    I knew you would love this show! It's so unique and Dave Malloy is an absolute genius. This show has actually been around for a while on off-off-broadway and I'm so glad it got to have a chance on Broadway, considering the shit that's out now. Overall I'm just glad you liked it!

      Jonathan Matthews actually great comet won 2: lighting design and scenic design

    • @krypsiematthews1027
      @krypsiematthews1027 Před 7 lety +24

      Elizabeth Fahsbender That doesn't attribute anything to its originality and newness. The stuff everyone said was outside of the box for great comet was its genius composition, its complex story, the fact that it doesn't rhyme, its unique staging, blocking, choreography.... Nowhere in there do I see scenic or lighting. It didn't push the boundaries in those areas. If it was lit entirely with, say, glowsticks, that might be reason, but no. It still has amazing scenic and lighting design, but nothing groundbreaking and edgy that pushes any boundaries. What I meant when I said it won zero, is that it won zero in the areas that counted. In the areas it deserved. Lighting and scenic design, no matter how important in the show, don't contribute to its success. It's unnoticeable by the audience at best. You only notice bad scenic design or lighting design. You can notice beautiful lyrics that sound like poetry though.

      @emeliap.6596 Před 7 lety +30

      Jonathan Matthews i agree with your comment, but i must say a few of my friends saw it and they said the lighting was spectacular. the scenic design is also a large part of its originality? i don't know if you've seen the stage but it's no ordinary stage. (also, side note: there is one scene (the duel) where the stage is basically just lit by glowsticks)

    As much as I love Dear Evan Hansen and its message, The Great Comet was robbed for Best Score. I love the DEH music but admittedly there wereso many other musicals who deserved that title way more.

    • @miawang4554
      @miawang4554 Před 6 lety +70

      I totally agree! DEH has meaningful lyrics and morals, but I would argue that Comet has those as well; maybe they do it better! Comet also dives many different genres of music, as DEH is mainly contained within one. Definitely robbed at the Tony's.

      I love DEH, it's one of my favorite musicals of all time, but Great Comet defiantly deserved Best Score, and honestly I would say best show too. You could say that DEH has a more modern, important message, and you would be right. But everything about great comet, the music, the acting, the pit, the stage, the lighting, it's all so inventive and unique. I think those unique, risky musicals deserve to be recognized over just very well done versions of similar styles and structures.

    Dave Malloy said that he wrote the Prologue the way he did because a reviewer of the show said there were "too many characters that have, like, 9 different names", so he wrote the Prologue to kind-of spite them by using that kindergarten tool of repeating things over and over again until you get the concept. Hilarious!

    YES!! I was smiling along with you! I had a feeling you'd appreciate the orchestration and harmonic structures this show has to offer. It really is a breath of fresh air. I saw it in December, sat right up on the stage and was an arm's length away from nearly every cast member and musician, it was an experience at the theatre unlike any other for me, just so so special. My favorite musical moments from this are: the Indian inspired string counterpoint in a short section of No One Else (which itself is beautiful), and there's this moment I won't spoil where two people kiss for the first time and the entire cast plays a massive chord entirely on wine glasses pitched with different amounts of water and one by one they leave the chord until it resolves into a single unison G#/Ab, and another moment where two characters sing notes back and forth that are a minor second interval while singing the lyrics "constrained and strained". ahhhh i could go on, this show continuously blows my mind.

    Great Comet is my FRICKEN lifeblood, it's different in sense of genre and it doesn't rhyme, it's diverse down to having different non-broadway sounding voices (which i really apperciate), and not to mention it's WILD live. I was sitting in the back orchestra and still had plenty of interaction with the cast. I could go one but this show is just so important to me, as a young theater weirdo.

