I would not title her story as “tragic”. Tragic are the people who enslaved her and believed they were her superior. Her life showed the complete opposite. She is the best of humanity and her enslavers the worst of humanity.
She precedes Madam CJ Walker as the first black female millionaire in the U.S., yet myself and most in this chat have never heard of her. Thank you for spotlighting Grandma Mason
When my 40 yo daughter took history I forbid her to write essays based on history school books. I went and bought four book written by 4 different Arthur’s. American Indian, African American and people who have settled from different countries. I even bought a book about how Spanish missionary buildings were built here in California. Thank you for sharing Biddy Mason’s story. I want a movie lol god bless her
A grand movie is deserved and expected. I think that Tyler Perry, and all of our other wonderful, talented, creative directors should come together and collaborate on this massive ethic.
What struck me was that Biddy was 48 prior to buying her first property/personal residence with the majority of her wealth accumulated in [relatively] short succession afterwards. She faced challenges I'll never be able to imagine...it gives me great hope that I will be able to experience Biddy's ultimate material fortune so that I too, like Biddy, can create a family legacy and better give to others.
This experience needs to be told in public schools. We tell the same stories about the same people. There are so many heroes who survived and thrived during and after slavery.
I totally agree. Biddy is not only an amazing African American who rose up from enslavement to rise to the top, but she’s a woman who succeeded in a man’s world and blessed the lives of her people and society for good. We celebrate MLK in January for his work in Civil Rights. Why can’t we honor Biddy on or around her birthday (sometimes a difficult undertaking with formerly enslaved people who were lucky if they were even named and not just given a number on the census forms for their enslavers before the Civil War), or come up with a day to nationally honor her and other great, good Black women in US History like Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth and Phyllis Wheatly (a Black, formerly enslaved poet-the first American woman of ANY color- at the time of the American Revolution. These women definitely deserve to be remedied and emulated.
" There are so many heros" Exactly. So how about parents, etc, fill in the gaps instead of relying solely on schools to teach their children everything.

Wow!!! What a wonderful person was Biddy Mason. These are the stories that southern governors as Desantis (Florida), Abbot (Texas) have outlawed to cover up the inhumane treatment of Black people. These are the stories of inspiration that should be promoted to inspire young Black people.
Unfortunately I have never heard of her. Thank you for this amazing American story. A shame that children in the south will never hear about this exceptional woman.
I'm a bit confused. Why do you think children will not hear of her? And why do you feel like it's just the children of the south?? It doesn't fit the narrative being pushed about black people. Just like you never hear of the prosperous black towns that were bombed burned-out or turned into lakes. With the HELP OF THE WICKED ASS GOVERNMENT.
Such an amazing story! She had to have brought so much to the black community & I am sure they were grateful. What I don't understand with the wealth she had, why did her family bury her in an unmarked grave?. That makes no sense to me at all.

Love her. Sometimes I think the cards I’ve been dealt makes reaching certain goal’s I have impossible. But to be born a slave end die a rich philanthropic woman..there are no words. She’s incredible.
Slavery has been with us since the beginning of civilizations. Unknown in Hunter gatherer societies it still goes back thousands of years to the beginning of civilizations. Today 40 million plus people are enslaved. Africans, Kanakas and others transported over the oceans only began with the age of exploration. The name slave comes from the word Slavic. Slaves of Europe. This woman was an astute business woman. I don't celebrate her as a wealthy woman but as a philanthropist. She should be remembered and celebrated for her compassion and care for those less fortunate
Thank you Forgotten Lives for having a video about someone I haven't hear of before. It's great of you for highlighting a woman that otherwise will be fairly unknown.
I believe they came from Edge field SC. Mr Smith who owned her was a mean Alcoholic man. He was also cruel to his wife Rebecca Dorn. Rebecca had a slave, some say half sister named Hannah. Hannah also got her freedom too. Smith became a Mormon and moved to Utah uprooting his family and once arriving in Utah there were lots of children. He had more than likely fathered children with Biddy and Hannah and Rebecca. Then he had a falling out with the Mormon's, more than likely over the treatment of Biddy and Hannah. So he went to California and when he found out they were free he lied to keep them . He knew all along they were free. So he left California and went to Texas and he was very cruel to his wife her whole life. I'm glad Biddy and Hannah got to live the rest of their lives free.

Very informative I am a Black American and had never heard of her. I wish a movie would be made if her life. You have a wonderful speaking voice, nice sound and clear and easy to understand.
How about a title that focuses on Ms. Biddy Mason's inspiring perseverance and ability to turn her early misfortunes into a fruitful, generous life? She was truly a model for future generations. Thanks for this video
What an impeccable story about a Great Leader of her time. To me she was truly a leader to help buy properties to help out her community in Los Angeles. Such as SHAME to not have acknowledged this Gray Black Woman in our Black History Books.
I would not title her story as “tragic”. Tragic are the people who enslaved her and believed they were her superior. Her life showed the complete opposite. She is the best of humanity and her enslavers the worst of humanity.

I believe the heading should be changed from the Tragic Tale of California's richest Black Woman. Biddy Mason. Biddy Mason Triumph! Maybe from Tragic to Triumph tale of California's richest Black Woman Biddy Mason.
However, might not get as many views. People love to hear what happened tragically. Good work you do here! Just found this station yesterday and I've been glued. I'm definitely sharing!
Thanks for taking the time to tell this story.
I love your stories.
Very informative I am a Black American and had never heard of her. I wish a movie would be made if her life.
You have a wonderful speaking voice, nice sound and clear and easy to understand.
She is a National Hero
Incredible life
Her story will spread now
How about a title that focuses on Ms. Biddy Mason's inspiring perseverance and ability to turn her early misfortunes into a fruitful, generous life? She was truly a model for future generations.
Thanks for this video
Thank you for this information
I look forward to sharing this with my family
I really enjoyed this episode thank you, even though I had never heard of this wonderful lady before. I would love to hear more stories from Africa
I would love to see a movie about her life like that did for Harriet Tubman
What a wonderful lady!! Very interesting!! Loved this story!
Another amazing story about an extraordinary life!
What an impeccable story about a Great Leader of her time. To me she was truly a leader to help buy properties to help out her community in Los Angeles. Such as SHAME to not have acknowledged this Gray Black Woman in our Black History Books.
Great story. I learned something today.
I really enjoyed this wonderful story about an Amazing Women. Thanks for bringing it to us!
