Hello Everyone! I have started a second channel called "Roar!" where I take on challenges and push myself out of my comfort zone.
You can check it out here: czcams.com/users/roarrawr
Percussion is "tablas" where the drum head, the skin can be pressed and pushed to bend creating those sounds. czcams.com/video/SxRMsYre02k/video.html
This song inspired me to buy a tabla set and it's a lot of fun to mess around with even though they're very hard to play well.
10:14 "It's like Parseltongue. That's what it is. That's why I love it so much. He's Voldemort. Actually, it looks like the back of Voldemort. HHOH GOD I am such a geek." You could have very easily edited it out but you didn't and I thank you for it. BTW being a geek is a good thing it means you are passionate about something.

now do the version where maynard's choking a dude
what ,no What version is that?
Johnny it's live look up "tool don't pushit" and there should be a low quality video filmed from afar of a blue maynard
He was restraining a guy who jumped on stage. And he finished the whole song before security came and got him.
But yes, this happened. Yes you can find it and watch it.
Johnny here, itâs excellent.

Its beautiful watching her learn about Tool. I hope she listens to their whole collections and gets a chance to see them live, because live is a whole other experience!!
Maynard has said he considers his voice as another instrument in the band.
I've been to ALOT of concerts, and I've never experienced what I experienced with Tool compared to any other band. Ever. It is like your soul is taken out of your body, and wrung dry. I was exhausted afterwards. Usually it's the other way around and I'm jacked up. But not with Tool. One doesnt simply listen to Tool. You experience it. They make sure of that.đ€
Agreed completely, you put it into words better than I could. I finally got to experience a Tool concert 2 years ago after being a fan since the late 2000s and missing out on the 10,000 Days tour and suffering through the subsequent hiatus. I'd recommend trying hallucinogens and giving Lateralus a listen start to finish if you can't go to a concert... that's a trip and a half.
I've seen them from a place that was an old bank to Lollapalooza to just recently the Staples Center in LA.
When I saw them at the Santa Barbara bowl on the Anema tour. They were so loud that even at the back my chest was thumping. And yet it wasn't too loud. Tool fucking rocks
@@W1ldTangent You nailed it. I can tell you the best musical experience I've ever had and I've had many was eating mushrooms and listening to Tool. It was as if the music was made specifically to eat mushrooms and list to. Fucking amazing. I never miss an opportunity to see these guys.
I had an out-of-body XP at a Disturbed concert in Houston once
Thank you Gail. Brixton back row, eyes closed could have been anywhere

Most bands count to 4, Tool is calculating pi with those time signatures
Lol! Or natural log , otherwise known by the symbol e ... , sometimes pi gets boring for them!
@@javierperea8954 Natural Log of e is just 1, not much of a calculation. :)
@@Darktan2112 Lol... natural log is e or the infinite sequence 2.718281828459045....
@@javierperea8954
lol Natural log is not "e", either. Natural log isn't even a number.
A "Log" function is the inverse of an Exponential function. "Log" is an operation that is used to solve for "x", when you have an expression in the form of b^x = a, where "b" is the base of that log. So if you have 10^x = 1000, an equivalent expression using the "log'" operation would be Log base 10 of 1000 = x. So in "10^x = 1000", x = 3, just like in "Log base 10 of 1000 = x", x = 3.
A "Natural Log" is a log whose base is the constant "e", which you correctly identified as 2.718... etc.
So if you were to re-write this calculation "Natural Log of e = 1" in the "b^x = a" format, it would be 2.718^x = 2.718. In this case, x = 1.
What power do you raise e to get e? It's the same power you raise any number to result in itself - you raise it to the power of 1.

Danny Carey in my opinion is the best drummer ever. TOOL has their own unique style or genre. Iâd say they modern day Pink Floyd.
Todd Armbruster thatâs exactly how I describe them, modern day Pink Floyd plus math.

Yeeees! Please!!!
Absolutely love this version of pushit. Hit me like a ton of bricks when I heard it for the first time.
More Tool !!.
First time hearing this version as well...extremely impressed
Salival is absolutely incredible. I always wished they released more albums like it with live versions in such high quality. Tapers are gods to me... but nothing like a soundboard.
Their most primal work . He gives me chills.
The percussive sounds are Danny's Mandala pads with a Tabla sample. He (Danny Carrey - Drummer for tool) studied for a while under Aloke Dutta. I was actually at the E-Center in SLC for this actual concert where this was recorded in 97. This was one of the best concerts I have witnessed. It was back when Maynard was really into it. Such a transcendent experience.
I was at that Salt Lake show too. Amazing performance, my all time favorite song.
Lucky, I saw them for the first time in 2016 and he canât sing (scream) like he used to. Really took away from the experience but by far still an amazing performance that Iâll never forget
Tantojutsuninpo, you have to catch them early in the tour. Like any singer, by the end theyâre exhausted. I saw them in Houston a few years ago when they started the tour and Maynard was still perfect.
Lodogg 3323 Woah I was there in Houston Jan 14, 2016 up in the nosebleeds. Maybe I was being too critical of him but nobody can sing the way they did in their 20âs when they are pushing 50. If they come back Iâm definitely getting floor seats.
I was there also at the E-center (I still call it the E center). out of all the TOOL concerts i went to around the intermountain west region (from 1992 - Present) This one was the best of all time. this version of Pushit is still my favorite song. hit me hard when i was there live and it hits me the same way when i put the headphones on and closed my eyes and journey through this song today.
"It's like a psychedelic experience". Pretty much a summary of Tool. And Pink Floyd. You should do Eulogy from Tool. He shows quite a bit of range there.

