===================================
Germany won the tournament, beating the Czech Republic 2-1 in the final with a golden goal during extra time; this was the first major competition to be decided using this method. This was also Germany's first major title won as a unified nation, adding to the two European Championship titles won by West Germany prior to reunification.
The Czechs lost to Germany, the eventual group winners, in their opener, but then defeated Italy and drew with Russia. Italy's defeat meant they had to beat Germany in their final game to progress, but the World Cup finalists could only manage a 0-0 draw and were eliminated.
Jürgen Klinsmann opened the scoring for Germany in their match against Croatia. A goal from Davor Šuker evened the score after 51 minutes, before Matthias Sammer of Germany scored eight minutes later, and the game ended 2-1 to Germany.
The semi-final was a repeat of the 1990 World Cup semi-final between Germany and England. Alan Shearer headed in after three minutes to give his side the lead, but Stefan Kuntz evened the score less than 15 minutes later, and the score remained 1-1 after 90 minutes. In extra time, Paul Gascoigne came very close to scoring a golden goal, but fractionally missed a cross from Shearer in front of the empty goal, Darren Anderton hit the post, and Kuntz had a goal disallowed for pushing. Neither team was able to find a second goal. In penalties, both sides scored their first five kicks, but in the sixth round, Gareth Southgate had his penalty saved, allowing Andreas Möller to score the winning goal.
The final saw the Czech Republic hoping to repeat Euro 1976 when Czechoslovakia defeated West Germany; the Germans were aiming to win their third European Championship. Patrik Berger scored from a penalty in 59th minute to put the Czechs ahead. German substitute Oliver Bierhoff scored in the 73rd minute to make it 1-1. Five minutes into extra time, Bierhoff's shot was mishandled by Czech goalkeeper Kouba and the ball ended up in the back of the net for the first golden goal in the history of the competition. Germany were European champions again, but for the first time as a unified country.

The best Germany jersey ever - 1996 Euro
the modern ALL BLACK 🖤
I have Usa 94 Germany Jersey, just love the design so much. Legendary Times.
Sammer is the first name that comes to mind when I think of this German team. Also Dieter Eilts was a friggin monster in this tournament. People like Schweinsteiger, Lahm, Müller, Klose and Neuer are legends in their own right but I prefer this gritty, streetwise and unyielding German team over the 2014 team. Also much respect to the iconic Croatian, English and Czech teams. Good times.
I remember this tournament quite well; it was a really good tournament. I agree with you on this German team as well. I prefer the old German teams of the past tbh.
Every time I see the old Wembley, it reminds me how much I miss it.
Those were the days.......
Guys, I also think same ways. German team of 1980-1990s, especially this one was a very classy team, of German character, style, will not to be broken and save match agianst all ods, like vs England or Czekhia in Final. There will be never again such Germany
One hell of a team! Unbelievable quality squad full of leaders in their prime. And Germany won the EURO although they lost several of their players due to injuries during the tournament (they even had to nominate Jens Todt during the tournament who wasn't in their squad from the beginning)
They did not pick Matthaus and Effenberg. Basler and Kohler were injured. Kahn was on the bench and Jeremies and Worns not even in the squad
This Germany team wasn't the most easy on the eye, however I liked them a lot more than Joachim Low's team. They had genuine qualities of grit and resilience. And they had the guts to play with 2 midfield playmakers, Hassler and Moller.
They could afford to play both players given their formation, which was 3-5-2 plus they unveiled an older surprise packet in Dieter Eilts who was the defensive midfield rock who allowed those two to have free rein. He was even able to cover for Sammer when he went forward.
Eilts the defensive cover, Hassler the orchestrator and Moller was the attacking raider (though Scholl took his place during the latter half of the tournament).
It was a fine midfield even without Matthaus and Effenberg.
Well, Jogi Löw played with 2 midfield playmakers as well (Kroos and Özil), plus he had a team that had plenty of offensive quality in almost every position. The 2014 team also had "genuine qualities of grit and resilience". They played in tropical humidity, thunderstorm, blistering heat and autumn-like cold. They had to surpass an epidemic of injuries with at least five or six starting players injured or recovering from injury at the start of the tournament. They even had to endure a flu wave before the Algeria match. They held a very strong French team, future World Champions, at arm's length, then squashed Brazil with 200 million people against them and finally beat Argentina when five minutes before the match they lost first Sami Khedira, one of their key players, and later Christoph Kramer. In one sentence: The football gods threw the kitchen sink at them for weeks, but they nevertheless came out victoriously. Out of 35 official games between 2010 and 2014, Germany had won 32, which is probably a world record. Deserving champions if there ever was one.
You could make a case that Löw's team needlessly threw away Euro 2012 when they were probably already by far the best team in the world, and of course WC 2018 and Euro 2020 were a disappointment. But the same is true for the 1996 team. They were successful in England, but the other performances between 1992 and 2000 were weak. That's football. You don't always win.
Not to forget Sammer who was magnificent in the entire tournament.
The 2014 team was far superior to this team in every aspect bar maybe penalties, which they didn't have to shoot in 2014. The team in Brazil played in horrible conditions and beat the two big South-African teams Brazil and Argentina. The quality in compared to 1996 was on a totally different level.
@@johnjim6793 I agree on everything you said. Spot on 👍👍

