I did the dirty deed. I contacted Remington and Federal asking for more 16ga options. I may go ahead and contact Winchester and Fiocchi as well.

Do more 12 gauge mini shells please

My loader for 16 is a MEC 600 JR it really does a fine job.

I have some of those Winchester upland loads. Maybe 2 boxes. 1980s vintage I would guess. I gotta start scrounging 16 ga tools and components now.

I'm gonna contact Federal and Remington about 16ga ammo in general. One or both of those giants could run some batches of 16ga in slug, buck, turkey, in addition to what they currently make. A major distributor like BP/Cabela's or Midway could move a million rounds of those special loads in only a matter of months. There are so many 16s out there just begging to be used again. People tell me about the 16ga guns they have that never get used because they usually can't find ammo or if they do, anything except small bird shot Even finding a box of #6 isn't a real regular thing.

Federal actually are making buckshot and slugs for 16 gauge at the moment, but they both as well as Winchester need to step up and start making better ammo for 16 and 10 gauge. Factory 10 gauge ammo is just slightly better than 12 gauge 3.5” when it could be a lot better.

@@theshotgunscientists Yes, I knew Federal still offered a buckshot and slug load, but they are as scarce as chicken lips on retail shelves. You just about have to order them. I would have to double check with Remington to see what is current. I did buy some Remington 16ga slugs about 3 years ago, As for 10 ga, I think the 3 1/2 inch 12 really ruined things for the old 10 ga. That one was doing pretty decent in the turkey and heavy goose arena back in the early 90s. I was working the counter in a pawn and gun shop for a while back then in some pretty serious goose territory.. People were buying 3 1/2" 12 ga Benelli Super Black Eagles like popcorn then. 10ga guns had gone ice cold on the market. Its too bad really, 10 ga is capable of far more overall field performance than the overgrown 12 ga ever will with that excessive length shot column. For turkey and goose, 10ga should be half the market with plenty of ammo options. I still think that a 10 ga should be the Alaskan bear defense default gun in a pump or automatic. For a handful of people up there, its been a favorite. A 10 ga slug or buckshot load really says it all when you need it stopped cold quick.

You're not kiddin' Blue Dot is hard to find. It was hard to find 5 to 8 years ago. When I found it I bought 3 lbs. I love it in my .357. I'm a fan of recoil. I heard that said here before. I haven't tried it in shotshell yet.

  • @rodsvintagesxschannel.3095

Thats the exact load i use in my spanish dbl 16. With #4 shot #5 shot. I use the older winchester 16g wads.also have remington power pistons im using it in the Remington high brass game load hulls...works ex, but i dont use buffer.
Also loaded some with IMR Blue.

Whoa Precision Reloading was selling 1x fired 16ga CF hulls? I am depressed now I didn’t know about this. I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled now. I’ve got a small stash of them but would like to add more.

    Tyler
The reason that I was drawn to your channel was because of your extremely detailed knowledge of Shotshell
Reloading is so large and I can tell that you don't have any problem with telling about any one of the different gage
Sizes at all ! I saw the very Sad video that Wade posted after his wife passed , you could see the pain and loss that he was in ! Great Man ! Take Care and Be Safe

  • @mattkissmyasstyrants8676

Great load, and would definitely be a good rabbit roller. I usually only use #4 shot when hunting small game. I swear by it.
and Yeah man, Sad news about Ms Jo Ann...

have you tried Gaep Bn2 crimper?

    • @theshotgunscientists

Nope, I’ve not really seen the need personally. My semi auto guns feed everything I load with no issues. The taper crimp for the Lee load all works great.

If you don’t have access to reloading what load would you recommend for shooting turkeys?

For lead shot off the shelf stuff longbeard xr in 3” or 3.5” 12 gauge. They pattern better than anything else offered from any of the big companies. The longbeards are good across the bored really. If you’re talking 16 gauge, federal praise storm and Remington ELR are both good. Fiocchi golden pheasant is too. Apex offers a 1 5/8 ounce tss load for 16 gauge at great speed. If you really really want to give a turkey a bad day, salt creek ammo offers a 3 ounce 10 gauge load.
