Landon you have grown on me over the years and now this is one of my favourite channels. Reviews of affordable gear and a Canadian perspective. Good on you man I wish you many more years of success.
I appreciate that!
I bought the Epiphone Les Paul Special TV Yellow about 3 months ago and I really like this guitar. I've been playing Gibson guitars for over 40 years and I have to say that Epiphone has done a fantastic job on this one.
I got this one too, my only prior LP was a Heritage I bought in the nineties. It was beautiful but before I could bond with it, my cat knocked it over and the headstock snapped off! But I love the little, lightweight Epi. P90s and good hardware have got me playing it way more than my older vintage guitars.
My first proper playable guitar I bought myself was a '74 EA-250 Semi. Bought it in '87 ,sold it in 1990. That was a lovely guitar I regret selling.
I also bought one of these Epiphone Les Pauls mainly after reading and watching all the positive reviews about them and I gotta say I'm not disappointed in the slightest. Absolutely wonderful instrument.
I have one of these and you are correct. It’s an amazing guitar. The price I paid for it, every time I pick it up I still cannot get over how great it is! It’s my cheapest guitar and I have to say my favorite of all. You just can’t beat that P90 sound imo
🎸👍
The p90s sounded great. Wonderful bite and crunch.
I like your self-deprecating, "everyman" style. Very credible. Keep up the good work.
Always!
That’s because he’s Canadian! 🇨🇦😷🤘
I just bought the same one and... now it is my favorite. I have a Gibson ES 335, an original ES125 from 1953, an original tele from 1966, a strat, and that $400 Epiphone is for now the guitar I love. I love the color, the shape, the way it play, and of course the P90 sound. It is on the rack with the others, and that's the one I want to play.
Such a nice looking and sounding guitar! I really appreciate your playing, deep dive reviews and humor, Landon.
Thank you kindly!
As always, a great review. Thanks Landon.
Just found your channel and love the level of depth you get into. I’m purchasing one of these for Christmas and this video has everything I need to know and then some haha. Great content!
I’ve been looking at these 2020 Epi’s and I feel like I always find myself coming back to the specials. Also I realized I’ve watched a few of your vids back last year when I was looking for mini amps yet... I hadn’t subscribed!! That changed today. Love your style & delivery 🔥🤘🏾
Welcome back!
I have been gassing for this guitar for a while now. Your review has made my decision easier. I am getting more and more impressed with the stuff coming out of Epiphone lately. They have really stepped up their game. Great review, as usual, and thanks for sharing.
Epiphone 2020 is 2 for 2 for me. Both Les Pauls have been great
Nice guitar. Loved the little nod to Alex Lifeson during the sound demos. Love the P90s.
Accidentally clicked on your youtube channel menu and saw that I watched everything so I scrolled down and having a marathon. That guitar is gorgeoussss!!
😄🎸
I haven’t tried out any of the “Inspired” stuff due to staying out if stores so thanks for these videos. Of the models, the Special is definitely on my radar/wish list.
Good review 👍
That's a nice guitar the pick ups and neck profile are very much appreciated.
great clarity and sustain, was pleasantly surprised.
Only subscribed to a couple of channels on CZcams and never commented before but felt the need to say thanks for all the information, really enjoyed the content and easy going style of your videos. Good luck. Brian (Ireland)
Bought one of these last year to try P90s. Made a couple personal preference mods and did a great setup. Now it's one of my favorite guitars, even being my least expensive. Glad you liked it
Damn this guitar looks good and has really solid electronics for the price.
Aaaand your reviews are really good, you definitely deserve more subs
oh hey thanks! more subs more problems :)
@@landonbailey The more people you get the more assholes you get !
@@landonbailey yeah when you hit 50k , 100k just don’t turn into a mindless gear marketing machine please. Too many channels are like that. You are one of the few out there that blends the two (marketing and actual content) well
I got my Epiphone Les Paul Special about a month ago. It just sounds so damn good.
Yep, mine too.. it's amazing
Really nicely edited and entertaining review, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Lovely! Thanks for this video... and for all you do, love your channel!
Glad you enjoy it!
What a cool guitar. Great review as always.
Rock on!
I picked up one of these 2020 Epiphone Les Paul Special guitars in TV Yellow, same model you have here, and it is amazingly fantastic. It plays extremely nicely and sounds amazing even acoustically. The neck is chunky but I like that a lot actually. It feels very comfortable for the fretting hand.
nice!
