English spoken narrator murdered all German and Belgian names
Indeed. Nice kinda old-fashioned documentary, but the German and Belgian names are almost unrecognizable. "Hrubesch" should be pronounced "Roo-besh", not "Rouge".
Murder and German's ? - you sure girl with a crayon .
Especially Ceulemans...RIP
This was the first football tournament I fully remember as a then 9 year old. I have vague recollections of 1978, but this is the one I have clear memories of. England were awful as usual, the violence during the Belgium game I also remember. I’ve also still got my Panini Europa 80 album.
My first tournament was 1982 but the 1980 team was still very present at the time, with the Panini stickers, picture books and newspaper articles and so on. No internet, so we had to browse those like crazy and the faces and names of the players got burned into my brain 😄
So do I
born 1970
In times with an "Euro" with 8 teams, about a dozen of competent teams was absent. In 80 they were inter alia France, GDR, Soviet Union, Austria, Sweden, Poland, Scotland, Hungary,...
Very cool..i still have my 1986 World Cup Panini album..it was hard work till i finally got my Maradona pic..I got it for just one Bryan Robson...
England weren't awful at all. They were unlucky not to win against Belguim due to an incorrectly disallowed goal and were unfortunate against Italy after playing very well, and they did beat Spain. They badly missed the injured Trevor Francis.
04:13 Fun fact. The penalty was caused by young Lothar Matthäus in his very first appearance in the Nationalmannschaft.
The coach Derwall did not consider him again in the tournament.
Thanks so much
Very good German team, a little underrated - Rummenigge, Schuster world class and backed up by the burly Hrubesch.
the German defense was also mostly world class: Schumacher, Stielike, Förster, Kaltz and Briegel.
@@Donan777 Stielike & Kaltz world class ? Not sure about that.
@@zokkostenniszone3282 little known fact: Stielike won the Don Balon Award for the best foreign player in La Liga 4 years in a row from 1979 to 1982.
Not even Cruyff, Ronaldo or Messi achieved that.
That´s world class.
Because of Kaltz I wrote MOSTLY world class btw. Although he was close to being world class due to his very effective banana slides IMO.
@@Donan777 Don Balon is garbage and what the F are banana slides - speak English Pedro !
@@Donan777 Schuster who also played in Spain was more of a genius than Stielike
1980 Die Mannschaft has had very good players; Karl-heinz Rummenigge, Horst Hrubesch, Hans -Peter Briegel, Karlheinz Förster, Bernard Dietz, Hansi Müller, Klaus Allofs, Felix Magath, Manfred Kaltz...
And Toni Schumacher one of the best goalkeeper ever
@@paulis4278 I didn't include Harald Schumacher cause he deliberately hit a french player in Word cup semi-final in 1982. I can't think the other way. He's going after the player, not for a ball.
you forgot to mention the best player
Why no mentioning of the German captain Bernard Dietz? Playing for MSV Duisburg, the "graue Maus" (grey mouse) of the Bundesliga, but captaining the national team; he was the most prolific goalscoring defender probably in football history. Look him up on wikipedia, but also on "The Knowlege" in "The Guardian".
As captain he was awarded the cup. And in the VIP stand in the stadion in Rome there was also Paola, wife of the belgian king. Later he said he didn't recognize her and so didn't shook her hand, what he regretted afterwards

How is it expanded IF there was 14 games after the Groups in 76 and - ohh you do the maths for 80 ? - ps Italy could have won this without winning a single solitary match - and that's devo a mathematical Fact - I think ? . Quick maths maybe 2 more games err perhaps.
In 1976 the finals only had 4 matches - 2 semi finals, the final and the 3rd place play off. In 1980 there were 8 finalists - 2 groups of 4.
Hansi Muller rather overrated - looked good and had an elegant left foot. Very skilful but not knowing how to use his skill in the team context. Picked up a knee injury and the Germans were better off with his replacement, Felix Magath.
I agree that Magath was brilliant, but you‘re underrating Hansi Müller.