wow, football was a war back then. Hope Germany can get crowned the 4th Euro cup after a long time of waiting!
It was war because teams were national and ethnically tribal.
This has been destroyed now.
@@mariobasler3221 Lol. Nope. It was war, cos refs didn't knew, that red card exists. WC'98 fixed it.
@@AlfaRiy12 There were at least 2 red cards shown in this video...
@@Yebirax Yep. But in this game was 3 yellow cards. And that's all folks.)
when germany played with german players.,.,great times
Racist
Your obviously saying when they were playing with only Caucasian players?
Yes, and now it became half-African team. That is why Germany will not win anymore by its style, will, grit. Those Germans could win against all odds losing in semifinal and Final. The current one dont know what to do after missing a goal against even Korea or Hungary.
Bro are you OK? Most German players now are German
@@sergezor they won the world cup in 2014 with Ozil (Turk) Boating (Ghanaian) Klose & Podolski (Polish) right now the main problem of the German national team is they have only a few world class players among them the Bayern Munich strike force of Leroy Sane , Serge Gnabri and Jamal Musiala (Africans) another one is the Real Madrid centre half Antonio Rudiger (African) the rest of the team like Hofmann, Ginter, Wolf, Halzenberg, Sule, Raum, Schlotterbeck and Fullkrug are all a truck load of rubbish (all “real” Germans).
the highlights with dramatic muzik are as so good! just beautiful art without any commentary 😗😌
The amazing thing is that they could win this tournament with such a had coach. Now imagine if they had had a good coach.
Berti vogts was bad ?
@@FicheirosRetro16 He got knocked out of the quarter-finals in two consecutive World Cups where he lost to weak teams. He literally took over the World Cup winning side and benefitted from reunification by getting even more players. In any other country he would have had to step down.
@@Jose-sy1je Croatia was as good if not better than Germany in 1998, and they were playing 11vs10. Germany defense was kinda overrated for me. The lost of 1992 euro was the biggest shock for me.
@@FicheirosRetro16 Croatia had a very good team, but they were completely pinned into their own half by Germany up to that red card. Then they lost to France in the semi even though France was one man down. So what I'm saying is that despite them being good, they were not a top team. Germany did make the final in '92, but they played horribly throughout the tournament. Finished second in the group and were completely outplayed by the Netherlands. Didn't even look close like being on the same level. Barely got a tie with a last minute free kick vs that unified team of former Soviet states. Long story short, it was a lousy coach and they should have done way better. They already lost games before that they would never have lost under Beckenbauer or any other coach.
Grit comes to my mind ! Moller and Hassler come to my mind ! And yes Bierhoffs fortuitous goal ! Ziege comes to my mind !

Most of those challenges in "todays" era would result in straight reds. Back then it was debatable if it was a foul or not
