brayton.
And working for team owners like Kenny Bernstein, John Menard and others. Those were some great times.

@@Fatboyeethat Pole winning 4 lap track record in 1992 was 232.482 mph. The 4 lap time came in at 2:34.851.
Yes much to our dismay Roberto wasn't able to control the 900 plus horsepower we gave him and the 55 inches of boost allowed
for the Buick. In Guerrero's defense, after a sweltering month of May, the temps that day were well below normal and the traction was poor.

Very very enjoyed watching this video with the history of Larry Mac back in the 80s. I remember the Quaker State car and seeing it race back then as a kid. It very exciting to learn and see all the history of racing back then. My uncle drove his car up in Agawam Ma when it was Riverside Park. Going back to when King racing, Yates Racing, and even when Larry was at DEI what an amazing history and gentlemen of the sport of racing. Even have friends today that Larry may know in racing. Even today Larry Mac is still an amazing knowledgeable guy with all the changes over the coarse of the years still a stand out of knowledgeable young man. Thank you for the video and the to all who spent time making this history of the sport. Very appreciated, thank you.