Thanks for sharing the video. I have inspired by Gibson, Epiphone Modern SG. I went into a shop to by a PRS SE and walked out with it after trying many guitars in the shop . Man it was loud and resonant unplugged. Looks great with maple veneer, bound ebony fretboard with pearloid trap inlays. Electronically it has the works probuckers (PAF style humbuckers), coil splitting, phase switching, full size pots and a treble bleed mod. With its grover locking tuners & graphtech nut it has great tuning stability. Best of all is the asymmetrical slimTaper neck I didn't know I wanted that but boy does it feel great in the hand, the glossy neck feels quick. The only down side is its on the hefty side for an SG around 8 pounds maybe that's why the sustain is so great. As you can tell 3 months later I'm still very happy with my purchase, if you can get hold of one try it out you wont be disappointed. My next guitar will have a P90 in the neck but in humbucker shape as the soapbar/dog ears are not my cup of tea. PS I tried the following before purchasing PRS SE's, Schecter, Ibanez, Yamaha and various other Epiphone SG, Les Pauls etc, plus classic vibes teles, strats and the Paranormal Toronado (after watching your review) and the paranormal offset Tele basically every guitar sub- $700 guitar in my town .
Very nice demo Landon. I think your Princeton is great for guitar demos because it is very clear and accurate. If a guitar sucks, you'll hear it with the Princeton. This guitar sounded great. I also learned that the pickups are adjustable from you're video. If I buy this guitar, I will buy it through your link.
oh hey thanks for the support! cheers
I have a 2020 Epiphone Les Paul Custom in black. It's a great guitar. I've owned the Gibson version and this holds it's own compared to that. I wanted an LP Custom again but there was I couldn't afford a Gibson. There isn't one thing I don't like about my guitar. I wanted the Special but I waited months and it was not in stock so I went with the Custom and I have no regrets. I've owned it for 6 months now. Good show. Thanks.
It really looks good on TV
they need a 'Computer Monitor' Yellow modern follow up.
Absolutely the BEST review on this guitar!!! Because of this video, I just might grab one, your in-depth review sells me, GREAT job my friend & I subbed to your channel and will support, you ROCK!!!
hey thanks! ya I've been impressed by all the Epiphone models I've tried this past year
I got a 2018 Epiphone SG-400 Pro ( Cherry/'66 style).this year and it is absolutely amazing! Love the build/feel/ pickups and used on a bunch of gigs since June.
This Epi Special P-90 is NEXT YEAR'S guitar! It just knocks me out!
nice!
I have that one and it is an awesome guitar. The price is more than reasonable and a lot of guitar for it! Thanks Landon!
we have the same experience for sure! awesome guitar
Fly By Night! Great video. Love your channel!
Awesome! Thank you!
Awesome job on covering all the details. I don't care what anyone says, Epiphone makes some very nice guitars!
Thanks!
Thanks for the awesome review. Are you going to keep it and play it some more for us?
like the review. Honest evaluation of your experience with the guitar. A wee bit misleading though - is it as good as a Gibson portion is what I was hoping to hear a little bit about even if it would be an opinion- but ...
Anyways that being said - it was informative. Special nod to you for acknowledging those folks that do not live near shops and that you want to give them data and impressions- very cool. If you do get your hands on a Gibson TV yellow, it would be great to hear a follow up.
Peace-
I love those P90s...they sound amazing to my ears...still don't have a guitar with them yet.Thinking of getting a Pelham blue epi 339 p90 semi hollow
Beautiful looking piece
Thank you I think I'm buying one of these tomorrow based on your in depth review. Wanted an Epiphone gold top but they are hard to find so I'm hoping hoping this sounds close to it
cool have fun!
I have the Epiphone ES 335 and Les Paul Standard Gold Top (Inspired by Gibson). Epiphone has really stepped up their game; I love both guitars. I'm waiting on the Les Paul Special.
great guitars!
Epis are fantastic. I own my LP Standard for nearly 20 years now and the finish is still good, I changed the pots recently and I tried EMGs out of curiousity, the stock humbuckers were still great. Really thinking about buying this one. I also have a Gretsch Junior Jet Streamliner. Costs the same here in Germany and has a P90 at the neck and a humbucker at the Bridge. I love that axe but that Epiphone still lives in my head... Great video, Landon, thank you!
cheers!