The studio recording is much harder than this though. This is essentially the unplugged version. But definitely a good sample of his skills as a liver performer. He never disappoints at a live show no matter the band (Tool, A Perfect Circle, Puscifer), unlike many other performers that rely only the post production processing for their sound.
this version starts off much softer but by the end its about the same intensity as the Aenima studio version. Id say the difference is that the studio version more or less has a similar intensity the whole way through while this version dynamically increases in intensity till it gets to the crescendo at the end.
This is the âSalivalâ version of Pushit
@@JungleScene - True. I noticed that towards the end after I posted this.
Salival is harder than the studio version. That build up sneaks on you and next thing you know Maynard is releasing it all full force. You realize you had been slowly tensing up through the song and want to explode
I've been polishing my skills as a kidney performer..
My take on this song is about a bad time in my young life where I suffered mental and physical abuse from a high school boyfriend. I recognized the feelings right away as Maynard sang; I'm glad he asked the listeners to go to a vulnerable place, better to understand his message. It takes me back to that painful time; the song reminding me of the feelings I'd locked away, but also telling me how far I've come emotionally from then. Maynard writes about what we can all identify with, and Tool adds that beautiful music to it. The guitar that cries in pain...so familiar...the hurt, the fear and desperation that abuse brings.
Tool, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Linkin Park... Emotion, Pain, Sadness, Rage, Hurt, Sorrow, ELATION & the BLACKEST Depths of Depression all made manifest in music & Lyrics. Maynard is a very lucky man, most of these groups saved the lives & souls on Millions of people while destroying their creators. It just hurts so much sometimes, but their self-sacrifice helps us push on & LIVE. May GOD of any persuasion or name that exists bless them for what they gave to us.

The beauty of his singing, especially in this version, is that he sounds like heâs trying to push through something - like heâs pushing that voice out, until it breaks through and opens up. You hear that opening up and release at the end. Itâs so beautiful. And yes, listening to Tool is like a religious experience. Like a ritual. Thatâs what Maynard has always said about their performances, and people say he seems pretentious, but thatâs just how he wants people to experience it.
Not only is he using his voice as "just" another instrument, he usually stands in the back during shows. The band is up front, he's in the shadows, most of the time you can't see him.
Now. Not earlier.
Last time I saw them he was wearing a Darth Vader mask standing in the shadows.
The last three times I saw them, he was rear stage left behind Adam Jones and rarely came anywhere near the front of the stage. He was basically a silhouette for the entire show.

John Eaton, as much as I love Maynard (top 5 singers) I also know that most of his band doesnât see him as highly as he sees himself. Many radio show hosts, talk show hosts, touring bands etc have neutral, if not negative things to say about Maynard and his arrogance and just plain asshole-ness. Look it up and see for yourself. Itâs what makes him- him, I guess, but heâs really just an extreme introvert that handles his fame by being a massive prick.
I still love him, lol

