For several months in the late 70's I worked on what we called at the time a "sled" group. We basically did the same job, completely rebuild the road bed and replace bad ties. It took two locomotives to pull the sled that pulled up the track, ejected bad ties, ect until laying down behind the sled. Very impressive operation to have been part of.
