A lot of depression is caused by unrealized dreams and hopes or lack of living your life purpose. Sometimes it spiritual and sometimes it’s biological

@@Patty_Brard Sometimes people suffer from not having realized what they consider their expected life goals, but there is also the situation that someone feels lost because of lack of purpose. That is not dependant on life style, wealth or status. Its just that you feel you arent doing what you were supposed to do with your life.

    • @Patty_Brard
      @Patty_Brard Před 4 lety +6

@@MrPainfulTruth "Its just that you feel that you arent doing what you are supposed to do with your life" is a belief. There is no such thing as something which you are supposed to do, it is just in your head. And thanks to those thoughts you get that feeling which you were talking about as a result.
Dont get me wrong I've felt what you are describing many times but Im just trying to point out here that when you go to the root of a problem it always comes down to a certain belief-system.

But here's a something to think about: are you depressed because you are chemically imbalanced or do you become chemically imbalanced because of stress and persistent negative thought patterns? Which came first, the chicken or the egg? It's similar to job stress which can alter your chemistry and cause high blood pressure.

Religion is not in the equation here.
Leave it out of it, Abraham Twerski does not mention it either.
You claim two definitions are mutually inclusive, but they are not.
A depression can encompass many things, it is why there are many subdivisions of depression.
One day it can feel like complete dread and paranoia, the other day it is feeling nothing at all and everything in between.
It is hopelessness, it is believing in your dread that you see the true world, it is hurt, it is perpetual numbness, it is the feeling of not being able to do things because they take too much effort to do anyway thinking "what's the point".
When you've educated yourself, in depth, on the disorder instead of read what two definitions mean and pulling religion into the equation, come back.

Depression is a way of your subconscious or as I like to say instinct telling you that you have unfinished business with your past actions and/or current thoughts beliefs and actions. Short, you are not in tune with your feelings and thoughts. Subconsciousness has many ways of trying to "turn you on" or motivate you to change things. All living seeks balance except human consciousness in the past and in now. But we can change, we can learn to concentrate, learn to communicate and live in peace with our subconsciousness via our thoughts and actions. Feeling is in us all, how we perceive it up to us.

It could be work out, meditation, a small vacation. Could be anything. It's subjective. Multiple motivational speaker videos available online can help to some extent. After step one one will automatically know what to do next whether professional help is required or another small step further can help.

I became numb to the word depression growing up because it was almost as though the word lost it's meaning at some point with how much it was and still is being tossed around by people who either just want attention or actually become addicted to this idea that they are apart of a group of mentally ill people.
I'd hear people talking openly about their depression and couldn't help, but think they were just attention seeking. Worse part is I felt, and still feel, like i was right about most of those people.
As I got older I became desensitized to my emotions. I refused to believe I had depression because surely real depression is more painful than what I was going through. After awhile I stopped feeling much at all aside from the occasional melancholy.
That melancholic feeling never goes away, but things do get better. It's got it's peaks and valleys. Always sucks to be in the valley, but if you dont put in the effort to climb uphill you'll never get out of it.

Thankfully I dont struggle with money, i have a home, i have friends, parents, education, all those aspects take part in happiness, that make you 'not depressed'. I was diagonsed with depression at 16 (without anyone close knowing) and had suicide thoughts at the time (I'm 22 now). Allways tried to find an explanation to this but not even one occured to me. Today I can say im more stabilised and stoped looking for an justification, but my nature, is to be sad. I finally understood that we dont have to know everything and seek for a solution , we are not perfect. What i know is this: I will not die as a happy man.

Chag chanukah sameach, Rabbi. I am so blessed by your wisdom. Thank you for this video. A good friend and I have been talking and have decided the best way to put depression into the category to which it belongs is to decide is the depression "situational" vs. "chemical/nutrient" or bio as you say. It is one thing to experience a situational depression in which one is "bummed out" for a period of time over a certain situation vs daily struggling with the inability of the brain to have too much vs too little uptake in the particular chemical or nutrient in their brain that causes long lasting clinical depression in which the only help will be anti-depressant medications. So think along those lines... situational v. biological.

I know a psycho analyst who will start to work on a depression via analysis. If nothing shows up from inside the patient he turns to medication. So he makes sure he doesn't fight only symptoms.

Depression is so overused these days. A lot of people have a lack of sense in their life or experience something bad and have depressive periods in their lifes, but do not have clinical depression. The problem is that those people fall in love with their depressive state of mind and like themselves as the depressed person who hates the world and life. But they don't see that they ruin their own life with looking on their "depression" as a friend. They want to be like this, even though they say, they don't and they hate it. I know this too, because I fell into this for a few years and saw no way of getting out. But if you don't have a clinical depression, which can be diagnosed, there are ways out and everyone has to find their own way out. But it is absolutely not good to like this state, this comfortable depression.. the comfort is a lie. Get out of it, if a possibility opens up.

In a sense he’s right; depression can be caused by trauma or it can be chronic. Treating depression is very difficult due to how complex and diverse we are as humans. It’s not just a matter of popping pills or letting some tears out… it’s much more than that. It sucks…
