    I've been playing piano, classically trained, for almost 50 years. I believe I have earned the right to have an opinion as to the "greatness" of a pianist. Lang Lang is an incredibly gifted and passionate pianist whose interpretation of Rach 2 is refreshing. People who criticize either do not truly know or understand music from the perspective of the pianist or they are just cruel and jealous of the talent others possess.
    Many people may think people are merely born with a gift. Yes it's true there MUST be a certain amount of raw, natural talent involved - this is obvious - but what people don't see are the thousands and thousands of hours one practices to achieve greatness. It's a discipline most are never willing or capable of achieving. So a word to "critics"....once you are honestly able to say you spent your childhood, teen years, and many adult years hovering over a keyboard of other musical instrument, playing until your hands hurt, wanting to stop yet can't stop because the passion that compels you to play exceeds any physical pain or social price you pay for missing out on many things..hen you can have a platform and a right to criticize a true musician.
    Until then, you need to be very careful. When one lays their hands on a musical instrument to play in front of others- they are actually laying their soul bare to show the world. It's a vulnerability few can ever understand and certainly something small minded people can not respect.

    • @frankG335
      @frankG335 Před 3 lety +26

      So well said! People may not realize how vulnerable artists are. Their work is EVERYTHING and it does come from the soul. And they read these types of comments! They aren't distant statues. They are human beings and yes they are also able to read what you say. So unless you've poured tens of thousands of hours into your instrument, don't register your ignorance before such greatness.

  • @richardbutler9466

    I can think of nothing better than listening to my two favorite grand pianists, Lang Lang and the young Russian pianists-Alexander Malofeev-playing Beethoven and Rachmaninoff one who ushered in the Romantic Movement and the other closed the Romantic Movement in classical music. Everyone who loves this music knows Beethoven and Rachmaninoff as well as Lang Lang. But not everyone may know about Alexander Malofeev. I have listened to almost everything he has had posted on CZcams and his talent, charm and music capability as well as his ability to show what and how he feels about the music he is playing through his eyes and face is nothing short of miraculous and so much like Lang Lang.
    His perfection of what he plays is nothing short of genius. There are so many young talented pianists trying to make their mark in the music world today but only one or two have the ability to break through the glass ceiling that holds them to mediocrity. But just as Lang Lang broke through the glass so has Mr. Malofeev. He will one day be, in my opinion and in the opinions of so many others who are familiar with his talent and artistry, be recognized as one of the very few greatest pianists who has given the world a loving gift with his talent.
    As to this performance by Lang Lang like all his performances it is one of his very best. So what if his debatable body motions are somewhat distractions, does one attend a performance to stare at the artist or to listen to his artistry, talent and the music the pianist plays with his or her fingers? If the former then you are wasting your money attending a performance like this one. Just go, close your eyes and listen. Then you won’t be bothered. Lang Lang is a true genius. No, he is not the replacement for Vladimir Horowitz for no one is and may never be and he has never claimed he was. But he is equal to every other pianists living today if not better than all but one or two others. And he is only equal in talent to them.
    Thank you, Lang Lang. I have seen you perform live thrice and you have given me all I could ever ask for in a performance by a great performer.

    • @richardvolpe7664
      @richardvolpe7664 Před 3 měsíci +2

      I would say that attending a performance has to do with both, yes both, aspects: the listening AND the visual. How could it be otherwise? If one is bothered and distracted by unusual facial and bodily gestures made by the player, then the viewer should stare down at the floor for the whole performance?
      And regarding the "expressiveness" of Malofeev's "eyes and face", it's pretty well non-existant. His face retains a shall we say, a neutral quality, and his perfunctory way of bowing shows not the slightest "connection" with the audience. He may as well be bowing before a brick wall.
      However, I've enjoyed some (but by no means all) of his performances, and perhaps five years from now , he will have shed his general tendency of choosing tempos that simply don't correspond to the composers' intentions. In that regard, there's an attractive pianist (first name Khatia) out there whose concept of the "giusto" (i.e. "right") tempo is is as far from the mark as Hawaii is from California.

      Fu, Beethoven was that age when he /wrote/ the piece. Age is no excuse for lack of talent! ;-) Nah seriously, I do respect Lang Lang. This was before the Barenboim masterclasses on structure and keeping the pulse that he himself created. This is the most difficult music to play for Lang lang, because it demands a huge concentration and an orderly mind, overview, structure, to keep such different fragmented music together in 1 whole grand piece. Beethoven was not very much ad libitum, although the long pauses seem to suggest it. Lang lang is a romanticist who enjoys dwelling in the moment. It's a beautiful recording to watch. Because that, in itself, is the lesson that Beethoven the Magnificent is teaching us, in my view, with this concerto: all will come together, the sweet and the bitter, it is all one.

    I am just expressing my mind to those hurtful, negative criticisms thrown at Lang Lang. Those critics knows they couldn't compete with Lang Lang's competency and brilliant skills especially on connecting with other musician to convey the beautiful notes and expressively display his emotions! Also I observed the most of his Beethoven 's concerto he is paired with equally masterful Christof Eschenbach! Both of them brilliantly bring the Beethoven's concerto to the audience's enjoyment and satisfaction!👍🎹🎶🎵👏👏🎈🎈🎈❤️🇨🇦 So to those who don't like to listen Lang Lang pack up and leave.

    I haven’t seen negative comments but I have listened to him play and being a piano player myself, he is IMHO probably the very best currently active pianist. He has the POWER, ACCURACY, and musicianship above and beyond his contemporaries! Most of them WISH they could play half as well as he.

    so late to this thread, but just came across this video. it seems to me a bit absurd to be arguing about which artist's performance is better; LL or anyone else's. To me, all that matters is whether any performance touches you in a fundamental way, and for me, Lang Lang's performance is transporting. I really don't care about whose trills are better etc.; it's all about whether the performance reaches your soul. And for me, this performance by Lang Lang is incomparable; his second movement is ethereal, and close to what I suspect Beethoven felt as he wrote it (no, I don't have any evidence to support this....). But the passion, and the pathos in this performance is remarkable. So let's just enjoy an amazingly gifted pianist, without all of the "mine is better than yours" b.s.......

      Göktuğ Kaya Listen, please, to his illuminating performance of Schumann's ABEGG Variations, his Chopin E-Minor Concerto, and his recital of two Mozart sonatas and Chopin;s Four Ballades at the Proms. If you are not a committed fan by then, you probably never will be. I am a well-trained pianist (Eastman, Juilliard, Mannes) now 74 years old, who played very well, indeed, but never in my wildest dreams could I ever have hoped to accomplish anything that could be compared to the superlative achievements of Lang Lang.

      Creamiee Usako True. He brings a really different breath to every piece. I am not very fond of his articulation on Chopin pieces. However it is definitely not the case with Beethoven. His rubatos are out of this world. Maybe because Beethoven is more universal and Chopin needs that "western touch" more ?

    • @goktugblack

      ***** Yes. One example of that masculine touch is the powerfully accentuated left hand chords at 15:19. I have never heard those chords being played so strongly.

    Lang Lang has matured quite a lot in his playing, adding to it a depth that only years of playing can bring. It was nice to see him on a video of a master class he took with Barenboim--whom I think, for my taste, is a master equal to the best, when it comes to Beethoven's piano works, going back to his recording of the concertos with Klemperer a half century ago.