it is exceptionally hard not to geek-out with TOOL in your head. maynard et al have that effect. you find things happening in the mood, in the lyric (i love the surprise of no lyrics sheet that lead to unexpected connections being made). they take on contrasts more extreme than other bands, and do it all smoothly. maynard's voice helps as he is so capable, competent, and willing to be an instrument. it's fun watching you discovering this band. i've had them in my head since their first e.p and they've only become more thoughtful, complex, and satisfying.
you know maynard hates to be the face/ focal point of the band, they thought a lot before deciding on tool and he faces away from the crowd 3/4 of the time to further emphasise that he is 'a' member not 'the' member. Its a good thing he didn't see you dis the band like that.
@@Handles_Are_Bad.Phuk-them-off dis the band? i love the band. and i am aware of maynard's team-first approach, but he also has fronted APC, Puscifer, and a bunch of other one-offs. he performs, it is his modus operandi, to be an instrument, to be a vocalist performer; no stage, no performance, so he gets out there and creates. the whole band loves to create and have side projects, not all are musical ventures, but they keep busy. i have no issue explaining myself to anyone, but the fact is that the vast majority of the fandom can name Maynard, before Danny Carey (drums), Adam Jones(guitar), or Justin Chancellor(bass, since 95).
@@hippomancy Loving a thing does not mean you treat it with respect. maynard et al is a "your so super cool and smart, hip and edumurikated" way of saying tool, the band name, in an, as explained earlier, disrespectful way. Secondarily anybody that recognises the singer and not the band isn't worth their salt. APC, go watch the video clip for judith and then tell me with a straight face that he is taking centre-stage there, even tho its a song about his mum. As for his shitty side project, which I admittedly stopped plying attention to in all of ten seconds, in everything others have shown me he is largely behind the stage or obscuring himself (granted that may be a part of his performance there or in general at this point) but in the other two cases he denies being the front man, so how's about you show the band respect if you love it so much and abide by the members wishes?
@@Handles_Are_Bad.Phuk-them-off sounds like you think you're the policeman. getting outraged on someone else's behalf doesn't mean you are somehow the 'better' fan, and that your methodology is the only "respect" to be recognized. you sound worshipful. is this something your god Maynard would smile on? chill out. been listening to Tool since 1990. been listening to King Crimson and Peter Gabriel (whom i listen to way more than Tool) since 1977. been listening to the Beatles since 1970. you need Maynard on the pedestal, which he would absolutely f'king hate, go right ahead, but others have been on the pedestal, and it's all ephemeral. i remember when Elvis died. next. respect and worship are two different things. go be someone else's priest.
@@hippomancy Outrage implies I have investment and\or emotion here rather than that I'm just calling you out as a fake when you claim fandom. "As for his shitty side project," clearly worship the guy, I think he'd be indifferent or happy that i think for myself and question authority tho. "chill out" the ability to crate a sound or resounding argument is inhibited by high emotions, so think I'm pretty lacking there. Not sure why you are big|)icking that, clearly massive, E-peen you got but good on you for being committed, I guess, might just be that your brain is so old its starting to rot in the case try fish and olive oil coupled whit taking on a new hobby or interest. Showing the path, of one that you claim to love, would rather you take is nether worship nor law enforcement. Priests are also something that would be against the philosophy's that the band teaches.
Maynard is a world class athlete....so his breath control is next level
Much agreed. His shit is hard to sing if you don't breath right and breath at the right time. Dude is epic!
I've said it before, I always forget this is live halfway through.
Have you seen Tori & Maynard's duet? It was the RAINN benefit concert back in '96. The whole show was amazing, but their duet was gorgeous. The song was Muhammad My Friend.
sidhedanu yes yes yes!
sidhedanu oooohhhh, good call
YES! Itâs amazing.
i gotta listen to that song, again!!
sidhedanu two of my all time favorite singers, together. Itâs amazing
Maynard speaks parseltongue.
Anyone surprised?
I didn't think so.
Texocracy heâs definitely a slytherin.
I love how much you're into this (And in your other videos!). It feels so good to see an expert in a field really appreciate a piece a of work on a deep level.
I already loved Tool, but your insight made me love them for even more reasons, and I'm thankful for that.
Got to love Tool virgins! Watching you hear this for the first time is awesome. Ancient History and Pentatonic Scales in Music. It is believed that the pentatonic scale was used way back in ancient times. ... These musical instruments were found to be tuned to the pentatonic scale, with the theory that they are about 50,000 years old
What instrument was still in tune after 50,000 years ya rocket
@@markcurrie1541 a vibraphone or a flute, for example.
@schindler91589 good shout folks
Thatâs really interesting,. Thanks.
lmao
Parabol/Parabola, please. It's my all time favorite song. Another aspect of tool I've found interesting is the choice of where they lyrics are sung. Lateralus, for example, is sung with the syllables matching the Fibonacci sequence (which is related to the golden ratio) in ascending and descending order. Furthermore, the song is written in 9-8-7...the 16th (4 beats x 4 beats=16 beats=1 measure) digit of the Fibonacci sequence is 987. The entire Lateralus album is highly associated with mathematics.