Earlier this year i stepped up and bought the Gibson Les Paul Standard 50's in Dark Cherry Burst and it is a fabulous guitar. Most recently i purchased an Epiphone Inspired By Gibson 2020 Hummingbird Pro 12 String guitar and it is just an absolute beauty in looks, tone, and feel. Extremely happy with it. I like ALL good guitars regardless of price or manufacturer or country of origin. Now hand that Les Paul Special over buddy so i can flog it for the next few weeks !! LOL
You know, your honesty regarding how green you are. Is really refreshing.
I'm green? 🤔👍😄
@@landonbailey l wasn't trying to be sarcastic or to be a dick when I made that comment. I really appreciate your honesty. You have a good channel I'm a subscriber.
Hey Landon. Not sure if I've seen this 1 b4. Got here from the link you added on the Cool Tele Thinline Video. I was looking to buy the same EPI LP SPECIAL, a couple of years ago but found a mint, earlier 56 Special Gold Top w the carved top (maple cap?) for a fair bit cheaper. Had to bite the bullet! A definite winner! Such a Beautiful looking & sounding guitar! I may have to look for a Junior Version of this guitar 1 day. Pretty good quality & price, 2nd hand too.
I own this guitar, I love it, those P90s are the truth. I did change the wrap around bridge to another one that can change the intonation on each individual string. It's definitely a keeper!
What bridge did you get?
Nice demo!!
Thanks!
I have had mine since February 2020 and still think it's a great guitar. I'm in the process of adding a bigsby, locking tuners and a roller bridge.
Don't waste your money on locking tuners as they don't lock into place anything other that the strings but a proper stringing method is far now effective than the lock tuners s with locking tuners you can't get any winding string around the tuner post . Locking tuners are a gimmick at best and really just expensive pointless crap at worst.
Trust me just string up the tuner post 3 times and it will hold tune, that's what I do on the bigsby guitars I've got.
I really like the picture behind you gives your studio a touch of class.
Excellent video! 👍🏻
Thank you! Cheers!
Landon, you might be my favourite reviewer. Great balance of "to the point"information, and touches of humour. You nailed my opinion of the neck 100 per cent. IE: I used to like thin Fenders but have grown into the baseball bats this year. Any thoughts on removing the paint from the back of the neck? I'd go with that and maybe apply a thin oiled finish.
hey thanks! I wouldn't try to remove this paint
Picked up one of these on Craigslist for $280. I'm *very* happy I did. Fantastic value.
I like the neck, but it can cramp up my hand depending on what I play. YMMV.
My only mod is a low profile bridge with adjustable saddles. Intonation is perfect.
This review describes my guitar exactly, pros and cons. Great job Epiphone!
good find!
I have this guitar! I absolutely LOVE the P90s sound
Great demo ! I’ve just checked the price for this and it’s £349 in the U.K. Great guitar for the money as are so many “ budget “ guitars at the moment .
It doesn't feel budget in my hands at all
Great review. I am a noob here regarding guitars and it ssounds wonderful. Even has your recommendation. I just can't get past the color. If they offered more choices, I'd be all in. Thx for the review. Well done.
Glad to help!
Ooh a big yellow guitar! It’ll match my big yellow taxi, my yellow submarine... it’s all yellow!
Writing a Coldplay sequel?
I have an Epiphone SG PRO from 2019, this is the only guitar I had nothing to complain about and it still has its stock pickups.. For me that tell it all. I put locking tuners and strap locks on all my guitars so I won't count those. The only negative, I had to put a new nut and replace the bridge with a tonepro because that guitar lives in B standard and would not intonate... but if you keep if in "normal" tunings, D being the lowest you do, everything is fine. Awesome guitar.
Yup, I too have one. It’s a KILLER guitar! 🤘🏼
i just bought this guitar and its by far the cheapest one I own, however it is now one of my favorites. I replaced the neck pickup with a SD vintage P90 but I didn't touch the bridge pickup, it was fine. This is every bit as good as the Gibson version.
Absolutely. Nice guitar!
Rock on!
I love the Epiphone Les Paul Special TV thinking about buying one...
Not really TV yellow. More mustard yellow. Sounds awesome and I’m loving the return to the proper headstock . Loving your videos and your style.👍
Thanks for watching!
