How to play Silent Hill in 2024 (4K+ & 60fps)

- A few additional tweaks you may want to make use of :-)
• Under Enhancements - Force 4:3 for 24-bit Display (This shrinks cutscenes down to their original 4:3 aspect ratio)
• Under Display - Setting the Crop to All Borders and the Position to Center can fix a little black sliver on the right side of the screen (hardly noticeable, but I figured it'd be worth mentioning)
PGXP Settings WILL cause the game to freeze/hang/crash at the following locations/events:
• Upon completing Piano puzzle in Midwich
• Upon entering School Bus near Midwich
• Inside Bridge Control to East Silent Hill
• Upon entering Church to meet Dahlia
• Cutscene where Harry uses the Flauros
You MUST briefly disable all PXGP settings in order to progress!
If you don't see the 60fps code for whatever reason, you can manually enter it using the ADD CODE button or import it using the file at this link:

For anyone still having issues with the game freezing in the church, try ticking the disable all enhancements option in Duckstation's advanced menu. It allowed the game to continue the cutscene temporarily.

@@armaansingh9472 Yes, I believe Duckstation, as it is with every other emulator, has the ability for you to play it with a keyboard. However, it may not be as good as playing it with a controller. Your mileage may vary.

For texture filtering you're gonna want to use "Bilinear (no edge blending)", not regular bilinear, or else the tree leaves textures are gonna have an odd white outline around them (it might affect more stuff, but that's what I noticed and changed it from that point on)

I am playing through all SH games in chronological order. Just finished Origins on the PS2 emulator on my phone, time for the one that started it all!
When i start the game it gives me "Please insert PlayStation CD-ROM".

I didn't have any issues on my end. I'm using CHD format files. But .cue/.bin should also be working just fine. You should delete everything and start over. You probably clicked on something you were not supposed to.
awesome, i downloaded duck station, but the settings just didn't feel right. I cant believe how smooth this 25 year old game looks now, its absolutely insane to see.

UPD: if anyone is stuck on church cutscene glitch, try turning off all tricks from this vid, like widescreen, upscale and 60fps cheat and changing rendeder to software. Worked for me

It's because of the PGXP correction setting, he mentions it as he enables it
@@unsavourylittlerunt Can't just be that. The church crash happens for me regardless of those settings being turned on. I'm thinking it's something else he happened to have disabled and thought it was PGXP.
EDIT: For anyone having issue still, once the paused/freeze happens, try heading to the advanced options for Duckstation and ticking the disable all enhancements entry. For me, it completely unpaused it and allowed the cutscene to continue.

@@unsavourylittlerunt Yeah, in my case I found the PGXP toggling wasn't working regardless of what it was set to aswell. It's like it wasn't reading the config file correctly. After updating Duckstation and using the toggle hotkey method just now, it seems to be doing the trick. Tested it out on the bridge control room which is a guaranteed freeze once you walk up to the window.
Thank goodness for emulator save states because this would 100x more frustrating than it currently is.
how do i get the ps1 bios folder?
This game is not designed with widesceeen in mind and I don't believe that panning out the view along with stretched UI assets is really "definitive", also turning off dithering absolutely blows out the intended look, I'd rather have the color depth lowered.

Main problem with duckstation is FMVs decoding is buggy. It's very blocky and grid like. For the game itself it works great. Retroarch with mednafen/beetle is overall better imo
I’ve used most of your settings except overclocking and 60fps, selecting 60fps killed a full screen mode by creating black frame all around. And the only way to get rid of it was to reinstall duckstation. On my laptop PGXP doesn’t make game to freeze is an aspect ratio, so I have to switch back to Auto Game Native before some cutscenes and then I can go back to Full Screen mode again. Otherwise the game will freeze.

Man I'd just like a video on how to make it look as "bad" as possible.
I tweaked around with some shader settings and I'm delighted that I can emulate a CRT look especially with NTSC but I just can't get it to look perfect.
Oh well, I guess I'll have to work it out myself, regardless good guide on how to make it look as good as possible.
Says the biggest favor anyone could do is let others experience silent hill too. Man is a true silent hill protagonist in real life.

