Lyrics:
Come wayward Souls,
Who wander through the darkness,
There is a light for the lost and the meek.
Sorrow and fear,
Are easily forgotten,
When you submit to the soil of the earth.
Grow, tiny seed,
you are called to the trees.
Rise, 'til your leaves fill the sky,
until your sighs fill the air in the night.
Lift your mighty limbs,
and give praise
to the fire.
O potatus et molassus
Si velis eis quaere a nobis
Lenes et caldi valuti catuli
Plene cum petri dulcibus
O potatus et molassus
Si velis eis quaere a nobis
Lenes et caldi valuti catuli
Potatus et molassus
Grow, tiny seed, you are called to the trees.
Luckily the beast didn't meet the highwayman who makes ends meet just like any man who works with his hands
Came here to cry.
Leaving with a smile.
Thank you kind stranger!
If you cross his path...

The imagry shown is quite a sombre reminder of what would happen if the boys ended up lost to the depths of the wood. We of course enjoy the charm of the story and the beauty of the woods, but let us not forget that it is not for one to linger lest it creeps, grows and slowly entwines you as many before.
The Unknown, beautiful but deadly alluring.
I never thought anything could make a song like "Potatoes & Molasses" sound creepy, but...here we are
Imagine being in the studio recording this and a tear coming to your eye as this singer digs into their heart to perform and then you remember their singing about mashed potatoes
And molasses. It's not the same without them 😂
The fact that this is a 10+ age rendition of Dantes Inferno is so awesome!
If this was Inferno, they would be in hell. No, this is truly Purgatory.
@@treyowen9213 Dante’s purgatorio is in fact a thing
I think the inferno read is an interesting one and has some evidence in favor of it for sure. But, I don't think he intended it to be anything that straight forward or definite. It works on many more levels than just a retelling of Dante's inferno.
@@treyowen9213you can easily make the comparisons of each episode to a layer of hell although it of course is kidded down. Even down to the place they meet being a frozen forest where those who give up are turned into trees and that is where the beast resides. In the inferno the last layer of hell is the forest of suicide which is a frozen lake/forest of those who have given up and are eternally damned as part of the trees with satan being confined at the very bottom of said lake
On the Vinyl record, the transition between the 2 is about as smooth as this
I've been thinking about the beast for quite some time and just exactly what he might be
It's entirely possible from what we know from what the show tells us, that the beast in the show isn't the "only" beast nor is he the first
Which leads me to think that judging by the dynamic between the lantern bearer and the beast itself, the beast is not immortal, he will eventually die (at least his corporeal state will) at which point the lantern bearer will become the new beast
What this means is that even though it would seem like the soul of the beast is in the lantern, the lantern is actually a vessel for the part of the beast that is truly immortal, and the part that needs to remain intact in order for the mantle to be passed on, it is for this reason that the lantern needs to remain lit, so that upon the death of the current beast, the lantern bearer can take up the mantle and be able to find a new lantern bearer (which it would have plenty of time to do since the beast could have an insanely long lifespan)
Basically, the lantern is like a horcrux for the beast, and without it, the beast would be a fully mortal entity.
The beast is the amalgamation of all the lost souls that never made it out of the unknown and suffered a fate similar to the impending one Greg was trapped in.
*His appearance is the signaling of desperation and hopelessness.*
A feeling that personifies the empty shadowy winter night in which takes place a tragic Death of innocence.
The lantern is a lantern, but it's the hopeless and desperate idea that by feeding the lantern the woodsman will be reunited with his daughter, when she was alive all along that attracts "The beast," which is spotted by all townsfolk, and civilization.
But the woodsman is isolated in Beatrice's mill, so became ensnared in the lies the mind tells itself when its afraid and unsure.
The concept is there is nothing but fear itself.
How to kill him simply
Put the lantern on the ground
Or the beast is just a lich or an avatar of death since both have their souls bound to an object
Considering how he never forces people to obey him and instead convinces them that it is in their best interests to do what he says, how his end goal for his targets is to make them "give up" and "surrender" to him, what happens to those who do surrender to him, and how he calls what he does to them "a light for the lost and the meek", I believe that even if it is not quite his true nature, then he is at the very least an allegory for depression and suicide - specifically, he embodies the moment where you are in so much pain, either physically or emotionally, that you can no longer see a way for you to ever live happily again, and so you instead turn to an option of escape that should normally terrify you so much you would never even consider it (Death), yet at that moment - that singular moment where you truly lose all hope - it has become your only salvation.
he lost the lantern to the woodsmen and was trying to get it back for himself and trying to keep having the woods men light it before he gets it back.
I kinda think come wayward souls and the idea of the lost souls becoming trees in general could be interpreted as a metaphor for suicide: "sorrow and fear are easily forgotten when you submit to the soil of the earth". And in Dante's inferno which this show is based off of the souls of those who committed suicide were trees in the afterlife. Thinking of it that adds a whole other layer imo.
1:40 Can you imagine if Wirt didn't ever make it out of the water? Both would be shattered by the loss of the other, but Greg living on feels even darker than the opposite considering his personality.