Great video , I have a special ll in the closet since I got the traditional pro II and I've been wanting a p90 guitar so gfs p90's going in
Joe Davis you will really like it more when you get the gfs p90s in it. This model seems to be just right for the single coils. It turns into a Epiphone Tele sort of, but with a fatter neck.
Hi Landon! The guitar looks nice. The clean tone on the neck pickup is really warm as is the center position. I like the dirty tones of the bridge pickup. I would like to buy a guitar with this type of p90! In your opinion, which is the best p90 between Fender and Epiphone?
Switchcraft switch, Tusq nut, and CTS pots? Very nice. I didn't expect that at all. It sounded outstanding. I have one on backorder...
ya it's a quality guitar for sure
This guitar sounds awesome!
I just got mine here. The pros to this guitar, everything Landon said. The cons...I had to buff out some grime off my frets. Not easily seen but there is one capicitor for both tone controls. Sound wise it's great. I'm a big Social D fan and Dennis played a Gibson version back in the 90s and Johnny Two Bags plays one here and there. Absolutely nails the tone.
I did do a few things to mine from stock. Visually speaking I added a 50s style pinup girl on a record. I swapped out the original tailpiece with a Wilkenson wraparound from GFS. I also put one of my favorite sets of strings on there, NYXLs 11 guage. I have Orange Drop capicitors that will go in the cavity, waiting for my luthier to have some time for me, he keeps busy. I also put Dunlop straplocks on mine and I do have a Levy strap like Landon has.
The new strings and Wilkinson aluminum tapiece added more zing and mid range. The new strings and cleaning the frets made it easier to bend. Really this guitar is a looker and a joy to play. Make sure to get a good hardcase for this too when you pick it up.
I do want to point out that if you are a Tele player like me, this Les Paul will feel very comfortable and familiar to you more so than a Standard or another version with an arched top.
thanks for sharing all the mods! ya it's very Tele friendly in terms of feel for sure
@@landonbailey
Thanks! Another guitar that is similar in terms of a Tele friendly feel is a Schecter S-1. Depending on which model you get the scale length can differ. I think the most recent model is a 24.75 inch scale but I have an older Elite model and that is a 25.5 inch scale. I mention this because it is worth trying if you like both the Epiphone Les Paul Special and Telecasters. Also the woods change depending on the model series (mine is the Elite) so you can try two and both feel similar yet different. Schecter has a Tele style called the PT (for Pete Townsend) and that is a modern take on the Telecaster.
Epiphone has sure improved over the last few years. I didn’t like their P-90 pickups much but on your guitar they sound great. Over the last decade I’ve bought five Epiphones including one from 1966. Fit and finish is great on all the guitars I’ve bought.
It really did sound nice.
Awesome👍🏾🎸
I have a 2020 Epiphone LP Modern, 2020 Epiphone LP Traditional IV and 2020 Epiphone ES335 Pro. Great, great guitars.
These are a great value ...I love the LP special, they are a no nonsense guitar. The colour seems bit less bright than I remember TV yellow being but still quite fetching. the Gibson soapbar pickups seem to have a haor more snap and definition to my ear but perhaps that's the amp or the my speakers queering the deal there. Great review mate, keep up the good work. Bottom line here is, great value for the loonies.
🎸👍
I can dig it.
The Danny Johnson from "Derringer" guitar.
Check out Beyond The Universe from "Live". Good stuff.
I love that guitar ✌️ greetings from Germany.
This would be my first e guitar
Good choice!
That dirt tone is a home run. 👍 👍 👍
I have an Epiphone Les Paul Classic in honeyburst . Really pleased with it too.
cool! is that a new 2020?
@@landonbailey Yes, it’s a 2020. I’ve only had it a few months. First guitar I’ve ever had with coil split and phase switch. Really fun to play.
Good god that neck pickup clean.
OK, on a more serious note, that is actually a great sounding guitar to my ears!
I have one of the earlier models of this. It has a stop bar tailpiece, silver tuner buttons, slimmer/unbound neck. Really nice guitar for the money. I don't see many reviews with that version.
oh that sounds like a cool model! what year was that?
@@landonbailey 2010. It was labeled the "Epiphone Les Paul Special SC." I snatched it up right away. They made a bare-bones $100 model and the facier model which I got for either $400 or $500 I think. I got the TV Yellow version but it also came in a nice cherry finish, both have a nice bit of transparency showing wood grain.
