  • tire inserts are all over the news these days promising a low pressure puncture free existence. this is particularly attractive to the rigid rider in my opinion --- so maybe they are for me? are they difficult to install? how do they ride? well here is a long video documenting the process innnn reality

LOVE the vid. Tech tip, if not shared already... The Stans bottles and the larger refill bottles are made to dock with each other. Flip open large bottle, remove red tip from small bottle and insert into larger bottle until it clicks. Then flip entire unit upside down and alternate squeezing small bottle and big bottle until smaller one is sufficiently full. Flip back over and remove. You'll save SOOOOOO much sealant this way. Ride on brother!

I've ran Cushcore on my Poseidon Redwood. There was a drop I did with a blind sharp rock. My rear wheel slammed right into it. My rim definitely got dented. But, I didn't catch a flat. And I still continued riding like normal. I only discovered the dent when I got home tho😂😂. As for mounting them on. I never had any issues with that. As long as you push that bead into the center of the rim, it's basically like mounting a tire without the insert. I just wish I put my cushcores on my Karate monkey before spring fling😭😭 that one rock caught me off guard. Greatful someone had a tire plug tho.

I've been using tubeless since well before Stan's ever existed. It was a DIY only thing back then. Invented by DHers sick of flats. I adapted my setups to long distance endurance riding. We even 'brewed' homemade sealant or used 4wd products. It's far cheaper!
I still rock ghetto (split tube) tubeless. Its the original tubeless hack. It's still the most reliable by far..... It also feels much like a supple sew up, since the construction is quite similar. Wicked traction, feel and cornering! I wish I could afford a set of handmade XC sew ups. I used Paris Roubaix style fat tubulars waaay back in The day when I raced road and 'cross
I used such road tubs off-road on singletrack and very rarely got flats as well. My pro quality tubs NEVER flatted until they were worn thin. Hand made expensive tubulars WILL make you a tire snob for life, but you need to push the limits of traction to realize this. Most folks are afraid to crash.....But supple tubeless tires come pretty darn close.
I remember the awful pinner 19mm clinchers! Tried them one ride back in the day. Simply unsafe!
The beauty of split tube is that the rubber tire seals naturally to the split rubber tube, now a rimstrip. Latex in the sealant is natural rubber that glues everything together. The only failures I've EVER experienced were tires torn on sharp rocks, (this happens to any tire) or self induced, PERSONAL failures, like forgetting to air up preride like an impatient child, then rolling off the freakin tire. Not pretty! OR forgetting to add fresh sealant. None of these failures are design issues. I carry a plug kit but never needed it. I love extremely rocky rooty technical trails and riding to extremely remote areas for a few days at a time. Climbing these sort of rough trails trials style is a whole bunch of fun!
In retirement I wrench in a shop for fun and laughs. I've tried nearly every tubeless system that exists and many different tire/rim combos. Tubeless repairs, installs and maintenance are a daily chore at our shop at the bottom of a 3000 ft mountain. How a particular tire fits a particular rim is the key to realizing success. Manufacturing tolerances in the bike industry are quite a joke! I'm a retired high reliability machinist and mechanical inspector. Nobody's fooling me! I prove this fact every freakin day at the bike shop. True manufacturing standards, QC or engineering 'standards'
are a really bad joke! It's really easy to prove on nearly any new production bike. It's also why I refuse to buy them at industry discounts. No bike business can afford the meticulously documented 'quality assurance' standards we used in the high reliability industries. Things that human lives and or vast amounts of money depend on. Ironically, human lives also rely on relatively cheap bicycles. Rant finished....
The BEST way to test your tubeless set up is to inflate your tire first without any sealant in the tire. Get a compressor! To ensure reliability, it should hold air on its own for at least 20 minutes. If not, add tape and or improve the seal. I've done setups where tires held pressure sans sealant for 10 days and counting. The only reason for sealant was to stop punctures.
You're on the right track there! Be patient and persistent!
LEARN from your mistakes. It's a new process to learn. It can be frustrating at times, but the results are worthwhile if you're a hardcore rider who maintains their junk! The set and forget types who only fix things when it's broken will despise tubeless, guaranteed. I've seen this issue hundreds of times.
Once you find a good rim/tire combo stick with it and stock up.
I haven't had a pinch or puncture flat in 20 years. No joke!
Pinner high pressure road tubeless (big fat tubeless road tires are great) is something this professional will NEVER EVER recommend, but its certainly job security and profit for us!
When a customer insists and thinks they know more than I do from marketing BS, I gladly and simply take their freakin money. Just like taking candy from babies, literally. There's a sucker born every minute 😂

      Haha, practice makes perfect!
For my customers I must install tires in correct orientation. It's simply professional. The rare occasion I put one on backwards is a real buzzkill.
But personally I dont find the direction that important. That's not what slows me down! I often turn my tires around after they're about 1/2 worn. It will get you longer tire life and sometimes even works better in muddy terrain. I keep using tires until they slip out bad on hard torquey climbs. Cycling was supposedly a 'green sport'.....
Tires have become ultra pricey. It's insane! We sell certain Maxxis that cost $110. They're sticky, awfully heavy, but take serious abuse. They don't have anywhere near the feel of sweet tires like the UltraD's or Rene Herse.

the glove like grip of a light casing tire is an addictive flavor-- fun thing about these inserts is that you get to run the tires super low so they go even more glove like on the terrain without risking the pinch flat and rim dent. the flexible part of the tire still gets to do its thing, but as the "suspension" progresses, it bottoms on the foam instead of the bare rim then hence pinches a tubeless set up. its been fun to follow in road racing too --- I like playing around with this kinda stuff --- would I say its a must have? probably not --- but it did make it possible for me to ride the tires I wanted in Sedona without obliterating my wheels.

BUT you MUST be very careful with that sort of leverage. It can and will damage rims. I wouldn't recommend this AT ALL on plastic (carbon) rims. Ironically, they often have some of the tightest fits of all. Enve has to be one of the worst rims in this respect.

hi Greg ::: there are several tires including our ultradynamico robust casing that have sturdier sidewalls that would cause fewer pinch flats with your tubeless set up. the kevlar puncture belts added to some tires only line the tops of the tires to help prevent punctures on top --- something you don't really need to worry about much with tubeless as there is more rubber on the tops of tires and they seal with little issues mostly with fresh sealant. the Cush core would be the recommended way to go if you find you want to run lower pressures (about 5-7 psi) and not risk bottoming out on your rim.
