    One thing I loved about Conquest that I have no hit in any other cardgame I've tried, is that it had a maximum game length. Your decision making could take a long time but after 7 round there are no more planets and its done. That helped me so much when I was learning and I knew I was making poor tactical decision. Because I knew the game couldn't just endlessly go on and on and on I would at least try new decisions and ideas, see what they did, get to the end and be ready to play again, learning from my mistake.
    A lot of other games I've tried don't have that and so I get stuck in long tedious games when I don't know enough to make consistently good decisions.

    Loved this episode! Not only discovering this great system (which was copied for the 2019 "Air, Land and Sea" board game?).. but the discussion about lost Game Systems, legality and reuse. Game Design is my hobby, and seeing the systems in LotR TCG be lost to time hurts my soul. If you guys are ever about designing a game, I'm in full-time and for free. No joke!!

    Can't believe I missed this stream when it happened and up until now. I love this game. Mechanically its amazing. Theme is right on, and as a player of thr mini game, yes, 40k is miaserable sometimes but not necessarily in a bad way just like a "ya, I'm screwed but lets chuck some dice" way. Such a great game!!
    This one will get rewatched!!
    Was only saddened to not see the Orks played; by far my favorite!!

    Hey TC, I think doing a stream where you go through hypothetically creating a card game (Reskinning this game was brought up a couple times in the stream) would be a lot of fun to do with Chat tossing ideas around. Of course it would be all over the place but fun to toss ideas around.

    Maybe this gets mentioned later on but there are a couple of cycles and big box expansions that were made by fans called Team Apoka. They added some new mechanics like faith with the Adepta Sororitas. There are also a couple new sets of planets. I found these cards added some fun, new options. There are some recorded games from tournaments they held here on CZcams. apoka.mozello.com/ Deck builder still up here with the new cards: www.traxissector.com

    Man I miss Conquest SO MUCH! It and A:NR the greatest card games ever developed imo. Also, I have to respectfully disagree as far as faction count is concerned. That is one of my favorite elements. Many factions allows for so much more diversity, nuance and possibilities in the design space and had the potential to keep the game so fresh. However, I do understand the argument concerning lack of content for those that really wish to focus on specific faction. I think Steven has it right here, big box expansions every 4 or 6 months would have been the way to go. With factions and possibilities in builds and greater diversity in the meta, this wouldn't have been an unrealistic wait period for new content. Ahh, what could have been.

    Just digging through my old collection, I think an easy way to fix some consistency is go from 50 card decks to 30. Gives you almost the same ratio of signature cards to filler as Marvel Champions.

  • @MrSuckeragi
    @MrSuckeragi Před 4 lety +7

    Is this from him? XD - Seriously, I love the design for this game. It really feels like an all out battle, even getting card draw and resources is like literally battling it out right from the start. I'm a big fan of multiple ways to win, conquering planets really fits with the theme. Having a personal warlord is also very immersive. So sad that I was not able to get into the game before it got cancelled. Went back and forth on ordering the game after it got canned. On the good side tho, The game is now basically a complete set since no more new cards will be printed. I wanted to try the new factions, the "insectoid" ones in particular, but I feel like they didn't get enough packs that they would have, a lot of the cards might not work so well since the game never got into its real stride, a lot of the cards that could have completed certain playstyles may never be known. Another side note is that there is still a community I believe working on "custom cards" - dedicated fans, well I'm not so sure if its still on going, but I believe there were a few fan-made "expansion" to complete the sets never printed... oh well, such an amazing game - so much potential...

    My god Steven. Your comment at 2:38. Amen. I feel the exact same way about combo players and the combo strategy. Nothing is less fun than watching my opponent stall out for some asinine OTK crap. Especially if it's a game or combo you dont see coming. There are so many times its like, "Alright that was cute, now I know how it works and there is an easy hard counter if I knew that's how it worked in the first place."
    Nothing like watching that Rube Goldberg machine in action...90 mins later of course!

    If you like starting with your Warlord in play you could check out the old Babylon 5 CCG, where not only did you start with your faction leader in play but you got to pick your whole starting hand.
    B5 was a fun game but it was looong and you had to play it multiplayer, preferably four or five handed, and it had some wonkiness to it that made it a bit unfun if you didn't go for playing to the theme. But if you did play to the theme? Awesome, so much fun.
    They also had chase cards signed by the actors, which meant that the Psi Corps expansion sold out partly because Star Trek fans wanted to get the card signed by Walter Koenig aka TOS Chekov (or so I heard at the time).

    I would have loved to see "first player to pass on the deploy phase gains 1 resource". A lot of time was spent delaying deployment in order to respond to your opponent, which was an advantage for some playstyles and warlords. A little balance to that would have been great.

    • @Brekekekiwi
      @Brekekekiwi Před 4 lety +1

      Mam, I always though I needed the theme, but watching you guys play is making me miss it so hard...
      I'd look into an L5R: Conquest or Star Wars: Conquest, but a Dune: Conquest fighting over strongholds and areas of Arrakis? I'd be so in!
      I thought having a unique in hand in Conquest was never as useful as in GoT or L5R. Maybe if you could discard a matching unique in the Deploy phase to fully heal a damaged copy of it in play or something?

    YES! This was my favourite 2 player game and I just started looking into solo play for this game on TTS this last week. Glad you played through and it jogged my memory on how the gameplay worked. The system was fantastic and I thought myself about how, perhaps, heroes of might and magic could be brought to the table as a card game using this system. Love the banter at the start and the discussion about what happened to the game. So sad! I thought it was their best LCG system (but also agree certain cards needed fixing). Wishing something co-op could use this in the future. Please not Game of Thrones or Star Wars though, there are enough of these hehe!

    I think with more curated decks, designed to sort of sit in the middle of the curve, making it like a boardgame, you guys would have had a lot more fun in the games. That's what I've done with my old cards.
    Also, you've convinced me. It wasn't the theme that kept me hooked on this game, though I loved that. I'd play pretty much any reskin of this!

    Regarding game mechanics copyright, I believe the mechanics of the card game Bang! were copied exactly, down to the effects of individual cards, and rethemed from Wild West shootouts to Samurai battles.
    The same thing has happened a lot with roleplaying games, I think, though some of that is everyone using the WotC OGL to create new (or recreate old) versions of D&D.

    I think more distinction should be made in gaming between complexity and complication. Complexity is interesting and overall, a good thing. Complication, not so much. Conquest has nice complexity, but is not complicated or convoluted.

    Zach mentioned Star Trek Attack Wing as though it was similar to X-Wing, so I went and checked it out because I'd never heard of it. Wow. It's JUST X-Wing with the other IP and worse production values. It's like if somebody other than Decipher had made the Wars CCG WHILE the Star Wars CCG was still going. That's crazy.

    I'm curious what Brad Andres is doing at his new company -Mondo- Being a fan of the 40k universe, I think he did a great job creating card content with that rich universe... I'm wondering, because like you guys I would like to see this game reborn, and Mondo appears to be making content for Marvel/Disney... They look like they don't do many games yet, so my guess is he went there for the IPs.

    It's a shame you had that combo deck. If you knew what the pieces were, it becomes a non interactive way to assassinate the warlords with absolutely no defence. Awful for the other player and not a great thing to watch either.
    Your drone that dropped health allows you to deploy your small cheap units by the Eldar unit, they instantly die, then you can ping the warlord . It was terrible.
