    It'll take you about 16 years to actually understand the plot entirely, but it's so good. I still don't have an entire grasp on it.

    For piano nerds, Dave Malloy wrote a musical fantasia about Rachmaninoff called Preludes. He structures a lot of the music around Rach's most famous peices (Rach 2 etc)

      Yes yes! Preludes is so good!!! It’s basically about Rachmaninoff’s 4 year writers block and it’s genius.

    It crazy to hear Family Meeting cuz Brittain Ashford in Great Comet plays Sonya. The quiet and speaks for her mind in one song. In Ghost Quartet, shes a 7 year old telling her dad that he’s going to die in like 30 years and should just continuing drinking.

  • @DoorstoCoolness
    @DoorstoCoolness Před 6 lety +71

    Fun fact about these awesome orchestrations: all instruments in the score are played by the four performers! The instrumentation (with the original musicians) is:
    Brent Arnold (vocals, cello, guitar, erhu, dulcimer, percussion)
    Brittain Ashford (vocals, autoharp, keyboard, percussion)
    Gelsey Bell (vocals, metallophone, Celtic harp, accordion, percussion)
    Dave Malloy (vocals, piano, keyboard, ukulele, percussion)
    Gelsey Bell also happens to be a New Music (with capital N and M) composer, who writes a lot of awesome out-there music. She was the one screeching in The Photograph, so she also has a really cool extended technique background! Brittain Ashford also writes really nice indie music (on autoharp, which is my favorite freaking instrument in the world).

    Hadestown is really neat, and one of my number one recommendations always. It was originally a song cycle about the story of Orpheus and Eurydice (maybe more of a concept album?) Lyrically it draws a lot of inspiration from Greek Lyric poetry, and musically it's folksy and full of cool harmonies, inspired by southern jazz and the great depression. There are two versions, the concept album featuring Bon Iver as Orpheus, and a live cast album that was just released today! The concept album is my favorite, but I haven't listened to the live version enough to tell how I feel about it yet. The live version is more like a musical and has a pretty coherent plot, although they're still making tons of edits to try and prep it for Broadway.

    I love this musical/song cycle so much and am so happy it’s getting the attention it deserves. I strongly prefer the live version however (even with the weird notes in “bad men”- but the lights were literally turned off for that one.) My favorite song in the entire thing would be very difficult to chose- somewhere between starchild/ usher part 3/ the photograph/ subway and The Wind & Rain. It’s so difficult to choose *especially* with the amazing harmonies.