I cranked that baby up to 16x on an i7 960 CPU with a GTX 1660 Super. Looks amazing. I'm surprised how well optimized duckstation is. I can run it on my 13 year old PC on max settings.

this is spectacular I was playing with the game square mode with black edges all noise on the screen and the extra crap, I stopped playing the game because i was hating it, now I think I'm actually going to complete this game after this improvement
imagine playing a ps1 game with 64 gb of ram and new processor etc without enabling this stuff
@CZcamsITA I would be that guy. At least the aspect ratio setting. The game was made for a 4:3 aspect ratio. Forcing any wider aspect ratio will display stuff that's not supposed to be seen, but that's just me. 60fps and suppressing geometric wobbling are definitely things I'm enabling though.
@@ttenor12 I think you dont see more than you are supposed to, I think it is just streched so maybe it is a bit distorted, or am I wrong?
@CZcamsITA the purpose of the widescreen hack is to avoid distortion. When you force widescreen without a proper widescreen hack on a game that does not support it is when it gets stretched.

I have some sound problem..when radio is on and I kill monster the warning sound don't stop..it appears even when I go into another room..has anyone had a similar problem and knows how to solve it?
im new to gaming, so sorry if there is an easy fix to me question, but i followed everything you said and now i am stuck in a screen that says: silent hill "start" option. i cant click anything and i cant get the game to start. what did i do wrong?
I come to warn about enabling clock speed control at %400. While it was on, it was impossible for me to dodge the (i dont want to make any spoilers) carousel boss. After MANY attempts, I tried disabling that option, and then it was so easy to beat that boss. I don't know why, but dodging with L1-R1 didn't work at all before disabling the option.
Wish I had found this video two years ago when I played Silent Hill...

also anyone know how o change keybinds. i would prefer to use a controller but i only have an xbox one and it won't work. i can't figure out how to change the keybinds, so im stuck with using like "J" to run for example. cant even figure out what the button is for shooting

I dunno if I have the wrong files but when I first put in the iso and bios files into DuckStation, no game appears afterward so I dunno what to do for the BIOS step

no matter what i changed (bc this is outdated, somehow, already), the widescreen doesnt work! :(
widescreen hack option is missing in my duckstation too, i have a newer version
the auto window aspect ratio setting no longer exsists instead i set a custom aspect ratio 32:9 to get my 3840x1080 resolution on full screen, its nice to see that wobble, distortion is gone and it running at 50fps, i tried to disable the PAL mode (under emulation/emulation speed) but then the game would run way to fast. manged to get to run 62fps on 125% of emulation speed NTSC 75fps PAL 62fps setting + it runs on Vulkan Api, set on Auto it defaults to DX11, ive always preferred Vulkan as it usually gives the best frame rates with minimum impact on the GPU and CPU.
Is there any way to modify tank controls to your knowledge? Is there a way to play SH1 with analogic controls?
Okay so I have a problem with it and I'm hoping u can help. I've applied all the settings and thus far it works perfectly UNTILL I turn on the flashlight. Fps just dropps down to 20 or even 10 sometimes and it gets super laggy. Sometimes the light from flashlight moves with a noticeable distance from Harry. How do I fix this?
Note this, everything is smooth again when I turn the flashlight off but when it's on, everything is laggy and slow including the sounds
you can play the game in browser on the vault lets you do save states and everything without installing anything
IN MY CASE what fixed all the frozened screens and all that kind of bugs was deactivating the "WIDESCREEN RENDERING" in graphics.

it also easily works on a android. all you need is retroarch and scan the sh1 file.
Ok so I've not played this game in more than 20 years... With the freezes caused by the settings, does the game straight up crash when i get to those parts? Or can i disable the settings WHILE it's frozen to proceed?
I don't want to have to spoil anything for myself having to know where to turn things off, and I'm not in love with the idea of losing progress to multiple crashes i know are coming, but not where.
This is awesome, but I’m not a PC guy. Silent Hill plays best on a PS VITA for me. The portability and small screen makes the game look better than it would on a tv screen.
Sometimes it has audio issues any fix? Or lover the mhz to around 200%?

For all the people trying to play Silent Hill on a Europe version, the 60FPS setting may not show up for you and the code in the description may also not work for you. This is because the 60FPS setting is only working on the original Silent Hill USA ISO file, don't ask me why.

im trying, and rn i have to choose between playing in english at 60fps or spanish at 30fps. Obviously english isn't my first language so idk, any tips?

I successfully set the game up but almost none of the keyboard controls work aside from moving and opening the map. I can't run, interact or open the inventory.
What do you mean by it causes the game to hang? Does that mean softlock? Also, when exactly should I disable pgxp? Should I disable it before I go into these areas or during?
Anybody else have a problem where the FPS will dramatically spike when opening the inventory, forcing slow down? Also it crashes every time I die...