    Great Comet deserves so much more than it is getting - completely innovative with the potential to be a long-standing Les Mis-esque show. The 'gateway' musicals that rule the internet at the minute (BMC, Heathers, DEH, Hamilton) are really pushing some shows out of it. Because of all of Broadway's new audience (please don't attack me, I am relatively new but nowhere near as 'close-minded' with the musicals I listen to I guess), I think that The Tony's felt pressured to give Tony's to commercial musicals for ratings. Comet was totally snubbed - it's music is technically far superior to DEH (like looking at sheet music, repetition, e.t.c). Also, the cast were/are so good! Josh Groban was outstanding as Pierre and Brittain is incredible in 'Sonya Alone'.

    I'm not sure if you're aware, but there is an earlier recording with Dave Malloy playing Pierre. Personally, this is the version I prefer. The quality of Dave Malloy's voice differs from Josh Groban's, and the difference slightly changes the tone of the show for me. In the Malloy version, I feel like I'm in a gritty club, listening to an acting troupe who aspire to be something grander ("You are at the opera" takes on an almost ironic meaning). It reminds me of "The Threepenny Opera". In the Groban version, I feel like I'm actually at the opera. To clarify, I'm not saying that one version is better than the other. Its just about the feeling that the recording provokes.

    A couple of other people have mentioned The Hunchback of Notre Dame and I also highly recommend it. Don't be deterred by its Disney origins; the stage musical is much darker than the animated movie because it follows the book more closely and it's targeted at adults. I think Hunchback is by far the best musical theatre that Disney has put out there (no pun intended).
    (Also I'm not trashing Disney here, just saying that Hunchback is on its own level).

    How am I only just seeing this video now?!? Kevin I am OBSESSED with this show! I saw it off Broadway a few years ago and saw it on Broadway last year. The music is even more amazing when you experience it with the show. Josh Groban killed it, but Dave Malloy (who wrote the music) also played the part in the off Broadway run and he's amazing too! We need to sit down and talk about this music one day.

      I like almost every musical I listen to. However, Great Comet is another level for me.
      Great Comet has basically ruined other musicals for me. I love the elaborate story, I love the cast (especially Josh Groban, he sings like an angel), but I think what attracts me to Great Comet most is the complexity of the music. Other soundtracks are so boring technically. Great Comet has layers and layers of melodies, counter-melodies, instruments, etc. There's something new with each listen.
      My heart hurts SO MUCH that I might never get to see the musical live 😭😭😭😭😭 Closing GC so soon was nothing short of a TRAGEDY

      Meeee. My taste is a little different, but my top favorites are lowkey similar. Like Phantom, Les Mis, Sweeney Todd, Jekyll & Hyde.... Throw in a male serial killer (I know Les Mis doesn’t have that but Javert can be taken as just a tad psychotic from how he hunted down Valjean nearly the entire story) and you got my attention.... Thank god im a lesbian because if not I’d probably be accidentally marrying a serial killer

    'the ball' being where anatole pressures natasha into the relationship
    'natasha and pierre' for relationship building

    You liked Great Comet! I'd definitely suggest Dave Malloy's other stuff (his archaic website is a goldmine of bizarre content). Preludes is a post-Great Comet show that I think is more mature in a lot of ways... Malloy built the orchestrations off the music of Sergei Rachmaninoff and it's just awesome. The libretto is out there floating around; I can't remember where I downloaded it or else I'd put a link here. I'm always grappling with the thought that I may like one show more than the other. He also wrote a 4-person show/concert called Ghost Quartet, which is a lot like Great Comet, except Ghost Quartet makes about zero sense. But, it's cool like anything else Malloy writes.

    I think Great Comet is phenomenal, especially the score. So we agree there. But I just want to say that Heathers is a *satire*, largely about the obtuseness and obliviousness of people despite the darkness around them, so the music should not reflect the death and sadness it deals with. I really like the score to Heathers, I find it tuneful, smart, emotional and fun. Not the great work that Great Comet is but I think an underrated score. The show itself didn't work entirely, but the movie is fantastic in my opinion.

    • @BrendanClifford