It's a really great guitar for the money. I haven't tried the newer one but I've mostly heard good things.
You are right Landon !
“I’m right that I’m usually wrong”, cousin it must run in the family. Louis Bailey Owner of the concretetele (14 pound of weight)
How about doing a review of the Epiphone ES 335 Pro or 339? Bought a 335 Pro a month ago and can’t put it down. 🎸
I have the 2016 Gibson version of your guitar. I also have a 2017 '56 Epi Les Paul Goldtop(not currently in production)which has the same P90 PRO pickups as your Epi Special and I have to say I prefer them to the ones in the Gibson. Smoother and slightly darker. I love 'em. The neck on my Gibson I would say is 60s, but the neck on my Epi is huge---and again I prefer it to the Gibson.
I tried one out today at L&M in burlington. It's an excellent guitar, loads of fun to play. You xan find used ones for 300cad too!
pretty solid guitar
I’ve been wanting that guitar. Well, one like it. They’re sold out with more on order supposedly
That looks to be about as good a guitar as anyone could wish for! These "inspired by Gibsons" are a great range, by the look - and sound !! of it. I bought one of their Les Paul Junior re-issue models made in about 2014, which looks very similar and it's been a delight, although it was fitted with a unusual double-stack humbucker, that looks like a single coil P90 but isn't, so I was interested to see that the Les Paul special featured has straight single-coil "proper" P90s. Oh Yes !! Thanks for the review, dude...
it's a really cool guitar for sure
These guitars look like awesome value for what you get.
Hi Landon, great review as usual! Are the p90 Pros AlNiCo or ceramic magnets? I can't find the info anywhere.
I can't find that info either! I don't know
I have a 2013 epi 60s tribute that was high end epi at the time of its release, wonder if this one matches up in quality to that model.
Can’t go wrong with an LP Special in TV Yellow. Great guitars.
The neck pickup with distortion really sounds great on mine!!
🎸👍
I’m a fan of Telecasters. So when I got my Gibson LP Jr it was kinda weird to me that the back of the neck was painted the body color. Probably not so noticeable on a sunburst guitar because that part is all black. But, on tv yellow it sticks out like a sore thumb!
Subscribed due to your sarcasm
That's one thing that's great about the Les Paul Special, it weighs about 1.5-2 pounds less than a Standard.
Great video Landon, have you thought of doing a semi hollow body type I'd like to see your reaction to that type of instrument.
👍😊 czcams.com/video/woIGa2MNsVs/video.html
@@landonbailey thanks for the referral to your other video don't know how I missed that one. Thats a really nice guitar, i looked for them then realized in your video you can only get squier now.
A fair review. These new Epiphone guitars certainly seem to be good quality instruments and this Special sounds nice. I guess the reason the Gibson is more expensive is that they have to pay American workers a living wage and the factory has to comply with first world health and safety laws.
The color thooo😍
I want a guitar so bad 🥺😖
I think that not liking a painted neck is a Fender player thing, or maybe that's just me.
I think I'm a freak in that case. I own Fender , Gibson and Rickenbacker guitars and get on fine with them all regardless of finish.
I think you need to channel your inner Beatle with an Epiphone Casino. I got one in Sunrise Orange last Christmas and now they just issued more models in cool satin colours at a lower price. The new Crestwood, Wilshire and Corenet are really cool too.
maybe one day!
Great video ! I Wonder how good is this epiphone in front of a yamaha revstar 502t
Nice tgat they upgraded to CTS pots but that doesn't mean anything. My MIA Strat had very weak K output with CTS pots. I replaced them with higher K output mini alpha pots. and it's killer since.
I really wish that i had a les paul special or sg special dude they are really interesting guitars
I'm getting the LP Special later this month. I tried the SG too, but I just HATE the profile of the neck.
Damnit Landon. There goes another $500. Can't wait till it arrives!
Hey Landon did you sell VoxAC15? hope not :)
Do you make all guitar reviews using the same amp settings? if so, are EQ knobs set at noon?
I noticed the dirt tones always sound like the tone knob on the dirt pedal is set above the noon.
Pretty sure everyone here would like to know the amp/dirt pedal settings for each review.
Anyway I really like your channel and hope there will be more offset guitars too (like duo sonic, mustang, jaguar, etc)
ya the ac15 is gone. I dial in what sounds good with a particular guitar.