@schindler91589 Good correction. As you can tell, I'm not very familiar with theory, I just go by feeling. I know mathematics moreso.
@schindler91589 Lol! If only we lived in a world where that didn't surprise you!
omg pls stop with the fibonacci thing
You should listen to Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman)/Rosetta Stoned if you havenât already
@@painter7961 brilliant!
"Sounds like a spiritual ceremony."
It is.
The science of Vocals.... Throws a new perspective on music.. Awesome Beth...Thanks.
Danny Carey (drums) is a genius. Some say, like me, one of greatest drummers alive. I often compare him with John "Bonzo" Bonham from Led Zeppelin.
Check out Bill Bruford and Billy Cobham
More like geedy lee
Check Flo Mounier from Cryptopsy too
TOOL has 2 exceptional talents no doubt Danny Carey is one of them.
guerril1337 3, and an incredible guitarist whose contribution as an arranger and artist is larger than the rest of the bandâs. Theyâre all integral parts
Its a live album btw
there are a couple studio tracks on it. A zeppelin cover for one.
No Quarter isnât live
LAMC and Maynard's Dick are not live recordings.
Just more reason for her to do another one!
Definitely my favorite video of yours, easily the most powerful performance I've ever heard
Brilliant... Gives me goosebumps... Only band that has truly mastered all the elements! Love the reactions and explanations from herđđ€
Maynard has another band called A PERFECT CIRCLE, you should react to their song JUDITH. that was maynard's personal story about his mom
It's one part of what is commonly called a trilogy about his mother. The first is Jimmy by Tool, the second is Judith by APC, and the third is Wings for Marie by Tool. Jimmy is a bit more cryptic, but all the together make a lovely story arc about deflection, anger, grief, acceptance, and growth as a person as a result of said grief. It's quite the tapestry.
Well, no. His mother was a Christian and loved much by Maynard. He, as all of us, goes through a phase of questioning God for his mother's suffering. Judith was his mother's name, but it's more about his feelings toward her God and interpretation.
If you listen to Judith by A Perfect Circle, you really should follow it up with Tool's Wings for Marie (parts 1 & 2).
I think 3 Libras is better vocally.
@@JoclynM It is technically five songs, now. Jimmy, Judith, Wings Part 1 and 2, and now Horizons from Puscifer, are all about his mom.
Please do Portishead (Live in Roseland NY)- Over. Song absolutely gives me chills every time.
I like Roads on that album
That entire album is perfection.
This song, this particular version, did something to me years ago. It's amazing how music can be magic in ways. Beth's description describes how it felt in my heart so many years ago for the first time. Absolutely love this video.
Love the new view on songs I've listened to for years. Awesome work Beth, thanks! Subbed.
Definitely Deftones ft. Maynards' 'Passenger', properly awesome song.
If you really want an experience, TOOL goes on tour in 2019! They will be in the UK on 16 June! Maybe a new album by then...
Holy shit...you were right
Fucking missed it didn't I, I did however get to see Metallica this year and Iron Maiden last so I've done 2 of the top 3 with Tool left as #1 on the bucket list.
Yessir.I saw them in Jersey on LSD and then saw them in Brooklyn. Both were an amazing experience
I love this...and everything Beth has to say but this song is so good that when sheâs about to pause I am like...no!!! Wait!!! đ
âHe who shall not be namedâ has an amazing sounding voice. đź
Tabla drums. This live version is very different from the studio version. Completely different arrangement. Some people like this arrangement more. I tend to gravitate more toward the studio arrangement.
David Bovey itâs pretty much the same at about the half way mark and on.
You should try to figure out Mike Patton
lol which version? seems every band he's in has its own sound.
@@abyss610 exactly. He is a jack of all trades. She should dive into the Mike Patton universe
I chuckled when I read this. Good luck with that shit! Hahaha
I recommend Mr. Bungle!!!
@@TheAlysin agreed
That's exactly what I've always said about Tool, that Maynard uses his voice as another instrument, rather than just singing over the top of everything. Cool video.
The Parseltongue/Voldermort reference at 10:20 made me chuckle. I totally get it, and will very likely see He Who Shall Not Be Named in my head every time I hear that part now, lol.
I think that justin is godly bass player and fits great in tool
I think youd be hard pressed to find anyone that disagrees with that!
Those melodies he gets are fucking amazing. Definitely a master at work.
He was great in his previous outfit too, Peach, a cover of one of their songs is on this album "You lied" it's real bass heavy.
Dm myg spasm is a peach cover too, you knew he was the guy for tool if you listened to peach
@@OGT4204 yeah I just don't think spasm is a good display of his bass skills. Good song, don't like the cover though.
I delighted to listening a Tool with other people who's understand their music too. It's a pleasure to watch you when you discover it first time. This happened to me long time ago... Keep going with Maynard, please. Regards
I got to see them perform this song that way at Ozzfest in 98. It was my first real concert/festival. I think that was the epitome of a live performance that nothing will ever top.
You nailed not only the vocals review but how the band works so well together! Great review, Beth!
Ineratic ESP - the Mars Volta
His vocals are really wild
Man, besides Tool, Mars Volta is the only band that gave me a psychodellic ASMR experience without drugs. Especially their album Cygnus.
i like the fact that you are reacting to the "not so obvious" Tool songs :-)
Came to see her react to the "i might fade like a sigh if i stay" part
For that reason alone I wish she had done the album version instead. That part is much more amazing in that version.
