    The Soviet T-62 was a capable machine when it first was introduced in the 1950s. How does it stack up today, against the most modern Western main battle tanks such as the M1 Abrams and Leopard 2? The answer: not great. I wanted to post this later but with the Gaijin boycott going on later this week, my hand was kinda forced.

      Well, tank vs tank encounters are in fact somewhat rare, just like in most wars. It's not giant tank divisions smashing into eachother, it's mostly positional combat involving mainly infantry and artillery and drones, with tanks in support. The HE and machinegun on a tank is always the most important, followed by it's ability to protect against AT weapons, followed by it's ability to penetrate enemy tanks.
      I've heard channels that talk to veterans from the Ukrainian side who also stated that tank vs tank encounters, so I don't think it's just Russian cope.

    • @CrazyDutchguys
      @CrazyDutchguys Před rokem +46

      @@whocares427 The problem is that a lot of these older vehicles dont have any thermals, while most Ukranian AT crew do. The fact that tanks can get outranged by infantry is...pathetic to say the least. Then again, having a shit tank is better than no tank, as its still a big ass gun to bring to the battle. T-55s and such will be used as artillery because from what i've heard Russia is running low on 155/152/122mm artillery shells but has plenty of 100mm shells, which these things can fire. Still, can you imagine the US going "ah fuck, guess we'll send in the M60's"?

      @SiphonRayzar Před rokem +31

      @@schaddenkorp6977 The T-62's and T-55's being sent into battle don't have thermal optics for the most part. And if they do, they have un-cooled thermal optics, which have effective range of about 600 meters.
      In comparison, the AT crews of Ukraine are using cooled thermal optics, which have an effective range of 10 miles, give or take, and allow the AT crews using weapons like the Javelin and NLAW to strike at tanks far outside of their thermal optics range (if they have any), or basically with impunity if said tanks they're engaging don't have thermal optics. Barring getting lucky and the crews (or supporting infantry if they have any) happen to see the attack directly, it's difficult for Russia's tank forces to react and deal with Ukrainian anti tank crews because of this disparity.
      Thermal optics are super amazing to have in an environment where the background temperature of the landscape is much colder in general, which makes people and vehicles stick out (being hot in comparison). The landscape of Ukraine is perfect for thermal optic use, in compairson to places like Afghanistan, where the average background temperature is much higher.
      Does that explanation suffice?

They have enough of other tanks capable of going up against newer western tanks. They are churning out new T90s way faster than the west can, if im allowed to guess.
    A thougth aswell on the use of old rounds. From what ive heard there hasnt been a lot of tank on tank combat and the tanks have mostly been firing heat or he, and the older ammo is still pretty capable against the tanks they have faced so far. Might aswell use it.

    These tanks are being used by Russia for 2 reasons. 1 - The abundance of HE ammo from Soviet reserves. 2 - These tanks will be used as field and mobile artillery pieces for supporting assault operations against cities and trench lines. These tanks are not intended to fight any modern tanks whatsoever. Don't look at it as desperation; look at it as recycling. Instead of letting them rot in warehouses, they will use the guns to support infantry.

  • @interpl6089
    @interpl6089 Před rokem +6

    Let me correct you on this 0:37 statement
    I know Americans usually don't know much about European conflicts, but Russia is not using T-54s/T-55s. They do Use modernized T-62s because it's a far better tradeoff when it's lost to stuff like artillery (artillery accounts for most tank kills in Ukraine, on both sides), Ukraine won't be using anything better than ''donated'' T-55s and T-72s, so a modernized T-62 can still keep up with them while modern T-90Ms and T-80BVMs are saved for future offensives. As of now, Leopards never actually met T-62s because they are not in significant frontline use anymore, as they served their purpose in 2022 and early 2023, Leopards got absolutely wrecked by artillery and Ka-52s/Mi-28s, never even seeing a Russian tank. On the T-54/T-55 issue, they are used either as a training platform for drivers or are used as rear echelon tanks, guarding objects like ammunition depos and oil storage facilities.
    Hope this clears things, it's not meant as an attack on you, but this should clear air on the ''muhh Russian army bad, defeated by 50 nations''
